Any chance Willie Martinez comes up with a game plan to upset Tech?
In 2006, when a 7-4 and unranked Georgia team defeated a 9-2 and 16th ranked Georgia Tech team, it wasn’t difficult to figure out why. The Dogs’ defense rattled Reggie Ball, the oft-rattled quarterback, who went 6-for-22 with two interceptions and a fumble.
“That was our goal from Day 1,” defensive tackle Ray Gant said afterward. “As soon as we started game-planning Tech, shake Reggie.”
The biggest reason not to expect an upset next Saturday when Georgia goes to North Ave? The Dogs’ defense seldom rattles anybody any more.
If this is another indictment of defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, so be it. We watched Kentucky score four second-half touchdowns Saturday night, and even though two of those scores were set up by turnovers, the game illustrated Georgia’s lack of ability to make a play when it matters.
Question: Do you see Martinez putting together a game plan and inspiring a defense to the point that the Dogs can either: 1) rattle Jackets quarterback Josh Nesbitt into making mistakes, or, 2) slow an offense that is among the nation’s per-game leaders in yardage (449.6) and points (36)? I don’t.
Here’s a stat for you: If you throw out the Vanderbilt and Tennessee Tech games, Georgia has allowed an average of 31.4 points in its other nine games. Martinez might want to keep that off his resume.
Can Georgia put up points against Tech? Yes. But as much as the Jackets’ defense has struggled this season, it also has shown an ability to make adjustments and make plays when it has had to. (Another stat: The Jackets have allowed only one second-half touchdown in the last four games). The Dogs probably had a better defense a year ago, when Tech torched them for 409 rushing yards and five offensive TDs.
I suppose there’s something to be said for this being a rivalry game and Georgia players wanting to finish the season (pre-bowl) on a high note. But it’s hard to imagine any breakthrough coming now.

It’s over, it’s done, 6-6 for 2009. Hope we don’t go to a bowl. Almost last in the nation in turnovers and penalties. Beaten by a very average Kentucky. Joe Cox has to be the worst BCS quarterback in the nation. Willie’s D strikes again … over 30 points. Drew Butler laughing and joking on the sidelines after a major brain failure. Mark Richt looking like he had no clue of what was going on. For the first time ever I’m a little angry at Mark Richt for allowing the Georgia Football Program to sink so low. CMR wanted Willie and Bobo and now he’s had them. Chances are he’ll want them for another year. If it happens CMR will be putting his job on the line. The Bulldog Nation is fed up with what CMR has provided the last half of last year and this year. He’s got to pull the trigger … Willie, Bobo, Janek and any other coach who can’t cut it needs their pink slip. I would have loved to have seen CMR in Coach Willie’s face and Joe Cox’s face giving them the whereall about what’s expected when you put on Red and Black. Never been so sicked and disgusted with any Georgia team like this team.

Z I saw that, becuase I was watching, and I never give up on UGA. It was indeed a pitiful display. That is unusual for UGA fans, quite disappointing, but the results on the field were even more disappointing. UGA has a very young team this year, and I believe that they will be quite a bit better next year. Just watching the results from the Cleve, Detroit, Denver, games today, you can see how much of the UGA offense was lost.

Absolutely no chance. Beating these guys take discipline & sure tackling. We are incapable of both. Their center and guards will humiliate Weston, Owens and Atkins. If by some chance its close then becomes a chess match? Martinez will loose. He simply does not understand the game.

For what it’s worth Denver Dog, I went to school an hour away from you, at the United States Air Force Academy in 1972. After a tour in the Air Force flying F-15’s in Bitburg W. Germany (33rd Tactical Fighter Wing) I returned to my home in Atlanta and finished my MS in Aerospace Engineering. I went to work for NASA for 12 years then earned an MBA from Wharton School of Business. I’m a consultant in Buckhead now. As I said in my last post — good luck to you, and no hard feelings.

Ga players don’t have a Coach who is a disciplinary figure. When the team is playing like sh*t and there is a player dancing facing the crowd, that shows a major problem with discipline. Ex players have stated they played hard for Van Gorder because they were affraid of him. When looking for a defensive coordinator Coach Richt needs to keep that in mind. It’s call motivation and respect, like having a drill sergeant.

Ever heard of Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Frank Beamer, Mack Brown, Jim Tressel, Steve Spurrier??? and that’s just off the top of my head.
You can argue that Bobby Bowden is not an active coach but I’m pretty sure the others are still coaching – a few of them even have won national champioships

HairyDawg makes a good study.
I wonder why he keeps remarking that Richt is a Chistian. Surely, Jesus did not come to the rescue during the loss to KY last night. He didn’t show up in Athens last year, either.
As I understand it, although living by Chistian virtues in the world may result in earthly rewards, Jesus really kicks in once you are dead.
Are you really implying that you believe that the Dawgs are dead and in need of Jesus’ redemption?

Richt picked up at Georgia right where he left off–becoming the 4th most winning active coach in the NCAA from 2001-2008.
When Richt left, FSU dropped off the map, wonder why genius?

USC, Oklahoma and UGA are down this year. The common thread? All lost great QB’s from last year. Without a great QB, teams rarely play at an elite level in this day and age. If Murray stays healthy, watch out – he can be a Sam Bradford type in 2011

let’s see, Ga Tech needed a 26-0 quarter in the 3rd quarter to beat us last year, they LOST every other quarter, and then EVEN with that, they only won by 3 points? Wow, what an AMAZING team! Chances of that happening again? About as high as the chances of Ga Tech throwing for 12 touchdowns or completing more than 50% of their passes.

There is no way we can stay on the field with Tech, as bad as that hurts to say. We looked absolutely pathetic last night in the 2nd half. With that being said, the silver lining in all of this is we will get some change and even if we actually do somehow win this weekend everything is already set in motion. Garner is the first one gone and Willie is right behind him. And folks, don’t be surprised if/when we lose Saturday if Richt isn’t gone as well. Evans is a smart and proud man and there is no way he allows this program to slip back into the Ray Goff ways again.

Excuse the delusional Vol fans on this website. We have zero depth and lose a ton of seniors this year. It will take a couple of more classes to build up what we lost when Kiffin arrived (14 players) and the poor classes Fulmer’s last two years. We will struggle to win 4-5 games next year. It will be 2011 before UT is consistantly competitive. Just being real. Go Vols!

Godogs…with all those corner blitzes…..who’s taking the pitchman? Also, we still keep two WR’s spread (line to line). Better not let CPJ find out. He’s got handfuls of plays to counter the blitzes. I have seen the “Dwyer draw” in just about every game that goes for 20+(many of those on third and long with a blitz). When playing against Tech’s O, all out blitzes mean mis-assignments. I would love to see uga do it, but even Willie’s smarter than that.

Even though it is popular to say “you can throw out the schedules and records” for rivalry games such as Tech-UGA, this particular series has seen very, very few true upsets. UGA is certainly talented enough to beat Tech this year, but it seems their collective heart really isn’t in it. Then again, with nothing to lose and the chance to pull something (albeit small) positive out of this season, UGA has a chance. Tech, cming off a rare bye week before the game, seems primed for an upset.

Nobody’s going to fire Richt, and he probably won’t fire Martinez. After a decade of success (but no NC), Richt probably needs to shake things up a little….especially in managing the discipline (penalties, off-field incidents, sideline antics) and image of the team. Paul Johnson’s star is still rising, and if his “working class warriors” approach holds true, Tech will be ready for the challenge.
