Richt needs to end speculation about Martinez

If Willie Martinez has coached his final game in Athens, we should know soon.

If Willie Martinez has coached his final game in Athens, we should know soon.

I’m not sure what to read into Mark Richt’s sudden decision to cancel his scheduled Sunday night conference call with media members because of a reported “family function,” other than, well, a reported family function.

But with strong and protracted speculation that there are going to be significant changes on his coaching staff at Georgia — including either firing or demoting defensive coordinator Willie Martinez — Richt should not let this matter linger much longer. Either announce the staff will remain intact or make changes. The public guessing game helps nobody.

This generally is the week firings happen. (Virginia already has fired Al Groh.) It’s an important time in recruiting, and teams also want to get an early jump on potential replacements. There’s no reason to wait until after bowl games. Bowls generally are inconsequential, as it relates to a coach’s job security.

All that said, it would stunning if Martinez is back, certainly as coordinator. Martinez’s supporters shouldn’t get too drunk over the 30-24 season-ending win over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs played better defense at times against Tech than they had this season. But the Jackets were held to only a field goal in the first half largely because Georgia’s running game kept Tech’s offense off the field. They had only four possessions. (The others: missed field goal, interception, time expired.) If any coach redeemed himself Saturday night, it probably was offensive line coach Stacy Searles, not Martinez.

In the second half, Tech scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions and fumbled to end another drive near midfield.

As our Tim Tucker points out, Richt has done little to defuse speculation that he’ll make changes. Sometimes saying nothing on the subject — as he has done most of the season — is a greater indictment than anything else. Bottom line: Martinez’s body of work, and certainly the Dogs’ defensive problems the last two seasons, speaks loudly. Change is needed.

But regardless of Richt’s decision, he needs to clear the air quickly.

Am I now off of the Tech bandwagon? Can I please dash all of these Jacket fans with a little bit of reality regarding their football program? Do I finally realize that Tech’s football program will never be as good as UGA’s even in their best season in two decades and Richt’s probably worst season ever? Can somebody for the AJC please acknowledge how weak the ACC is? Ok, I will…

Offense will have some talent with Murray, Ealey, King, AJ Green, Orsen Charles. Georgia needs playmakers and a new coach in the secondary. Who wouldn’t want to come play defense for a team with so many offensive weapons?

Typical Richt attitude. We won – I think the coaches deserve a raise at the end of the year. All for beating a team with more leaks on defense than a screen door on a submarine. Next year – another verse same a the first. Beat the weaker teams lose to the stronger ones. Get used to 8-4 and 9-3 years with mid-level bowl games UGA. But he is such a nice guy.

I understand your thoughts on it being important for recruiting – but not even seasoned coaches like John Chavis left until the season was over. There simply isn’t a history for it happening this early in the process.

Hey Jeff, where is the article where you- along with every other AJC hack- admits how badly you missed on predicting the game Saturday night? Tech owns GA, CPJ never loses to UGA, etc. etc. 30-24!
Richt has a plan to address the issues with the team and he’ll do it on HIS timetable, not yours. This is an important decision so give him time to make it. Just ask Obama, he’s been making a decision on sending troops in Afganistan for what, 6 months. If taking time is ok for BHO, it’s good for me. CMR will make the move and you’ll jump all over yourself making a controversial response no matter who he chooses. PLEASE write another 10 articles telling the Tech world that losing to UGA doesn’t matter. Ask any “real” Tech fan and they’ll tell you different. Do you prefer tartar sauce or vinegar for the fish fry?

Although this sounds trite, many of Georgia’s defensive problems can and should be blamed on the lack of consistent offensive production which kept Georgia’s defense on the field too long. As the best games this season proved, the Dogs need to utilize the talent they have and pound the ball with their very talented corps of running backs.

He has to have something lined up for coaching the defense in the bowl game. He has to communicate to recruits and make no mistake, defensive players pay attention to who they are going to be playing for.

This must be handled correctly or it could lead to:

1.) Embarrassing bowl loss if defense is not focused or prepared properly(enter your snide remark now)

2.) Losing recruits

You got at least two teams in this state in need of defensive talent, Tech more so than Georgia. Tech is going to recruit as hard as it can while this is brewing in Athens. Also if you keep Martinez there is a good argument that a player at Tech will be better utilized since Georgia is filled up with five star recruits on defense that disappear one they are signed. Martinez is like the parent that loved his children too much. They ran the streets undisciplined losing games to lesser opponents and coming out against Tech only because of the humility teaching them what a good coach could have save them learning the hard way. Now Martinez will start with a new set of players who have learn nothing from this and chances are he has learn nothing either.

Jeff, what do you know about sports anyway? It is noon on Monday and you expect action from Richt promptly on your schedule. How about, you explain how you and the other “experts” continue year after year to fall in love with these teams, who play no one of any quality and beat them by big margins. You then have no explanation for your enthusiam for the overrated teams once they meat a quality team and get their comeuppance. The ACC continues to pile up numbers against their own patsies and you experts get impressed. The first game of the season, FSU will beat VT and oh, you guys just fall in love, FSU is back better than ever. Then as the season progresses, you learn that neither team is worth a bucket of spit, but it is so much fun to get excited during that first game. I remember the hype over the FSU/Miami game this year. Two big powerhouses in full battle to the death. What a joke. Never forgert Terrance Moore and Bill Curry several years ago declaring that the ACC had arrived and was better than the SEC. I have followed much of the UGA coaching drama from a distance here in Tallahassee this year, so I am not privy to all the talk radio and speculation up there. But, Coach Searles is not the problem. Yes, there are changes needed at DC. Kickoff Coverage and DE, sure. But folks, take a long, hard look at the UGA Strength program. When was the last time a kid came in at 6′4″ 260 and bulked up to 290/300? Has AJ Green gotten any more ripped or faster since his 2 years in the program? No. Coaching starts in off-season drills, get the kids physically and mentally tougher during the off-season so they don’t have to get in shape and grow up in the first 30 days of the fall. Discipline begins with getting up at 6am to go lift weights on those cold FEB mornings. And that is the one area that will affect every position on the field. Go get Dick Bumpas from TCU, Maybe Bill Johnson from the Saints and Chris Doyle from Iowa.

