SEC should consider suspending Florida’s Spikes

Here's Brandon Spikes presumably flexing his finger before another eye-gouge.

This shouldn’t distract from the fact Georgia was outplayed and outclassed in every way in Jacksonville – nor from the fact that the Bulldogs committed four personal fouls themselves and have devolved into one of the nation’s most-penalized and least disciplined teams.

But SEC officials should look seriously at suspending Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes.

By now, you’ve probably heard about or seen video of Spikes’ attempted eye-gouging of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in the third quarter of  Saturday’s game.

If not, here it is.

Take a look and then I’ll be back.

(UPDATE: The previous video has been removed by YouTube for copyright issues. This is another version — not as clear but clear enough.)

Pretty nasty, huh?

Now, I’m sure this sort of thing happens all the time at the bottom of the pile in the NFL. I’m guessing it also happens sometimes at the bottom of the pile in SEC games, particularly with players who project to the NFL (Spikes). But there really is no excuse for it.

Spikes might claim that his attack was retaliation for twice getting his helmet knocked off by Bulldogs players earlier in the game. But trying to jam one’s fingers into another guy’s eyes is WAY over the line.

So far, there has been no reaction from SEC officials. They tend to look at these things on Mondays, and I’m sure I was one of a hundred media members seeking a statement Sunday. The hope is that commissioner Mike Slive treats this at least as seriously as he does coaches who whine about officiating.

Florida coach Urban Meyer called Spikes a “very emotional player,” adding, “If that’s the case, I will have a very serious talk with him.”

Dogs coach Mark Richt said on his Sunday night conference call that he hadn’t seen the video: “I did have someone bring it to my attention that they thought that might have happened or whatever, but I don’t want to make any kind of comment on that particular incident.”

I’ll update this late if the SEC comes out with a statement.

Yes Jill, spiting in someones face and someone trying to blind someone is the same thing. If someone spit in his face they should face some discipline, but trying to rake someones eyes is pathetic.

I saw the play on during the TV replay on Saturday – and was surprised nothing was said by the announcers – it was so obvious, blatant and unnecessary. It reminds me of the Darwin Holt incident @ Alabama a long time ago. After reviewing the film, Florida should have immediately suspended him for the rest of the year.

Any player from any team that participates in that type of activity should be punished. Doesn’t matter if it retaliation or not. Stop trying to paint Florida or UGA as thugs. This was an individual. If there were issues with UGA players in these type of activities, then suspend them too.

Looks can be deceiving. Let me ask you this, why didn’t the rb act upset if this was so? If someone were “gouging” your eye you might be a little peeved. The rb in question was interviewed, no mention of eye gouging. No missing eyeball, no scratch marks, no “yeah uf won but that player spikes is a dirty player.” The eyes are not that far from the mask, spikes has long fingers, do you not think a guy who can bench 400 lbs couldn’t do major damage if he wanted to? What you have is circumstantial evidence and that is it. Yes, there are fans, media guys ect. who have convicted this player but no hard evidence to the fact. Did it look suspicious sure, but was it conclusive? No. I’m surprised no one has yet asked the rb what happened. I would at least like to here his version before a rush to judgement. Some of you can’t tell a nose scratch from a nose pick.

I’m sure stuff like that goes on all the time underneath piles. The difference here is that there is unmistakable video evidence of it happening, and the SEC cannot look the other way or in any way appear to condone it, lest it lead to more of the same on the football field. The SEC’s hands are tied and they have to make an example of Spikes. It’s like getting a speeding ticket–everyone does it, but if you’re the one that gets caught, you still have to pay. At any rate, this was uncalled for by Spikes and if nothing else will hurt his draft position, as he may have anger management issues.

Watched the tape on ESPN and this is not about Georgia or Florida, this is not about aggressive tackling. This is about extreme thugish behavior, he needs to be suspended by the SEC for at least 2 games, if not then what could you be suspended for? This is actually worse in my opinion than the Boise State incident and to be honest Florida should suspend him before the SEC does, while I dont think that is going to happen. Trust me if nothing is done then I would not want to be a Florida running back next year! This game has not been very competetive for a couple of years, but we tune in to watch the side show, which I believe will only get uglier if the coaches and the players dont get

That game was one of the worst examples of unsportsman like unnecessary late hits and violence that I’ve every witnessed and UGA started it from the beginning of the game. It’s almost like the dawgs spent their whole week off practicing late hitting, going for the head, helmet take downs, and eye-gouging. Florida papers report at least three Gators were treated for eye-gouging injuries, including Spikes and Tebow. I’m not condoning Spike’s actions if that is indeed what he was doing, but the dawgs played with unsportsmanlike abandon from kickoff and the Gators had to respond.

