Dogs fans, what’s your preference: Shreveport or nothing?

shreveportI listened to Mark Richt’s teleconference with media members Sunday night and had to chuckle (quietly) when somebody asked the Georgia coach about the bowl picture. “I’m not sure where [we're going],” Richt said, “but I can promise you we will be thankful anywhere we get to go.”

It wasn’t just what he said but the way he said it, as in: “We’ll take anything.”

A question for you: Would you prefer anything or nothing? Because the “anything” is not going to be very good.

The SEC bowl tie-ins are: 1.) BCS  bowl(s); 2.) Capital One; 3.) Outback; 4.) Chick-fil-A; 5.) Cotton; 6 and 7.) Liberty and Music City; 8.) Independence; 9.) Papajohns.com.

It’s looking more and more like Georgia is ticketed for one of the bottom two bowls, either the Independence in Shreveport, La., Dec. 28, or the Papajohns.com in Birmingham, Dec. 29. ESPN.com projections have them playing Connecticut (Papajohns.com) or Iowa State (Independence). CBSSports.com has Georgia playing Florida State in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Dec. 27.

If the Dogs lose to Georgia Tech, they will finish the regular season 6-6 (one of those wins coming over Tennessee Tech). Would you look forward to one of the lower-tier bowls, or has the season left you too upset to even want to watch or attend?

UGA is lucky to get to a bowl and should take any one they can get. It’s apparent that the team could use the extra practice time that goes with it. That extra practice will be beneficial to the freshman and redshirts especially Aaron Murray.

In my opinion, this team does not deserve a bowl trip. Soooooo tired of CMR being “thankful” for everything. This program needs to stay home and start putting a staff and plan of action to get the program where it belongs.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result! Saban and Meyer are perfectionists…CMR is a thankfulnists

15 additional practices to install new DC or OC or both schemes. 15 extra practices for one of the two Frosh QB’s to get reps. 15 extra practices for our young secondary to learn to play man coverage. We’d be foolish to pass on a bowl.

The extra practice time to get ready for a bowl would be invaluable, so, yes, they should go to whatever bowl will take them. Plus, you sportswriters like to cite meanimgless stats like “FSU has been to a bowl game for 27 consecutive years”. If UGA doesn’t go, it will break their “streak”. Then all the Tech fans could claim their streak is longer. Can’t have that, can we?

If offered they will accept. Bowl money is pooled for the conference and then divied up, so to not go would mean less money in the pool. Not gonna happen.

Besides the extra practice will give the younger guys a chance to get some reps.

Are any of you really thinking that the new qb’s are the answer? Remember these coaches are the ones that did the recruiting. Look at our so called talent. They have lost 8 games in the last two years, most in blow out fashion. Our coaches can’t coach the talent we have up, down or sideways.

They should practice for the bowl… and then instead of playing… stay home and practice. There’s no real reason to go out and see 5 more turnovers and 150 more yards of personal foul penalties.

After this season, I think it would be better not to go bowling in either Shreveport or Birmingham. This year has been awful, and the players have not responded to adversity at all. Time to move on and start over from scratch.

I am so stinking tired of hearing about how Joe cox gives us the best chance to win. he looks at one receiver every play. We should have put Murray in after the Tennessee game. I hate to say it but im ready for major changes in the coaching staff. Starting at the top. This team is undisciplined and just straight up stupid. I have been a ga fan my whole life and this has been one of the most frustrating seasons ever. However this has been in the making since 2006. It wasn’t Richt that won us all those games early in his career. It was Pollack, Greene, Shockley and the rest of those players. I think Richt is a great man but its time for change. We need someone who shakes things up like Meyer and Saban.

If the players who have worked hard and worked to get better want to go then by all means they should go bowling. However, if there are any players with 3 or more personal fouls during the season then they don’t travel. They can stay in Athens during the bowl game and run wind sprints with Willie Martinez. Also, any other players who with regularity committed stupid 5 and 10 yard penalties during the year should stay back run wind sprints with Willie. On the way home after the bowl loss Richt should do pushups on the bus- the number equalling the number of points given up this season. Then the morning after they should be up at 5:00 in the morning and as a team run a 5 mile run covering the hills of Athens.

Jeff – I agree with the concept of using the bowl game as an extra practice period, but should the seniors be rewarded for a 6 and 6 season? If we do play, they should look to play a lot of the younger players to prepare for next year. How many times do we look at some of the weaker teams playing in second hand bowl and think that there are just too many bowls? That is us this year. Also, maybe we should dedicate the bowl game as a farewell game for Willie and Mike. Let them decide where they want their farewell party to be held. Once again, we have allowed opposing teams to score an average of over 30 pts per game for the last few years. We will never win at that rate. Enough Said.

CMR promised changes after last year — no changes. i think we have the talent to compete, but we’re not doing it at all. that signals the need for coaching and administrative change and toughness. don’t cite saban or meyer; just ask ‘would vince have put up with this? and for how long? time to clean house.