According to you and Mark Bradley, PJ is a superior strategist. I think this proves that PJ may just be a “flash-in-the pan” coach who has had some luck. It also doesn’t hurt to play in a weak conference where the best teams would be in the middle to lower part of the SEC. After the first quarter, it became obvious that Tech isn’t used to the physical and hard-nosed game that is played in the SEC every week.

Our recruits are fine. Read dawpost.com, uga.rivals.com etc NOT the AJC for those updates. If the recruit only wants to go to UGA because of Willie…oh well. NEVER let a recruit(s) dictate that kind of decision. Rumor has it that Tuberville is all lined up. Maybe Willie is willing to stick around as a DB coach?

Schultz is right about this. Gotta look at the season as a whole and not a couple of games in which things went well. There have been way to many undisciplined occurences on the D side the past few years that I’d be willing to bet didn’t happen up under the likes of, say, Erk Russell…If they did then I’ll admit I don’t know what my eyes and stats tell me.

I’d hate to be Mark Richt this week…..Willie Martinez is not only a friend, I think they are BEST friends….
I’ve heard rumors that Coach Martinez has/will resign, because he knows it’s the right thing to do for his BEST friend and that Mark is trying to figure what he ( willie) can do at UGA, based on other rumors we’re hearing, aka Garner leaving. He could become Recruiting Cord. ????? We do need help on D, and the man just can’t improve it. Mark has been around the college game long enough to know that just because you get a new Def. Cord, things will improve. Then here ya go. We lose a lot of beef on the front defensive line, and for the sake of me, who’s coming back. I think we’re pretty darn good on offense next year, and regardless of who is coaching the Defense, they will be in for a tough job.

Bobo’s O gave up 3 or 4 TO’s in 4 out 5 losses.

No DC could win with that kind of ball protection.

Willie’s D gave up 0 100 yard rushers ALL SEASON. Richt NORMALLY wins about 93% of those games.

Willie took on the #1 2007, 2008, and 2009 OC and beat them (Gus’s Aubrun, and Tech PJ).

Bobo got killed when he took on a good D like Tenn or Flo.

Bobo called a 54% pass play mix the 1st 7 games of this year, when teams like Florida are calling a 66% RUN play mix.

Bobo has only RECENTLY SWITCHED to a run strategy under EXTREME scrutiny.

The keys to the Jacket victory over the Dawgs this past Saturday was the determined effort at stopping the run. Georgia tried time and time again to run against a stalwart Jacket defense, but to no avail. Dave Wommack matched Bobo in a battle of wits and was the clear victor. The other keys to the game were the dynamic running of Jonathan Dwyer who repeatedly gashed Georgia up the middle in what almost certainly was a Heisman solidifying effort. Colt McCoy will be invited to the Downtown Athletic Club, but it will only be a formality as Dwyer is the presumptive winner after his 320 yard performance against the defeated Dawgs.

I see the Dawg Fans lined up on Bradley’s column and hardly a glimmer here about the UGA program. Is it that you care more about GT and the ACC than you do about the SEC and UF and UT and the other opponents that you have on your schedule? You beat a GT team that was ranked #7 and going to play in thier conference championship….GREAT WIN FOR UGA!!!! But what about your own conference? What about the Fire Mark Richt and Willie Martinez and Mike Bobo chants that were heard for most of the season? I know that most UGA fans are realistic and are generally civil but you have way tooooo many sidewalk fans who talk smack and cannot even tell you who half the players on UGA are!!!!! Please be intelligent folks and make a good argument. You beat GT and wanted to fire your Head Coach, Def. Coordinator, and Off. Coordinator the week before this game you just won.

Where was the defense that played GT been this year? Why did UGA wait till the last game to let the RB run and play? Where was the OL play? All these are valid questions for a UGA fan to be asking….Not calling for a firing of your Head Coach like you were doing. In Bradleys column he said that CPJ said the game was not that important….that is BS in the players and fans mind…..In his mind it is just another game and it is HUGE for recruiting and for the future of the program. But do UGA fans really care more about beating GT or Florida? So then answeryour own question….GT wanted to win that game and a loss hurt GT more than it helped UGA. If (and remember a few years back when UGA beat Florida) UGA would have beat UF then the GT game really means more. As for the smack talked by GT fans….take a reality check pill UGA fans you talk way more smack when you beat UF than GT fans ever talk.

That said…..To Be The Best You Have To Beat The Best!!!!!! UGA played the best game that they played the whole year…..5 penalties for 35 yds when thier avg was 10 for around 85 yds. They got only the 2nd fumble recovery of the yr against GT. They only turned it over 1 time. And the offense moved the ball and the OL played GREAT!!!! So did UGA deserve to win? YES!!! Did GT make too many mistakes? YES!!! So they lost. On to the ACCCG and then see what happens. For UGA some more 5 star recruits that perform like 3 star against UF 3 times every 20 yrs. So does it make you gloat taht you beat a team on the field that you out recruit, that plays in your words a weak conference, and that you have beaten 8 of 9 yrs. Go ahead.

But what you need to think about is what happened to the FIRE chants of the last couple of weeks and is all forgiven and forgotten. You beat GT and lost to the team that is constantly winning the SEC East and doesn’t every team play for championships? Gt is and Uf is and Texas is……..What is UGA playing for? The GA state title in recruiting and beating GT? Guys stop being obnoxious and start realizing that you win some and lose some but it is a game and name calling is childish and asking that someone lose thier job because you disagree is wrong. What if your coworkers, clients, customers asked that you be fired because they didnt like you or your work….How would you feel? This is just a reality check for MOST UGA Fans!!!!!

HEY JEFF:
Mark Richt needs to make (and will make) his decisions on HIS timetable, not any particular sportswriter’s or Georgia Fan’s timetable. It’s not exactly an easy process to demote (or worse yet) ask one of your best friends and college roommates to resign. He will make the correct decision, he doesn’t have any choice. But a slightly irrelevant newspaper and a bunch of fans aren’t running the Georgia football program. Any anyone who does think they are that important needs to check into rehab. This issue is between Damon Evans and Mark Richt. Period. The rest can taka a hike!