The rest of the year?!?!?! Come on, folks! What Spikes did was despicable, but it is not a rest of the year offense. The guy from Oregon lost his mind and tried to go after fans up in the stands. He had to be restrained by security. Brandon Spikes had his hair pulled to the point that his helmet came off, had his helmet ripped off a second time, and then had a guy take a shot at his helmetless head. Florida’s defensive players were held on every play (including a headlock on Jermaine Cunningham on UGA’s first touchdown). Nick Williams took a ferocious cheap shot at Tim Tebow well after the handoff early in the game. Tebow was tackled by the facemask at least three times with no flags. Bush league play by UGA set the tone for this game. Spikes was stupid to react in the way that he did. He should sit, but it should be for one game and not the rest of the ssason.

Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount was suspended for the year for punching a player who had just shoved him from behind, and at least Blount was man enough to be facing the guy when he punched him. Spikes went out of his way to reach down and gouge the eyes of a player who had just been tackled, with the whistle blown and play OVER. There is absolutely NOTHING Spikes could have been doing within the confines of the rules of football.
Coach Meyer should suspend him for the year, and if he does not…if he just gives him some BS “stern talking to” and only suspends him for the Vandy or the Florida International game…then Coach Meyer is not the man I give him credit for.
And Florida fans should be the ones taking the lead in this matter. UF is an outstanding university, and you’re BETTER than this.

He was caught–on tape–sticking his fingers into Ealey’s eyes. There is absolutely no way to justify his actions. And as much as you’d like it to, an eye-for-an-eye doesn’t work here folks. Spikes was caught being a punk and he needs to be punished for it. Has nothing to do with how poorly UGA played or whether or not the UGA players were playing rough as well. He. Was. Caught. Stop trying to justify his brutish behavior.

For all the gators who claim that their players were intentionally eye-gouged, post video. I did not see any intentional eye gouges as I watched the game at home. Unfortunately we are seeing more and more of this type thug attitude in college football. The only way you are going to stop this type of play is to follow the example of the Oregon coach kick them off the team. While yes this is an emotionally played game. However to allow some player that appears to be attempting to put a players eye out goes way beyond emotion it is out and out thug act. That should result in his dismissal from the team. As a fan of Georgia I think the Georgia Football Program is a disgrace to find this team with one of the highest penalized teams in Division 1. Frankly the Georgia player who yanked Spikes helm off should have been kicked out of the game or least been pulled out and had his ass chewed out.

If it was a UGA player, I would hope the SEC would suspend him. You don’t risk permanently putting someone’s eyes out – that is crazy. If any player, on any team, is caught doing this they should be kicked off the team for the rest of the year, including my beloved Dawgs. I’m sure this will make Dog fans/rival lunatics and apologists feel better that they can take attention away from a pathetic performance on the field.

Why isn’t Ealey making a big deal out of this or UGA coaches/players? Probably because Spikes was reacting to something bush league Ealey did. Two sides to every story folks especially bitter rival fans with hate for all things UF. Everybody keeps talking about Spikes’s helmet getting “ripped off”. Please post video of the “ripping”. I saw his helmet get “knocked” off a couple of times. That happens sometimes, especially to a player like Spikes who sticks his head in hard on tackles (and by “sticks his head in” I mean he goes in hard like a linebacker should). If he’s tired of his hat coming off, he should cut his hair and get a better chin strap.

Also, nobody seems to mention the running play in the first quarter when Spikes ran up and hit Ealey in the face with his helmet after the play had been whistled dead for false start and everybody but Spikes stopped running.

Guy’s dirty. You can’t defend it. He should be suspended.

The dirty play by Spikes is terribly wrong, and it should be dealt with very harshly. Both Gator and Dawg Fans do not condone dirty play. It will be handled properly by Coach Meyer.
The beatdown was great, but the Dawgs sure can execute their silly dance.

I won’t post any more video, but I will post the score. 41-17. Florida stomps GA again and again and again. At least Spikes was man enough to retaliate after the inbred GA thugs who cannot tackle ripped his helmet off twice and tried to decapitate Brandon James on the sideline and late hit Tebow. Don’t hate. You lost to the best team in football.

