So what’s Lane Kiffin going to talk about now?
Lane Kiffin has done a lot of talking since being hired. Is he going to be tongue-tied now?
This should not be construed as celebrating the fact that three young men at Tennessee just irreparably damaged their football futures and possibly their lives with an unbelievably dumb decision. But a lot of people are laughing at Lane Kiffin right now.
Back on national letter-of-intent day in February, Kiffin, the new Tennessee coach, entertained Volunteer fans with a story about one of the team’s hot new recruits, Nu’Keese Richardson (video below). It seems Richardson, who also was being heavily recruited by Florida, was receiving cell phone calls from Gators coach Urban Meyer while he was taking his visit on the Tennessee campus.
Kiffin told the crowd at signing day that such a move was illegal and Meyer was “cheating.” Problem is, it wasn’t illegal and Meyer wasn’t cheating. That’s one of several times Kiffin has gotten into trouble for something he said since being hired.
That adds some irony to what happened early Thursday morning. Richardson was one of three Tennessee football players arrested and charged with armed robbery after trying to rob people outside of a convenience store at 2 a.m. All three players were prized recruits: Richardson, a freshman wide receiver from Pahokee, Fla.; Janzen Jackson, a freshman defensive back from Lake Charles, La.; Michael Edwards, a freshman defensive back from Cleveland.
We can’t predict how this case unfolds. But everybody who has been waiting to jump on Kiffin for something just got their wish. He actually has done a solid coaching job this season, given what he had to work with. The Vols are 5-4, drilled Georgia, 45-19, and had narrow losses to the top two teams in the nation, Florida and Alabama.
But this will be a distraction unlike any Kiffin has dealt with so far. Even if this was a random act by three teenagers, many will ask now if it’s a reflection of the coach’s first recruiting class or his program. Fair? Not at all. But when you come into a high-profile job in the SEC and seem intent on stirring things up, be prepared for what’s going to happen when something goes wrong.

QUICK UPDATE: Tennessee assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron said this at a Knoxville Quarterback Club meeting two weeks ago, when asked about recruiting tough guys: “We’re not angels and we’re not going to recruit a bunch of angels.”

This is bad for football in general. I think a lot of people feel that football players are above the law. This is also terrible for the SEC. I would hate to be in the UT President’s or AD’s shoes right now.
The charges are so egregious that Kiffin will have no choice but to suspend the players accused in the alleged incident.

Good ole’ Janzen Jackson. He was the #1 safety in the country last year, a 5 star recruit that had been committed to LSU for 11 months. Out of the blue, he doesn’t sign w/ LSU on signing day. Well of all places he signs at Tenn the next day. Seemed to be a habit of that kind of activity going on there.

It is too bad! I’m not a Lane Kiffen fan, but you hate to see this happen anywhere in collgeg footbal. You have to try and give these kids a chance, and remember though they took a player a few years ago whom had sexually assaulted a Florida Coed on his recruiting trip there. My recollection is that UF, UGA, AU, all dropped him like a hot potato, but UT smiled and signed him. You can’t fix stupid.

Here’s what happened: One day prior, Kiffin had bragged about Ogeron, and how his team had no arrests this year. I bet Nukeese heard that and said, that ain’t like coach, telling the truth, I better help him keep his lying streak alive. What in the world are these players thinking! They have a free ride to play college ball and possibly make millions in the NFL. Why would they rob people, oh wait, turns out one of the players was suspended for a drug test failure. They robbed for money so they could buy drugs. What a pack of Wild Boyz kiffin is brining in. Sucks for their future, but it is justice.

The one report indicated that the hoodies, which were worn during the robbery were found in the back seat of the car. So, apparently the WILD BOYZ decided, in the euphoria of their post-robbery celebration, to go all Kiffin and took of their shirts. It absoultely is the coaches fault. 18 year old kids, especially those that may have questionable backgrounds need structure and rules, and they need to learn morals and values and how to be responsible MEN, unfortunately they are coached by a BOY. Flying around in helicopters, making rap videos shirtless with chains, shout outs from Lil Wayne, encouriging “tough guy” mentality, that all created a culture that lead to this. Say what you want about Urban Meyer but I have been close and I know people who still are close to the Florida program and his #1 priroity is teaching these boys to be men. See if any one of these three are nearly as remorseful or embarrassed as Spikes was about the eye gouge. Spikes lost his cool, these players are bad people, BIG difference.

This kind of behavior will not stop until coaches change their focus and start enforcing some discipline among their players. Richt’s recruiting of entitled individuals and his lack of team discipline have finally caught up with him. Kiffen is heading in the same direction, but he is moving a little faster.

Any SEC, or high school, coach better wait longer than 10 months before bragging about no arrests. If he’s gonna’ take some credit for no arrests, should he not take a little credit for 3?

Art Vandalay, get off your high horse. You expect a coach to instill all of that into a kid in less that six months time. Becareful that Urban does not hurt himself when he falls off the pedestal you have place him upon.

I’m always amazed when something like this happens at any school.
First fans of other SEC schools start referring to “Thug,” U, when the fact is unless you are Vanderbilt , your school recruits from the same demographic pool as any other.
Second is the glee some fans exhibit when an incident like this happens at another school. The tragedy is the wasted opportunity these kids have thrown away. In particular Janzen Jackson who appeared to be headed for a First Round draft pick.