One day people will realize that Mark Richt does not run his program based on what bloggers, fans and sports writers who have never played a down of football think. He will make his announcement on his time and will do what he, and he alone, thinks is best for the Georgia program. Despite the disappoinment of the past two seasons, Mark Richt’s calm memeanor and level head have stood us in good stead for the past nine seasons. If football programs were run by public opinion Urban Meyer would be the only coach whose employment is secure…and his might be in question after Saturday.

Jeff. I’m just not sure if Willie is totally at fault here. For example, against tech, he had players perfectly positioned to make plays on two occasions that would have ended tech drives that led to a TD.
1. CB is in position to tackle Thomas on 76 yard gallup, but gets stuffed. That’s not Willie’s fault. The player has got to make the tackle or at least slow him down until help arrives.
2. DE is in perfect position to make tackle for loss on the reverse in 3rd quarter, but does not wrap up. Play goes for 26 yards instead of 5 yard loss. Drive ends in a TD.

These two plays alone led to 14 tech points, but should have ended in tech punts IF the players execute what Willie has schemed.

Why don’t you allow him to do the job we pay him to do? The man is a head coach at a major D1 program for a reason. He knows how to run a football program. Let him do his job. Maybe he wants to get a replacement lined up, maybe he’s trying to work out the logistics of how this will play out and what will happen to Martinez. Maybe he’s trying to have respect and allow Martinez to line up a job elsewhere. No matter what he’s doing, it’s none of our business until he decides to tell us. I’m a contributing Alumni and deserve as much as any fan. It’s a business decision and should be on a need to know basis. While all of us want to know, none of us needs to know. Hire Will Muschamp as the new DC. Offer Willie another job where he can’t do any damage, keeping CMR happy. Or let Willie choose another team.

Why Muschamp? He’s a fiery, intense competitor and a proven defensive success. He’s coached with some of the best around … Nick Saban, Mack Brown, and Auburn. He’s a Georgia man through-and-through, with deep roots from Rome GA and UGA from ‘91-’94. Forget the “head coach-in-waiting” thing at Texas … Brown will be there for many more years, plus FSU and Jimbo Fisher are proving that is a dangerous and unproven concept. The lawyers can handle the legal end of things. GA will pay him at least what he is making now.

Don’t think he’ll come? Ha! When Mama calls, he will come. UGA is Mama, the dear alma mater, the loving nourishing Mother, calling Will Home. Ray Charles sang it best:

Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through.
Just an old sweet song, keeps Georgia on my mind.
I said Georgia … Georgia, a song of you.
Comes as sweet and clear, as moonlight through the pines.

Other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly.
Still in peaceful dreams I see, the road leads back to you.

I said Georgia, ooh Georgia, no peace I find.
Just an old sweet song, keeps Georgia on my mind.

Just get Dooley, and Herschel, and CMR, and Damon, and a few old teammates (though not Bobo), and go see Will Muschamp. And tell him, “Mama’s calling you home, Will. And we’re not going home without you.”

I’ll let someone else handle replacing Bobo.

Lets not forget that Coach Garner who is a very valuable recruiter and coach for the dawgs may be in the mix and should be if Coach M. is removed. I have a feeling that if he is not named DC he will be going elsewhere…Would Coach M. accept another position on the coaching staff, maybe, but not sure how that would work if Coach Garner was made the DC..What DC out there now that we would want make a lateral move to take over the Dawg defense? Muschamp, Smart, Van Gorder..I hope everyone will not rush Coach Richt into this decision just for change sake…keep in mind whatever happens will affect recruiting very much so and we will probably lose some committments, however if the right choice is made then we also may gain some that were not previously in the picture…Very tough decisiion for Coach Richt as the DC is not the only coach on staff that will be affected by a major chamge…Next year may have to be viewed as an adjustment year and can the dawgnation accept that with alot of changes….

Dawg days… our offensive line did not step up at the beginning of the season. You can’t run the ball if they can’t block and create holes for them to run through. We went through five different O Line rotations until we found one that WORKED. Saturday was a prime example of the big boys on the line working and creating gaps. We’ve been missing that kind of effort most of the year. As for Cox, he can throw an alright deep ball but can’t throw a ten yard screen to save his life. And Stafford always over threw the deep balls. We need a Cox/Stafford blend.

That said, I think even he realizes sometimes you need new blood, some new perspectives and new ideas. So, I expect he will make some changes. But he is still the best football coach in GA and I trust he will do what is best for UGA football.

Jeff, I agree that timing is everything but Richt has proven to be very weak when making needed changes. I honestly don’t think Martinez will be gone. Here’s my rationale.

If Mark was to going to make a change, it would have already happened. He will allow slick Willie to remain in place and whatever weak opponent UGA plays (in whatever bowl they go to)will be Richt’s reason to keep him. He will refuse to look at Martinez’s complete body of work and excuse the HUGE deficiencies that slick Willie has displayed.

My suggestion: Keep slick Willie as the assistant to Mark’s wife and anoint him the prestigous title of Water Boy. He could serve up the finest H20 and still allow Richt to weasil his way out of firing him.

i respectfully disagree.

if we have to sell a DC to recruits we have bigger problems. the announcement of a new DC (or that there will be a new DC) is not the most pressing matter for Richt.

Georgia has had excellent recuiting and that has not translated to more wins so i find that the “it will affect recruiting” argument irrelevant…in my humble opinion.

agreed change is needed but that Richt needs to publicly announce that in the next 30 mins is debatable.

People are stupid and they are led by AJC sports writers.

Jeff, you need to go back to playing second base in little league and stop telling professionals who run football programs how to do their jobs. You’re a sports writer, how, I don’t know. If keeping a job were based on performance, as it should be, you’d be long gone before Martinez. What in the world gives you the authority to announce that someone, ANYONE at THE University of Georgia should do ANYTHING you say? Just go back to your love affair with Tech. They played nobody and beat nobody, that was obvious after Saturdays results.

WOW says: “Where was the defense that played GT been this year? Why did UGA wait till the last game to let the RB run and play? Where was the OL play? All these are valid questions for a UGA fan to be asking….

That’s a pretty easy answer. They were busy playing the SEC not Tech. Nothing was any better, the opponent just wasn’t as good.

DAWGSTER: Why in the world is it that coach Garner always gets a free pass when it comes to how the defense has played???? He recruited these bozo’s first of all. Then we can get no pressure on the QB from the linemen he coaches. So why in the world does nobody blame him as much as Martinez? Martinez calls the plays, but whatever the schemes or techniques used are derived from input of all the coaches, the D-Line coach being the one of the most influential. So why does no one ever mention that he has to go???