UGA does not have the luxury of turning down a bowl “on principle.” UGA needs whatever bowl it can get and use the 15 bowl practices to work on getting ready for next year. Personally, I’d rather have the papajohns.com bowl because it’s in Birmingham. UGA may actually recruit a player out of Alabama once a decade–but never out of Louisiana. Plus, Birmingham is close, so those of us in the Atlanta area can drive over, go to the game and drive back all in one motion.

I went to the Weedwhacker bowl back in 1991. Despite winning, words cannot describe how much the whole experience just blew. Going there is not a reward for a season well-done, it’s a purgatory-like punishment for being bad, but not bad enough to get to stay home and sleep off Christmas dinner leftovers. And while there is a legitimate argument for the extra practice time, it’s only worth it if the practice time is productive and at this point I don’t know if I trust it to be.

Yes I’ll go and watch watch whichever bowl UGA plays in, sure we’ve had a dissapointing season but we should hold up our bowl committments to the rest of the SEC. Not fair for the rest of the SEC to share their bowl payout’s with us and us sitting at home watching.
Playing Fla. St. would be a good matchup, just getting to play another game should be enough of a payout for us after the season we’ve had.
Bowls were created to reward a team for their success, maybe winning 6 games this season is a success for UGA with the current coaches and team we have.
Jeff, don’t count us out as a 7 win team just yet.
Jeff you and Mark at the AJC think Tech will steamroll UGA on Saturday. Most of the TECH bloggers think the same,

Do the fair weather fans care about almost anything except what temporary elation they receive over a victory that they — the fair-weather fans — had 0.00 to 000000000000000001 to do with? Many don’t.

If the Dawgs go to a bowl game it is really an excellent time to work with underclassmen for the next season. The three weeks will be a bonus for the future starting QB, whomever that might be.

There’s so much pressure to win in football, but unlike other sports there isn’t as much practice time or length of season, so every practice is very important.

The long term success of any program is based on participation in bowl games. Even if CMR dumps any of his assistants after the season or bowl, it’s important for the players.

ok, this is my LAST comment on the subject, i promise. BUT, any one with a modicum of training and experience in psychology knows: many times more practice (e.g. one more game) can be damaging. if you are learning the wrong habits, behaviors, techniques, and motivation, STOP PRACTICES AT ONCE AND CHANGE COACHES. nothing makes a bad team worse than more practices. we haven’t improved this season, only gotten worse. no bowl, no more practices, change coaching (teaching) staff NOW.

Bowl games are for winners. If Mark Richt has any pride, he’ll decline a crappy bowl invitation and use the time to right the ship. We’re talking about a man who has lost control of his team and has no idea how to fix it.

I love this quote:

“I think all programs go through some cycles, and we’ve been on a pretty good upswing for quite some time,” Richt said. “This year has certainly been a downturn when it comes to record. It is what it is. Will we get it back on track and get back to the winning ways we’re used to? I think so. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.”

CMR, time and again over the years your teams have had huge mental lapses where they fold in big games inexplicably. Upswing? Your “upswing” came to a crashing halt when you peed your pants against Bama last year on national TV. Since that time, you’ve promised again and again that things would be fixed. The only thing you “fixed” was to give Willie and your other inept coaches raises. Now you “think” you can turn things around. I don’t have a great deal of confidence in that weak statement. You obviously “thought” you’d beat Kentucky just by showing up. How did that work out? We need a head coach who actually “knows” what to do. Richt ought to quit football and go into politics with that king of hedging. This man has taken UGA as far as it’s going to go. We need new blood…

[...] Jeff Schultz, one of my favorites, poses the question: Bowl or Bust? It’s one thing to ask the question if you’re a Mississippi State or N.C. State or some [...]

I know we need the extra practice, but do we want to be humiliated in a no name bowl. Do we want to go just anywhere or do we want to start getting ready for a better year next year? Before anything happens we need to take care of the coaching situation. Willie if you are truthfully a friend of Coach Richt then do him a favor and step aside before both of you get terminated. Show us that you care and do the right thing.

The SEC has all those bowl tie-ins for a reason. And, yes, historically it is the most competitive conference in the country although I don’t believe that can be said for this season. Why not give the guys an opportunity to go to a bowl game, even if it is a Shreveport? I’ve been to Shreveport, and while I agree there are better venues, a game is a game.

I would like to add that Saint Simons is an embarrassment. And I say that as both a Tech fan and someone who loves Saint Simons Island. If I were a Georgia fan, I would give the program one more year and then start the talk about Richt’s failures as an administrator. There’s no doubt he’s a good guy or that he knows the game but as we all know too well, sometimes that’s just not enough to justify that fat salary.

Richt does not deserve any bowl, nor should he go to one and embarrass himself further—or the University, I might add. He should not be rewarded for an unspeakably dismal coaching effort. At least Bobby Knight, despite what some may think about him, had the pride to refuse his salary one year while at Texas Tech because he did not think his coaching effort that year merited his salary. Can anyone imagine Richt having the same amount of pride and self-respect to do this? Maybe if Richt had a little of the fiber Knight has, the program would not have degenerated to such a disgusting state.

dbc,
Good points. The scary part is that I believe Richt thinks the current staff will get things turned around. I don’t believe he will make any changes during the off season. With that mentality, I think Richt is sealing his own doom.

