Georgia loses to Kentucky, and the song stays the same

This is the picture? Do need to know more? Joe Cox had this fourth-quarter pass intercepted by Kentucky's Shane McCord, which set up one of the Wildcats four second-half touchdowns in a 34-27 upset.

This is the picture? Do you really need to know more? An interception by Kentucky's Shane McCord of a Joe Cox pass set up the Wildcats' winning touchdown in a 34-27 upset of the Dogs.

ATHENS — They got bruised in Stillwater, blindsided in Knoxville and humbled in Jacksonville. Also, their dog died.

Nobody intended for Georgia’s season to unfold like a country-western song. It just sort of  turned out that way.

So what were the objectives Saturday night? Easy. To create a memory for seniors who were playing their final game in Sanford Stadium. To diminish chances of the season ending in Shreveport. To look convincing enough in a win over Kentucky — whose 6-4 record entering the night mirrored Georgia’s — that the Bulldogs’ somewhat jaded fan base would start salivating over a possible upset next week on North Ave.

They whiffed.

With representatives from the Independence and Liberty Bowls in attendance, the  Bulldogs held a 20-6 halftime lead over Kentucky, then unraveled like they have far too often. They committed four second-half turnovers. The Wildcats scored four touchdowns. Georgia went down, 34-27, in its final home game of the season, and it’s just as well because there probably are not a lot of folks around Athens who wanted to be subjected to another game this season, anyway.

Mark Richt is going to have a chore trying to keep his players pumped up after this one.

Mark Richt is going to have a chore trying to keep his players pumped up after this one.

Most fans in the students section wore black. At this point, we can’t be certain if they were mourning the sudden loss of Uga VII, or the passing of significant bowl game hopes.

The Dogs just lost a home game to Kentucky for the first time in 32 years. Their record is now 6-5. It’s the most losses ever for a Mark Richt team. They would need to upset Georgia Tech and win whatever low-grade bowl game that takes them just to match Richt’s all-time low win total at Georgia in 2001 (final record: 8-4).

By any measure, it has been a dreadful season.

This won’t make things any easier for Richt. He has been fielding questions about the future of the program and what changes he might make, both in direction and his coaching staff. All this has been going with games still left in the season. Richt has been trying to lay out some tangible goals for his players –one of them was to close the season with five straight wins, which would have led to a respectable final record of 9-4.

Last week, the Dogs responded with a win over Auburn in possibly the team’s best performance of the year. But this was one of their worst — at least the second half was.

It looked like it might be an easy night. Four straight scoring possessions (two touchdowns, two field goals) to close the first half  gave the Bulldogs a 20-6 lead. But if you throw out the Tennessee Tech game, do you know how many easy games this team has had this season? Zero. What could not have been predictable was a complete collapse.

It started when Branden Smith fumbled the second-half kickoff return. That set up one Kentucky touchdown. Joe Cox connected with Rantavious Wooten for a 43-yard touchdown to restore the Dogs’ 14-point lead at 27-13. But no lead has been safe with Georgia’s defense, not even against pedestrian teams like Kentucky. It’s why defensive coordinator Willie Martinez may have coached his final game in Athens, at least as the defensive coordinator.

The defense did nothing to help secure Martinez’s future. Late in the third quarter, the Wildcats closed to 27-20 when quarterback Morgan Newton hit La’Rod King for a 21-yard score. Early in the fourth, tailback Derrick Locke got behind the defense down the left sideline, snared a pass from Newton and blasted off for a 60-yard touchdown, tying the game.

Instead of responding with a score, Georgia responded with a meltdown. On the ensuing drive, Cox threw a pass over the middle right to defensive tackle Shane McCord. That set up the Cats at the Dogs’ 8-yard-line and led to Randall Cobb’s second TD of the game and a 34-27 Kentucky lead.

The meltdown was soon complete: While driving for a would-be tying score, Washaun Ealey fumbled a pitch at Kentucky’s one-yard line with 2:21 left. Another possession ended with an inteception. Checkmate.

This was not how Georgia expected its final home game to go. But it also didn’t expect the losses to Oklahoma State and Tennessee and so many other messes this season. The song never changed.