WILLIE MARTINEZ SHOWED UP says :LAST in the NCAA in # of running plays called after 7 games.

LAST in rushing in the SEC for most of the season.

LAST in time of possession for most of the season.

LAST in offensive giveaways per game.

But last year he had the number one offense in the SEC, which of course includes UF. What’s the difference? He actually had talented, experienced players. Just like Willie had the number 2 defense in the whole nation two years ago, when there were talented, experienced defensive players.

Fort Worth Dawg : Why would we want someone from TCU? I bet Tech could beat TCU. They play NOBODY. Them along with Boise State will get their butts handed to them in what ever bowl they play in. Cinci would, too if they were gonna play anyone besides the ACC chump.
Not sure what will transpire, but I really don’t believe any set of Defensive coaches could have done much better with the players, circumstances, and turnovers UGA had this year. Look at it this way. Without really bad officiating in the OSU and LSU games. Those are two wins. Without losing to LSU, we don’t lose to TN. And the meltdown against KY doesn’t happen again in 100 years. That’s 4 wins and 4 less losses. I realize if frogs had wings…..still those are real possibilities. The team wouldn’t have been any better, the coaches wouldn’t have been any better yet all you “fans” would be thinking the coaches could do no wrong. And yet everything would really be just the same.

HBTD is right in that Martinez has yet to miss a tackle or drop an interception. Bobo has yet to throw one or miss a block. This bad season is on the poor performance of our players, period. And it’s sad to see that the livelyhood of good families depends on the whims of 19-20 year olds who while maybe talented aren’t robots. We’ve had one bad year. A year that is as good as all but 3 in our conference. You people need to get a life and have some pride in something besides a kids game.

Another thing that your humble sportswriter saw this Saturday was the on-going dominance of the ACC. Once again, the SEC was exposed as being an over rated and inferior brand of football. In the head to head match ups, the ACC teams were clearly more physical and the true National Championship game will be played in Tampa as the two sub-conference titans (GT & Clemson) square off for the game of the century. It will be a packed house with a Super Bowl-style vibe. It will be ELECTRIC as the college football nation turns it’s eyes upon the match-up of two dominant programs of the 2009 campaign.

The BCS will be anti-climactic as we will all witness the National Championship this coming Saturday in Tampa.

First of all let me congratulate UGA, they played an inspired game Sat. They also they had plenty of “bulletin board” stuff to probably last all year. You people talking about all the AJC sports writers talking up Tech and talking down Ga. You ask those players that played Sat. for UGA and I’ll bet they will tell you that was part of it. Ask UGA’s Jones about the game and why he played so well at safety. Everytime he looked at a paper they were talking about Rodney Jones TD run being the turning point last year when he missed the tackle. Those AJC writers probably got UGA more fired up than the coaches. Barnhart even still had his headline up Sunday morning (”Georgia Tech rolls over Georgia”) from Friday’s column. He was picking the winners and losers for the weekend. And he is a UGA grad. You think that didn’t fire up the UGA players?

I am seriously not trying to stir the pot here, but I don’t know any SEC team that wouldn’t look at tech and think, “ok, we can run the ball”. So where was the OL play? Why didn’t we let the RBs run more in the season? The answer is very simple. We didn’t play defenses that were as bad as tech. Seriously, I’d say tech’s defense was probably the 3rd worst we saw all year, and again, i’m not tech bashing, i’m just stating my opinion.

So here’s a suggestion, from now on leave all reporting on UGA sports to someone other than the AJC. UGA still has a bowl game to go and if CMR wants to wait until after the entire season is over, that’s his call. You are a moron. What will be done will be in consideration of the coaching staff, their familes, and UGA administration. It should be done carefully and wisely. CMR doesn’t need to do a DAMN thing to please you or the AJC.

Mobile Dawg

November 30th, 2009

Second that HopefulDawg. If WM leaves, and I’m still not convinced that will happen, hopefully CMR will begin to institute a training program within the coaching ranks.

The process works like this, all successful CEO’s have protege’s working all over the country. At a successful program like UGA we should expect to lose top notch coaches. That says a ton about the Head Coach. If your assistants stay around for years then you’re not doing a very good job developing them. When your DC/OC leave to take a HC job, you should have someone on your staff ready to take that position. When you turn over your coaching positions every few years that changes the blood in the program. When you get to old to coach or lose the fire you step down, aka bobby bowden, or you get fired, tommy tuberville.

Has CMR lost his fire? He sure looked different on the sideline Saturday night than he has previously. Was that pressure to perform, frustration, anger, or just a show? Whatever it was, I liked it. Keep it up CMR, that along with a few good coaches will turn your/our program around.

Face it, Dawg Fans, we are fortunate CPJ suddenly became Al Davis at the end of the game. The one play he runs a ‘normal’ route, the guy would’ve gotten 10 yards and stopped the clock. GT could’ve easily won if they had stayed with their offense on the last drive. Mark Richt blew it by having the losing field goal mentality at the end, the mentality that called for a middle screen on 3rd and 4 instead of taking a reasonable shot at a first down. Winning coaches like Belichek, Miles, Meyer and Saban take calculated risks to win the game at the end, not get conservative by playing for a long field goal. What those coaches do is actually less risky than the mainstream approach of running the clock, punting, and relying on an ineffective pass prevent defense.

actually coach j ..yes aj put on 20 extra pounds since last year.his first year ..he hasnt been at uga 2 years yet..he will get bigger and stronger..all these kids do from year 1 to year 3 or 4.

the reason uga is going to be 8-5 this year is not coaching but the fact uga is having to deal with guys leaving early for the pros and they are having to play mostly freshmen and sophs early and when a team has to do that while playing in the sec it will get you 5 losses. look at how many freshmen start/ play for fla and ala on the defense side of the ball. then take a look at the next best teams in the sec and see how many underclassmen are playing on there offense and defense..only south carolina and tenn are playing about the same amount of underclassmen and uga went 1-1..i think tenn actaully plays a little less than uga on offense and maybe defense..but anyways look those stats up and get back with me then you will see the connection..ugha is going through growing paines and it would be alot worse if not for the talent these young guys have..so i say keep the whole coaching staff intact and let these guys get older stronger and faster and you wil lsee that willie forgets more football than tyou guys will ever know…that def coord for fla went through the same thing just two years ago when they lost to a poor mich team..