But so be it, I’m with you, he’s taken us as far as he can. He will never get us to a national championship game, never. Personal fouls, late hits, cheap shots, that’s all acceptable to Richt. Have you ever seen a team where this type of crap is all but condoned by the head coach? You can’t win with this type of a mental approach.

Stupid penalties like Bryan Evans hitting the guy 10 yards out of bounds, that’s the kind of stupid crap that Richt doesn’t do a damn thing about.

Notre Dame will probably go after Brian Kelly. I say let’s get the jump on them and go after Kelly. Anyone who believes Richt/Martinez/Bobo will lead us to a NC is just plain out kidding yourself. It’s time to face reality and change courses.

Next year is going to worse. UGA losses their 3 best Defensive players (Owens, Atkins, and Weston). The QB situation will be even worse; no QB will have any real game experience. Richts’ loyalty to his coaches and players may be good at times. But to me there is a difference between being loyal and stubborn. Mark Richt be loyal to the University that pays you and the fans……….not your friend(s) that are in over their heads………or you might have a lot of free time to be loyal together as you look for a new job.

Yes we do not have Stafford, Moreno, or Massequi, but when we did have them we did NOT win an SEC east, much less the SEC or compete for a national title. Some years are better than others for football teams. Not all teams are going to be amazing every single year. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. I don’t understand how you people can call yourself georgia fans. If your team wins or loses you should still be in support of them. Fair weather fans suck. All ya’ll do is talk crap when your team is doing bad, and good when they are winning. Yes, there are many problems with this year, but if they get invited to a bowl and want to go then the fans should support them. If not, than don’t call yourself a UGA fan. I can’t believe the nerve of the fans to boo your own team when they lose. That is the rudest thing I have ever seen. Why even go to the game because teams need support, not stupid ignorant fans. Try being in their position and losing and than on top of that having people talk so much crap about them and booing them at their game. It is just unbelievable.

UGA has the tie-breakers with Arkansas and Auburn so if they finish with teh same “SEC” records then the Western division teams will go to the Idependence and Liberty bowls

UGA has the tiebreaker with South Carolina and despite the loss Kentucky cannot have as good of an SEC record as UGA so those teams will take up the Papajohns bowl and maybe even the Music City

Ole Miss or LSU will end up in the Capital One Bowl with the other in the Cotton Bowl

That really leave UGA and UT for the Outback and Chick-Fil-A

Normally I would prefer not to further embarrass the Georgia Program by attending such a non-remidial bowl but after listening to Former Coach Jim Donnan and his comments on the positives including getting a head-start on next season and being to better evaluate players returning next season with the increased practice schedule, it might not be such a bad idea after all.

Georgia is a very YOUNG talented team that barring a few bad calls from officials (OSU,LSU) would be in a very different position today if not for some fatal turnovers. These type bad luck seasons don’t last long but do happen from time to time. The DAWGS are still terrific and Joe Cox threw some of the prettiest deep passes I have seen in a while at Georgia. Stafford had a few in 2007 that were similar but the receivers were more wide open on his. Joe, I know you don’t read this crap but thank you for staying around and playing a year of football that I know you are most likely disappointed in. However, know this, there is no one else at UGA right now that could have done it better. Now go out and beat tech and no one will even care about the rest of the season. Go Dawgs!

Given an 80% Spiller is 2 times better than most teams backs I think after the USC game he will just be tired in TAMPA. I could be wrong but I guess we will see.

Compare Richt’s tenure thus far at Georgia and what do you see? Overall, fairly good? Mediocre? The question is,” Are you getting your money’s worth?” Do you enjoy watching other teams play for Championships or at least be in the hunt for them? If you honestly think that Richt can turn it around by hiring one or two “new” coordinators and let him off the hook, then you are going to get what you asked for. This isn’t the type of Georgia that I grew up knowing. Can’t get the job done, then get the heck out of the way and let someone with some intestinal fortitude try it.

TechFan's Read

November 23rd, 2009
1:43 pm

Amazing, simply amazing. The hypocrisy of Tech fan’s crashing in on the UGA blogs, trying to find something to criticize.

You can’t minimize the success UGA has had since Mark Richt tenure. You can’t minimize the success GT is having. You CAN minimize the lack of class and respect you have for each team. We each represent the state of Georgia. It is THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA you are GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOBY. Either side that does not want success for the other does not understand the history and brotherhood of the rivalry.

Tech fan’s, don’t misinterpret the UGA faithful, they are faithful. Just because they walk away at the end of the game, has no reflection on their support. When you are bitter over another teams past success to resort to criticizing over current shortcoming’s, it belittles your teams accomplishments.

