Say goodbye to Jason Elam.
With their starting quarterback and running back both out, I’d venture to say the Falcons’ problems extend far beyond the misguided right foot of Jason Elam. But at least they’ve addressed the one problem easy to fix.
Elam, who nearly cost the Falcons Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay and cost them possibly two others by missing kicks at Carolina and New York, is out. Presumably, the Falcons weren’t quite sure who to blame more, the kicker or the long snapper (Bryan Pittman). So they released both. They new tag team is Matt Bryant and Joe Zelenka.
If you’re an NFL general manager, this is the easy part. You can’t look up in December and decide, “Our pass rush isn’t very good. Let me go find a defensive end.”
Say hello to Matt Bryant (here with Tampa in 2006).
Kickers are everywhere. Some never age (example: Morten Andersen). There’s only 32 jobs in the NFL, so they’re always available, sometimes working out on a local high school field.
Will this make a difference in the Falcons’ season? Possibly.
Their playoff future still depends mostly on how quickly and effectively Ryan (turf toe) and Turner (ankle sprain) can come back from injuries. But considering how many games are decided by a field goal or two, the Falcons had to do something. They can’t look at any remaining opponent as a gimme, not even the final three (New York Jets, Buffalo, Tampa Bay).
The only question is whether general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith waited too long to make a change. But given Elam’s track record — and the fact he was 29 for 31 last season — you understood them thinking, “He’ll snap out of it.”
Of course, he never did. Next stop: a high school field.
There’s one problem fixed.

They knew DJ was the best qb on the roster and Blank just had a meeting with Dimitroff & Smith…………
Blank said “I WANT TO END THIS CRAP – Bring back Shockley”!
I told you it was a big CONSPIRACY for the FAKE injury to the CHOKE.
This was all in the planning before the Tampa game.
- 1st they had to find a subtle way to bench the CHOKE
- Next they didn’t want the Vick & Eagles show them up
- They rule CHOKE out on Monday when they never have before
- They cut Elam, so they can bring DJ in under the radar
Blank wants this TRAIN WRECK to end and he is really pissed that he didn’t keep Vick or Shockley on the roster. He tried to listen to the blog fans who never buy tickets, buy building up a 5 year senior who tossed 22 PICKS.
Blanks is tired of being the laughing stock and losing all that money at the gates.
Good try Art but any fool knows the CHOKE is FAKING being injured, and the only injury he has sustained is over working that NOODLE for an arm.
Blank has finally done what I have been telling “YOU” people since last year’s draft……………

Jeff. Sometimes you’re funny. Sometimes you’re really good. And sometimes your just a negative jerk. The last two Falcon posts have been examples of the latter. This team has had a rash of injuries. And they were brutalized by the NFL schedulers (all the games following a bye week were ridiculous). Add to that, Ryan finally did have that sophomore slump that he was just coming out of when he got hurt.
Still this team currently has a winning record and they played the Saints closer than anybody else has all season long. They are in the wild card race going into this week. I hope they win it, ugly or not, because I am a life long fan. But I also hope they win so you can get your butt back on here Sunday night and eat a nice slice of humble pie. Quit hating on these guys. They dont feel anything like the Mora team that collapsed. They have been in all but one game. You yourself said, but for two missed kicks, they could easily be an 8 win team. How bout something positive between now and Sunday. Sheesh

About the 09 draft…
1) Sidbury has been a good ST player and 3rd down rusher – remember he was considered extremely raw when drafted
2) P. Jerry showed signs of being a dominant DT early in the season and his absence has hurt the D-line more than you might think. He and Babs in the middle next year will make Bierman, Sid, Davis and 55 extremely successful.
3) Owens is the best corner on our roster, only green
4) Moore’s injuries have bust potential written all over them, but if he is able to sustain the level of play he displayed in college, he will make our secondary extremely more respectable.
5) Middleton and the OL are clearly projects, as most people selected in the 5-7th rounds are.
Give TD a chance. The most interesting draft for him will be his third. There his drafting ability will be the most tested yet.

I don’t have any idea why neither of those two corners were signed by the Falcons. The asking price couldn’t have been THAT high, or the Saints wouldn’t have paid it. I’m sure Dimitroff has his reasons though. He still has the benefit of the doubt unless next year’s draft/FA period (other than Gonzalez) is as bad as this one. Somehow, though, I don’t think it will be. I’d be surprised if we don’t go to the playoffs next year.

