Matt Ryan lost to one of his idols, Donovan McNabb, last season in Philadelphia. This time, he'll probably have to beat him for the Falcons to make the playoffs (Curtis Compton/AJC).
Two months ago, there was great anticipation for the Falcons-Philadelphia game Dec. 6. Why? Because it would be Michael Vick’s return to Atlanta.
There should still be great anticipation for the Falcons-Philadelphia game. Why? Because if the Falcons don’t win that night, they may not make the playoffs.
Having lost four out of their last five games and dropping to 5-5, the Falcons logically are out of the NFC South race. They probably have to go at least 4-2 (maybe 5-1) in the final six games to win an NFC wild card spot. Strange things happen in the NFL. But the Falcons have made things difficult on themselves because they’ve already lost four NFC games and head-to-head meetings with the New York Giants (6-4) and Dallas Cowboys (7-3, a wild card competitor if they don’t win the NFC East). Losing to the Eagles (6-4) would significantly diminish chances of winning any tiebreaker scenarios.
In short, the Falcons haven’t left themselves any wiggle room. They still have at least three easily winnable games (two vs. Tampa Bay, one vs. Buffalo) and another one against the sliding New York Jets. But winning a playoff spot outright will be difficult.
As a follow up to last week, here’s another breakdown of how things look.
Seven for the wild cards
♦ 1. Philadelphia (6-4, 5-2): That was a big win for the Eagles over Chicago Sunday night because it raised their NFC record to 5-2, best among the wild card candidates. The Eagles have an easy game next week (Washington), then play the Falcons, Giants, 49ers, Broncos and Cowboys. But they’re still missing running back Brian Westbrook, whose status for the rest of the season is uncertain because of two concussions in a span of three weeks.
♦ 2. Green Bay (6-4 overall, 5-3 in NFC): It’s hard to see the Packers missing the playoffs. They have a better overall and conference record than the Falcons and four of the next five games are against the Lions (2-8), Ravens (5-5), Bears (4-5) and Seahawks (3-7).
♦ 3. N.Y. Giants (6-4, 4-3): They hold two tiebreaker edges over the Falcons (conference, head to head), but the schedule the next three weeks is rugged: at Denver, Dallas, Philadelphia.
♦ 4. Falcons (5-5, 4-4): They’re 1-4 since a 4-1 start. That’s the wrong kind of turnaround. In addition to the poor conference record, they’re also only 1-5 on the road, but remaining road games against the N.Y. Jets and Tampa Bay both are winnable.
♦ 5. San Francisco (4-6, 4-3): The 49ers started the season 3-1 but are 1-5 since, and the slide started with a loss to the Falcons. But the next two games are against Jacksonville and Seattle, so they could hang around a while.
♦ 6. Carolina (4-6, 4-4): The Falcons have split two games with the Panthers. Carolina lost to Miami four days after beating the Falcons and could go 2-4 with this remaining schedule: at N.Y. Jets, Tampa Bay, at New England, Minnesota, at N.Y. Giants, New Orleans.
♦ 7. Chicago (4-6, 2-5): The Falcons actually hold two tiebreaker edges (conference, head to head) over the Bears. But at this point Chicago doesn’t look like a competitor, especially with a remaining schedule that includes two games against Minnesota and one against Green Bay.
So there’s this week’s update. How confident are you of the Falcons’ chances? I’ve also put up a poll.

I’m not terrbibly unhappy with this team. At the beginning of last year, I would have been happy if we made the playoffs within three years. We did that way sooner. There are some spots that need to be addressed, but I’m confident that will be taken care of. Another blog is still moaning about letting Foxworth go. .have you seen how well he’s doing this year? Our decision makers are doing a good, methodical job of rebuilding this team.

Arthante Lafleur — I agree Falcons have their work cut out for them, but I wouldn’t assume the Philadelphia and New Orleans games are automatic losses. Eagles are missing Westbrook. Saints’ defense is average.
“I would like some of that you are smoking”
- McCoy rushed for 99 yards & you better believe Vick will be in the mix
- The Saints defense is far from average and I think they are 10-0

I have no real worries about Freeman. He has started 3 games and gotten progressively worse in each. In 3 starts, he has 5 TDs vs. 5 INTs. 175 ypg with a completion percentage of 51%. The only stat where Freeman’s will likely be higher is rushing yardage, he’s averaging just over 28 ypg vs. Ryan’s 4.