I’m a little late to the party with this post, Schultzie, but here it is…

Although I predicted a Wildcat victory last week in Bradley’s space, I never saw this coming… particularly after the Auburn game last week. Penalties, turnovers, and an embarrassing lack of mental discipline in the second half… there really is no other explanation for it. I am a Tech grad, but this one was embarrassing for anyone from the State of Georgia to watch. CMR lost this team several weeks ago… it is time for him to step up and take responsibility for this season. The last time Kentucky won in Athens, I was 12 years old and attending my first college football game between the hedges… nothing against Rich Brooks and the ‘Cats, but the Dawgs simply gave this one away last night. UGA VII deserved better…

Bottom line for CPJ and the Jackets next Saturday: We will need to be very, very careful with this team next Saturday. They are playing for pride now. This year, unlike so many other years in recent memory, the Dawgs – rather than the Jackets – will be forced to treat our game like a bowl game. Patience, discipline, and hard work on both sides of the ball will give the Jackets the win, but not before the Dawgs take an early lead as they ride a season full of frustration onto the field in the first quarter. We need to absorb whatever they throw at us in the first half, maintain our composure, run our offense, and watch knowingly as they slowly self-destruct under the combined weight of dumb personal fouls and our relentless rushing attack. Our house, and our time this season Bulldog nation…

Go Jackets!!

Glass not nearly full, but....

Hey guys,
If it wasn’t for the injuries we would have won some of those games. Then look at the bad calls and our record could be very good. We’ve just gotten some bad breaks this year. This coaching staff is doing a great job and we’ll be better in the future. We are developing men and teaching them that winning is not everything. The loss to KY was a life lesson and I like how we took it without showing anger or passion. Even our more “aggressive” players are beginning to calm down and adher to the program.

The Dawgs will be back in 2010 with a vengeance. The last (and only) time Richt lost 4 games in a season, we finished #2 the next season. With AJ Green/Marlon Brown (#2 WR in nation) at WR, Murray at QB, Ealey at RB, Charles at TE, Boykin and the gang, it should be a FUN YEAR in 2010.

Florida and LSU had 4 loss seasons recently. It happens to the best coaches. It’s how you respond. Richt’s proven track record as the 4th winningest coach in the NCAA from 2001-2008 and #2 shows how he responds.

Richt has outrecruited Meyers (and everyone else) over the last 5 years according to Scout and Rivals.

Richt’s QB’s consistently outrank Florida’s in TD’s and yards. Richt won a couple of Natl’ Championships as an assistant coach with Fl St. He’s coached up some Hesiman guys too.

jacketnation- UGA is having a terrible season…I’ll admit, but there’s no way you can say they’re the weakest team in the SEC. Who knows…they may be close, but I would say Vanderbilt is the worst, bc UGA has a better record, & bc UGA beat them. UGA has beaten several other SEC teams. I know that doesn’t give up much hope against Tech, but everybody has a bad season sometimes. Just ask USC, Choklahoma, & you may even be able to add LS Who to that list too, bc they seemed to blow a game yesterday as well. A lot of teams are down this yr.

Anyone who thinks that Meyer will leave the current “best college football program in Amercia” for a “no win” situation in South Bend is just wishing or dreaming. Won’t happen. He makes too much money and has too much unbelieveable talent there. Even with all that, the main reason he will stay in Gainesville is that his family loves the city, their church, their close friends (including the Donnovan family), and has established solid roots there. Also, Foley and the wealthy Florida Bull Gators will pay him anything Notre Dame offers. Meyer might let Notre Dame help increase his salary at Florida, but he will not go coach there. Now, I could see Charlie Strong going to Notre Dame. But again, he has a white wife and that might not set well with many of the Notre Dame alumni.

