Worried about Matt Ryan? Johnston says you’re nuts

Count Daryl Johnston among those who don't doubt Matt Ryan's future.

Count Daryl Johnston among those who don't doubt Matt Ryan.

Jumping off the Matt Ryan bandwagon? Daryl Johnston has a message for you.

“If they’re selling, I’ll buy their seat,” said the Fox analyst and former Dallas Cowboys fullback. “His intangibles are off the chart. He’ll be fine. It’s very difficult to find a quarterback, and the Falcons have a very, very good one. He’s a young guy who’s going to get better. Did he set the bar high last year? Absolutely. But what he’s going through now is completely normal. Peyton Manning went 3-13. Troy Aikman was 0-10. I’m not saying Matt Ryan is either one of those guys, but it’s normal to struggle.”

Johnston worked the Fox broadcast last week when Ryan threw two interceptions that played into the Falcons’ 28-19 loss at Carolina. He also watched the Falcons’ wins over San Francisco and Washington, and will work this week’s game against the New York Giants in the Meadowlands.

Ryan has thrown at least one interception in six straight games, and has 10 in the last five. But, no kidding: Johnston started laughing when I mentioned to him that some fans and media members had increasing concerns about the second-year quarterback.

“I’m sure Matt will be the first to tell you that he’d like to have back that fourth-quarter pass to Michael Jenkins,” Johnston said. “He didn’t have to throw that. It was a tw0-man route and Carolina was dropping seven into coverage and the ball sailed on him. But in the drive before that, when they went for the field goal that [Jason Elam] missed, Matt was great. He took what the defense gave him. He completed some short passes and moved the team down the field. That’s what surprised me so much about the interception.”

Surprisingly, Johnston downplayed the significance of the loss of running back Michael Turner, who is likely out for at least Sunday’s game against the Giants, and possibly longer, with an ankle sprain.

“As long as Jerious Norwood is healthy, it won’t be as big a deal,” he said (although Norwood has missed four straight games with a strained hip flexor). “Jason Snelling stepped into a difficult situation last week when Turner left and Norwood wasn’t 100 percent, and he did great. Obviously, they’re not the same style offense without Michael Turner. But Norwood and Snelling are pretty good and they can do some of the same things.”

Earlier today, I attempted to break down the NFC wild card picture.  Johnston still views the Falcons as a potential playoff team but believes the race won’t be decided until the final week of the season

“Minnesota and New Orleans have elevated themselves,” he said. “The East [Division] will be a tough race and I think Arizona will win the West. But those two wild card spots are going to be difficult for anybody to clinch. I think it’s going down to the end.”

8-8 Final record for the Atlanta Falcons 2009 Season ends. Out with the (OLD) and in with the (New). We are in need for strong youthful
outside linebackers as well as defensive ends. Norwood also looks to be great trade bait for an establish corner back that can play for us righ away. Listen, I not saying I have given up on my home team Atlanta Falocns. What I’m saying is “Mr Blank” please listen to the public out cry for help. Larry Johnson was aval for 48hrs and with our Bunson Burner running out of gas we made not steps in the right direction towards a non-black out future. Go Falcons!

Daryl J. –

In case you read these…

I agree with you 100% on Matt. Will be fine.

Advice for you –

Dont feel like you have to talk every second of the broadcast. Some silence is fine. You rant and babble the same points to death and it really drags down the broadcast. You are not that great an analyst and the more you talk the more you show it.

Listen to some tape of Aeikman, Jaws, Gundy… and take some pointers. Your constant talking is liking to listening to the NFL Network where they all talk over each other.

Johnston did a great job articulating the things he was doing well while not having a good day throwing the ball. You hear him checking into the right plays more often than not at the line which means he’s understanding what he’s seeing. He carries out his fakes which also helps the running game. The little things he’s not doing well right now are hurting him through the air. Footwork, Pocket Presence….these are things Bill Musgrave can and will iron out. Ryan is a competitor and he wants to win I have no reason to believe he won’t get his struggles worked out.

Bartkowski could throw it a mile with incredible touch, thread the tiniest needle. Chandler was a good leader and excellent technician that took a great team to the Super Bowl. Both very good, but Bart was the best.

Gosh, why are all the good ole boys jumping on me – can we be friends :)

But, on a serious note – what does it have to do with your “great hope” being a B.U.S.T?

I mean it’s not like he has a stunt double or something.

- 5 straight games with a pick

- 10 picks in the last 5 games

- QB RATINGS of 68, 66, 46, 81 & 57

- Acting like he’s on “Dancing With The Stars”

I mean, did a demon possess his tiny soul and say “Matt throw the ball to the other team”? Damn that boy needs to see an exorcist or something.

“I see dead people” – that must be his motto.

If I wanted to throw a game, he would be my guy – no one is doing it better. He is a guru at that.

