I listened to Mark Richt’s teleconference with media members Sunday night and had to chuckle (quietly) when somebody asked the Georgia coach about the bowl picture. “I’m not sure where [we're going],” Richt said, “but I can promise you we will be thankful anywhere we get to go.”
It wasn’t just what he said but the way he said it, as in: “We’ll take anything.”
A question for you: Would you prefer anything or nothing? Because the “anything” is not going to be very good.
The SEC bowl tie-ins are: 1.) BCS bowl(s); 2.) Capital One; 3.) Outback; 4.) Chick-fil-A; 5.) Cotton; 6 and 7.) Liberty and Music City; 8.) Independence; 9.) Papajohns.com.
It’s looking more and more like Georgia is ticketed for one of the bottom two bowls, either the Independence in Shreveport, La., Dec. 28, or the Papajohns.com in Birmingham, Dec. 29. ESPN.com projections have them playing Connecticut (Papajohns.com) or Iowa State (Independence). CBSSports.com has Georgia playing Florida State in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Dec. 27.
If the Dogs lose to Georgia Tech, they will finish the regular season 6-6 (one of those wins coming over Tennessee Tech). Would you look forward to one of the lower-tier bowls, or has the season left you too upset to even want to watch or attend?

Have any of you whiners paid any attention to anything in college football other than the ‘Dogs?
How’s Michigan doing this year? Or Oklahoma? Or Florida State? Or Notre Dame? Or Tennessee? Or Southern Cal lately?
When was the last time Georgia had a season like this? Not since Richt has been the head coach.
When was the last time a team lost the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft (a QB at that), one of the 2 or 3 best RBs in the country and a WR who is starting in the pros as a rookie and did not suffer the next season.
The ‘Dogs are mediocre this year. So are a lot of other teams that traditionally rank in the top 10. It happens. Get over it.
Any of you nattering nabobs think this happens to everybody else but not the dear old ‘Dogs. Get a clue. And a life.
The team simply ain’t that good this year. Doesn’t mean the ‘Dogs are not going to be good again next year. Every program has a season like this every once in a while. It’s Georgia’s first under Richt, so you might want to cut him some slack.
The Kentucky game was the first one this season the ‘Dogs should have won but did not. If they had won that game, they’d be 7-4, which is about right considering what they lost and what they returned from last year.
If something like this happens again next season, then you can start in with some legitimate griping. Until that point, give it a rest. Georgia is not known for having the most discerning fans in college football, and blogs like this only accentuate that fact.
As for the much maligned QB — Cox was outstanding for most of the game Saturday night. He threw some beautiful deep balls and took the team down the field for what should have been the tying touchdown late in the game.
But he threw one really bad pass (unfortunstely he does that every game) and was the victim of a really dumb play call by Bobo (the repeat pass to C. King) and a poor decision on his own part to throw it.
It’s not like he’s surrounded by the most talent a Georgia QB has had to work with in recent years. He’s not Stafford. Or Greene. Or even Shockley. But he’s not nearly as bad as most of the team’s genius “fans” think.
He’s just not good enough to lift an otherwise mediocre group on offense to play above its talent level.
Just be glad you’re not a Michigan or a Notre Dame fan.

I encourage all UGA Dawg fans to bombard the Georgia Southern AD with calls, emails, letters, gift baskets and tweets to hire Willie Martinez, our amazing defensive coordinator, as their next head coach. Willie Martinez should be considered the ONLY choice for their head coach.
Please, I urge you get on the Willie Martinez wagon to be the next Head Coach for Georgia Southern!!!
Surely, Mark Richt would not ask Willie to stay at UGA if he were offered the GA So. job…..
Should Georgia Southern should choose to go another direction and not hire Willie as their coach: Please call your local Bingo Hall and recommend him as their next numbers caller…

If the Dawgs are invited to a bowl, they should go. As long as the rules reward 6 win teams then you should go. The bowls are for the players and the Seniors should get to go and make the best of it. Most bowls make sure the kids enjoy it. If I can go I will be right there and go Dawgs!! Keep hanging in there Chance Veazey!