A good friend of Bobby Ross here. Georgia will be fine, they need a year or so. Tech will have a set back when new leadership runs the option. It comes and goes in cycles. UGA has been masking it’s problems on the line for a few years, with great finesse players.

Again, it all comes and goes in cycles. Hopefully Tech gets a BCS game and wins. Great for the state of Georgia. UGA gets a bowl bid and gets some playing time for the young players.

Not sure if we can fix what is between the ear’s of classless UGA and Tech fan’s, but I hope some of you can start. But the reality is most classless people can’t be changed, they were not raised properly.

Go UGA, Go Tech.

If UGA plays flawless, UGA 34, Tech 41

If UGA plays as they have all year, UGA 28, Tech 45

Key’s to the game.

UGA: The perimeter option ate UGA up last year. More of a 3-4 defense. Force Tech to run-up the middle. Push out blockers and get into the backfield on the perimeter. If linebackers can penetrate on the perimeter, it will go along way. By the way pup’s, you have to tackle. on offense, UGA needs to give Tech some of it’s own medicine as a shocker, run the ball. If UGA can run at least 4 yards a carry, and have over 200 yards on the ground and take back some of techs TOP it will go along way to help them stay in the game. If UGA limit’s if penalties, turnovers and establish the run. It will be closer than Tech wants it to be.

Georgia Tech: Keep doing what you do. Option left, right and middle. Mix in play action to keep the secondary from cheating-up. Georgia tech will need to stop UGA’s running game, but I believe UGA will stop themselves as they have all season with costly mistakes. Tech must be careful as they are now the top team as Georgia was last year. Nobody is giving UGA a chance, not even their crazy fan’s. It is Tech’s to lose, not UGA’s to win.

Questions from an interested Tech Fan – True things have been tough for UGA this year. However – it seems that a significant part of the UGA problem is the schedule. To be realistic, virtually no one (including UF, Bama, Texas, Penn State, Boise St. …) played as tough a schedule as UGA. Everyone knows that you have to have cream puffs mixed in so you can to heal up and get ready for the big ones. However, UGA played mostly tough teams week after week starting from week 1. It’s not just being in the SEC either – UGA has talent to deal with the SEC. It’s that out of conference UGA played teams that were too tough – leaving no time for healing up and recovery.

So, here’s my questions:
1. Who makes your schedule and when? Shouldn’t they be to blame too?
2. Is there any way to correct this in the future? Even with a good coaching change you could still have a schedule that sets you up for another rough year.

And I don’t want to hear what score your strength of schedule got. Just realistically look at the schedule – it’s too much for ANY team (including UF, Bama, and Texas) who want to have a great end of season record and play for a national title.

Anything but playing Florida State. That was a neat thought about 10 years ago. Iowa State or Connecticut would at least be something we haven’t overdone in the past 15 years. The payout is the same since the conference splits it, so just give UGA an interesting opponent.

I think some fans need to chill. I’m all for Martinez being shown the door since he’s the DC and the defense has stunk the past TWO years. But Richt? Give me a break. Are we really going to turn into some school where if you don’t win 10 games, you fire the coach? Georgia was unlucky to not be in the national title game in 2002 and was really close in 2007 (had Tenn. lost to Kentucky, who knows what the SEC title game holds). Don’t forget that in this time span, Auburn went 13-0 and didn’t get to play for a national title.

Yes, losing to Florida stinks. Getting killed by Tenn. stinks. But Richt is the best man for the job. If he starts going 6-6 three years in a row, then come talk to me. Don’t forget this team was about 30 seconds from topping LSU and has third third-toughest schedule in the nation. Would the team have been any better playing FIU instead of Oklahoma State?

Ludicrous, the name was changed to the “Motor City Meth Bowl” a couple years back.

Go to the bowl. I can’t image that Joe Cox and Co. are happy with the season one bit. We have had one bad year that is for sure. Focusing on the defense for next year is the key. In the SEC you need a stout well prepared ever changing D to base your team on. Even if your offense is down a little a stout D makes up for it.

The discipline thing I say should be a TEAM thing. Make the offender lay back and relax in a recliner while the ENTIRE TEAM runs sprints, stadiums and guts. You think for one minute they will be happy with that guy at the end of practice. You think they will want to keep being his friend after commiting several dumba$$ penalties? I think not. Nothing like peer pressure to make you think before doing something stupid on the field.

It use to be that a bowl game was a reward for a well played season and winning. Now it has become an exercise in corporate advertising and payoffs to schools so they can pay for the expenses of the atheletic program. Teams with records that in the past would have no reason to celebrate are being rewarded for mediocracy and being average.

Has UGA played up to its potential all year? Have they demonstrated that they deserve to be rewarded for a consistently hard and winning effort game in and game out? Does the product deserve to be put on display in a showcase because it is exceptional in its success? I don’t think so.

Any more that I thought that Tech should have gone to some of the bowls they went to in past years. It was ridiculous and their play in some of those “Who Gives A Rip” bowls confirmed they had no business playing after the regular season.

