Can Georgia Tech avoid a Dog hangover against Clemson?

Paul Johnson's next challenge is having his players get past the loss to Georgia. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Paul Johnson's next challenge is helping Josh Nesbitt and others get past the loss to Georgia. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Paul Johnson told everybody who would listen last week that the Georgia game would not define Georgia Tech’s season. Now all he has to do is convince his players.

The Jackets won eight straight games and had a chance to finish the season with a top-5 ranking. But they blew that by losing at home to Georgia Saturday, 30-24, creating the ACC’s worst nightmare: a championship game between two teams, Tech and Clemson, coming off losses to pedestrian SEC teams. The ACC title game now matches No. 12 (Tech, which fell from seventh) vs. No. 25 (Clemson, which fell from 15th).

But the bigger issue for Johnson is making sure his players get past what just happened. This easily is the biggest defeat the Jackets must bounce back from since he took over. It’s bigger than last year’s loss at North Carolina, and the even the early season defeat at Miami.

Three years ago under Chan Gailey, the Jackets were 9-2, then collapsed and lost consecutive games to Georgia, Wake Forest (ACC title) and West Virginia (Gator Bowl) to close the season.

Asked about a potential hangover, Johnson said Sunday:  “It’s always a concern. When you have a big game like that one and you come out on the wrong end, and certainly it was a game we all wanted to win and we took seriously, you have to turn the page. We talked about that for eight straight weeks [during a winning streak]. We talked about it in the locker room [Saturday] night. We have to move on. The regular season is over. We finished 10-2, and that’s better than a lot of people probably thought we could do. Now we have a chance to play for the conference championship. We’ve earned it. Now let’s go play.”

Those were the right words. We’ll find out about the actions soon enough. I’m inclined to think Tech will bounce back. Question: Are you confident the Jackets can avoid a collapse similar to the one we saw in 2006?

REMEMBER IN THIS STATE THE PEDESTRIAN HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY,SO THANKS FOR YIELDING

Georgia had a lot more riding on this game than Tech….like jobs. We have had a terrible defense all year and the only thing that did not make them look worse is that they were not on the field as much. If I were a UGA fan I would be upset and wondering why the dogs did not play like that all year. Georgia did not show me anything I did not already know. And we almost pulled it out anyway it but we didn’t and I can live with that. We are competitive again and evey UGA fan knows it. In the scheme of things this is only bad for the ACC which I believe is out to lunch with the idea of a championship game when basketball is just getting underway. ACC FANS HAVE PROVEN THEY DON’T CARE. They should go back to a non championship game scenario.

Perhaps if Georgia had played GT’s schedule– instead of the one of the hardest in the country– the writer wouldn’t be calling UGA a “pedestrian” team. Ditto for South Carolina. Let’s face it– the ACC is still a basketball conference.

Oh, and SuperB – GT ALSO had one of the toughest schedules in the nation, ask just about any pollster or reference any computer poll you wish.
Interestingly enough, before this weekend Sagarin’s SOS ranking actually had Tech’s as the more difficult schedule. Of course, you playing us had the effect of inflating your SOS and deflating ours.

Still, have to give credit where credit is due: UGA’s offense layed the wood on us. Congrats.

The comment about this win or lose not defining your year is HORSECRAP! The first time I heard this statement, I couldn’t believe it was said, thought it was taken out of context. The minute I found that in fact CPJ had said this, I knew we were in trouble. I can’t believe that CPJ was so worried about a 6 and 5 team that he tries to hedge his bet,so to speak! No, this loss is not the end of the world, but to any REAL GT fan and especially alum, this game is as important as any! We must be able to WIN this game to bring our program back to respectability. PERIOD! The fact that we can’t take care of business playing a very AVERAGE to BAD team is unbelievable! The Defense needs to be addressed, and if CPJ doesn’t take the appropriate steps to get a coach that can address this issue, we are in for a rocky road in the future.

Congratulations to UGA for a hard fought win Saturday night. I, for one, have been spouting off this year about the SEC being down with the exception of Bama and Florida. When two middle tier SEC teams beat the two division winners from the ACC on the same day, I think that argument is settled. I’m willing to admit I was dead wrong on that one.

As for the UGA fans who think Tech would finish at the bottom of the SEC or that UGA should be a top-ten team this year, you’re smoking crack.

And lastly, to those of us who are Tech fans and have been talking about our concerns regarding our lack of defense this season, I think Saturday confirmed our fears. For those who have claimed to have “inside” knowledge of the program and keep saying that the defense (and its coaching) is fine, please post your explanation for Saturday night’s embarrassment.

Hopefully, we regroup for Saturday’s ACCCG. GO JACKETS!

“First of all, congrats to Georgia. They had a gameplan, executed it better than they thought they could and won the game. I think both sides would have to agree that last night was Georgia’s best game of the year and it was GT’s worst game of the year. Given everything that happened, we still had the ball in their territory with 2 minutes left and a chance to win. The leghumpers can pound their collective chests for another year and brag about how awesome the SEC is, but last night was more of a fluke than anything else.”