I can’t believe I’m writing this. For the GA Fans who want to somehow state that being a Christian is not consistent with being able to Coach a football team is the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever heard. Just because Mark Richt openly comes out and states his faith and beliefs does not make him a weaker coach, man or person. I didn’t hear the complaints when everthing was peachy in Athens. All I heard about was how great a man he was and the good example he shows for UGA. That my friends has not changed. Mark Richt is a fine person, coach and mentor. You may want to point some fingers at the athletes as well. But for the lunatic fringe who somehow thinks Mark Richt’s person spiritual beliefs are part of the problem you may want to look in the mirror. You are part of the problem my friend.

Turn the bowl down you know we don’t deserve to be there Maybe next year will be better IF some changes are made and some discipline installed. Otherwise we will be looking to Shreveport every year . Coach its time to get down to business, and NCAA NOW IS A BIG BUSINESS. I hate it but college football is no longer a sport bit a big buck business

6-7 is a possibility, that is unacceptable with all the talent on the UGA team. Or maybe they aren’t as talented as we thought? Down year or not that is embarrasing.

I hate to say this but: Joe Cox is our Reggie Ball.
He genuinely must be the least physically impressive starting QB in all of Division I football. I hate to crap on the guy, but this is big boy college sports and he simply cannot consistently get the job done. All we heard about him was how much of a Leader he is to the team. He is definitely a Leader: As in Leading the SEC in Turnovers.

UGA needs to go to a bowl – even after we drill them this saturday!
– opportunity for young players to get in the extra practice.
– keep UGA’s bowl streak alive
– opportunity to finish a nightmare season with a win – although meaningless as it is.
– money earned in the bowl helps all conference schools.
As bitter as the season has been – UGA needs to suck it up – play the bowl – focus on getting better.
The penalties and turn over situation is in their DNA – this is something that needs to be heavily worked on in the spring and summer.
One last thought – is Coach Paul Johnson awesome or what?
– In his first year – we beat UGA.
– IN year two – GT is established as the better program – top 10 bcs – and UGA is lower sec.

All of you Techies assuming a WIN on Saturday are going to look silly if the Dawgs throw the ball up and down the field on you….
Even Vegas is not too sure…Tech is #7 and 10-1 and UGA is 6-5 BUT Vegas only has Tech as a 6.5 favorite at home
Looks like I have to explain how the line works again. The folks in Vegas don’t play favorites, don’t give a flip about who is the better team, etc.
The betting line is set to try to get 50% of the bets on both sides of the line. That way the bookies are guaranteed a profit.
If more money gets bet on one side than the other, the line moves.

With the bowl tie-ins like they are, would Georgia even have a choice of going to a nothing bowl or staying home? I think that Tech would like to have stayed home rather than go to the Humanitarian Bowl and the Emerald Nut Bowl. Both were disastrous.

I hate to have Bobo and Martinez and crew work with these kids at all. Anybody like their body of work this year. Yeas, we need 15 or so “free” practices, but not with these clowns….. We go to a bowl, these guys stay on staff till year end, but i guess ALL GOOD COACH’S will be on staff somewhere till year end. Mark is a super guy, but his day in day out nourishing type personality around this staff and their families have blinded him to the wants and desires of the 90,000 “customers” who pay ALL the bills and ask for and expect a well coached, successful winning team, not perfect, but knowing every game we enter, we have a chance to win or be competitive. We no longer have that, and for those of you who follow this team closely, it started the year bfore, yes even with a better record. Anybody remember the Vandy game that year and we only win because they fumble.

Our bowl game IS this Saturday vs. GA Tech. So clipboards, get your (xxx) together! No more pathetic pooch kicks or horrid play calling if you were somehow to get a lead. If I were CMR which I’m not, everyone of you would be seeking employment after this pathetic and wasteful season. A minus 18 turnover margin! The fact that we have recovered 1 fumble all season! Are you serious?? That is crap you hear out of teams like Bowling Green or SMU.