Every one of Pat White’s Wildcat cameos is the exact opposite of Michael Vick’s cameos in Philly. With White, anything is possible. With Vick, it’s just depressing. This might be the single worst comeback that didn’t involve a porn star, wrestler, musician or Magic Johnson. Can we all agree that (A) he lost his legs; (B) pre-2007 Vick is gone and not coming back; and (C) it doesn’t matter where he plays next year, since he won’t be good, anyway? You know how you can block people on Twitter? I wish I could block all “Where is Michael Vick going in 2010?” stories from my eyes and ears. Doesn’t matter. We don’t care.

I like i said before… Falcons still got a chance only if they win against Tampa first then we go from there. Issues which i said before… speeds and athletic guys dont win championship.. couple of good old Vets and mix it in with some young guys then you are able to work in young guys in and out. When Brian Williams went down i knew that we were in trouble b/c no one really in the backfield have any experience. Eventhough Brian Williams wasnt as fast or athletic as houston or hill or even grimes he had good knowledge of the game. He anticpate where the ball was going and he knew how to play the ball. Getting Hill from St. louis was not consider a Veteran corner cuz he hardly played cuz he was hurt and played for a bad team. You cant get rid of all your Vets and just sign all new young players eventhough we are much faster on Def. Speed is only good if you know how to use it. with that said.. im out!!

I think alot of people need to put this team into perspective. Coming into last season experts projected us to win five games at best. We had a RARE turnaround last year and now everyone is looking for us to be on the level with the Pats and Colts. One thing that has been consistent with the Dimitroff/Smith regime is that we beat teams that we’re supposed to beat and lose to teams that are usually favored over us. The reason that our road record stinks like it does this year is because of the competition we’ve faced: N.E., N.O., Dallas, Carolina, and N.Y. I look for us to beat the Jets and T.B. on the road, beat T.B. at home, and split N.O. and Philly. I’ve been a Falcons fan for about twelve years and I am proud of the progress that we have made.

The Falcon Vs. Eagles is now shaping up to be a must win, IT IS A MUST WIN!!! We have lost the tie breakers with NYG and Dallas. We can ill afford a loss vs. the Eagles. We can only afford to lose to New Orleans and even that may end up being a must win. The way I see the NFC shaping up on teams trying to make the playoffs. Green Bay, NYG and Atl will fight for the last 2 wild card spots. Atlanta may not make it.
1. New Orleans 15-1
2. Minnesota 14-2
3. Arizona 11-5
4. Dallas 10-6
Wild card teams.
NYG 10-6
ATL 10-6

I’m gonna post this just so I can A) Stomp on Choke’s anthill and see how fast he posts a snide reply, and B) See how fast he throws out a statistic that we’ve seen already, followed by a smiley face
Joe Montana’s 1st full year’s stats (which happened to be his 3rd year in the league after he got 8 starts his first two years while apprenticing behind Steve DeBerg) were as follows:
16 starts 13-3 record 63.7 Comp % 19 TD 12 INT 3,596 Yards Yards/Catch 11.5
Matt Ryan’s 1st full year’s stats, which happened to be his rookie year because the team had to wipe the previous year from its memory for obvious reasons:
16 starts 11-5 record 61.1Comp % 16 TD 12 INT 3,440 Yards Yards/Catch 13.0
And CHOKE, before you start throwing out this season’s stats, which can be interpreted any way you like, depending on what you want them to say, here are Ryan’s stats this year, but you already have them memorized:
10 starts 5-5 Record 16 TD 12 INT 2,276 Yards 59.3 Comp% Yards/Catch 11.2
Lo and behold, here are Montana’s stats from the year following his first full year as a starter:
9 starts 3-6 Record 17 TD 11 INT 2,613 Yards 61.6 Comp % Yards/Catch 12.3
Pretty darn similar aren’t they? And let me head you off at the pass on a couple of things that you probably want to say: yes, the 49rs won the Super Bowl in 1981, but then again they had the 2nd ranked defense in the NFL that year with two pro bowl starters (Ronnie Lott, a Hall of Famer and Dwight Hicks). Their defense allowed only 250 points all season which was 107 points less than they scored, and they had a +23 takeaway margin. The Falcons defense last year, in Ryan’s first full year, had no Pro Bowlers, was ranked 21st/25th vs. the run/pass in the NFL, had a 66 point differential in points for/points against, and had a -3 turnover margin. So you can see that actually having a defense matters, and no one man can carry an entire team.
Montana’s career yards per completion: 11.9
Montana’s career interception percentage: 2.6
Ryan’s career yards per completion: 12.2
Ryan’s career interception percentage: 3.0
Prediction: Choke will pick one item out of this entire post and post a single comment that suits him, then post a smiley face because that’s all he is capable of mustering up in the face of the above FACTS. If Atlanta’s defense had been of Pittsburgh or Baltimore quality last year (they were the second ranked rushing and passing defenses in the NFL, much like San Fran’s in 1981).
Have fun with this one…looking forward to your smiley faces and single-minded reply.