I’m sorry, but if Brandon Spikes is lying on top of you and “tries to gouge” your eyes, you are not going to pop up from that unfazed and participate in the very next play. Spikes is a big, tough dude, and he pretty easily could injure anybody he felt like injuring.

I have no idea what Spikes was doing in that pile, but if he actually intended to injure Ealey, Ealey would have been actually injured. All this discussion about Spikes’s intent is just conjecture. You can’t suspend someone on conjecture. Whining about this just makes us look like even bigger wusses than we looked on Saturday.

If you want to suspend him than do it. Do it for the rest of the season. Florida would have probably beaten you MORE soundly if he weren’t playing (if you recall he hasn’t played in at least the majority of the last two wins. However, that was caught on tape, the others weren’t…so you get lucky. I appreciate the poodle fan above who said suspend him and lets move on…but to stop with the whining. If Meyer suspends him, for a game, you will whine its not enough and its Vandy, if he suspends him for 2 games, it won’t be enough, the season MIGHT make you feel better about stinking it up on the field. But ultimately, with or without him, you still lost SOUNDLY.

If ANYONE gets suspended for this play, I would like for you to agree, that if there were systematic complaints (and actual injuries) that you would support a full investigation of UGA’s alleged eye-gouging. If not YOU my friend are a typical leg-humper.

The man should be thrown out of college football. A 2 game or rest of the season susupension is far to easy on the individual for this kind of behavior. That being said any player not wearing some form of eye protection in football in this day and age is just plain stupid. It’s akin to not wearing an athletic cup.

Spikes was not snapping his helmet. Brandon Boykin had his helmet torn off prior to Spikes being torn off and it was shown on TV and nothing said nor done. I don’t understand why Spikes wasn’t snapping his helmet. After his helmet came off the first time they showed closeups of him before plays and you could see the strap unsnapped. I felt like Spikes was trying to get others called for his helmet coming off or it didn’t fit. Either reason was stupid as he could have had a head injury. I also saw the gouging was could not believe it wasn’t called. The game was emotional and players need to step back and play football not stoop to that. If it was a GA player I would want him suspended too. Spikes needs to be suspended.

NC Dawg

If my recollection is correct, it all seemed start on one of the first offensive plays by GA. Either the play was stopped by the officials or it was a play for no gain, but Spikes threw a cheap shot forearm to Ealey’s helmet and Ealey went after Spikes in retaliation. Spikes then waited until Ealey was down under a pile of tacklers later in the game and could not retaliate to go after him again (the gouging incident). For those of you who have the game recorded look and see if you see the incident I am refering to in the first couple of plays. This first cheap shot by Spikes was before he lost his helmet the first time, and GA was called for a personal foul.

Gator Rob

What an overreaction. Spikes didn’t even hurt the guy. And if you don’t think this happens at the bottom of the pile of every game you’re kidding yourself. The UGA players were taking cheap shots the entire game. What is the SEC supposed to do? Review every play in every game from every angle to see if there was anything that looked shady and assess penalties? That’s ridiculous.
This is just an excuse to take a shot at UF since no one can seem to do it on the field.

It was definitely dirty by Spikes. That being said, the whole game was chippy and I thought there was a lot of extracurricular stuff going on after plays especially by Ealey. Does that justify eye gouging? No, but anyone who does not think UGA was hitting late, shoving and jawing was not watching the game. I watched Saturday and again on Sunday morning (rebroadcast) and it was clear that UGA wanted to establish a rough tempo from the start. They tried to out physical UF and it did not work.

First of all, I’m a Tech grad and fan. Second of all, Spikes on niether play had his chin strap buckled. That’s a bunch of crap that he got his helmet torn off. He’s got the hair thing going and he doesn’t buckle the strap, and for sure the 2nd time, nobody even touched his headgear.

Next, why does ESPN only talk about the Spikes incident? In the first half alone, I counted 6 possible late hits from FL that were not called. Richt was letting the refs have it the entire time, which he never does.

I love Tebow, but FL will get theirs this year. All you front running Gator fans get ready, you will not leave Atlanta undefeated (if you even enter Atlanta undefeated!!).

It is a sad commentary on the state of UGA football that our supposed fans are now all fired up about this eye-gouging thing.

We need to be hanging our heads in shame at our team’s performance. Furthermore, it is somewhat ironic that fans of the most undiciplined team in the SEC are now jumping on this bandwagon.

