Worried about Matt Ryan? Johnston says you’re nuts

Count Daryl Johnston among those who don't doubt Matt Ryan's future.

Count Daryl Johnston among those who don't doubt Matt Ryan.

Jumping off the Matt Ryan bandwagon? Daryl Johnston has a message for you.

“If they’re selling, I’ll buy their seat,” said the Fox analyst and former Dallas Cowboys fullback. “His intangibles are off the chart. He’ll be fine. It’s very difficult to find a quarterback, and the Falcons have a very, very good one. He’s a young guy who’s going to get better. Did he set the bar high last year? Absolutely. But what he’s going through now is completely normal. Peyton Manning went 3-13. Troy Aikman was 0-10. I’m not saying Matt Ryan is either one of those guys, but it’s normal to struggle.”

Johnston worked the Fox broadcast last week when Ryan threw two interceptions that played into the Falcons’ 28-19 loss at Carolina. He also watched the Falcons’ wins over San Francisco and Washington, and will work this week’s game against the New York Giants in the Meadowlands.

Ryan has thrown at least one interception in six straight games, and has 10 in the last five. But, no kidding: Johnston started laughing when I mentioned to him that some fans and media members had increasing concerns about the second-year quarterback.

“I’m sure Matt will be the first to tell you that he’d like to have back that fourth-quarter pass to Michael Jenkins,” Johnston said. “He didn’t have to throw that. It was a tw0-man route and Carolina was dropping seven into coverage and the ball sailed on him. But in the drive before that, when they went for the field goal that [Jason Elam] missed, Matt was great. He took what the defense gave him. He completed some short passes and moved the team down the field. That’s what surprised me so much about the interception.”

Surprisingly, Johnston downplayed the significance of the loss of running back Michael Turner, who is likely out for at least Sunday’s game against the Giants, and possibly longer, with an ankle sprain.

“As long as Jerious Norwood is healthy, it won’t be as big a deal,” he said (although Norwood has missed four straight games with a strained hip flexor). “Jason Snelling stepped into a difficult situation last week when Turner left and Norwood wasn’t 100 percent, and he did great. Obviously, they’re not the same style offense without Michael Turner. But Norwood and Snelling are pretty good and they can do some of the same things.”

Earlier today, I attempted to break down the NFC wild card picture.  Johnston still views the Falcons as a potential playoff team but believes the race won’t be decided until the final week of the season

“Minnesota and New Orleans have elevated themselves,” he said. “The East [Division] will be a tough race and I think Arizona will win the West. But those two wild card spots are going to be difficult for anybody to clinch. I think it’s going down to the end.”

What’s Vick’s stats so far this year…………like a 37. qb rating……..27 yards rushing……..wasn’t his longest pass 4 yards?? I would have started Matt Schaub over him any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Sid: Get your jokes in now…you should…..Vick isn’t playing much because the Eagles have a franchise QB…McNabb has earned every right to start. Vick will have his time again….and he’ll DEFINITELY be better than Matt “Noodle Arm, Field Goal, Mr.Checkdown” Ryan. i gurantee it Thats what people like you do…kick people when they’re “down”. The thing is, Vick is making millions while you’re driving a tractor somwhere with a dip in your mouth, yet you think you can judge someone, lmao.

You’re a piece of dirt.

Vick Supporter: So you are saying Vick is not a franchise QB? Glad you finally realize it. Look, the unfortunate simple truth is Vick won’t be able to stay drug free and I imagine he will be arrested again within 3 years. That’s what he is, dirt……..and according to you I know dirt. You mention “kicking someone when their down”, yet you and your fellow Ryan bashers are doing that very thing, judging someone struggling. I have no idea if Ryan will turn out to be a Peyton Manning or a Ryan Leaf but I support our team win, lose, or draw. Someone wrote earlier that Ryan was responsible for 50% of the Falcons woes this year………I just don’t get that. We all know our defense is rebuilding (not sure why we got rid of some key players and I don’t mean Brooking), our O line is not measuring up to the job they did last year, key injuries, Elam not producing, a very tough schedule…….why all the Ryan bashing?
I see one blogger constantly repeat “dump the chump” without any input on what they would do in place of Ryan. They think Redman or Wilson should start? Do they want to trade for someone? Do they just want to cancel the rest of the games and see who we can get in next years draft…..?
Seriously, go get on a Chicago blog and jump on their “Dump Cutler” bandwagon. The fact is right now we have a winning record and are only in contention for a wild card spot unless the Saints go unexpectedly and terribly south. We needed to win that Carolina game and the ENTIRE team left that win on the field in Charlotte, they know it. The Giants need a win this weekend every bit as badly as the Falcons, it will be a tough game but I think we can pull it out. But for that to happen the ENTIRE teams has to show up.