Sometimes a bowl game, particularly one of the lesser bowls, is a slap in the face rather than a reward. When you haven’t played up to your potential, have been beaten by teams that you should have won easily over, and the mistake columns Like penalties and turnovers are well supplied with stats indicating no discipline or poor coaching, why go and showcase your lack of success?

Sure the money is nice to have and the benefits of sightseeing is a novelty for the players, but crap, sometimes it is best to just end the season and get a new piece of paper out and start working on next year.

If the Pups go to a bowl, I hope they play well enough to represent the state of Georgia in a good way rather than have another venture into embarrassment.

I guess if you want to go somewhere, Birmingham would be a short enough trip that if you lost you wouldn’t have far to go to get back to the pen.

Looking back at the season at least we weren’t expected to win anything. Not like last year. But with a new direction on D we will be on our way.

I think playing UCONN would be a great match up. That game Saturday they played against Notre Dame was great. Or FSU. You give Bobby another win.

Have any of you whiners paid any attention to anything in college football other than the ‘Dogs?

How’s Michigan doing this year? Or Oklahoma? Or Florida State? Or Notre Dame? Or Tennessee? Or Southern Cal lately?

When was the last time Georgia had a season like this? Not since Richt has been the head coach.

When was the last time a team lost the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft (a QB at that), one of the 2 or 3 best RBs in the country and a WR who is starting in the pros as a rookie and did not suffer the next season.

The ‘Dogs are mediocre this year. So are a lot of other teams that traditionally rank in the top 10. It happens. Get over it.

Any of you nattering nabobs think this happens to everybody else but not the dear old ‘Dogs. Get a clue. And a life.

The team simply ain’t that good this year. Doesn’t mean the ‘Dogs are not going to be good again next year. Every program has a season like this every once in a while. It’s Georgia’s first under Richt, so you might want to cut him some slack.

The Kentucky game was the first one this season the ‘Dogs should have won but did not. If they had won that game, they’d be 7-4, which is about right considering what they lost and what they returned from last year.

If something like this happens again next season, then you can start in with some legitimate griping. Until that point, give it a rest. Georgia is not known for having the most discerning fans in college football, and blogs like this only accentuate that fact.

As for the much maligned QB — Cox was outstanding for most of the game Saturday night. He threw some beautiful deep balls and took the team down the field for what should have been the tying touchdown late in the game.

But he threw one really bad pass (unfortunstely he does that every game) and was the victim of a really dumb play call by Bobo (the repeat pass to C. King) and a poor decision on his own part to throw it.

It’s not like he’s surrounded by the most talent a Georgia QB has had to work with in recent years. He’s not Stafford. Or Greene. Or even Shockley. But he’s not nearly as bad as most of the team’s genius “fans” think.

He’s just not good enough to lift an otherwise mediocre group on offense to play above its talent level.

Just be glad you’re not a Michigan or a Notre Dame fan.

For the GA Fans who want to somehow state that being a Christian is not consistent with being able to Coach a football team is the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever heard. Just because Mark Richt openly comes out and states his faith and beliefs does not make him a weaker coach, man or person. I didn’t hear the complaints when everthing was peachy in Athens. All I heard about was how great a man he was and the good example he shows for UGA. That my friends has not changed. Mark Richt is a fine person, coach and mentor. You may want to point some fingers at the athletes as well. UGA needs to go to a bowl – even after we drill them this saturday!
– opportunity for young players to get in the extra practice.
– keep UGA’s bowl streak alive
– opportunity to finish a nightmare season with a win – although meaningless as it is.
– money earned in the bowl helps all conference schools.

As bitter as the season has been – UGA needs to suck it up – play the bowl – focus on getting better.

The penalties and turn over situation is in their DNA – this is something that needs to be heavily worked on in the spring and summer.

One last thought – is Coach Paul Johnson awesome or what?
– In his first year – we beat UGA.
– IN year two – GT is established as the better program – top 10 bcs – and UGA is lower sec.

Even Vegas is not too sure…Tech is #7 and 10-1 and UGA is 6-5 BUT Vegas only has Tech as a 6.5 favorite at home

Looks like I have to explain how the line works again. The folks in Vegas don’t play favorites, don’t give a flip about who is the better team, etc.
The betting line is set to try to get 50% of the bets on both sides of the line. That way the bookies are guaranteed a profit.
If more money gets bet on one side than the other, the line moves.

Mark is a super guy, but his day in day out nourishing type personality around this staff and their families have blinded him to the wants and desires of the 90,000 “customers” who pay ALL the bills and ask for and expect a well coached, successful winning team, not perfect, but knowing every game we enter, we have a chance to win or be competitive. We no longer have that, and for those of you who follow this team closely, it started the year bfore, yes even with a better record. It isn’t that we lost it is how we are losing.

We have major coaching issues when we have for top recruit quarterbacks and the one we start randomly chooses to throw the ball to the other team. What happened to fullbacks at UGA? Why are we starting so many freshmen after years of quality recruiting? Turnovers, penalties, absurd play calling. I support CMR UNLESS he doesn’t clean house.