Thuga is absolutely correct. Once, a long time ago, UGA had a noble tradition of good sportsmanship among their players and fans. Now, all we see are thugs and rappers dancing when there is nothing to celebrate; laughing on the sideline after flubbing a kick, dropping a pass, or throwing an interception. This past week, several UGA players were overheard in an Athens bar (what are they doing there – getting ready to lose to UK) discussing the mistake they made in coming to UGA instead of elsewhere including Georgia Tech. Now, watching the mass exodus from Sanford Stadium with more than two minutes left a down less than a score, it appears that the mongrel nation (the fans not the passed dog) can only dream of being fans of another successful team like Alabama, Florida, and, yes, Georgia Tech. Sure, there are plaintive wails of we’re still better – that’s all that’s left for the ugay followers weak wailing and whimpering about “sellout” crowds and championships decades ago. You should quietly just throw away those gimmick red/black colors of your and try to blend in with another more successful and rising team. However, don’t be surprised when we still shun your cheap backing and smirk at your late arrival.

Both sides are embarrassing! But least UGA girls are prettier!

Now that the season is pretty much over we can just look at things for what they really are.

First of all I don’t blame Joe Cox for how this season has turned out. I blame Joe Cox’s OC for trying to make him into something he’s not, a playmaker. You can’t put the ball in JC’s hands every game and expect him to win it for you. He is not a playmaker. You get him to manage the game and get the ball constantly to the REAL playmakers in your offense to win the games for you. BIG MISTAKE!

The special teams has been REAL special all season long and whoever is the ST coach needs to be fired. Enough said!!

And also the defense has played with no heart or emotion all season long. The icing on the cake for me was when it really counted against the top teams on the schedule, GA’s defenses laid a big goose-egg every time. The REAL insult was the bye-week going into the FLA game. You have the week off but FLA was the stronger team and your defense with an extra week of preparation was STILL out of place, lost, missing tackles, and getting pushed around like tackling dummies. What a pathetic mess!!

If CMR keeps this staff intact next season, I as a life-long GA fan, will officially boycott the 2010 seasaon and refuse to watch or care about ANY games GA plays next year. It’s a shame that a program with the resources and alumni base of the UGA can’t seem to lure decent to legitimate coordinators to coach up these all-star recruits they get every year. CMR this is your time to finally stop being INSANE by putting your faith in the same coaching dummies on your staff. It’s unbelievable to think that you can continue with the same garbage year in year out and expect a different result. The only bright spot is all the young talent in the Freshmen, R-Freshman, and R-Soph classes. The real danger is if we can’t get a Will Muschamp, a Charlie Strong, a Gene Chizik, a John Tenuda, a Mark Whipple, etc to run the staff with CMR and discipline these kids, its gonna be a really sad 2010 for all of us in Dawg Nation!!

Here now, some of you Bulldog fans act as though you actually have the football talent to beat really good teams! Let’s be altogether reasonable about this: You don’t. It’s just the delusion that makes it seem as if it were so. Here’s a little secret that I’m going to go ahead an disclose to my lovely in-state rivalry buddies (but you can’t tell any other teams because we wouldn’t want this secret of success to get out) It is this: “Football requires a minimum degree of intellectual acuity.” Let’s be honest and face your starkest reality: You have a great paucity regarding this matter. UGA doesn’t have many players that have this intellectual acuity in such a quantity as to prevent them from committing penalties, dropped passes, and other lame acts on the field. The sooner this is admitted, then the sooner it can be addressed, It seems all those 4 and 5 star priviledged UGA recruits have the most meager intellectual skills (far below the average NCAA athlete). Why, when you get these’ mental pymies’ on the field, a rational person would only expect that they nearly lead the nation in penalties and turnovers. Just to be fair, let’s examine the facts as they relate to this matter and the current year’s record of the Georgia Bulldogs……..My, Oh MY how this Georgia team does commit penalties and turnovers. And what would you know…..They are almost dead first in these undesirable talents. Pssssst, Hey UGA fans, I’ll bet you a pocket full of rocks that this might make a difference in the outcomes of most of your games! But…I shouldn’t be reminding you of this, you might try to correct these things between now and Saturday and such an improvement could make a difference in the game. …………..Oh ..on the other hand…Never mind, you guys have realized this from the beginning and have chosen to ignore it because you have all those 4 and 5 star recruits who supposedly are gifted enough to overcome these matters….Not! (but obviously you have all these ’supposedly gifted athletes’ (a delusion in itself) that cause you to believe this.
Now, just to show you what good sportsmanship we have as the ‘Best Team in Georgia”, we are going to give you one further ‘tip on how to improve from your mediocrity (if that is at all possible). It is this: The problem is not with the coaches; its with the ‘not so intellectually gifted” players and fans. The coaching seems fine, even superior in many ways (one of the few compliments an honest individual could offer). The weak link in your program is the dire intellectual status of both the players you recruit and the redneck, ignorant, and dull fan base you have. It is doubtful that this can be easily remedied, especially if you are depending upon this improvement to come as a result of any educational programs offered in Athens. We could help, of couse, if such individuals received long term remedial assistance from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, but even then, there could be no guarantees as these individuals are Dawg fans and as such are affected by the most recalcitrant form of ignorance that can be imagined. Unfortunately, in most cases, the best that can be accomplished is to reform this ignorance to a ‘less virulent strain’. This is done by requiring the individual to ‘remain silent for the most part’ for the greatest portion of his/her waking hours.
Now this is has been a pleasure to be so helpful to the needy Dawg Nation. Afterall, this is Thanksgiving and a time to reflect on those in the deepest need. I am proud to say that I couldn’t think of any group in greater need at this time. Our state, too, is thankful that there is one, bright, shining example of what real football is all about, the GA Tech Yellow Jackets. All you wonderful (but delusional) Dawg fans have a nice Thanksgiving! I know it’s difficult to have to despair in times like these, but you can be thankful that Paul Johnson is generous and merciful and will probably not score more than 40 points on your pitiful, helpless, and sad Bullfrogs.(I meant Bulldogs) this year. Toodles!