It’s kind of like Charles Manson saying at a parole hearing – ” hey, I’m not such a bad guy…did you see what that Dahmer guy did?”

Honestly, I think that it is something which goes on in every pile…we just happened to catch this on tape. If so, then the appropriate action needs to be taken, and it will.

But, for Georgia fans to focus on this just shows how much we don’t want to admit how bad we are….lets find something else to distract from the real issue here.

I saw a couple off things we did to Tebow in ‘07 that were very questionable – kneeing him in the head when he was down – for example. THAT was fine with the UGA crowd because UGA won. Now this eye gouging thing is some kind of national crime…..proof that UGA is always disrespected…which is what our fans truly believe.

The reason we get no respect is because we haven’t earned any. We won SEC titles when our primary foes were in a weakend state, and now that they are on their way back up, we don’t want to accept the fact that our coaches and team needs to man up and start winning. We are such persecuted martyrs…….whine, whine whine….i’m so tired of our fans complaining about the way the world is against us. Most good coaches rally their players around such a theme.

Our coaches just buy them some new lingere and hope it “adds some juice.”

I think that we need to petition the SEC to ban UGA football from the conference until our coaching staff can get its act together. We are an embarassment and our fans are delusional.

Did anyone else feel like the first personal foul call against us when we supposedly “ripped” of Spikes helmet was bogus? Look at the tape, he is leaning all the way over and our guys hand barely touches the bottom of the helmet and it pops off. Judging by how many times BS’s helmet comes off during every game I am thinking his pile of dreads had more to do with this than our guy doing something illegal. That penalty really killed the momentum on our opening drive. Not saying it’s why we lost of course, but it goes to a list of things that were frustrating to watch saturday.

He kept trying to blow it out but it was one of those that just sort of hangs on. I was’t just helping him out. That’s all. You folks are making a mountain of a big booger.

Are you serious? Not conclusive?? That is about the most obvious piece of CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE I have ever seen. I am sure that Ealey had a bug on his face or a gatorade mustache and BS was trying to clean it up for him….John you are in complete denial….

To those that say that it probably did not happen because Ealey did not mention it it postgames interviews make me laugh. How about Ealey having enough class not to call out someone like that in an interview, just let the tape speak for itself. One trash move by BS does not desrve another by Washan. Once a criminole, always a criminole. I’m watching this game (on tv this time). In the FIRST QUARTER you’ve got a face-mask (when the player was already out of bounds), a late hit on Tebow (that even the tv guys are shocked about), B Spikes helmet ripped off. That F$U taint is gonna stick to Richt & subsequently, UGAg.
Florida receiver David Nelson stared across the field, saw all the Georgia players jumping up and down, hooting and hollering after a touchdown and thought, “Here we go again.” The top-ranked Gators responded pretty much the same way they did last season — by pounding the Bulldogs. [ESPN]

YOU KNOW WHAT THE SEC OFFICIALS SHOULD DO? They should re-watch EVERY single SEC game every week using all camera angles looking specifically for missed penalties like this. Then, they should go suspend players for penalties they committed but weren’t called on the field.

Wait, that’s stupid. You can’t do this. I’m not condoning what Spikes did; it was a dirty play. But you can’t suspend him. Do you know how many dirty plays happen per game? You are opening up a Pandora’s box by suggesting acting on Spikes’ play. Let it be. If it wasn’t called on the field, you can’t penalize him now.

JS – I am no Gator fan – but the UGA holier than thou act is a bit sickening. UGA players are consistently taking cheap shots against the opposing team. Only this year when their is an emphasis on this behavior do they get penalized for it (Oklahoma St game). To say that UGA wasn’t trying to hurt Spikes throughout the game is disingenuous at best. Really? You’ve got to be kidding.

Spikes helmet came off cause his chinstrap wasn’t buttoned. If you look closely you can see it flopping around while he was calling coverage. All I see is the FB blocking him and it coming off then the RT hittin him in the noggin with his helmet. I DON’T see a dirty play there at all.

Having played football for many years I know there is alot of nastiness that does occur and if the world could see it blatantly every game they would be horrified. But Spikes got caught. Whether it was justified or not isn’t gonna matter. If a UGA player had been exposed doing the same thing as clearly as Spikes, I would want him punished.