@Sid

I see you made a comment about “Ryan Bashers”……you telling me that he doesn’t deserve to be criticized right now? I know Vick SURELY was even if he had a good game. With the “kicking someone when he’s down” comment, you’re judging Vick like he’s the starter in Philly….his stats right now are irrelevant. Judge the man when he’s a starter….that’s what people are doing to Ryan, yet you throw out Vick’s QB Rating yet he’s getting limited plays per game.

Also, when did I say that Vick wasn’t a franchise QB? Obviously he was/still is…..Vick put the Falcons on the map and the team had been around for over 3 decades when Vick arrived. NO ONE IN THIS TOWN HAD ANY INTEREST IN THE FALCONS UNTIL VICK CAME, AND THATS EVEN AFTER THE “LMAO…SUPER BOWL “RUN”" LMAO. Admit it man….Vick put this team on the map, and he’s a WINNER. You can talk about his last 2 seasons (which you “fans” say it was COMPLETELY his fault, yet with Noodle..I mean Ryan you now say its a “team game”,lol), yet Vick STILL has a winning record as a starter…..explain that if you’re man enough.

I defend and support Vick because I believe in redemption and he is my favorite QB. People call me a racist because I support him, yet I would do the same thing if someone of a different race went thru the same thing (after they’ve paid their debt to society first). Thats why I believe Vick will be a better player than he was the first time around. Vick needed to be humbled….and he is. Besides all of the BS decisions that the team made personnel wise, Vick felt he was “the man”, and Mr.Blank had something to do with that (pushing him in a wheechair, etc etc etc).

He’s still a better QB than Ryan, skill wise. Ryan only has the edge overall because he’s playing and Vick isn’t. Ryan will be an average QB at best….and average QBs can win in this league (Dilfer) with the right pieces around them. The only problem is, the Falcon’s management will find a way to F it up. Never fails. this town doesn’t know what to do or how to treat a Superstar. Never has, never will.

From an ESPN article:

2. Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants: This isn’t an elimination game for the two NFC playoff contenders, but it sets the stage for what we’ll see in the NFC for the next month. New Orleans and Minnesota have all but wrapped up the top two seeds in the conference. There are seven teams with records of 5-4 or 4-5 playing for the final four spots, and many of those teams face each other down the stretch. The Giants got a double break in Week 10. First, they rested their injured defense during the bye. Second, the Eagles and Cowboys lost.

The Falcons have major problems at left corner, their offense really misses injured running back Michael Turner and quarterback Matt Ryan is throwing a bit too high to his left. Those are worries.

Key line in the paragraph….

“Matt Ryan is throwing a bit too high to his left. Those are worries”

That line, my friends, proves my point again….LACK OF ARM STRENGTH. When he throws the ball to his left, the balls lack velocity.

Since you people have already “annointed” him as the next Manning or Brady, looks like you guys are wrong. Manning and Brady both have strong arms. Not Ryan

The QB position requires someone with intelligence to succeed at it………….Vick doesn’t come close to Ryan in that department. I mentioned the bashing of Ryan, now you mention criticism……..now you change your position? I am all for honest evaluation and critic of players but for the most part a certain amount of people are only here to continue to beat the drum for Vick and BASH Matt Ryan. You say Vick felt like he was “the man”, well he was for a while but nobody had anything to do with his decisions to torture dogs and organize a cross state gambling operation than himself. The man had millions and he chooses that? Now that just reeks of intelligence doesn’t it. Pushing the guy in a wheelchair? He gave him a push, not a Kingdom. You scoff at the Falcons Super Bowl year………I notice Vick never took us to the big game. Tony Dungy begged Philadelphia to add him to the roster. You say no one in this town had any interest in the Falcons until Vick came……? Man, believe it or not that is the stupidest thing you have conjured up yet. I would say it should be more that YOU were not a Falcons fan until Vick showed up. Your damn straight it’s a team game. Vick’s success, albeit limited, was achieved with the blood, sweat, and tears of many others. His lifetime winning percentage is about .500, less than Matt Ryans right now. Vick and Ryan are worlds apart and I would be happy if they both did well, but Vick doesn’t play for my team anymore, and never will again. No one will ever wear the #7 jersey for the Falcons again, it is soiled forever. Philadelphia will probably trade Vick at the end of the year, probably for a 3rd round draft pick. Vick could help some teams even though he is not a prototype QB, maybe Oakland. I doubt Cleveland would touch him.