If he was at the Apollo he would definitately win, because nobody IMPERSONATES an NFL quarterback any better.

I dont agree that Bartkowski was the best. Chander was good enough to get the Falcons to their only superbowl. Had it not been for the Eugene Rosbinson distraction the Falcons would have won the superbowl and beat John Elway. How do I know? They crushed them during that same regular season when they were en route to a 14-2 record. How do I know they would have won the game? Because the Falcons were the most dominant team left in football after the Falcons defeated the Minnesota Vikings in that years championship game. The Falcons in their history have blown two chances to be superbowl winners. 1st in 1980 when they had the best team in football and 2nd in 1998 when they were the remaining best team in football. Its a shame because the city should have experienced two Supebowl winners from what I saw. In 1980 Bartkowski had a bunch of weapons, but Leeman Bennetts conservative play calling in the superbowl did us in. However back to Matt Ryan, Matty Ice IS UNQUESTIONABLY THE BEST QB THE FALCONS HAVE EVER HAD. PERIOD. As I say in all of my BLOGS, Matt Ryan will someday be a first ballot hall of famer. Guaranteed.

No one should worry about Matt Ryan. Did you see the game in which the legend was born? last years Chicago game. If you didnt see, go back and roll the tapes. Matt orchestrated an improbable victory after the bears scored and took the lead, leaving the Falcons with only 11 seconds on the clock. Matt took those 11 seconds and took ORCHESTRATED THE MOST CLUTH DRIVE IN NFL HISTORY, because it took only one play to set it up. Much faster than John Elways ‘the drive against cleveland years ago’. Dont worry about Matt Ryan because he will be starting in the pro bowl this year.

Bartkowski WAS DEFINITELY THE BEST DEEP BALL PASSER the game has ever seen. He should have been a first ballot hall of famer but because the falcons stunk most of the years he played for them, Bart got no consideration at all.

Every one of Pat White’s Wildcat cameos is the exact opposite of Michael Vick’s cameos in Philly. With White, anything is possible. With Vick, it’s just depressing. This might be the single worst comeback that didn’t involve a porn star, wrestler, musician or Magic Johnson. Can we all agree that (A) he lost his legs; (B) pre-2007 Vick is gone and not coming back; and (C) it doesn’t matter where he plays next year, since he won’t be good, anyway? You know how you can block people on Twitter? I wish I could block all “Where is Michael Vick going in 2010?” stories from my eyes and ears. Doesn’t matter. We don’t care.

Lou. You are absolutely right about Bartkowski. .threw the deep ball better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Plus, he had Alfred Jenkins & Alfred “Action” Jackson to throw to. .later, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson. .Andrews & Cain. .fun team to watch & pull for. .before that, the so-called offensive line almost got him killed. .I’m surprised he can still walk.

Good afternoon Mr. Schultz!!! I wondered where you were. We have not heard from you during the Hawks excellent start and the ESPN NBA #1 ranking this week!!! I thought you might write a positive article about Coach Woodson or Joe Johnson or any other positive angle you could have come up with given the excellent start. However I am not surprised you have not. Well just in case folks have missed my response from your last entry, I thought I would re-send it.

Jeff just leave the Hawks alone. Go write about something or someone else…I am begging you!!! They have great “karma” currently and the BEST thing that you could do for the team is stay as far away from them as possible. Mr. Bradley, Mr. Smith and Mr. Sugiura have them covered. Go win your pulitzer another way, seriously!!!

Well, well, well hello to “Hawk Nation” and I hope everyone had a good off season (even you Jeff although I was very surprised to see you were still with the paper…interesting). I wonder if there was another writer who wrote for the AJC who constantly criticized your writing and asked repeatedly to have you replaced and implied you have not done a good job even though things improved every year while you were there even to the point that you were among the the top 25% of the writers in the country. When not too long ago you were ranked at the absolute bottom, how you would like it?

I wonder if that writer would be “fair and balanced” (no pun intended) if every single frickin time they wrote about you, no matter what, the writer was saying how bad a job you are doing…hhhmmmm!!! Again, I wonder if you would think that writer had an agenda or it was personal. You have been an absolute jerk Jeff (seriously) when it comes to your balanced reporting on Woody. Not the Hawks or the current GM, just Wood…hhmmmm!!! With all of the current talent out there with Newspapers closing, cutting back and so forth, I am certain the AJC could find a much better writer than you and even you would have to agree to that, right? Take Tony K and Mike Wilbon to name a couple from our paper here locally and I know Tony has resigned from the Post. By the way, there talent would CRUSH yours. Why don’t I ever see you on any of the national shows for geust spots and expertise occasionally (like they do on the Sports Reporters or Around the Horn or the Colin Cowher show?), Just wondering?