I’ll tell you all what these Falcons have the hard part of their schedule behind them. They are reminding me a lot of the Hawks because they don’t want to win on the road. With that being said I still believe we make the playoffs and when we do, we’ll be dangerous because of our tough schedule we had the 4th toughest schedule in the league. We are still a very very young team the only real issue I have with this team is the secondary but I can not remember the Falcons EVER being strong in the secondary. All we have to do is make it to the playoffs and we can make a run. Let’s fire VanGorder ( I am a Georgia Southern Alumni so I know from experience he sucks) and everything will be better! Let’s go Falcons!

Forgot to finish a thought there:
If Atlanta’s defense had been of Pittsburgh or Baltimore quality last year (they were the second ranked rushing and passing defenses in the NFL, much like San Fran’s in 1981), then the Falcons would have gone much deeper into the playoffs or even all the way like ‘Frisco in 81.
And yes, CHOKE, if the Falcons D had been more stout in 2002 and 2004 then we would have gone deeper then, too. I would have loved to have gone into Philly and beaten them in the NFC Championship but guess what: they scored more points than us and we lost. Look at the Super Bowl winners this decade: Steelers x 2, Giants, Patriots x 3, Ravens, Bucs, Colts. See a theme? D-Fence (to borrow a popular sign from every game you ever see on TV). The overall rank of the last 10 Super Bowl winner’s defenses in total points allowed was 1, 17, 23, 3, 2, 1, 1, 6, 1, and 4. If you have a top 6 or better defense, you are winning the Super Bowl 80% of the time. Go back another 10 years and the Super Bowl winner’s defenses were ranked 8, 6, 1, 3, 6, 2, 5, 2, 1, and 3. So taking this a bit further means that the Super Bowl champion had a top 8 defense 18 out the the last 20 years.
OK, so now you probably want to say build a defense, “Dump the Chump” and the Falcons will be fine, and don’t forget the smiley face
. But I would tell you that the majority of the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks in the last two decades were named Roethlisberger, Manning, Brady, Warner, Elway, Favre, Aikman, Young, and Montana. Care to list the present or future Hall of Famers on this list? You still have to have a quarterback to win, even with a top ranked D (with a couple of aberrations, i.e. 2002 and 2000 with Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer, but those years again had #1 ranked defenses).
Shhhh, don’t tell anyone: I’m actually beginning to enjoy your simpleminded smiley faces and stat regurgitating. If you actually started to bring anything original to the table then you wouldn’t be the same old CHOKE. Abuse Ryan all you want, but he is going to be here for a LONG time and post a LOT of stats, and as long as you are around you will have to put up with them. Enjoy!
Manny

Here are my thoughts, now that I have put some mindshare into this:
By the Eagles game, both Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood would be back. And they will be playing at home- where the Falcons are undefeated. There will be nothing wrong with the offense, and Matt Ryan will not have the pressure of carrying a team.
Here’s what scares me: That porous pass defense going against McNabb. And the fact that we might not have adequate pressure on McNabb scares me too. But they did lose to Oakland because Oakland kept McNabb on the sideline by running the ball. Perhaps we can win this one too.
My heart and mind saying that we CAN win. But my better judgment says that we WON’T. Why? Because the Eagles will be up for this game. They are not overlooking the Falcons. They will gameplan on taking out our running game and daring Ryan to beat them. And that’s what scares me. I have very little confidence that Ryan will step up.
In other words, if we lose this game, it’s the QB.

