[...] Just one problem with that, argues AJC sports columnist Jeff Schultz. You see, if Georgia were a professional team, it would make perfect sense to give up on an apparently lost season midway through and start looking at younger prospects, getting them into the game, and making plans for the future. Happens all the time in professional sports. All professional sports. But Georgia is not a professional team. Georgia is a college team. And some of the players on Georgia’s team are seniors. Some of these seniors will play in the NFL, but some will never play another down of football for as long as they live after they leave Georgia. When you give up and start making plans for next season, it is monumentally unfair to the guys who are not going to be around next season.
I accept Coach Richt's logic about why he is staying with Joe Cox, however, I was in Jacksonville and putting Logan Gray into that game while backed up on our 10 yard line against the number one defensive team in the nation was right up there with the most inexcusable coaching decisions ever made. It may not have been quitting(?)in that game, but it was clearly stupid and completely unfair to Logan Gray AND Joe Cox. Fortunately, Coach Richt realized right away how stupid it was when Brandon Spikes walked into our end zone. The good news is it only put icing on an already embarassing contest. NOW, to the best thing witnessed in the last 2 seasons. In the Tennesse Tech Game, it appears Coach Richt regained some semblance of DISCIPLINE!!! The players went about their assignments and duties as they should and did not celebrate every tackle, catch, block, touchdown, or other decent play like they owned the world, but rather returned to the huddle or sideline like they should to get ready for the next play. Seeing this provided more hope for the future than anything I've seen for the past 18 games. What a relief to see an end to the "Look at Me" mentality and players taking more of a team approach. Keep it going Dawgs and you will restore the UGA pride!

Ed,

I can assume by your comments that you've never played a sport before and probrably never been involved with athletics. Seniors deserve to finish out the seasons starting if they are the best players at the positions. Evidently, you must spend a lot of time in the weight room, watching film, practicing, doing agility drills and reviewing and grading film on the players. Do you spend 30-40 hours a week with these players....OH YOU DON'T..YOU ONLY SPEND 2 1/2 HOURS A WEEK WATCHING THEM...Sorry but how in the hell do you know who's better that the coaches who spends 50-60 hours a week with the players reviewing their strengths and weaknesses. However, you could probrably qualify as an expert on whining because i can tell you do that very good.

Richt says he owes it to his seniors. No sir, you owe it to the returning players and incoming recruits to make sure that they are getting prepared to win the next possible SEC title in Dec. of 2010. Joe Cox does not help to that end. He will not be the QB next year. Play the guy now who your gut tells you will be at the helm in 2010. If Cox truly is the best guy you have to win in the remaining 4 games....we are in trouble for the next 2 years at least. If AM or ZM are not good enough to be the best option to win now based on talent alone after what we have seen from Cox.....Lord have mercy.
