Tech’s Dwyer would be No. 8 player in NFL draft, scout says (UPDATED)

Jonathan Dwyer has run to the head of the pack, according to NationalFootballPost.com

Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer has run to the head of the pack for running backs, says NationalFootballPost.com.

(I updated this blog with some comments from Wes Bunting below)

Georgia Tech’s latest surge has done more than just elevate the Yellow Jackets to the No. 7 team in the country. It has raised Jonathan Dwyer to the No. 8 draft-eligible player in the nation, at least according to one scouting website.

In his “Super 30″ rankings updated this week, Wes Bunting of NationalFootballPost.com lists Dwyer, a junior, as the best running back on the board and the No. 8 overall NFL prospect, ahead of Cal’s Jahvid Best (16th) and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller (22nd). Bunting called Dwyer “a violent runner who exhibits good vision between the tackles and has the initial burst to separate from defenders at the second level.”

Dwyer, who hasn’t yet said that he will enter the draft, has rushed for 610 yards and six touchdowns in the last four games, with a 7.27 per carry average.

Bunting also has Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan as the No. 17 player in the draft.

The National Football Post rankings differ from Mel Kiper’s Big Board and the Scout’s Inc. Top 100 list (Both require ESPN Insider membership. But I’ll share this if each of you promise to mail me 50 cents to help defray my expenses. OK? OK.)

Kiper wrote he generally doesn’t list juniors on his Big Board unless they’re obviously a top 15 player. Only two running backs made his overall list of top 25 players: Spiller (12) and Best (19). He has Dwyer listed as the second-best junior running back, behind Best.

Kiper also lists Morgan as the 15th best  overall player in the draft. Among juniors, he has Georgia’s Rennie Curran as the No. 2 outside linebacker, Tech’s Morgan Burnett as the No. 2 safety, Tech’s Demaryius Thomas as the No. 4 wide receiver and Georgia’s Reshad Jones as the No. 5 safety.

The Todd McShay/Scout’s Inc. Top 100 list, disagrees with Kiper and National Football Post. He lists Morgan as the No. 6 player in the draft and Dwyer at 34th. He has two Georgia players in his top 100, defensive tackle Geno Atkins (65) and Jeff Owens (109). Curran is not on his list.

I’ll try to check these lists once in a while to keep you up to date.

UPDATE: Here are some comments from Bunting:

♦ On Dwyer: “He’s a violent runner who not only possesses the ability to be physical in between the tackles, but exhibits an impressive initial burst in the open field with the first step to separate from defenders at the second level. Dwyer looks NFL ready right now and has the ability to carry the load at the next level and be an every down type of back. Plus, coming out of the option offense, I think he’s going to benefit greatly from lining up eight yards behind the [line of scrimmage] in the NFL and will be even more instinctive and natural running the ball inside then he is now. His combination or power, burst and lateral agility or second to none in college football.”

♦ On why he’s ahead of Spiller and Best: “I don’t know if Spiller is an every-down back. [He] looks more like a Felix Jones type runner to me. As for Best, [he has] big play ability, and might have a bit more upside then Dwyer, but  isn’t as physical and might have some trouble staying healthy. Dwyer just looks more like a sure thing to me. A more physically gifted Jonathan Stewart type runner in the NFL.”

♦ On his own background: “I am the Director of College Scouting for the Nationalfootballpost.com. I have been scouting college football since 2002.”

SEC – I understand. For example, I’ve always wondered about the many “coach so and so’s” that post on the blogs. What I’m saying is that the AJC autologs IP addresses. Just have to be careful.

Some do go to Tech for an education. For most students, it takes more than 4 years.

Read the whole article. The previous class was equal at 48 % for Tech and Georgia. Who knows what it will be next year. Notre Dame graduated 98%, if I recall correctly what I read on the NCAA site yesterday.

Calculus, chemistry, thermodynamics, electro-magnetics … GA Tech.

Algebra, home economics, basketweaving, recreational sports management … UGA.

While both schools have football player graduation rates that are too low, consider the typical football student-athlete curriculum at each of the schools … then you can really LYAOL.

Maybe the academic performance stats will improve in 2 years whan Damon Evans’ stats start. Same for Dan Radokovich when his start to show up in 5 years.

Hey guys – stop picking on SEC. He said that Dwyer is a great back, just that he thinks #8 is a little high for him to be drafted. Who knows what will happen before the draft. Dwyer has to get timed in the 40, do the bench press, etc. All of those numbers that the NFL guys love so that they can do a CYA – you know, when they tell the fans down the road “Tony Mandarich scored really high at the combine, How were we to know he couldn’t play”.

JD looks like a 1st round draft choice to me – for the right team. He would be crazy to come back to GT if he is going to go in rounds 1 or 2.
Same with Derrick Morgan – he should go pro too.

BeBe and Morgan Burnett could probably use another year. I can’t see them being drafted in the first 3 rounds this year

Those graduation rates for Georgia (48% and 57% for the last 2 years) are for the last years under Dooley. Adams pushed him out, if I recall correctly. The basketball team rate was 18%. Adams is a fanatic about academics.

Radakovich put a bonus clause of $125,000 in Paul Johnson’s contract extension that he signed last year if his team achieves a 70% graduation rate.

GT – Thanks. Maybe that will stop some of the rumors. Or not. Which came first, Meyer’s 2008 extension, or his saying Notre Dame is his dream job?

The Chicago Tribune is all over the Notre Dame thing. Meyer, Stoops, Kelley, Ferentz, and more. Meyer’s $5 Million contract a problem? Weis’ buyout? Hah! An si.com ND source called any contract amount “pocket change.”

If a UGA player ran for 600+ yards against Virginia, Vandy, Wake, and Duke Schultz would undoubtedly make some smart arse comment about how it was against Virginia, Vandy, Wake, and Duke and have little else to say. But a Georgia Tech player does it and all the guy wants to talk about is draft status. Go figure. If you’re going to be a biased hack at least make it funny Schultz.

I really think The “DIESEL” stays for bigger things at Tech. The money will be there in 5 yrs. The Players Union will not let the rookie cap happen. The money rookies make and the portion that goes into the PLAYERS UNION will never end. Stafford was STUPID but then again he was a Dawg.

Dwyer could probably beat the doggies single handedly. I would not trade Dwyer for ga’s entire team. Apparently the pros agree. You call those washouts you have RBs? You are kidding, right? I wonder what Richt’s strategy is for stopping Dwyer. It would be a hoot.

Obviously, each player should do whatever is best for them, but strictly as a GT fan…………I hope they decide to stay at GT a little longer!

Rashad Jones? Rashad Jones? Is he that guy from Decatur who was so highly rated in high school that Les Miles came to his home the night before signing day? Seems like there’s a guy on the Georgia team named that who pushes people a lot and runs in after someone else has tackled the runner and kinda gets a little lick in. The same one who’s always–well not always; sometimes he’s not even in the picture–who’s several steps behind the received he’s supposed to be covering. Well,if an NFL team does draft him, they will certainly get a “fresh” body because he hasn’t used it much at Georgia. Sorriest excuse for a Georgia DB I’ve ever seen.