Jeff, you should be removed, Fired!!! If I or you had a child in a physics or calculus class, who got off to a very, very slow start, and over the school year, studied hard, asked for help, kept working, met with the teacher, got some tutoring, stayed positive, formed a study group and over the year their grades got better and better and by the end of the school year was one of the top 8 students in a 32 student class, I and you would praise and compliment and really appreciate what they has accomplished!!! This is exactly what coach Woodson has done over a 6 year period with the Hawks. That is a hard job and he has done very well, given the degree of difficulty!!! Again, I live in a town, that has a football team, the Skins, whose coach and team has been terrible and we are not as hard on him as you are on Woodson. He deserves it, Woody does not.

Finally, that is why I agree with Russ, you are unfair, and if anyone should be replaced it’s you!!! In fact, I wish AJC ran a Poll; here are a couple of questions: should Jeff Schultz be fired? If AJC could get a top writer or whatever your position is, should he be replaced? Who thinks Jeff is fair and balanced in his coverage of coach Woodson. I am done with asking you to be fair, I have moved to wanting you fired!!! I wonder if the Mayor, Shirley Franklin, Mr. Brave, Hank Aaron, Mr. Hawk, Dominique, and the honorable Andrew Young feel the same as allot of us that you should be fired or at a minimum extremely unfair in your writing about coach. I am the “official band leader” for you being removed completely or to another part of the paper at a minimum. Again, I would feel a little different if you criticized other parts of the organization equally, then I could conclude it was not personal.

Kudos to Russ, Derek, Mitch!!! Remember the Big 3 (Boston, Cleveland and Orlando) are really, really good. The Hawks could win 50 plus games this season and be better than last year and still lose in the 2nd round and the season still be a whopping success and coach should get a ticker tape parade, c’mon who are we kidding, it was not long ago we were the Clippers and now we are like a Utah or better!!!

The reality is this team is in big trouble, just like in 2000 (before Vick) & 2007 (After Vick). That just proves the star power that Vick brought.

Look at the Panthers, for an example. The spotted the Falcons 3 games, by starting 0-3 and now if they beat the Dolphins tonight, the Falcons fall to 3rd place in the division after they lose to the Giants.

By the Falcons losing to the Giants, they fall behind Philly, Carolina, Green Bay, Giants, Cowboys and could be tied with San Fran for the 2 wild card spots.

This guy is not NFL material.

Matt Ryan is the next Trent Edwards: That is, Edwards had a nice first season where he got everybody’s hopes up, and then the rest of the league figured him out and Edwards was never able to recover. Buffalo is going to have to cut Edwards and draft another QB becuase Edwards is no longer a usable QB in the NFL. Same thing is going to happen — IS HAPPENING — with Matt Ryan. Let’s called it The Delayed Bust syndrome.

I dont understand the BLOGGERS here. Matty Ryan just had last year one of the greatest seasons ever for the 1st year qb (from an intelligence perspective NOT according to touchdowns and yards). His IQ at QB is beyond that of a genious. To culminate his brilliance at quarterback, Ryan won the rookie of the year award in a landslide vote. Now all of a sudden, people, most of the bloggers and fans alike are treating Ryan as though his last name is Leaf. Its riduculous because what I took from his rookie year is that he is headed for the hall of fame once his playing career is over. Thats all you really could gather from last year. He guided his team to an 11-5 record after the Mike Vick/Bobby Petrino nightmares. He comes into his second year and storms out of the gate 4-1. If you freeze that moment in time his record was 15-6 one of the all-time great records starting out at quarterback for a young player. Then he hits the WALL, which is also referred to as the Sophmore slump. Now everybody is writing him off and acting as though he is a complete bust ala Ryan Leaf. Ive got news for you guys and gals. When Matt Ryan comes out of his slump he will regain his standing and stature as the best quarterback currently in the association. Just be patient folks, he return to his all-pro, all-world, hall of fame calibre. Its just a matter of time but you will notice it. In closing, Matt Ryan will win the MVP award of the league next season. Period.

Vick’s passer ratings by season: 62.7, 81.6, 69, 78, 73.1, 75.7, 39.6 for a career rating of 75.6.

Matt Ryan’s Passer ratings by season: 87.7, 78.8 for a career rating of 84.1.

Listen, I get that Matt Ryan is struggling right now but if you’re going to compare him to someone, at least picks someone with better stats. Ryan WORST season (which could easily get better if he turns it around) is less than 3 points less than Vick’s BEST season.

Matt Ryan’s struggle started the last 3 regular season games of last season and the play-off game, so it is clearly a pattern and not a slump. matt Ryan’s lack of arm strength limits the offense. See it for what it is, Matt Ryan s not that bad, but he is also not as great as you people thought he was. he will never be a Payton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, or Joe Flacco, hahahaha. He may be and adequate NFL QB but he is not Super Star. He cannot carry a team. He can only manage a game against subpar competition.

Just so you know.

