This is the picture? Do you really need to know more? An interception by Kentucky's Shane McCord of a Joe Cox pass set up the Wildcats' winning touchdown in a 34-27 upset of the Dogs.
ATHENS — They got bruised in Stillwater, blindsided in Knoxville and humbled in Jacksonville. Also, their dog died.
Nobody intended for Georgia’s season to unfold like a country-western song. It just sort of turned out that way.
So what were the objectives Saturday night? Easy. To create a memory for seniors who were playing their final game in Sanford Stadium. To diminish chances of the season ending in Shreveport. To look convincing enough in a win over Kentucky — whose 6-4 record entering the night mirrored Georgia’s — that the Bulldogs’ somewhat jaded fan base would start salivating over a possible upset next week on North Ave.
They whiffed.
With representatives from the Independence and Liberty Bowls in attendance, the Bulldogs held a 20-6 halftime lead over Kentucky, then unraveled like they have far too often. They committed four second-half turnovers. The Wildcats scored four touchdowns. Georgia went down, 34-27, in its final home game of the season, and it’s just as well because there probably are not a lot of folks around Athens who wanted to be subjected to another game this season, anyway.
Mark Richt is going to have a chore trying to keep his players pumped up after this one.
Most fans in the students section wore black. At this point, we can’t be certain if they were mourning the sudden loss of Uga VII, or the passing of significant bowl game hopes.
The Dogs just lost a home game to Kentucky for the first time in 32 years. Their record is now 6-5. It’s the most losses ever for a Mark Richt team. They would need to upset Georgia Tech and win whatever low-grade bowl game that takes them just to match Richt’s all-time low win total at Georgia in 2001 (final record: 8-4).
By any measure, it has been a dreadful season.
This won’t make things any easier for Richt. He has been fielding questions about the future of the program and what changes he might make, both in direction and his coaching staff. All this has been going with games still left in the season. Richt has been trying to lay out some tangible goals for his players –one of them was to close the season with five straight wins, which would have led to a respectable final record of 9-4.
Last week, the Dogs responded with a win over Auburn in possibly the team’s best performance of the year. But this was one of their worst — at least the second half was.
It looked like it might be an easy night. Four straight scoring possessions (two touchdowns, two field goals) to close the first half gave the Bulldogs a 20-6 lead. But if you throw out the Tennessee Tech game, do you know how many easy games this team has had this season? Zero. What could not have been predictable was a complete collapse.
It started when Branden Smith fumbled the second-half kickoff return. That set up one Kentucky touchdown. Joe Cox connected with Rantavious Wooten for a 43-yard touchdown to restore the Dogs’ 14-point lead at 27-13. But no lead has been safe with Georgia’s defense, not even against pedestrian teams like Kentucky. It’s why defensive coordinator Willie Martinez may have coached his final game in Athens, at least as the defensive coordinator.
The defense did nothing to help secure Martinez’s future. Late in the third quarter, the Wildcats closed to 27-20 when quarterback Morgan Newton hit La’Rod King for a 21-yard score. Early in the fourth, tailback Derrick Locke got behind the defense down the left sideline, snared a pass from Newton and blasted off for a 60-yard touchdown, tying the game.
Instead of responding with a score, Georgia responded with a meltdown. On the ensuing drive, Cox threw a pass over the middle right to defensive tackle Shane McCord. That set up the Cats at the Dogs’ 8-yard-line and led to Randall Cobb’s second TD of the game and a 34-27 Kentucky lead.
The meltdown was soon complete: While driving for a would-be tying score, Washaun Ealey fumbled a pitch at Kentucky’s one-yard line with 2:21 left. Another possession ended with an inteception. Checkmate.
This was not how Georgia expected its final home game to go. But it also didn’t expect the losses to Oklahoma State and Tennessee and so many other messes this season. The song never changed.