It’s apparent that “Choke” is off his meds again, assuming he’s ever been properly evaluated to begin with. He’s probably one the non-contributers waiting around for free health care to ease his pain.
I don’t know what his fascination is with Matt Ryan. I’ve yet to see him offer a solution that doesn’t sound like the rantings of someone who’s come off a 30-year bender. I just see “dump the chump.” Pretty astute commentary actually. So the Falcons should cut a 1st round draft pick in the 2nd year? Who should they bring in? Should they draft an unproven QB next year? Bring in Tebow or Mccoy? Is that your answer? Let Redman start forever? Try to pick up the long list of veterans, oh wait, there are none that are worth a crap.
As far as “faking” an injury, I suppose you are using a braille typewriter and can not actually see what happens on a football field, you just listen to the game over the internet or radio, right? Did you see the way both legs looked as he went down? His left leg, which wasn’t even injured for some unknown reason, was completely perpendicular to the rest of his body. Oh, sorry “Choke”, that means his leg and body were at a right angle. Just visualize the letter “L”. His foot that got injuried was bent in a shape that it was not meant too. I read that you thought Flacco was some sort of Rocky Balboa for coming back from his ankle sprain. His ankle moved about 20 degrees at most. If you think “Choke” is not tough, go get Jack Lambart’s perspective on turf toe injuries. He was a 70s LB for the Steelers in case you’re too young or ignorant to remember. Well, obviously you’re too ignorant, but I can be certain how old you are. You have the diction of a 12-year old.
So, is your damage only that Atlanta cut Michael Vick? Is that really it? Were they supposed to go without a QB while he was in jail letting his skills shrink to nothing? They were supposed to limp along until he was given permission to come back, which at the time nobody could tell when that was. Have you actually watched him play for Philly this year? Not too impressive.
I loved Vick as a Falcon. I’ll agree that he brought a lot of national attention to the franchise. Yes, they sold out for those seasons. So, he was a natural leader, really? Was he classy too? Like the time he flipped off the Atlanta fan base on his way to the locker room? That was keeping it classy, San Diego. Respect throughout the league? Besides the flipping off of fans, do you remember Ron Mexico, or the water bottle, or the fact that most writers thought he’d never be an effective passer? The Falcons won with Vick, but his time has passed. “Choke”, are you one of those guys that thinks Obama is the greatest president of all time too?
Vick as a starter for full seasons went 9-6-1, 11-5, 8-8, 7-9. That’s not exactly punching a ticket to Camden. “Choke”, get a life, do some research before you post again, and get over Vick. Time to move on.

It’s not unreasonable to think Elam would kick his way out of the slump. He has the track record. It didn’t work out. Yeah, you can say that he “lost” a game or two with an errant boot. But that ignores the bigger question: Why are these games so close?
If defense does its job, scores aren’t so close all the time that missed boots matter. Tossing Elam’s an easy fix, sure. But if you let McNabb pass all day, you could have a quadraplegic kicker and it wouldn’t matter. The CB/DBs ain’t pretty from the get-go, but they’re downright ugly if the DL doesn’t contain.
Redman will do fine (wake up, Michael Jenkins). The running game will be functional, but not pretty. The Vick Show will be a media issue, but it won’t matter on the field. Smitty and Co. have to work some magic with the D this week; otherwise, McNabb goes Bird hunting and bags a few.

Well said Jeff, but even if by some miracle the Falcons go to the playoffs, they have too many holes in the lineup to go very far. Essentially, this will be remembered as a tragic campaign filled with bad breaks and disappointments. With any luck at all they could of had two more wins; It simply was not meant to be. Additionally, they got very little return on their draft picks from this year and they have no answer for the deficiencies in the secondary. Add the mutiple injuries to the mix and things do not look good.
In a side note , I think Redman was better in relief than Ryan has been for much of the season…but he will never be more than a good backup. He took some serious shots in that game… several more weeks of that and we will be finding out how good John Parker Wilson really is! Ryan showed in the fourth quarter of the Giants game exactly the kind of Quarterback that he is. It is fortunate, however, to have Redman ready to fill in when needed. One other thing for the lunatic fringe … Ryan is the man. The moron who pollutes this blog with his constant whining about Ryan can just “Choke” on that for a while. Denial is such an ugly thing.

I specifically lay the NOLA, Panthers II, and Giants losses at Elam’s misguided feet. Whomever posted the Vent about FGs should not be an adventure is funny and absolutely correct. You want a technician, not an artist. Sorry Mr. Blank. I realize his 3.3 million in guaranteed money makes it harder to field the team, but I’m glad we didn’t wait any longer for him to kick himself out of the funk. (I’d've done the heave-ho earlier even for that pedigreed kicker, but we all know I don’t know jack about being a GM — my beloved is still cheering for DORSEY if Ryan makes a good play.)
Don’t go ragging on Redman; think Seattle in 2007 and SD in this year’s pre-season. Our back-up QB is better than some starters. Did you see how on the final drive, he just stepped up and started drilling the ball with precision and patience. Again, I think what the coaches saw was he’s more of a technician than Ryan’s fluid imaginative artistry … but guess what, I like that in a Number 2. He’s keepin’ this day job to avoid selling insurance, and that is a heap-big incentive program. (Wish I had a talent like my cousin Mike ;^)
Whatcha gonna say if we win against the Eagles? Remember the Eagles’ fan base that boo’d Santa Claus and gave a standing ovation to a convicted felon this preseason (back off, Choke, I still play and replay the scene where MV7 runs through the two MN defenders among other feats.) But Eagles are going to be in the Predator Dome so I think we have a shot … particularly if Abe can make a courtesy call on Mr. McNabb.