In high school you learn when defending look for the ball when the receiver looks for the ball. I have seen this in Falcon defenders to just play the man and not the ball. You can easily intercept the pass following the ball plus you do not get called for interference. Playing the man does not workin the pros…get back to what you learned in high school….Grimes Houston Hill etc…\
Also its a joke to talk timing regarding field goal kicking that should be addressed at practice not after week 11 in the nfl.Defense missing any kind of “moxie” this year cannot keep giving up 30 plus points and expect to pull out these wins.

Jeff is way ahead of himself, there’s no guarantee that the Falcons can beat the Tampa Bay Bucs, when they come to town. Okay, best case scenerio the Falcons get in the playoffs. Who could they beat to advance- with this defense? This team is not the Arizona Cardinals of last year..If we had a close playoff game, could we rely on Jason Elam to pull of through?

You and Bradley, got to mention Vick any way, any time you can. What was MB’s point in comparing the first 26 games of Ryan and Vick? Why not include Bartkowski? Stir that pot boys, why the fascination with someone no longer associated with Atlanta. It’s a part of the city’s past I would like to forget about and move on. I wonder if the byline boys have little imagination and are going to ride that pony until the newspaper shuts down because blogs don’t equate to revenue.
**************************************************************************************************************
I believe the Falcons can win out the rest of the season, that’s 11-5 and playoff bound. Philadelphia will probably finish out 3-3, 9-7 for the season. Green Bay has 2 games left at Lambeau but I see them finishing 4-2, 10-6. The Giants looked better than they are against the Falcons with that week off, but could still finish 4-2, 10-6. So yes, Falcons VS Eagles shaping up as a must win, like duh…..!!! (Yes, I know a 6-0 finish is a tall order but that is what they will need to do in order to have a 17th game, they are at a tie breaker deficit.)

Jeff Schultz, the Eagles game is a “must win” game. Even if the Falcons do miss the playoffs, edged out via “tie-breakers,” I think Arthur Blank set out, as a minimum performance goal for this season, to end the 40-something year track record for failing to put together “back-to-back” winning seasons. To do that, Atlanta must go 3-2-1 over the remaining six games. If they go 4-2, they’ll finish 9-7, and accomplish that feat. But 9-7 won’t get them into the playoffs. 10-6 might not get them in. But they’d at least have a real shot at it, at 10-6.
The Falcons lost a key member of their secondary a few weeks ago and haven’t been the same since. Atlanta’s secondary has been picked apart on 3rd down. Atlanta needs some depth at that position. Atlanta could not have afforded to lose that game at Carolina. That just might have been the straw that ended their playoff berth. When Atlanta lost to New Orleans, so thoroughly and convincingly, it told me how far the Falcons still had to go, to be a Super Bowl contender.
I just hope the Falcons can catch a break. They’ll need as many as they can get. They have no one but themselves to blame for where they are now. And if they actually ARE an elite NFL franchise, (I’m not saying they are,) then they’ll have their opportunity to show it, by going 6-0 to finish 11-5, and BE in the playoffs.

FalconsHeroZero or should we call you Richard: We drafted Peria Jerry who unfortunately and obviously you have forgotten is on IR. The Patriots wanted (and got) a 1st Round Draft choice for Seymour (age 30) who is often injured and is often a team disruption and camp holdout. The Falcons have committed to players of high caliber character on field and off and Seymour doesn’t fit that model recalling an incident back in ‘06 where he purposely stepped on an offensive lineman. He was a holdout immediately upon being traded to Oakland and I just don’t see him as contributing to that locker room team championship mentality. A Pro Bowler yes, a Hall of Famer no.
The Hall of Fame Mission Statement:
To honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to professional football
To preserve professional football’s historic documents and artifacts
To educate the public regarding the origin, development and growth of professional football as an important part of American culture
To promote the positive values of the sport
bobwhite: There is no doubt that for many many years the Falcons had a family ownership seemed better suited to the insurance business than to knowing how to run an NFL franchise. There is no hex or jinx, just a latent flamboyance of conceited pride that prevented the hiring of real football people to run it. In 2002 a gentleman with a mind for “improvement” purchased the team and immediately started hiring football people. Not too many business owners could have recovered so quickly and completely as did Arthur Blank from the debacle that was Vick and Petrino. We are in transisition from mediocrity to excellence to domination to possible dynasty, believe it………I do!