As a UT fan I couldn’t hate Florida and Georgia more if I tried, but whoever this Georgia fan is who is trying to argue Joe Cox is better than Tim Tebow is shot out. C’mon dude. Tebow has won the Heisman. Set countless SEC records and been a part of 2 BCS championships. And working on #3 in 4 years. Really? Joe Cox? Even with red and black blinders on you can’t possibly be that blind. Can you? I don’t know if Tebow will make it as a qb in the pros and to be honest I don’t care, but Joe Cox couldn’t carry Tebag’s jock. That’s just plain silly.

As mediocre as Goff and Donnan were, neither lost to Kentucky in Athens. I realize that I was not at the game (thank goodness), but answer me this, please: When you’re up 20-6 at the half, and your QB has a tendency to throw int’s, why pass at all?
I’m a long, long way from beautiful Georgia, and few people over here will care that our vaunted, proud program has sunk to such a low level. I’m sick over it! Richt should remember that Phil Fulmer refused to fire his assistants. Lots of UT-Fulmer loyalists say now that he should have been dismissed several seasons ago. Remember that horrible whipping that Kiffin’s first team gave us a few weeks ago? Remember how Kiffin vowed NEVER to lose to Georgia? He may be counting on Richt’s mulish determination to keep Martinez.
If Richt does not fire Martinez immediately after the season and replace him with Rodney Garner, we will lose Garner, probably (back) to UT. I can’t bear the thought! I remember how Fulmer beat us like a drum, year after year, with so many of our own state’s better players!! Richt has won the recruiting wars because he has had Garner. Richt should promise Garner the Defensive Coordinator’s job NOW or resign.

Martinez probably saved Brooks’ job for him. I don’t know any Bulldog fans who want Martinez to keep his own. I wonder if a majority still wants Richt to keep his. I realize how successful and humble he has been, and he has made us proud. Still, this debacle makes me angry. The UT game and this one are simply inexcusable. We cannot tolerate this. The pronoun “we” includes Damon Evans. He has increased the contribution demands on season-ticket holders. With that money, he is being paid quite well to make tough decisions. So is Richt.
Has anyone called Prince Charles? He has had to live too long with blame for our last home game loss to Kentucky. Richt must wear this goat’s horns. Place the call, Coach.
I’m beginning to believe the insufferableTech blogger who laid Uga VII’s death at his coaches’ feet. Poor Uga, he couldn’t stand to see his team sink so low. It just killed him. I’m glad he was spared this latest humiliation.

refer to uga and its fans as ugay.

because they go ‘down’ so easy. it was fitting that this happened when they played a team with the initials of KY.

lets hope that the smart recruits notice a couple three things that happened this week.