Matt Ryan needs to toughen up ans stop being such a good old boy. He is to soft and plays scary teams are now figuring out that if you hit him or pressure him a couple times he is going to throw a couple picks. Those Ryan bashers the idiot Vick Supporters and the idiot Matt “Choke” Ryan bloggers are fools. They keep saying “The Great Mike Vick has Returned”, which is foolishness and they are slamming Ryan. What you fools dont realize is WHO IS IN A BETTER POSITION, Ryan or Vick? Vick is nothing more than a benchwarmer who sits quietly on the bench for 60 minutes per game. He gets absolutely zero minutes of playing time and might get one token play per month just to keep his britches from freezing. Whereas Ryan is a starting at qb who is enjoying playing for 60 minutes. He is also the reigning “Offensive Rookie of the Year” with all the perks that go with that as long as all the endorsement deals that go with that. Ryan is rich with a lucrative contract and he is also in a mild slump that I assure you he will snap out of on Sunday against the Giants when the Falcons crush the G-Men. Which of these players (Vick or Ryan) is in a better position? It can be Vick because Vicks pilot light has gone out and its pretty much lights out on his career while Ryan is absolutely assuredly headed for the Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio as soon as his playing days are over. So once again whose career is in better shape? You should know the answer to that question but if you dont then you are dumber than Vick.

Ryan will someday have a statue of himself at the Gerogia Dome.
Ryan will lead the Falcons to a superbowl Vick-less victory next year!
Ryan will win the league MVP award next season.
Ryan will be enshrined in Canton, Ohio soon after his playing days are

Ryan is the best quarterback the Falcons have ever had. Period.

I really dont care what anybody says about the Falcons. I think the reason why we stink right now is that we lost three standout defensive players from a year ago. If we still had them, the Falcons would be undefeated. These three guys should have never been let go because we are suffering in those areas which are vacated by those players who are no longer here. The replacements for them are simply not doing the job. Keith Brooking, Lawyer Malloy and James Foxworth. Like Ive said many times, if we had those three guys here playing for te Falcons this season, we would win the superbowl this season. With those three guys we are better than the Saints and the Colts. Without them, we are a middle of the road football team (probably 16th in the league). We let go too much talent and we dont have adequate replacements for their positions by the folks who are currently playing their spots. If we could bring them back, we would immediately win the superbowl.

Boy, I sure am an idiot….after looking up some REAL stats not just the stats I WANT to see, makes me realize that the greatest passers in the history of the NFL also had slumps in their second seasons! Lets make some comparisons:

Matt Ryan QB Rating the last 5 games

68.4
66.1
46.6
81.1
57.4

AVG = 63.92

Dan Marino (3rd Season, Games 5-9)

57.4
55.7
107.0
65.2
36.3

AVG = 64.32

Brett Farve (1993 Season, Games 2-5)

56.1
49.1
69.0
56.1

AVG = 57.575

Boy, those QB’s really sucked. I’m sure glad that their respective teams “DUMPED THE CHUMP” or else they might have ended up winning something like the majority of their games or some super bowls, and HOF status. Let me ask you “CHOKE”ster, and you may be right, but what if your wrong? We “dump the chump” and lose another HOF QB????

All the greats struggle at times early in their careers, with very few exceptions. Even Peyton had a time in his 4th season where in a 4 game stretch his average was in the 60’s….So I’m sick of you pointing out stats that really have no bearing on what MIGHT happen. But seriously, how the hell do you even consider pulling a franchise QB who has won the majority of his games, and has a 60+ completion percentage?

Riddle me that.

Vick Supporter: NFL historians my ass…………….roflmao…….!!! In your fantasy Vick has already QBed the Falcons to the Super Bowl, hello, hello, earth to your dumb ass brain, it didn’t happen! You can’t or won’t give credit to a Falcons team that earned and deserved the right to the SB. You say we could still win if Ryan were hurt and we had Turner running the football……..you just don’t know football my challenged friend. Yes, this is a blog, say anything you want, but if you want to bash our QB what is the point it bringing up Vick, he ain’t here and he ain’t gonna be here. If you have a better plan than Ryan as our field general then spit it out. You will be doing this same thing when Vick is out of football in probably as little as 2 years. I was once a Vick supporter, but I also supported the entire team. You basically ignore the other 54 players who worked their asses off. Vick did some good things and was exciting to watch, a gifted athlete no doubt. But, unless I am mistaken, his only remaining tie to Atlanta is a home in foreclosure. He has lost a step and will never have the moves he once had, not being a prototype QB he just doesn’t have the passing accuracy to compliment what his legs have left. Face it, your mad as hell that Vick let you down and you just can’t get a grip on how someone with so much could throw it all away for so little. Coddled by ownership………?? I just don’t get that. He was continually being told to be careful with his off field activities. Truly, if he were being coddled Michael Vick would never have hung the first dog from a tree. Immature? No, a sick son of a bitch. I am all for Vick getting his life back together. I would like to see him work with youth and teach them NOT to be like Mike. But it seems odd that we aren’t hearing about any philanthropistic activities. He let down his team, he let down his city, he let down his brothers and sisters.
You say Ryan can’t throw left………..hmmmm, I remember one hell of a throw in a game against Chicago last year, I believe that was to the left…….yep, that’s correct 26 yards on a string to the left sideline, stopping the clock with 1 sec left. Pretty good throw ay?
The Falcons made the playoffs in Ryan’s rookie season, you say Vick had us in the NFC championship in his second year. There you go again, talking like Vick lined up against the defense all by himself. You really do believe this superman crap don’t you. One last thing, you say Vick is a franchise QB…..?? $1.625 million to warm the bench. That’s got franchise all over it.