Here’s a detailed QB comparison between Payton Manning, Matt Ryan and Troy Aikman. All were 1st overall Draft Picks. This comparison details their first two NFL seasons…

Year Rec Att Comp % Yds TD Int Rate
Manning 1998 3-13 326 575 56.7% 3739 26 28 71.2
Ryan 2008 11-5 265 434 61.1% 3440 16 11 87.7
Aikman 1989 0-11 155-293 52.9% 1749 9 18 55.7

2nd year Career Rating

Manning 1999- 13-3 331-533 62.1% 4135 28 15 90.7 95.7
Ryan 2009 5-4 178-298 59.7% 2008 14 12 78.8 84.1 (Through 9 games)
Aikman 1990 7-8 226-399 56.6% 2579 11 18 66.6 81.6

Ryan won double-figure games in his first season
It took ’til year two for Manning
It took ’till year 4 for Aikman

Aikman had a HOF WR and RB in Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith
Manning has/had likely HOF WRs in Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, plus Eg James/J Addai
Ryan has a very good WR in Roddy White and HOF TE Tony Gonzalez- Good RB in Turner

Aikman had a very good-to-great defense
Manning’s defenses have been so-so to good, Once in a while better than good
Ryan’s defenses are still building- not nearly a finished product

Manning and Aikman won Suber Bowls. That’s where Ryan wants to get. He will need help. Ryan will also need to turn the corner in in soph season in the NFL, and do it soon.

Let’s see how this plays out.

GuyRichardson

Jimmy Hullender: You are wrong about Ryan. Ryan has not regressed at all. You are deceived. Did not Ryan not start the year 4-1. Is that a regression? You are not being fair in judging Ryan because there is enough blame to go around. Ryan has been receiving an enormous amount of pressure and his O-line is not giving him enough time to find open receivers. Thus the interceptions or picks. Secondly, the play calling has been atrotious over the last four games, which to me, is inexplicable. Thirdly, there have been injuries…Turner and Norwood in particular. Fourthly there have been a few dropped balls AND the wide receivers are not getting enough separation to free themselves open. When Ryan DOES have time to throw, the receivers are covered like a blanket. THIS IS NOT ENTIRELY RYANS FAULT. Ryan should get probably at least 50% of the blame though because has made a ton of poor throws. Add it up in my opinon Ryan has not regressed; he is simply in a slump. If Ryan comes out of the slump this week against the Giants and if the receivers get open in their routes and catch the football, then we should and will win every remaining game on the slate. Final record:
12-4. Translation: Imrpovement over last years 11-5 record.

ThunderboltPatterson

Stafford sux: you are exactly right. Losing Brooking was devastating because he has led the Falcons in tackles every year he has been with us. Secondly, we lost James Foxworth and Lawyer Malloy, both standout defensive specialists. Those three losses have proved too difficult to overcome. That is the reason why we have a 5-4 record. Its true Ryan has been pathetic, but had we had those defensive players from last year our record would be at least 8-1 or 9-0. Ryan will soon be enshrined in footballs hall of fame in Canton, Ohio just as soon as his playing days are over. But until then he will struggle to find his rhythm again.

I am guilty of doubting Matt Ryan. Some people say it is his arm that is the problem, then explain Drew Brees. His decision making is what has driven me crazy lately. Even though he is different than Vick, the one similarity I see are costly mistakes mixed in with flashes of brilliance. I do tend to forget that Brees, Rivers, and few others struggled their first few years. Brees looked like he was a complete bust at one time. The one thing no one can knock Matt Ryan for is his work ethic. If he makes a bone head play come Sunday, I am sure I will have some really nice things to say about him like I did last Sunday. I am not sure what the future will bring. I hope all the experts are right about him. We fans are suppose to have patience, but patience and passion usually do not come together. I know we have holes to fill, but that does not make me want to look beyond this year. After the loss on Sunday I felt like our season was done. A win this week would get rid of a lot of those thoughts. Last year after the Bears game I told my son after the kick “These Birds are For Real”. I have not seen a game this year that has made me feel that again. I am yet to see them come out with the intensity this year that they did against the Saints and Panthers at home last year. We can say schedule or what ever, but so far what I have seen is a very average team. Even in the playoff loss last year, until the third down converstion where Arizona put the game away, I felt like they had a shot. This team this year has not shown that. If each player just elevates his play just a notch, and plays every play with from whistle to whistle with max intensity, and they lose….atleast us fans can still believe that they have a shot. And we still have a team we can believe in.

Hey i think Daryl is kinda right the falcons are in the hunt but I’ve been watching the Falcons since 1980 and they have a way of blowing it so we hope that this season they turn things around but if they don’t I won’t be surprised.

Its really good to see that SOME people are starting to realize that Ryan isn’t as good as they thought he was.

I pointed this out a long time ago….and everyone knows it.