Fluke – really buddy, come on, we beat you guys every year but now its a fluke. I tell you what was a fluke, last year. Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t we won 8 of the last 9 in this series? Doesn’t that put UGA at 60 for the series to Techs what 39. Not a fluke, it was reality.

This was a really disappointing loss especially when a “complete” game was expected. Instead the offense just couldn’t score enough points to make up for the ones the defense gave up. I’ve been saying all season Womack is not a a good defensive coach, he was even out-coached by Martinez. That says a lot.WE either put him on a Grey hound bus or get him some help but we can’t go through another year like this.

This one had to hurt bad (and I’m glad it hurts so bad) because even your best team in 20 years can’t beat a mediocre UGA team at home with two weeks to prepare. What is interesting is to see the Tech fans top 10 responses to losing to UGA:
1. Hide under the cover
2. Pretend it was really close and we could have won
3. Pretend to be Florida Fans
4. Pretend winning 10 games in the A-she-she is a real accomplishment
5. Pretend it really doesn’t matter if we beat UGA… right
6. Start talking about academics
7. Call UGA fans Rednecks
8. Call the players thugs
9. Say UGA plays dirty…. hurt Nesbitt on purpose
10.Say we’re going to the Orange bowl when they haven’t beaten Clemson yet.

On the other hand, after losing to Clemson and losing a bowl game Tech will be lucky to finish in the top 20. Best team in 20 years probably finishes #18.

Congrats to UGA for a well executed game plan. Been saying this all year, the key to any game is execution. UGA did not play anywhere near it’s average 2009 self, fewer penalties and turnovers. GT definitely shot themselves in the foot by allowing UGA 10 pts off turnovers. It’s part of the game.

There are many things to point to in this game with respect to GT: Nesbitt’s injury which led to Jaybo throwing an interception, losing Anderson-the middle of an already depleted defensive line, the somewhat confounding play calling of the last series, the dropped ball. But, give credit where credit is due, UGA came out and played a very good game. Establishing a running game and not relying on Cox was the perfect storm given GT’s defensive situation. UGA was the better team Saturday night.

But Saturday night is not the season and we must not focus on that game alone. We have another game this Saturday which is actually bigger as far as its’ implications to the season as a whole.

Jeff Sagarin BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 17.

Kenneth Massey BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 18.

USA Today Coaches’ Poll has ranked UGA Number 33.

Anderson – Hester Seattle Times Poll has ranked UGA Number 24.

BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 28.

BCS Computer Polls have ranked UGA Number 24.

There are now no ACC teams ranked in the AP Poll nor Coaches’ Poll Top 10. Georgia Tech is no longer the top-ranked ACC team; Virginia Tech is Number 11 in both the Coaches’ Poll and AP Poll.

Clemson dropped out of the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25.

SEC has Florida Number 1 in both Coaches’ and AP Polls. AP Poll has Alabama Number 2, and USA Today Coaches’ Poll has Alabama Number 3.

BCS has Florida Alabama Number 1 and Number 2.

UGA is projected for $5.6 million dollar Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against the top-ranked ACC team

Virginia Tech, again pitting the top non-BCS ACC team against the 5th best SEC team.

Tennessee is projected for $3 million dollar Outback Bowl in Tampa against Wisconsin.

Nebraska who has not played any team in the BCS Top 33 except for 1 Loss to Number 11 Virginia Tech plays Texas to see if the BCS would pit Alabama Florida for both The SEC Championship Game and the BCS National Championship Game. A Nebraska win could bring that game up for the 1st time pitting 2 teams from the same conference in the BCS National Championship Game. Root for Nebraska, but they haven’t beat any team in the BCS Top 33.

Tennessee is Number 46 in the BCS Poll (UGA Number 28.) Tennessee beat no team in the BCS Top 25, no team in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25 and no team in the AP Poll Top 25.

ACC is 9-11 against BCS conferences.

SEC is 10-4 against BCS Conferences.

SEC 10-4 is by far the best of any conference against BCS Conferences, as no Conference has more wins against BCS Conferences and no Conference is close to the SEC Winning Percentage against BCS Conferences.

SEC is 31-6 against all 1-A teams. This, too, is by far the best of all conferences.

No BCS Conference team lost to any 1-AA team, except the ACC who Lost not once but twice to 1-AA teams.

SEC out of conference is 42-6 by far the best in the nation of all conferences.

ACC does not have a winning record against The SEC, The Big XII, the Big Ten (11), nor the PAC-10.

ACC is 2-5 against SEC this season so far.

There are only 2 conferences with top-ranked teams, The SEC with the Top 2 and the Big XII with 1 of the Top 3. After that, all the weenie conferences are ahead of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and every Big Ten (11) team.

TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State are all 3 ranked ahead in every poll of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and ahead of every Big Ten (11) team.

ACC does not even have a Top 10 ranked team, again. None.

The same as it is every year.