You guys keep talking about last year’s “standout” defensive players we let go. Based on what facts? Here’s a few: Foxworth is being declared a “bust” by the Baltimore media and Ravens fans. Check their message board conversations about this “standout” player. Milloy couldn’t get signed by anyone until Mora, Jr. took pity on him and signed him just as the season started. Have you watched his “standout” play for the Seahawks? Worse than last year, folks. And Brooking? Other than make a fool out of himself on the sidelines acting like a highschool cheerleader, he is making the same kind of tackles in Dallas that he was here his last few years, late and “pile-on.”

Ryan did do better today at not looking frightened in the pocket, but you can still tell he has a definite hit avoidance. All in all he had a good game. I haven’t seen a defense that was in your face all day like the Giants, it makes you wonder how they lost 4 in a row? Also I have to question the speed of our receivers as the Giants D-backs were in our hip pocket all day long. I don’t think our wide outs are physical enough, they don’t seem to play well against physical backs. Jenkins drop in the zone was inexcusable. We really miss Douglas. We seem to be just a couple of players away from being a really good team. One dynamic receiver and a couple of guys on defense.

Hi,

Just joined up here and am enjoying reading the blog. I must admit I am a little surprised at all the criticism of Ryan, Coach Smith, and the team in general. I agree with Larry and Dustin. Our team has a lot of promise. Matt will be fine! “Moose” Johnston is correct, imho. I started watching football and the Falcons with my grandfather when I was a little girl and I’m 50 now. Remember Zook?

Maybe I am just used to our guys losing, but I think some fans are expecting too much, too soon.
Not a Vick fan. Glad he is gone. I think Ryan will be a better passer when all is said and done. Of course, nobody can run like Vick, but I’d rather have a QB like Ryan. All the folks who are downing Ryan now … what were you saying last year? Do you think last year was a fluke?

The Falcons will win the SuperBowl this season. Matty “Ice” Ryan and the gang are getting ready to embark on a 6-0 run. This run will include convincing wins over the New Orlenas Saints, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, as well as the other opponents. The Falcons WONT lose another game this year and the last win will be the SuperBowl, and they will win that one too!!!!! Ive NEVER been more excited about the Falcons than I am now with that incredible loss against the Giants. Dont tell me the Falcons didnt outplay the Giants. There were two miscues by our players (Jenkins dropped touchdown pass in the end zone) and Jason Elam (missed chip shot field goal) that cost of the game, which if those players had converted would have given us the win. Had those two players earned their paychecks on Sunday we would have won the game in regulation 41-31. Its unfortunate because the fact that the game was tied after 60 minutes meant that our fate was in the hands of a coin toss, which shouldnt be the case. We lost the coin toss SO WE LOST THE GAME. Win the coin toss and you win the game. That rule needs to change somehow because its unfair to the team that loses the coin toss. I never really didnt like the coin toss rule to start with. They should have let both teams continue playing for a 15 minute overtime period. The team which was ahead after 15 minutes should have been awarded the Victory. It shouldnt be sudden death because the team that wins the coin tost (69%) of the time goes on to win the game in overtime. The other team that loses the coin toss just wasted 60 minutes of busting their rear ends in the regulation game for nothing. What a shame!

MATTY ICE IS PROGRESSING FASTER THAN ANY QB THAT HAS EVER COME INTO THE ASSOCIATION! HE IS ON TARGET TO PASS ALL QUARTERBACKS FOR YARDS, TDS, WINS, ETC. ICE WILL BE THE GREATEST QUARTERBACK TO EVER LIVE, AND I DONT THINK YOU CAN SAY THE SAME FOR MIKE “Dogfighter” VICK.

Two more weeks before Vick comes back home. Looks like Matty is going steady at a average level while all the rednecks are still trying to make him a legend.I find it funny win the Falcons lose now its never Matty Noodle arms fault but for some reason you people always found away to blame Vick.