WTF with all the UGA fan bashing??? How exactly are we supposed to react to our team handing games over to the opponent? I will say it again. When the seats are empty and the blogs go silent, THAT is when you can bash the UGA faithful. Those that put forward their hard earned dollars have the right to expect more. It isn’t that we lost it is how we are losing.
We have major coaching issues when we have for top recruit quarterbacks and the one we start randomly chooses to throw the ball to the other team. What happened to fullbacks at UGA? Why are we starting so many freshmen after years of quality recruiting? Turnovers, penalties, absurd play calling. I support CMR UNLESS he doesn’t clean house.
I am thankful for the UGA fans that do care and haven’t given up and become complacent. We bitch because we care. Now…fire some damn people who haven’t done their job.

For the ones of you who suggest we need the practice, I whole season of practice hasn’t helped. It takes coaching and we don’t have any. We won’t have any next year. Unfortunately we won’t do what needs to be done until nexy year. Fire Richt and start over. The man has no interest and no fire. There is not a creative bone in him. Look at SEC coaching, we have the twelth best coach in the league. Must be nice to have a job making 3 mil a year and not feel you have to do anything.

Yes they should take whatever Bowl will have them. As has been said it is for the extra practice time for the younger players. Do they deserve it? No, but then 7-5 teams don’t deserve a bowl either. They ought to drop about 10-12 bowl games so being a Bowl team would mean something again.

Hell No I won’t go and watch watch whichever bowel UGA plays in, we’ve had a dissapointing season but we should not hold up our bowels for the rest of the SEC. Not fair for the rest of the SEC to share their bowels with us and us sitting at home watching.
Playing Fla. A&M would be a good matchup, just getting to play another bowel game should be enough of a blowout for us after the season we’ve had.
Bowels were not created to reward a team for their suckyness, maybe losing 6 games this season is a success for UGA with the current coaches and team we have.
Jeff, don’t count us out as a 6 win team just yet.
Jeff me, you, and Mark at the AJC think Tech will steamroll UGA on Saturday. Most of the TECH boogers think the same,
As bad as UGA’s program has looked at times this season, do you think they won’t show up for this rivalry? They will show up and get their asses handed to them.
This rivalry game against Tech on Saturday will be UGA’s Bowl game, Win or lose, but UGA will show up and be ready to lose. I also think Obama is a great president.
Who’s got the game this week Jeff? YOU or Bradley?

As for the “four extra weeks of practice” notion, sadly, several months of practice under the direction of the existing coaching staff has resulted in major disappointment; why expect differently, unless in the unlikely event of a new defensive/offensive coordinator being on board, introducing the players to some new concepts?
Plus, if Georgia was to face an opponent genuinely excited to be in any bowl, really motivated, there’s a considerable risk of Georgia finishing the season with a 6-7 record. Appropriate, perhaps, but why invite it?
If the players want the trip and the swag, cool; go play, and good luck. But let’s not kid anyone that the extra practice time would really benefit the team all that much for next season.

With a loss to Tech, Richt should allow the players to vote on a bowl appearance. It won’t happen of course due to the money, but I feel if they believe trotting out this lot for minimal cash is demeaning the University should honor the teams wishes.

At this point I don’t care what bowl we go to. The important thing about going to a bowl is getting the extra practices. Hopefully we can use them to implement the schemes of our new DC & his staff! While we’re at it we can let our new Special Team Coordinator start fixing that mess! I love CMR but if he won’t make the necessary changes then he needs to be changed!!! If it’s going to go that way then fine lets’s get it done & go get Brain Kelley before ND does!

Dan- completely agree. The LAST thing we need is more practice time with this bunch of coaches. I say forget the bowl invitation, and get on with the business of bringing in new assistants and new game plan. Also when the players show up for spring practice I’d present them with practice gear with no “G-logo” and tell them anyone caught wearing anything with a “G-logo” will be subject to running stadiums. Let them know that they will have to EARN the right to wear the “G”.
When the seaons starts if they aren’t ready then guess what, they get to run out on the field with blank helments and “G-less” pants and jerseys. Maybe then the pride of what it means to be a Dawg will kick in.
Can’t remember exactly when it was, but the Cowboys did this with the “star” making the players earn the right to wear it.
Maybe a little humbling is what they need.