Yes they should take whatever Bowl will have them. As has been said it is for the extra practice time for the younger players. Do they deserve it? No, but then 7-5 teams don’t deserve a bowl either. They ought to drop about 10-12 bowl games so being a Bowl team would mean something again.

Hell No I won’t go and watch watch whichever bowel UGA plays in, we’ve had a dissapointing season but we should not hold up our bowels for the rest of the SEC. Not fair for the rest of the SEC to share their bowels with us and us sitting at home watching.
Playing Fla. A&M would be a good matchup, just getting to play another bowel game should be enough of a blowout for us after the season we’ve had.
Bowels were not created to reward a team for their suckyness, maybe losing 6 games this season is a success for UGA with the current coaches and team we have.
Jeff, don’t count us out as a 6 win team just yet.
Jeff me, you, and Mark at the AJC think Tech will steamroll UGA on Saturday. Most of the TECH boogers think the same,
As bad as UGA’s program has looked at times this season, do you think they won’t show up for this rivalry? They will show up and get their asses handed to them.
This rivalry game against Tech on Saturday will be UGA’s Bowl game, Win or lose, but UGA will show up and be ready to lose. I also think Obama is a great president.

Dan

November 23rd, 2009
3:03 pm

As for the “four extra weeks of practice” notion, sadly, several months of practice under the direction of the existing coaching staff has resulted in major disappointment; why expect differently, unless in the unlikely event of a new defensive/offensive coordinator being on board, introducing the players to some new concepts?

Plus, if Georgia was to face an opponent genuinely excited to be in any bowl, really motivated, there’s a considerable risk of Georgia finishing the season with a 6-7 record. Appropriate, perhaps, but why invite it?

If the players want the trip and the swag, cool; go play, and good luck. But let’s not kid anyone that the extra practice time would really benefit the team all that much for next season.

"Chef" Tim Dix

With a loss to Tech, Richt should allow the players to vote on a bowl appearance. It won’t happen of course due to the money, but I feel if they believe trotting out this lot for minimal cash is demeaning the University should honor the teams wishes.

Dan- completely agree. The LAST thing we need is more practice time with this bunch of coaches. I say forget the bowl invitation, and get on with the business of bringing in new assistants and new game plan. Also when the players show up for spring practice I’d present them with practice gear with no “G-logo” and tell them anyone caught wearing anything with a “G-logo” will be subject to running stadiums. Let them know that they will have to EARN the right to wear the “G”.
When the seaons starts if they aren’t ready then guess what, they get to run out on the field with blank helments and “G-less” pants and jerseys. Maybe then the pride of what it means to be a Dawg will kick in.
Can’t remember exactly when it was, but the Cowboys did this with the “star” making the players earn the right to wear it.

But of course he won’t – just like he says he won’t tolerate penalities (after saying a couple months ago that it doesn’t bother him) but yet still allows the player to play – like Evans after that late hit out-of-bounds – Evans was still in there.

We’re in the bowl alright, consider the game against Tech the bowl. If that one somehow ends up in the “W” column, which isn’t likely, then extend the season with an extra game somewhere. Otherwise skip the bowl because the record will speak for itself.

It has become fashionable for everyone to get a trophy, winners and losers, so that no one will get their feelings hurt. I guess they’ve extended this to the collegiate level in the form of bowl games that host teams with break even or slightly better records.

Premature question at best. If you’re UGA you’d better be focused on beating Tech. Lose that game and it won’t really matter what bowl you go to (and you don’t turn a bowl invitation down to stay at home – that makes the school and the conference look really bad), you won’t enjoy it. Same applies to Tech – if it doesn’t beat UGA, it’s all downhill from there. Go Jackets!

UGA may beat Tech because anything can happen in football game, just ask Kentucky. I don’t think it will happen. Who would have thought that UGA would not win that one. Certainly you dawgies felt that was a given. Leading 20-6 at the half. Just can’t close it out. Look out Kentucky just scored again. Name calling is all you have now and you are good at that. Georgia is more popular at 6-5 than tech is at 10-1. Why cause we run a real offense, have way more fans, more exposure, more money, better players, could go on and on. My comments are so buried, only the IT people might read them, but here goes. As embarassing as this season and going to a bottom-bottom tier bowl is, it will afford the Dogs the opportunity to start practicing for next season. Joe Cox can go home to Charlotte and learn his colors (so as not to throw to opposing team jerseys) while the future contenders begin to jockey for the starting QB position. That’s the benefit of going to a bowl, even if you don’t deserve to go.

Georgia will always get recruits, so stop worrying about that program as far as that goes. UGA has the pick of the litter because most of those kids still cannot get into Tech nor want to go there is the first place. I really see Georgia beating Tech Saturday. They have two super stars back and they are so humble now they might play a little football without running their mouths. I think meanwhile if they don’t beat us this year they will beat us again with Richt, too good not to. When Gailey was at Tech that was not a fact to be said about Tech and Georgia Tech was not that good back then. Tech’s playing better will make Georgia play better because they grew up with these guys just like Auburn guys and have some pride. It is when they can play a mediocre Kentucky and beat them steady that is when they are going to be something and they will eventually get that back too. That may take a new coordinator that respects what he sees not what he hears. Believe me if Georgia beats Tech Saturday it won’t be because Tech counted their chickens too early it will be because Georgia is just better which they have all the talent to be.