The first couple of drives in each half are all coaching. How well did they prepare and how well did they make adjustments. UGA has gotten down quick on several occasions at the start of games and at the start of the 2nd half. Down 14-0 to Fla before I even got done popping popcorn and UT came out in the second half pretty damn quick too!!

Joe Cox played like a RS Fresh not a red shirt senior this year. Not to mention he didn’t get any better as the season went on. The same problem plagued the dogs all season, turnovers and penalties and good coaching should fix the both of them.

Bobo is way over his head and Martinez is clueless. Talent is there. Remember how promising some of these players are now and see how they look 2-3 years from now. Stafford was a projected #1 pick out of high school so it wasn’t like Bobo coached him up.

Tebow has gotten worse each year in yards and td’s, completion %, etc, 2007 was a good year for Tebow, 2008 was ok, 2009 has been bad QB stat wise.

Meyer is NOT improving Tebow, Tebow is getting worse each year.

Stafford improved each year at Georgia in yards, td’s, completion %, and Rating.

Georgia did a better job at improving Stafford than Florida did at improving Tebow.

Stafford went #1 pick in the NFL. Tebow is projected to be undrafted in the NFL by Mel Kiper.

Tebow could have been a GREAT LB or TE and had a great NFL career. The talent was wasted by meyer’s desire to win a champ, at cost to Tebow’s future career.

Folks, let me tell you something: Willie Martinez is an OUTSTANDING coach. Fans need to exercise a little patience. Firing a coach just because he gave up more points than any other defensive coordinator in UGA history is a bad, bad move. I’m gonna tell you something: this isn’t the way you build a dominant program. You can’t just go out and fire coaches who don’t perform. These guys have families and it’s really tough on them when their dad gets fired. They’d much rather go to school at the local elementary school and be heckled for having a failure of a dad than to watch their dad get a chance to move on to a school/career for which they’re more qualified.

BUT, if Coach Richt DOES decide to let Willie Martinez go, there’s one guy out there I think the UGA fans would be excited to hear about ; Kevin Ramsey.

For what it’s worth as much as I liked the game plan offensively for this one we still have to execute. A number of games the O-line didn’t execute very well. A lot of good things came together for this one, I attribute it to an increase in CMR’s intensity.

The idiotic fans who want to sack Martinez are totally disgusting. Look at the tech game. The Tech defense was excellant and shut down one of the best offenses in the country and the probable ACC and Orange Bowl Champions. People who know nothing at all about coaching are trying to fire martinez. Did you know that several of these characters have outstanding Income Tax and property tax liens against them here in Georgia and also in Florida. I do not trust people wjo do not file their Income tax returns. People who do not file their Income Tax returns should be run out of the state instead of trying to run Mr. martinez out. Just go to the courthouse records if you do not believe me. These idiotic fans need to be shut down and forced to file their Income Tax Returns. They should keep Coach Martinez. It is the players not the coach missing tackles. JS, PJ will not be at tech long if he keeps trying to sell to their fans that beating Georgia does not matter. It does mater, just ask every coach fired before him. Tech is still over rated even after the drop to 12th. Their ranking should not exceed 20 under any circumstances. A one dimensional team can not compete with the big boys. They had one player that caught a pass and it was only his 3rd catch of the year. Wow! That’s nuts! Georgia owns tech and I anxiously await the forthcoming articles about how wrong all the AJC sports writers were.

Maybe this is yet another reason why Florida can’t get a good Pro Style QB to come their way. The stats on espn.com for Tebow 2007, 2008, 2009, are embarassingly bad for Meyer’s coaching abilities.

Tebow has gotten worse, every year, in TD’s, yards, etc. He was ok when he got there, but after Flrodia finished with him, he’s worse, and the NFL doesn’t want Tebow according to Mel Kiper and Jimmy Johnson.

Jeff, I know that Martinez has to go but I trust CMR to make the right call pertaining to the time table as to when. I got to say that
saturday’s game is validity to my assertions and complaints I have
stated previously about CMR’s coaching philosophy. I read a lot of
of criticism about Bobo and his poor play calling and trust me I share
some frustration about his decisions, but they reality is that he was
trained for his position by CMR and carries on CMR’s philosophies.
I read occasional posts wanting CMR to take over playcalling duties.
Do you folk not remember the calls for CMR to surrender those duties
to someone else? Georgia always has been at its best when it puts
the proper amount of emphasis on the running game. Look at championship SEC play in the past . Florida and Alabama have done
a good job stressing a good rush game albeit they go about it in a
completely different manner. With the exception of the Spurrier
days the way to winning SEC championships has been and will continue
to be ground based. Gotta run well and gotta stop the run.
If we think that just getting a new DC fixes everything we are likely
in for more disappointment. Tubberville once claimed that CMR would
eventually learn that they way to go in the SEC is to run the football.
Personally I have not seen much evidence that he has learned that lesson
up to this point. CMR is all about “balance” and that is why even when
the running game is dominant he will try to throw the ball . I am not
calling for CMR to be fired because his overall coaching is a fine fit
for UGA. But I am convinced that we Dawg fans may as well get used
to the idea that in years like this one in which we don’t have
superior quarterback play we can expect more than our fair share of
needless losses. Good news is this coach can recruit top notch
quarterbacks with the best of them.

Their being best friends, to me, will only make this easier. If Willie has his best friend’s interests at heart, he’ll know that a demotion (if offered) is best for the organization and its head coach (aka his “best friend”).

I think Richt’s not making a decision at the moment has more to do with recruits who like Martinez who want reassurances that he’s still going to be there. That’s fine; get ‘em here, sign ‘em, then let the decision-making happen. He’s been instrumental in RECRUITING great talent; it’s at the X’s and O’s that he’s failed the program, not evolving as the S.E.C.’s offenses have.