1. ugay is getting worse and worse. not only from the start of a season to the finish but from season to season.
2. the klan was in attendance
3. articles written this past week not only talked about drunken behavior from the ugay fan base but it showed pictures of what happens when rednecks take over. thousands of pounds of trash was strewn accross the campus and drunken students were pissin in their own library.
3. ugay fans think more of uga than they do their players. has anybody read the boards and the filth the ugay fans are espousing about their own? why would a smart recruit want to play for a program like that …. keyword being smart.
4. anybody else notice that the stands emptied of ugay fans at the end of the 4th quarter when the goats still had a chance to pull out a win?

as far as uga goes… i have to wonder if he died at the hands of a uga fan that liked to kick his dog when it was down????????

i would say that it is sad to see how far a once proud program has fallen but i would be in error.

ugay has never been a proud program.

U-no- Good point. I can handle fans from opposing teams as long as they aren’t obnoxious, & they speak about how it really is, & resist the temptation of the bashing of a rival…just bc it’s not their team. That’s good sportsmanship.

Rod M.- You have some good point as well. I do get tired of people trying to say that UGA is Thug U, bc unforunately thugs are everywhere. I don’t mean that to sound like a racial comment by any means. Whenever a team is winning then nobody complains about that kind of stuff. I do think it’s a little bit silly that the players keep getting busted for the driving incidents. It just doesn’t sound to me like the legal issues are as bad as they have been in other yrs. Lets be honest…a driving incident like that isn’t that serious. There are other teams like Tenn…where players are getting in trouble for much more serious incidents…like armed robbery. I agree w/ most of your points though. R. Curran is great…the problem is that he’s talking about going pro. UGA’s always loaded w/ talent, & everyone always leaves early for the NFL. I could understand why the guys from last yr. would leave, but it sure would be nice if eveybody would return. It’s pretty bad that even when we’re having a bad yr…it still seems like we can’t keep people from leaving early. We have a lot of young talent, but it’s unfortunate that we may have to deal w/ early defections as well. I just hope they get some new assistant coaches, & that some of these guys that are thinking about leaving early will consider staying.

Thanks a lot for absolutely destroying our strenght of schedule. You truly are bottom feeders of the SEC. Kentucky has moved up a notch ahead of you.

what I call thug mentality is when you miss 5 plays and finally make one and stand there and beat your chest. And yes we all have them, but I am glad when we have a kid with a 15 yd penalty we do have a coach that will go to him on the sideline and put a foot in his butt…CMR didnt do that once last night so dont expect it to stop on its own.

Macon Dog in the Middles East, with all due respect, Coach Brooks is not in danger of losing his job, nor has been. He has brought back our prgram, which through no fault of his own, was one step away form the NCAA death penalty. He inherited a program that was limited to 63 scholarships. He won a total of nine games his first three years as head coach. In the three and a half seasons since, he has won thirty, (including last nights game). Far from wanting to get rid of Papaw, (his new nickname), true blue fans would like to see a statue of him, placed in front of Commonwealth Stadium, or better, have the stadium renamed Rich Brooks Stadium. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Thank you for your service in the defense of Nation. Godspeed.

Hey Georgia Idiots…here some numbers to chew on

Career
Tebow 8,300 yards, 81 TD, 15 INTS, 65% completion, 160ish passer rating
Stafford 7,700 yards, 51 TD, 33 INTS, 55% completion, 130ish passer

Pretty good for a fullback playing quarterback huh?

By the way, this is coming from a Tenneseee fan…but to hear all of the Georgia idiots who can’t recognize greatness is just so freakin annoying

In case you forgot…Tebow and his team are undefeated. That means that Tebow’s team won when they played Cox’s team. If you are that stupid to think Cox is better than Tebow then it does no good to argue with you. You are obviously incapable of rational thought. Fool.

Marinate UGA VII in vinegar and pepper, slow cook him and serve him at your football banquet.