It wasn’t CMR, CWM, nor CMB; it was the players that didn’t perform. Firing the coaches isn’t necessarily the answer. If so, we could get Les Miles, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll, et al.
We have some of the sorriest “fans” in the country… 2:20 on the clock, 3 timeouts, down by 7, and UK pinned at the 1 yard … and fans leaving en mass. “Fans” booing; the players don’t know you’re booing the coaches or play-calling.
Of course we’re disappointed. So are the players and coaches. It’s disgusting that a 5th-year senior QB gets outplayed by a freshman QB. The coaches didn’t throw a single INT, nor fumble the ball, nor rack up all the ’stupid’ penalties. Yes, it was a terrible loss. And, as Schultz said, “…It’s the most losses ever for a Mark Richt team….”. Actually, that says a lot. All you Monday-morning QBs amaze me. If you’re a Bulldog fan, you’ll cheer em on against Tech. Saying you hope the Dogs lose against Tech (so as to assure coaching changes) is pathetic. I kinda wish the players would vote against going to a bowl. But they won’t, and I’ll get my tickets and go and back the team. I’ll back em through thick and thin.

tech will always be our b*%ch… You are one pathetic redneck fan if you think UGA even has a chance to beat us. Even when Dwyer leaves, we still have Jones, Wright Peeples, Allen and many others to step up. In addtition, we have a real QB with Nesbitt that is coming back. As long as Pual Johnson is there, UGA doesn’t win again. By the way, we still hold the record of 8 in a row. Good luck beating that streak. You better worry that we don’t beat the GT vs. Cumberland score and put 221 points on your team. We won’t score 221, but will score at least 50-60 and it will be enjoyable to watch. AS far as our stadium, quit whining about it. Even if we don’t sellout, who cares. I mean we are 7th in the nation and winning games. UGAG is 115 in penalties. Way to go! THWG!

Maybe Coach Richt should forget about going after top-rated recruits and concentrate on getting kids with perhaps a bit less talent but more character. Nah, the fans wouldn’t accept that. They would have nothing to brag about in the off-season. I hear they were number one off the field just a year ago. That’s something to be proud of.

#1: Fans who pose as Tech fans writing such derogatory things are no better than UGA fans who do it to us.
#2: It’s fine for UGA fans to vent and trash their QB, Coaches, etc, but it is not OK for Tech fans to do this.
#3: GT needs to worry about the next game ONLY! We’ve had our own meltdowns this year: 2nd half GT vs Clemson” and “GT vs UM.”
#4: GT fans better realize that UGA is hurt emotionally, wounded, and their mascot is dead. The coaches are frustrated and scared that next weekend may be their last game. Nothing is more dangerous that a wounded animal that’s fighting for its life. The way UGA erases some of the pain from last night is to take down the #7 team in the nation and their arch-rival. I hope CPJ is preaching this message to his players.
#5: Let’s put this whole football thing in perspective: It’s just a game! Yes, we all like to win, but these are college kids trying their best (hopefully) and coaches who are under intense pressure to win. If it doesn’t work this year, there is always next year, but at least let’s all have some class in dealing with the losses. (Tech fans are good at this, we’ve had a lottttttttttttt of practice.
#6: This is my only comment about UGA. If GT had lost the way UGA lost last night, I think CPJ would have stepped up immediately and accepted all blame. He certainly wouldn’t let his QB and assistant coaches be smeared in the press and by our own fans. I like Richt’s and think he is a class act, but his ability as a head coach is being tested. How he responds will be his legacy at UGA.

Inevitably, you’ll bring up the past, and boast of

You will point out that you have more wins than any

Go on, ignore that home loss to your archrivals in the

“Before you feel qualified to condemn young Joe Cox, you need to meet a few criteria:
(1) You must have played real football, in high school or college.
(2) You must have endured some mental pain or anguish, in the process.
(3) You must be a graduate of the University of Georgia.
Unless you meet all those criteria, just shut up.”
JimDawg, UGA Class of ‘60
JimDawg, this is a very typical attitude of a True Georgia Azzhole.
I know you probably donate monies to your old alma mater and think you have exclusive rights to criticize. However, the stands were full of people who buy the shirts, tags and the paraphernalia that helps support YOUR team. But these people go through mental pain and anguish in life everyday. You have a lot of ‘dam’ gall to think you and fellow football players have the exclusive right to criticize someone. I am sure it is a joy to work for you and maybe even to have been reared by you.

I am a Jacket through and through, but I did feel bad for the Dawgs last night. They just totally collapsed, and I think there really does need to be a complete coaching change at the top. The fans leaving early, while sad, was their final verdict on the leadership of UGA football.
As for Mike Bobo, I can’t see how you blame him – the problem was Joe Cox in the second half. Too many interceptions, plain and simple – Bobo didn’t throw the ball for him. If Cox doesn’t throw the interceptions or fumble the ball, the Dawgs win – it was that simple. To be sure, there were plenty of other mistakes by the Dawgs last night, but Joe Cox made more mistakes than anybody else, and each one was a devastating mistake.
Finally, to bkbroila – I will say a sideways comment to any Dawg I like at a UGA-Tech game, that’s what rivalries are about. This foiken nerd IT consultant is also an ex-paratrooper, and any attempt to bust my as ss will be met with immediate and overwhelming force. Consider your sideways comments to have already begun, loser. Go back to the trailer park and try to find a mutt to properly represent your great team in time for your (collective) butt whippin’ next week.
My apologies to UGA VII for the above remarks – he was in no way a mutt, he was a Dawg.