Everyone needs to understand that Ealey is not going to say anything after the game about the incident. He knows that the jaw jacking and dirty play was going on both sides, UGA had no choice but to do it trying to gain an edge. A couple of things I find interesting about this play. 1) It was not a pile that alot of people like to say. Spikes was obviously the last one there and on top and was easily visible in what he did. 2) why the heck did no other UGA player come to Ealy’s defense. SR vs. Frosh. #71 watched what happened and did nothing about it. UGA can gather up PFs after PFs, but if there is a time in whinch one needed to occur (this was the time), nothing happened. 3) who really cares. Spikes was wrong and needs to be suspended, but he was also good at hiding from the refs and lucky not to be caught. Unlike UGA where they do stupid crap like this right in front og the refs. I am a UGA fan, but I find the style of play by these DAWGS as an embarrassment. UGA went into this game trying to play in your face with physicality and tried to intimidate the Gators. Well, UGA now whines like babies because UF B!tc& slapped UGA back.

Steve, not sure you are correct there. Swinging and gouging are two entirely different events. One may see what BS did as attempt to gouge but another my see it as inadvertantly getting his hands inside the face mask, you don’t know intent. When a player swings at another player you know the intent is to hit that player and if he misses, too bad. Not saying that BS was not wrong.

Seriously after the first altercation between Spikes and Ealy in the first qt, there should have been some ejections there. The refs lost control of the game by allowing the the players a little more freedom to play. If an ejection (one player from each team) would have occured, it more than likely would have stopped the BS. UGA was playing awfully dirty in that game. If anything blame the coaches. Richt might have started it a few years ago with whole team running on the field following a touchdown, last year Meyer made matters worse when he called timeouts at the end of the game being up by so many. Those decisions have turned this rivalry into a war. UGA knew they didn’t stand a chance with stingy defense and high potent attack of the Gators so they tried to out physical Florida and take their minds off the task at hand. It didn’t work, and all it showed was how bad the blood is between these two border rivals.

As one who’s never strapped on a jock in his life (role playing with the wife on Conjugal Wednesdays doesn’t count, does it?) I gotta believe the Spikes eye gouge is being blown somewhat out of proportion.

Football is a rough game (here’s where my never-strapped-on-a-Bike credibility comes under fire) played by aggressive and angry young men. The aggressiver and angrier the better I might add.

Other posters have stated Spikes was probably retaliating for similar transgressions perpetrated against his physical person. Doggone if those after-the-whistle piles don’t get nasty.

I ain’t trying to draw a moral equivalent between a hair pull (or multiple hair pulls) by UGA players and Spikes’ apparent intent to permanenly deprive this UGA kid of 50% of his vision.

Well even if the SEC renders the Gators’ defense Spikes-less for a spell, I expect the likes of Vanderbilt, Florida International and even FSU (talk about a once-storied program on the skids – at least UGA’s got company) won’t give their DC any sleepless nights.

AZ jacket- its not just UGA- take a long look at what has gone on in the SEC this year- qualified? ha! what a joke. If he was “qualified” he would be taking action on the many bad calls that have gone on this year. The only reason he suspended the crew is because he was forced to- the other coachs were yelling loud and clear. He is a wimp and a Urbans boy at best.

CT

Go back and watch the tape. The first cheap shot was on a play that was blown dead for a false start (imagine that). After the whistle, Spikes took a forearm to the head of Ealey and Ealey pushed back. After that, Josh Davis pulled Spikes hair and his helmet came off in the process. Tackling by the hair is legal. When you are an offensive lineman, it’s holding (I would guess). When you do it after the play, it’s a personal foul, which is where Davis got into trouble.

The point is that Spikes started the crap and there’s no accountability for it (so far). Well, unless you count the “strong talking to” that Urban will deliver. This goes back to the first play of last year as well, in my opinion.

That wasn’t the only flagrant act by Spikes that didn’t get called. On Georgia’s first possesion if you look at the penalty against the Dawgs you will notice that Spikes hits Ealey with his helmet and later he tears Ealey helmet off. I know the guy is a great player and plays with a lot of emotion but his play was over the top on Saturday. Yes Coach Richt should be very, very upset that once again even if one of his players even looks like they commit a foul it gets called but the officials tend to look the other way when it comes to the Dawgs opponent.