To all you UGA ” fair weather fans”: As a die-hard GT fan for decades (whether we lost 5,6 or even 9 games), I still was a fan and bought season tickets also making a contribution to the athletic program. I would be ashamed of some of the posts here involving firing everybody from the offensive and defensive coordinators to the head coach and athletic director along with withholding contributions and not buying tickets.. All of this over one bad season by GT standards, and the season isn’t even over yet. This just cements why I look down UGA fans that feel that way. Maybe they never set foot inside the university. I hope they did not and will vanish so I can take a different view of the UGA fan base. Right now these people look like wimps – they are soft and could never measure up as a real college football fan. Look at what the jackets have gone through losing to UGA. You have lost in 2008 and you would think the world was coming to an end. Another couple of seasons like this, and you won’t need a 90,000 seat stadium. To the real UGA fans – mostly ones that went to the school- you should be happy to get rid of this type of trashy fan even if it costs you some money. They are probably the ones that were leaving the stadium with two minutes and three time-outs to go when you had a chance to win the Kentucky game.

At this point, I am hoping for the Liberty Bowl because at least Memphis would be a fun destination with Beale Street and a top-notch music scene. Eating some amazing BBQ and listening to some Blues would at least be a fun way to lament our season of blues. As an aged UGA alumnus, I am embarrassed at the attitude in which players representing UGA are allowed to continue displaying on the field. If the DAWGS win or lose, I’m willing to accept, but I really would like to minimize the exposure of these thugs. Change the coaches, refuse the bowl and send a signal that the University of Georgia does not accept what these coaches and players represent.

UGA’s fixing to fall?
But speaking just for me
and some people from AJC,
we got a thing or two to tell you all.
This Dawg may have stumbled
but he ain’t never fell.
And if the Techies don’t believe that
they can all go straight to hell.
We’re gonna put UGA’s feet
on the path of a Winning streak
and then God bless UGA nation again.

And you never did think that it ever would happen again.
In Georgia, did you?
You never did think that we’d ever get together again.
Well we damn sure fooled you.
We’re walking real proud and we’re talking real loud again
In UGA Nation.
You never did think that it ever would happen again.
NOW WE MAY HAVE DONE A LITTLE BIT OF FIGHTING AMONGST OURSELVES,
BUT YOU OUTSIDE PEOPLE BEST LEAVE US ALONE.
Cause we’ll all stick together
and you can take that to the bank.
That’s the Gators and the Jackets and the rebels and the yanks.
You just go and lay your hand on a Georgia BULLDAWG fan
and I think you’re gonna finally understand.

And you never did think that it ever would happen again.
In Georgia, did you?
You never did think that we’d ever get together again.

You go to the bowl to get more practices and time with the players. Coaching changes would not likely happen before the end of the season for other teams anyway, so there is no downside to going to the bowl. If we are a 6-6 team, then not going to a bowl is not going to disguise it or fool anyone. Fact is, it might wake up the team to realize they have to leave it all on the field every Saturday, and they might as well leave a few coaches in Shreveport while they are there.

Not accepting and going to a bowl game is like not taking a Christmas Bonus check. It’s free money and free tv time. I remember the days before ESPN, ESPN2, 3, 4, etc., when you had to be at least 7-4 or 8-3 just to get in any bowl. The problem is with the whole college football “postseason” no playoff system. If we had one, 6-6 might be good enough to get you in the 1st round, but chances are you would lose and be eliminated, then again, who knows. But turn down free tv money? No way, Jose!

Yes on any bowl. The extra practice will be great for 2010. They really have no choice as the SEC has bowl tie in agreements for so many teams so unless there was a situation like SC and Clemson a few years ago when there was a season ending brawl I believe the school has to accept if offered.

Okay, all kidding aside, it IS humbling to go through a season like this – Tenn. fans have had to ride out the low of losing to WYOMING and VANDY during the end of “Full Filmer” and this year’s roller coaster ride with “Lame Kitten” (I confess I likethat one.)

Strangely the Vols still haven’t lost to Kentucky, although this might be their year. I really kept thinking “Ok , Georgia is about to… ” just as Cox threw that INT. I was pretty sure y’all dawgs were gonna win (and same with LSU – what was THAT all about??) but seems we’re all around the same point. They should turn down any bowl bid. This is not a good team and this “extra practice” crap is just that — crap. We aren’t going to get to see key players get any “practice” time anyway. And what difference would it make if we did — can Martinez or Boobo coach them to play in a bowl? Don’t make me laugh with a “yes” answer.