Either Richt wins against FL and TN or he is gone…Stop the nonsense with having quiet time with the players, etc…How about running wind sprints up and down Sanford Stadium steps when you draw a penalty or make a stupid play…There is no good excuse for the number of penalties caused by our team – it indicates a complete lack of discipline and attention to detail…The butt grabbing after good plays, etc should be replaced with get your butt back in the huddle and get ready for another head busting play up the middle..Boys we need to get tough and play smash mouth football..Richt needs to lose the hair gel, designer slacks and polo shirts and start jerking some knots in some butts up there in Athens…This team is uncoached and undisciplined…He has squandered talent and opportunities at 2 national championships if he had the testicles to fire martinez several years ago….We need another Brian VanGorder or a reincarnated Erk (God Rest His Soul)….I can still picture the blood on the forehead of Erk from head butting players with his bare head….These players and coaches need to start understanding that it is a priveledge to play football at UGA and start acting like it…Get some testicles and start playing well disciplined tough football instead of playing some panty wearing Miami or FSU leftover trickery…I am fed up with the whole coaching staff…Heck – fire them all and start over!

Richt – biggest putz in the land. Orders his troops in 2007 to celebrate their first score against the worst Florida D in 50 years like a pack of wayward puppies. Jeff,
GT has allowed over 200 yds rushing 3 times this year. All 3 times to SEC teams who ended up middle to bottom of the SE Conference. Wanna talk a little more about UGA’s defense problems? How bout GTs defense? Anytime they play an SEC team their defense looks weak. LSU embarassed GT last year in the chicken bowl and LSU was not in the top of the SEC. Now UGA beats GT and piles up the most rushing yards of any game since RIcht has been at UGA. GT needs to either get a decent DC or forget about ever being significant. Offense at GT is really good but defense is equally as bad. Looking forward to your future articles regarding the ineptness of the GT defense.

As much as BimBobo would like to think he is a pro style play caller, his crap doesn’t work in the SEC. It took him a season and a half to run power football AT Georgia of all places? Georgia was a 5-5 team coming into the game, ranked high at the beginning of the year and failing miserably throughout the season. Tech, even with the loss remains #10 in BCS, 10-2 season so far and will be playing for a conference championship and a major bowl. Georgia, even with the win can not claim anything like this. Fact is, our defensive scheme is almost cowardly…little pressure on opponents’ QB’s, rare blitz packages…just playing reaction, on our heels. That dog don’t hunt in the SEC—where defenses DICTATE the game to opponents. Throw in horrid tackling skills, no on field leadership, and silly personal foul penalties; and Willie-Fence is a joke. Seems like Martinez must get nightmares about long passes, and puts a near “prevent” plan on the field. We need a DC in Athens that determines how the cabbage gets chewed, that is willing to play traditional aggressive UGA defense. Is there a coach with Erk attitude ready to fill the role? Let’s hope so!

79% winning percentage – dang should be at least 150% with what we’re paying him.

2 sec titles – dang it he should have 21 now like the Bear

7 out of 8 victories versus GT – Should be 10 out of 8

Needs to get mad more. i DON’T care if he has to manage every aspect of the game. a dang good coach would go kick over the water cooler a couple of times.

so what if he has several 10 win seasons. IF i were coach, i could win at least 15-20 games a year by meself

In regards to the Georgia – Georgia Tech game, I think the better team lost, but I give Georgia credit for playing one hell of a game.
If I were a Georgia Fan I’d be asking for my money back for those five games the Bulldogs lost by not playing up to their potential. They could have won all five if they’d played with the intensity they played with on Saturday Night. I think they cheated their fans in those five lost games.

Mark this down…UGA will be 10-2 or better next year and here’s why.

1) Washaun Ealey is a beast.

2) We will never again in our life see a UGA football team with -19 in turnovers with only 2 fumble recoveries

3) AJ Green is the best wr in america. I think UGA has the best wr corps with AJ, Wooten, Charles, Brown and King

4) OL will be much improved

5) Justin Houston is becoming a force at DE

6) AM will be able to ease into the starting role because of our RB’s..He will not be forced to try to win the game like JC had to.

7) Schedule much easier….LSU drops off-replaced by Miss. State. Ok State off- Colorado (losing record) on…We start off with LA-Monroe which will give us a tune-up to SEC play.

8) FL will be much weaker- You cannot lose Tebow, Spikes, Hernandez, Dunlap, Pouncey twins, and most of their defense without feeling it. i’m sure John Brantley is talented but he’s no TT.

9)Bacarri Rambo will be back- i think he’s a better player now than our starting safeties

10) Branden Smith will be better than our starting cornerbacks now.

11) UGA’s offseason conditioning will be brutal this year…Coaches won’t let them forget that 7-5 not good enough

12) Coach Richt is one of the greatest coaches coming back from adversity.

13) New DC coordinator

I know you’ll find this hard to believe but, last season there were an enormous amount of injuries, and slick Willie probably did his best job ever w/ a patchwork “D”…now, you have offense that not only demoralized the fans, but I’m sure the defense (entire team) were not too happy with the QB’s play concerning turnovers and pick 6’s…the offense were nothing more than moral killers…the best thing that happened to the O&D was Bobo moving to the sidelines and keeping the 5th year senior emotion’s in check…this year was history with CMR’s decision to stay w/ Cox all season…there is no way that “Cox gives us the best chance to win,” and if one of these other QB’s can’t hack it, then why didn’t the DAWGS go after another QB…college ball is a crazy game and especially in the SEC where records can be thrown out the window and most games are their own little rivals…anyone know what the recruiting looks like for the defense next year; any DE, LB, moving players from offense to defense…I’d like to hear something from CMR on where they are going forward…it already is known how badly the offense played the part of momentum killers this past year…this whole season should be on CMR’s head and not on the coordinators

Dr. Demento I agree on the offensive part. There’s no reason Aaron Murray shouldn’t have started the 2nd game of the season. He got up to school early and even our performed Cox in the Spring game! Luckily we will have Murray for 3 seasons because he will be another top QB takin in the Draft. Bobo’s play-calling is just horrible. I wouldn’t say fire Bobo but atleast take his play-calling away. That’s CMR speciality. This is College Football not pro football. Look at Spurrier he calls his plays and is one of the greatest coaches ever. The Defense is bad yes they were put into bad spots this year but they aren’t good at all. There’s too much talent on that side of the ball not to be a lock down defense. We need to go back to them hunker down dawgs that just love to hit somebody!!!! Go Dawgs and Congrats on the TEch win!!!