Why would I be disgusted about how the SEC is run based on what you say. If it is determined that Spikes was wrong then he should be punished. You don’t know me so how can you say what you just said. You don’t know the SEC commissioner but because he is a Tech Alum he has to be biased. You are upset because your team is not performing and that is the way it is. You are full of conspiricy and cannot face the reality that your team has problems. Don’t get frustrated and call me names. As far as I am concerned both Fla and UGA can get beat every week. I am not a fan of either. I am not happy with the Tech fans who get on here and talk smack because it is not necessary. Tech has been beat once and they go their clock cleaned, no ones fault but the team. they did not play well. I am not going to blame the ACC or the officials. I spent 25 years officiating in the GHSA and know what it takes to be an official. Mistakes are made. My life does not revolve around what 18 to 21 year old kids do on football field. I enjoy the game of football and love my yellow jackets. I have suffered more that you when it comes to W’s and L’s. This all comes form a 63 year old Tech Alum, retired from 40 years of working for a great company.

Watch coach UM when he is talking about how this isn’t Spikes or the Gators – he’s not looking at the camera but down and to the left!!! We lost the game because FL played much better but FL has lost a lot more if they are smart enough to take their national championship hope blinders off. If Spikes goal is to inflict permanent damage then have him join our armed forces but attempting to blind another athlete isn’t acceptable in sports (other than apparently at the University of Florida).

On behalf of the University Sportsmanship Council and Coach Urban Myer, it gives me great pleasure to nominate Brandon Spikes as the Sportsman of the Year. He embodies all that we believe in here at UF and can only hope that high school athletes throughout the great state of FL hold him up as a role model.

There have been many pundits that have criticized Brandon for attempting to gouge the eyes out of a competitor. Lets keep this in perspective….the competitor did not suffer any long term eye injury and besides, the officials did not call a penalty. Furthermore it’s been reported that the other team had several penalties called against them which clearly justifies Brandon’s the attempt to blind a competitor.

Coach Urban Myer quoted earlier today, “We have been working with Brandon on his eye gouging and spine twisting techniques, but clearly he needs to shield this from the cameras in the future. We are still very proud of him and hope he continues to lead us by example.”

While we are at it, let’s take Attempted Murder off the books, too! I mean, if they didn’t actually murder the person, how can it be wrong?!?! Freaking moron! Anybody with two eyes could see that Spikes was intentional trying to poke Ealey’s eyes out. It’s a shame that Florida fans can’t just say that their player did something he shouldn’t have done and should be punished for it. Frankly, I was embarrassed by the way Georgia players conducted themselves on the field. From the Nick Williams cheap shot of Tebow to the taunting of Tebow after the one (and only) good hit put on Tebow by Rennie Curran (I think it was Dobbs that bent over to taunt him). That kind of stuff is why I think there is a very serious problem with Richt’s program. Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to play good, clean, hard-nosed football.

I frankly do not find this surprising in the least. Remember the cheapshot on Stafford two years ago? That’s Florida’s MO. Its absolutely hysterical how these hypocrites got so bent out of shape over a little excessive celebration. I don’t think excessive celebration can potentially cause blindness.

Regarding the 58 year old Brandon Spikes. I like his toughness. I like his fire. I wish some UGA defenders had that. That being said, he went out with intentional malice and tried to hurt Ealey. Stop making excuses Gators. There is video of this and nothing exists for the “alleged” eye gouges.

Regarding Spikes’ helmet coming off twice. If any of you Gators bothered to look, his chin strap was not fastened and neither hit was dirty. I don’t even believe the personal foul was that bad. If he had his helmet strapped on, it wouldn’t have came off.

As a tech fan, I am appalled at the behavior in the tape. I guess after Meyer’s chat, a suspension of the first half of the Vandy game was decided. Blount misses almost all of the year for his punch and this steaming pile of manure gets a half game suspension for something that could have taken out an eye? It just goes to show the total lack of character required by Meyer to be a part of his team. And the fact that this incident has retaliation for earlier helmet popping fouls actually makes it worse because they were premeditated. I would be less digusted if it had happened ‘in the heat of the moment.’ He should have gone to the NFL after last year, it’s clearly where he belongs. One also wonders what punishment Meyer would call for if somebody had threatened the eye of his timeless crush Tebow…

Urban: He didn’t try to do a Curly on you by holding up a hand to block your gouge move did he?

Spikes is a dirty player. I can give numerous instances in this game alone where he was the instigator of dirty play. 1) 1st quarter – GA had a false start, Ealey went up the middle after the play was blown dead and Spikes hit him with his helmet late. 2) The play where the GA off lineman was called for pulling Spikes helment off, Spikes was trying to push the lineman over the pile backwards causing an injury and on and on. Is he really that good? GA ran up the middle play after play.