Average BCS Ranking of every team in every conference shows SEC Number 37, Big East Number 40, PAC-10 Number 41, ACC Number 48, Big Ten (11) Number 50 and the Big XII dragging up the rear at Average BCS Ranking of Number 51.

Big XII is really really really really bad.

Notre Dame is 6-6 against a soft soft soft schedule. Notre Dame beat no Top 25 team in any poll. Just imagine losing to BCS Ranked Number 83 Michigan. Notre Dame’s best win is over BCS Ranked Number 56 team, Nevada for God’s sake.

TCU played a really soft schedule. They will obviously lose if they play any reasonable opponent.
Oregon. Thank Oregon of the PAC-10 for Losing to Boise State for why Boise State will take away the BCS at large big from the ACC.

UGA SoS is Number 6 in the nation with the win over Number 12 Georgia Tech.

Tennessee vols SoS is Number 44 in the nation with the win over Number 28 UGA.

Georgia Tech SoS is Number 48 in the nation with the win over Number 11 Virginia Tech; yet Virginia Tech is ranked AHEAD of Georgia Tech in both the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and ahead of Georgia Tech in the AP Poll.

4th best SEC team is UGA in the BCS Rankings at Number 28.

4 SEC East teams are 7-5 tied for 2nd in the SEC East behind Florida. 2 of those have a losing record in The SEC Kentucky and South Carolina. South Carolina is ranked way ahead of Tennessee vols at Number 31 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll which the vols are not in, and Number 35 for South Carolina in the BCS Poll. Tennessee vols are Number 46 in the BCS Poll because the vols beat no team ranked in the Top 25 of the polls. South Carolina beat no team in the Top 25 of the polls either, but South Carolina has far better wins than Tennessee vols with South Carolina’s win over Ole Miss and win over Climpsum Farmers to ruin the ACC Chumpionship Game with UGA’s major assistance dropping Number 12 Georgia Tech from any discussion of anything this morning.

SEC Rankings 2009 :

1.Florida 12-0. BCS # 1.

2.Alabama 12-0. BCS # 2.

3.LSU 9-3 BCS Number 13.

4.UGA 7-5 vs # 6 SoS and BCS # 28.

5.Arkansas 7-5 BCS # 30.

6.Ole Miss 8-4 vs # 59 SoS BCS # 33.

7.South Carolina 7-5 BCS # 35.

8.Mississipppi State 5-7 vs. # 1 SoS and BCS Number 44.

9.Tennessee vols 7-5 vs # 44 SoS and BCS Number 46.

10.Auburn 7-5 BCS # 48.

11.Kentucky 7-5 BCS # 51.

Ole Miss could get a better bowl bid than UGA at 8-4, but when you see SoS # 59 for Ole Miss and # 6 for UGA at 7-5, the nod goes to UGA.

UGA gets the 4th Bowl bid in The SEC. Clearly.

Every AJ-C sportswriter picked Georgia Tech. I picked GA to beat Tech and South Carolina to beat Clemson, relegating the ACC Chumpionship Game to nothingness.

I’m confused about bragging about various conferences. The SEC has a couple powerhouses in Alabama and Florida that dominate the conference, but UK, Vandy, and others are simply not top rate teams. Sure, Alabama and Florida can run the conference, and LSU has a good shot most of the time, but the ACC is very competitive. At the start of the year, VT and MIA were picked to battle for the division, but Tech managed to win a tough game against VT and Miami lost a couple close ones. Both teams still get respect. Clemson is having a great year and I’m looking forward to the rematch. So not every conference needs an undefeated or even one-loss team at the top for it to be good. Without the loss to MIA Tech would be up there still. Georgia Tech has played a very exciting season and I can’t wait for good things to come. They have found a way to win and the defense has shown up at critical points.

At the beginning of the season my (neutral) brother-in-law said we need to see our season as more than beating UGA, and I finally see the wisdom of that. I’d love to see Tech at 11-1, but 10-2 and #10 in the BCS standings? A shot at the ACC championship? It’s been a great year. It’s a disappointing loss, considering we’ve been in a position to play spoiler to UGA far more often. I know the significance of one game and how it seems like it can make a poor season so great. Well Saturday’s loss is different. It makes a great season a little less good. It can’t define this season. In the 11 prior games Tech has played in a competitive division and secured a shot at their first BCS bowl (since the inception of the BCS). Hopefully the first of many. BTW, have you seen the BCS rankings? Despite being picked #11 and #12 in the human polls the computer rankings have us at #8, which is why we’re #10 BCS. The computers take GT ahead of OSU and Iowa, probably because the computers don’t think, oh, how embarrassing. They don’t look at how recent the wins or losses were. They look at the quality of the opponents (ACC?). So a chance to shine in the ACC championship and Orange Bowl, change opinions… GT may even be a top 5 team going into next year.

There is a little pride lost. We have to listen to drivel from UGA fans about a game that wasn’t played clean in the first place (not one holding call?). But we have had a great season and it makes us hope for great things to come.