I wonder how many dawg fans will truly spend money to travel and watch this team get steam rolled by their opponent? You will have to be a die hard to waste your money for that trip to wherever it is. But go on, put out your money to show support for this coaching staff. They are banking on you doing it. Old Dawg has it right. We are going to a bowl ONLY because it allows a team to get three extra weeks of practice. The NCAA should allow any team to practice those weeks. But…we are ENTITLED to go to a bowl. That’s what is wrong with this country, ENTITLEMENTS, but for another day.

If we were going to New Orleans, Orlando, Tampa, etc. it would be a reward for the players. Some idiot on another blog thinks missing Christmas with their families, being stuck in a hotel room in Shreveport, and playing on Dec. 28 is a reward for the players. I have made that trip with the team years ago; believe me it was not a reward and all they wanted to do was play the game, get the hell out of Shreveport, go home, and celebrate a late Christmas.

Lot of bad BS on these blogs by both UGA and GT fans, but some classy posts by some GT fans, especially GT53 on another blog.

I think the real reason there is so much anger on the part of UGA fans is because most realistic fans knew that CWM should have been gone after last year. We have had to put up with it at least a year longer than any reasonable person should have to. Also, the penalties are just as defeating as last year. Last year it was the injuries(everyone had them), and this year its all the young players (why do we have to play young inexperienced players if they are not ready? If they are ready as they are at other institutions, then we have no excuse).

The kickoffs were a hot topic last year and seem to get worse with every game this year. Just look at the results against KY. We never touch their man until he gets to the 30 yard line, yet we are hit at the 10-12 yard line. Folks, that’s not that complicated. It takes fire and passion to do the job. BTW, think that’s whats missing.

Offensive play calling? 2nd down and 1 yard for a first down at the 2 yard line! We have just gained 9 yards running. What would you call from the 2 yard line with 3 chances for a first down? Yeah, a bootleg tricky play for a pass! Kidding me? Just like with the game on the line late in the game. What happened to a full backfield and a dive to the fullback. If we don’t have a 250 lb runner that can score, put the defensive tackle in to block and get it in. Laugh at Saban if you will, but it works!

We have too much talent to be rebuilding, we should be reloading. Don’t give me this crap about Stafford and Moreno leaving early. They did not play defense last year either. Players are talented, give good effort, but don’t have enough coaching. We have skill people to compare with anyone in the country, but maybe we need a few more of those wide bodies with huge hearts.

Not Disappointed!

Any bowl can be positive for the next year. Positive for the underclass.

Don’t give in just yet to those other crap bowls, hold out for the Jiffylube Bowl. They will be offering a special for UGA fans that want to attend and watch the game. Half price oil change for your car and a free rectum greasing. Your car will run better and your butt will not be as sore after UGA loses to some bottom feeder. That’s a better deal that a free pizza.

No matter what we think, you have to go to a bowl for the extra practice time. It’s a no brainer! These lower bowls are about next year for a team like ours this year. Develop the players for next year so we don’t have to live though another year like this anytime soon.

I went to watch UGA play Arkansas at the Independence Bowl several years ago. No it’s not the Sugar Bowl but the people of Shreveport were very hospitable and treated the team and the fans very well. Ever since then I have been irritated every time I hear the UGA fans and the Atlanta sports media bad mouth Shreveport like it’s some kind of punishment to have to go there. Well, this year I hope we’re not invited to the Independence Bowl because we don’t deserve to go.

Get used to it puppy fans. Looking ahead at the 2010 schedule, I see 3 sure wins – some Louisiana school, Vandy, and the big, big game against Idaho St. Swing games are Auburn, Kentucky, Colorado, and S.Carolina. SURE LOSSES – Arkansas, Missy St., Tennessee, Florida, and the 3d beatdown in a row by that bunch from the North Avenue Trade School. I included Missy St, as a sure loss, because they WILL be the most improved team in the SEC in 2010.

I will travel to Birmingham, which is at least an acceptable city. Shreveport is just a terrible place to take a vacation. I would prefer papa.com or nothing to Shreveport.

dougdawg,

You ask how long would Vince have put up with this. The answer is pretty clear. He “put up” with Coach Goff for seven years and with Coach Donnan for five years. One bad season under Coach Richt does not begin to compare. While I think seven years was too long for Coach Goff, you would have to be a complete idiot to fire Coach Richt for one bad season. Your answer: Coach Dooley would not be giving the first thought to firing Coach Richt.

I am not interested in a bowl but the practices are good especially for the young pups and especially for the QBs (and especially since we’ll be starting a new one).

To borrow a phrase from former coach Pat Dye-

GEORGIA IS NOT MAN ENOUGH to beat Georgia Tech this year.

and

THE DOG NATION FANS are not man enough to sit through an entire azz whoopin.

Please use the trash receptacles that we have provided for you and support your team until the final buzzer. And STFU when walking back to your truck!

They’ll be going to the “crappy mid-tier SEC team who still managed to beat the ‘best’ team in the ACC” bowl.

Suck it, nerds.

All Dawgs fans are not fair weather fans. Take the Bowl offered and let our seniors enjoy and our younger players get experience.