AZ Jacket — Plenty of logic. Just because he did not run off the field, pull his helmet off, and stand under a waterfall does not mean Spikes should not be punished. Spikes may not even have gotten his eye. It doesn’t matter if Ealey was hurt or not. Here is the point of logic so pay attention….

The play was over and Spikes intentionally stuck his fingers inside of Ealey’s helmet to try and inflict physical damage to his eyes. He MEANT to do it. Under your logic, I guess the defensive player from Kentucky and the Florida lineman should have been suspended when Tebow got hurt, because he got hurt right.

It is all about intention. There was no “oh it was the speed of the game” or whatever. Spikes could have easily finished the play and exited out of the pile without doing that. He should be suspended for what he intended to accomplish.

Maybe this will help you understand….If someone tries to shoot the president with intent to kill him and misses because he is a bad shot do you think he would be arrested?

The answer is yes because he intented harm…The outcome does not determine if one gets punished or not. That my friend, is what is illogical….

In his book, Browns Town 1964 (the story of the Cleveland Browns last NFL Championship), Terry Pluto recounts how Jim Brown routinely bit the fingers (and drew bllod) of any player who tried to gouge his eyes. Sounds like a plan! If we can’t beat them, we can eat them! (Where is Mike Tyson when you need him?)
But seriously folks, we need new coaches. I’ve been doing a lot more Red & Black bleeding lately than I ever thought I would! At this point, I really think Mark Richt should either offer to resign or dismiss every member of his coaching staff except Rodney Garner. To keep him (and his considerable talent for recruiting our home-grown players), Richt should offer him whatever assistant coaching position he wants.
Damon Evans’ seat should also be red hot, but Michael Adams would have to turn up that flame, and he won’t. (Since he disparaged Coach Dooley, I have had no use for Adams.I will give him credit, however, for heeding the Atlanta big dogs and firing Donnan.) Evans is paid far too much.
There is just no excuse for our having been beaten to a pulp, time and again, as we have been this year. We’ll be lucky to show well against Auburn, Kentucky and Tech. We may well lose all three of those games. If we lose two of the three, Richt won’t have to offer to resign.
I’m no fan of Kiffin’s, and I despise UT, but he has taken charge in a way Richt has not done for three seasons. I don’t care if Muschamp is in the ACC or any other conference. Let’s get him back in Athens. Tech was wise to go to an Erk Russell disciple. Maybe we should too.

This UGA fan thinks any player caught in this situation should be suspended indefinitely. To speculate on whether it is retaliation is missing the point (is murder ok if it is in retaliation for murder)? I consider this offense much worse than anything Michael Vick did. That said, I think Florida’s defense can carry them all the way with or without Spikes.

First let me start by stating that I am not a fan of either university’s football program.

The half game suspension is a joke. The coach is obviously more interested in winning games than in building the character of his players. Hopefully the SEC will do more since there is visual evidence in this case and no one can deny that it really happened. A full game suspension should be the minimum in this case.

Based on the logic I’ve read on this blog from the Gators, Meyer should’ve given him a full game suspension, but only if he actually injured Ealey. Morons! Let me ask this – How is this any different from Marcus Vick stomping on a player’s leg after a play a few years back?? No different in my mind. Spikes should’v have done that. And if Georgia did it beforehand, it doesn’t excuse Spikes’ behavior here. However, Georgia was playing dirty from the beginning of the game. Being an alumni and proud fan of UGA, I give it up to Florida, you were the better team this year, you whooped our a$$, your team was more prepared, and your team had better coaching, etc.

Since the dawgs are the 118th most penalized team (out of 120) and rank 115th in total yards penalized, I would say they are the NCAA experts on what constitutes improper behavior on the football field.

Some of these UF fans are very, very stupid and sad. To those who can see the seriousness of Spikes actions, I respect you. It is not about wins or losses or UF or UGA. This is about a clearly PURPOSEFUL action to injure another player. UF fans want to talk about low hits, etc. That is itself ridiculous. First, with the rate UGA has been penalized this year, we know refs are not shy about throwing flags for personal fouls against them.

Spikes should be suspended for at least two games for what he did. He is and always has been a dirty player. Players are not usually in a hurry to whine about dirty play. But the video reveals a blatant attempt to injure and that should warrant at least a two game suspension.