That game didn’t matter Tech players didn’t care really? You need to stop talking period. GA/GT is a huge rivalry it always matters.. Nice column, Jeff. I agree with your point about the running game keeping the GT offense off the field- if Tech offense had more time on the field, it would have been a totally different ballgame (that and their droppped pass at the end). You are also right- end the speculation now. But doubtful it will happen as soon as we all wish it would, one way or another. Martinez is just the beginning of this team’s problems. Next year could very well be more of the same.

canton, if it hadnt been for our fumble spotting tech the 3, tech isnt with a TD there.. Or if our guy doesnt pull the FG attempt. If if hadnt been for a lot of things, the score would be different. And of cource every event after that would have changed, so the drop would have never happened.

and that was a first down on the 40 , not a TD he dropped. Would have been scary though. I think Bryan Evans would have come off the bench and intercepted the desperation pass to the end zone personally.

See my 12:42 pm post. Muschamp would come if you ask him. Exactly what does “head coach in waiting” mean anyway? And why couldn’t he become “HCIW” at UGA? He’s 38 so a few more years of seasoning will help him anyway. If I’m Will Muschamp and I get to choose between being the HCIW at Texas with some uncertain future and a lot of big bucks, or the Def Coor and potential HCIW at my alma mater UGA with some uncertain future and a lot of big bucks, then I choose UGA … remember, when Mama calls you home, you can’t refuse.

Not sure about Chris Hatcher as Off Coord … still might be too pass-happy. Remember he was a QB like Bobo, who almost lost it with that idiotic 3rd-and-4 pass call against Tech when we were averaging 7 yds a carry on the ground all night long, not to speak of stopping the clock with the incomplete.

I really enjoyed your columns this year Jeff! This year’s blogs by the Georgia fans were a lot of fun to read also! I myself have found my comments about the Dawgs becoming more negative and has it bothered me. So I decided to stop, take inventory and see why I was feeling this way. To me “SEC football” is the definition of football. No trickery, just hard nosed, tough, grind it out football for 45 minutes. This is what I have loved about Georgia Football, until the last few years. Seems every team needs a standout nowadays. We’ve always had 1 or 2 each year ourselves. I kept waiting for that standout to step up, might have happened against Tech I don’t know, next year will tell. I have no problem with the Georgia coaches. Good men, each and everyone of them. I have a problem with the players attitudes this year. I watched every game and DVR’d all the games and replayed them all. It is amazing to watch how many players would just quit, seem to have the attitude of “let someone else do it”. I saw this on Offense and Defense. Now my question would be, how do you a player perform? Incentives?…isn’t a scholarship enough? I don’t know exactly who is responsible for the attitudes of the players besides the Head Coach. I never played college ball, but played 4 years of high school. I remember very well that if you didn’t perform, you didn’t play..never mind who won. The ones who tried are the ones we won or lost with. So fire all the coaches? Fire Wille? Fire Bobo? How about finding 12 players who will try on offense and 12 who will try on defense? If that means firing some coaches too, then do it. Time for the players to step up too! There a lot of good football players out there that would love to have the chance some of our halfhearted players have had.

I do not know if CWM needs to be fired or not. I will leave that decision to the man I trust with the program (sorry but it is not the AJC staff or the bloggers on here). I would like to bring a little prospective:

CWM was the DB coach when CMR took over the program.

CWM is running the exact same Defensive schemes that CBV ran and if you just go back and watch the tapes he does blitz and play man to man.

CWM is a great recruiter and his primary recruiting grounds are S. Florida. He has a lot of ties with coaches in that area and I feel it is important to recruit that area.

Martinez deserves the heat…but do does Janicek (spelling) and the special teams coach. Our OL coach is really good I believe especially when it comes to playing power football — run the FB first to set up the pass. He was good at Auburn and great at LSU — they always had great running games. I think we would be lucky to keep Stacy — he probably gets tired of trying to make OL tough playing for a coach who wants finesse.

Why does Georgia keep losing to Florida?

November 30th, 2009
7:07 pm

Answer: turnovers. Storyline for last 4 years.

This is the ONLY real question Richt needs to answer when thinking about staff changes. Florida is the key to the SEC and the Natl’ Champ.

Tebow vs. Stafford

November 30th, 2009
7:10 pm

Why did Stafford improve each year at Georgia while Tebow got worse? could be coaching. Meyer saw Tebow’s talent decline from 2007 to 2008, and again from 2008-2009. All stats pretty much went down.

Said to see it happen.

Willie is Not the Problem!

November 30th, 2009
7:13 pm

AJC wanted Willie fired last year. Didn’t happen. Richt knows Willie can coach–2007, he shut down 3 big time offenses with brilliant schemes.

the problem is TURNOVERS. The Florida series proves that.

Georgia beats Georgia in the Floridia game 3 out 4 of the last 4 years FALLING ON IT’S OWN SWORD with 3 or 4 TO’s a game.

The game we won? o TO’s.

Hey now……

Proof Willie is Not the Problem!

November 30th, 2009
7:23 pm

Exhibit A- Head to Head Comparison:
Willie’s D gave up NO 100 yard rushers ALL SEASON. That’s a tremendoous stat. Should be good enough for the offense to win, has in the past with Richt before 2009, about 93% of the time.

Bobo only got 2 100 yard rushers this year. 2 great games Bobo called, Arkansas and Ga Tech.

Record when Willie had an amazing NO 100 Yard rusher game:
7-5
Bobo didn’t help Willie much when Willie produced

Record when Bobo had an amazing 100 yard rusher game:
2-0
Willie helped Bobo a lot when Bobo produced

Exhibit B-
Bobo has 3 or 4 turonovers in 4 out of 5 losses. Willie did not give up a 100 yard rusher in a SINGLE LOSS.

Proof Willie is Not the Problem!, Interesting stats. I do not think the scheme is the problem. The real problem has been our lack of having a consistent pass rush from the DE’s since Howard’s senior year. I think that problem will be gone next year with the development of Houston, Washington, Robinson and others (including 6 DE’s in this years recruiting class).

The only real criticism I have for him is the lack of take aways. We are not doing a good job at stripping the ball and the CB’s getting their heads around to intercept balls.