Turnovers and penalties are both attributed to lack of discipline which comes from coaching. UT has shown this from last year to this year. THIS IS THE WORST COACHED GROUP OF QUITE TALENTED PLAYERS I HAVE EVER SEEN AT ANY PROGRAM. THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW OF GARBAGE AND TO SOME DEGREE THE THIRD IN FOUR SEASONS. UNBELIEVABLY, RUCHT SEEMS TO HAVE LOST HIS FIRE.
If,after 3 out of 4 seasons have gone astray, Mark can not see what is happening…then Damon needs to “show” him. By show = I mean “you will terminate the contact of your OC & DC before we will accept any bowl game invitation”.

I have to admit it is easy to smile now that in just 2 short years the tables have turned on college football in this state with Tech now the more dominant program, but UGa fans should take heart that things can change quickly and will if the AD and head coach at Georgia make the necessary changes….but for now….Its great to be a Yellow Jacket. But for all the Jacket fans (and especially players) that think that a win is guaranteed next week better get ready for a typical Tech – Ga game and be prepared. But all in all I would say that Tech’s offense should really roll against that defense and even though Tech’s defense has been a little questionable at times – I just don’t see Joe Cox and an offense without AJ Green doing too much. My prediction – GT 41 UGa 20

We’ve witnessed what average recruiting or underperformance delivers in the SEC. There appears to be a common thread that ALL teams (except FL, crap) have experienced. 8-10 years is about the length of tiime a coaching staff and university can produce positive results before the chemistry is gone. It probably has more to do with the demands of the job and the fact that developing 18-22 year olds is as much art tas science. All UGA needs is a good recruiting year and an efficient QB to settle things down. Also, don’t count them out against Tech, heck, it is Tech and on any given day you don’t know how a team will perform.

Jborodawg and others who commented, unfortuately booing the players happened by many. The expectations and the bar to achieve is set by the coaches, hopefully the players will understand that, I didn’t boo and wouldn’t, but I felt the frustration and saw the bewilderment in the eyes of many there.
As far as fans leaving, it was a huge statement to Adams, Evans, and CMR that we’re tired of losing and something needs to happen. No amount of excuses, rationale, or anything else can explain the results of this season, along with the sliding trend of the previous two seasons and say things are OK. It couldn’t be the product of anything but a seeming loss of hunger, desire, fire, complacency, inability to change or gasp, poor coaching. As I’ve said before CMR is on the hot seat and can only cool it by winning. Whether he makes changes or not matters not one bit to me, it’s results I’m looking for. When UGA football becomes irrevelant and fans lose interest we have a serious problem in our program, and I mean serious.
Now let’s put things in perspective, football isn’t our first priority, those kids on the field aren’t the problem, the sun came up this morning and we should thank the good lord and count our blessings for all the wonderful things we have. I’m still proud to be a Dawg and am a damn good fan, but until I see some good faith effort by our administrators and Head Coach I will continue to ruffle feathers any way I can….

If there was ever a question about what school has the worst fan base in the country, Georgia fans have settled it. I’ll discount bloggers talking about their QB working as a fry cook because every school has the extreme element in their fan base. But for Georgia it’s bigger than that. We’ve all seen the pictures of trash left all over the campus from tailgaters. Last night we saw the mass exodus with 2 minutes left, Kentucky pinned on their own 1 yard line, with Georgia down 7 and with all 3 timeouts. There were recruits at the game, it was senior day, it was on national TV, and thousands of Georgia fans were streaming out of the game, having quit on their team. It takes hours to drive to the game, park, get to and from your seats, watch the game. And these fleeing fair weather fans couldn’t stay another 10 minutes. It has been the same story the last two years in Jacksonville. In 2008, Florida fans cheered for Georgia when they scored late in the game because the Georgia fans were gone. They also left early this year.
Why would any recruit in his right mind who had other offers decide to play for Georgia?