You can’t blame the defensive coordinator for everything. No defense, whether it is Alabama or Indiana, will do very well if they are constantly on the field. Our offense has done nothing all season. I wish I could find a stat for number of “3 and outs” in a season. Also, our offense turns the ball over and give the other teams a short field to work with. Our defense will be much improved next year with the studs we have coming back. Look at brandon smith, rambo, houston, and pray that Rennie and Rashad come back next year. PRAY

Fire Willy! We lost to the Vols, we lost to UF, we blew it against UK, and we were one pass away from losing to Tech in THEIR trap game. That is were HE has brought us to. Get rid of him! He couldn’t force Tech to punt once. How many times are we going to beat them if we can’t make them punt??? Can we count on Nesbitt to get hurt? Does he really get credit for the Jaybo (not even a real D1 QB) interception or the QB/RB exchange fumble? Can we count on any of this next year? Do we understand that CPJ is making progress regardless of this game? Writing is on the wall and we better do something.

Other teams saw the writing on the wall and made their changes (AUB, TN, MSST)..

Yes, CWM needs to go on. He has not instilled the “we attack the ball” attitude on UGA’s D. He has had the time and that feature left with CBVG.
Yes, and this is KEY ………C Mike Booboo ALSO NEEDS to go. Why? His side of the ball has fumbled and fumbled and thrown pic sixes ( MS & JC ) and THAT IS WHY the D has struggled. THAT is why. See the Flroida game in 08 ……….MS and No Show fumbled and threw quick pic sixes.

OFFENSE is THE REAL PROBLEM. OFFENSE generated turn overs is KEY to ALL or most of our D probs. Give anyone the ball on our 33 yard line time and time and time again and you have major probs and that leads to a terrible scoring D stat. CWM did not cause that problem, O did.

Second reason why UGA has been lousy ………Special teams on punt and kick off COVERAGES.

With a new hard nosed D coach and continued pic sixes and fumbles near OUR GOAL line, losuy penalties and kick coverages, then there will be no W/L change. See? Bobo and Fabris AND CWM need to go in that order.

We better hope that Gardner and Searels are not hustled away. They will be this year and then, on O line, D line, we will be in very deep dodo. Any great or even good performances this season are due to them alone.

Go Dawgs!!

Jeff is this your idea of analysis?

The season ended two days ago and just because Virginia and Notre Dame made coaching changes doesn’t mean Georgia has to follow suit. Richt will be playing a chess game over the next week or so. Each coach is a chess piece and wants you make one move, it has ramifications on the other pieces. Richt is dealing with a Recruiting Coordinator who doesn’t have a signed contract and probably wants a DC title if he can get it. He also has a Co-DC in the mix and all the rest of the assistants on the defensive side of the ball. Almost each one Richt has a long standing relationship with, so this is NOT going to be an easy process.

I have no idea what he’s going to do, but I do know he’s measuring each move carefully and that’s all we can ask for as fans.

December 1st, 2009

Sorry I’m late, but had to chime in here. In my mind’s eye, Coach Richt seems to cover up for Willie. Blaming turnovers and field position for the D’s poor performance. Praising the D when few points are scored (usually, it is due to a lack of opponent’s offense… LSU comes to mind).

Whatever happened to this mantra?
“Keep ‘em Out of the End Zone. Period. No Matter What!”

When the opponent gets the ball on our 35-yard line, the fans yell “Hunker Down,” not “Lay Down.”

Hey D Backs, try to at least stay in the receivers’ zipcode. Hey D Line, get a push every third series or so! Hey LBs, when you blitz, try to avoid the RB… he’s blocking you. I know this is confusing stuff, because sometimes you’re tackling the RB.

Coach Richt, I understand how TOs can impact the number of points we give up. I don’t won’t TO as much as the next guy, but they happen (even with a good offense). A TO is not a license for the D to provide little or no resistance at all.

Same can said about long KO and punt returns. Know what else can be said about long returns? I’ve been watching UGA football for 39 years, and I ain’t never seen nothin’ like this coverage. I mean, where are they? If you ever see our cover guys, they’re runnin so fast, they’re outta control. Can’t make a tackle w/o body control, kid! Who runs that show? Fabris? Whenever Willie leaves, you go with him, okay?

One more thought about turnovers. I remember when Willie’s ‘prevent’ defense took over for BVG’s attacking style. Willie’s first year, there was this huge drop in the number of opponent’s TOs from the previous year.

That winter, Willie was quoted several times in the AJC and AHB about how he was gonna change that with a more attacking style. But when next year came, nothing changed. Our D didn’t cause TOs the next year either. Or the next year. Or this year. Willie, you’ve had four years to fix this particular problem. If anything, it’s gotten worse.

Willie, you’re probably a wonderful fellow. And I appreciate your effort, enthusiasm, and commitment to the program. But I’m sorry to say, you ain’t keepin’ ‘em outta the endzone enough for this OldSkoolDawg!

My guess is Spurrier, but could be the Cincy coach or Boise S. guy or Charlie Strong, I think Florida wants an offensive type Head C. for 2010.

UGA needs a few more play-makers on the D side of the ball to compliment Rennie. I just didn’t see the impact type players on our D as in the past such as Pollack, Thomas Davis, and Marcus Howard.

You either have speed or you don’t. Coaching won’t do a lot to remedy that problem.

Once again, Schultz is wrong wrong wrong.

What good does it do to “end speculation”? How about let Martinez focus on doing his job for our final game and continue recruiting and retaining the players we’ve got, then make changes when we have the time and energy to spend on them? Oh, right, because we aren’t moronic effing Virginia or Notre Dame, neither of whom have beat 4 teams with winning records under their last coach’s tenure.

When we want to slip into football anonymity, we’ll follow in the footsteps of the ND and UVA “programs.” And we’ll DEFINITELY call on that moron Jeff Schultz to lead us there.

The only concern is the recruits. What you and me think means nothing. I think it will be a demotion and let Willie decide if he wants to resign or stay. Jeff who do your insiders say they are looking at for the position. That is do you have any insiders. When was the last time you broke a story.

Jeff Shultz, you are truly pathe-TECH. Have you ever played a down of football in your life?

Coach Johnson should also be examining his D Coordinator situation after getting pancaked and gashed all night long to the tune of ~350 yards.