Making a hit is great…but laying on top of the guy and talking trash for 15 seconds is very pansy-like. I also love how the announcers made no comment on Spikes doing it; even after 3 different views of it. I guess they were too busy gushing over him and Tebow.

I just watched Sportscenter. Coach Meyer suspended Spikes for the 1st half of next weeks game. Wow! What punishment. It just shows what type of coach he really is. Late hits happen in football. A 15 yard penalty is called for it. It does not make it right, but that is the business of the game. What the thug from Florida did was way beyond football. It just shows the class of Floriday.

UF fans are as pathetic as their coach. Meyer shows his true colors. He cares more about winning than he does about sportsmanship or the health of other players. He cares more about winning than he does the character of his players. He cares more about winning than he does about setting an example for the rest of the team. He makes me sick.

As for those who try to put this back on UGA…PLEASE. How idiotic can you be? We are not talking about UGA’s penalties…we fans complain about our team’s lack of discipline ALL THE TIME. This blog is not about UGA…it is about the thugish and dangerous actions of a UF player. UF can dish out the “thug” lable when it comes to other teams, but can’t seem to accept it when the video proves it about their own team.

Coach Richt “hasn’t seen the tape and doesn’t want to comment?”

Possible translation … “Hmm, so they got that on tape, huh .. well, yeah, that’s pretty bad, but you know – this could be kind of a slippery slope here … I mean, there’s alot of tape out there from alot of games. I wonder how long it will be before tape of one of MY guys shows up doing something like this? Better let the league handle this one … next question, please ….”

No questions – Spikes was wrong and deserves a suspension. But, realistically, I think we all know deep down that these types of things happen way more than any of us would like to admit …

I’m a Bama fan which the team is know for hard hitting, and use to play before getting injured. there is a class of playing football and then unsportsmanlike and just wanting to hurt people. In a rival game or a game when both teams are playing not so much by the rule, that’s when the better players step up and shine as the better person and win by hits not by cheating/what ever it takes (eye gouging). You are playing on national TV and have to play smart. Just like the pro’s if you get cought pay for it by suspension or fines and if the SEC dont do something the NCAA should since the are over it all.

Those who want to criticize UGA for this are just moron homers. This is about Brandon Spikes and the attempt to gouge the eyes of W. Ealey. This is not some rumored, heresay charge. It is proven by video. There is nothing that can mitigate what Spikes did to another human being. It is not about the teams or the rivalries or who won or lost. This is about what is right or wrong. Nothing else.

The refs killed a 3rd and 2 when they called a personal foul for “ripping spikes helmet off. Look at the f’n tape, spikes was the one who was being blocked and after the whistle blew he tried to once again push josh davis over the pile in order to injure him and his unbuttoned helmet came off. Look at the F’N tape. He is a scumbag and to here these so called unbiased announcers defend and praise the gaytors and ridicule everything about the bulldogs is GD criminal. I will never watch another CBS game with these two calling it.
The gaytors are a joke and would have lost had it not been for poor coaching and the refs

How can anyone with an IQ greater than a Tech poster claim not to be able to infer Spikes’ intent when he maliciously and forcibly shoved his extended fingers into the opening of Washaun Ealey’s facemask while Ealey was being tackled and on the ground by other Florida players. Then other psychos spin an equally lame defense (almost as lame as the Martinez-Richt defense) of Spikes by indicating that Ealey didn’t appear to be injured by the incident, therefor, Spikes was not doing anything unsportsmanlike?

Getrealaboutit…yes, this happens in football. But that doesn’t excuse it. I see nothing wrong with going through game tape after each game to point out such incidents. I have no problem with ANY players being suspended for trying to gouge eyes. There was not any question about this. Spikes admitted doing it. The video clearly proved it. I saw it during the game…it was that blatant.

There is no “slippery slope” on this. Some dirty plays are questionable. Others are obvious…like this one. It’s hard to judge the questionable ones. It should be EASY to judge the obvious. Retaliation is no excuse. He should be suspended for two games.

There is no excuse for what Spikes did. It doesn’t matter if no injury occurred. It doesn’t matter if it was retaliation. It doesn’t matter how you view UGA’s offenses. This blatant attempt to injure was caught on tape and admitted to by the player.

If this goes by without a significant punishment (2 game suspension at least) then the SEC is saying such actions are ok. UGA, UF, Bama, and Tech fans should all agree on this…such behaivor is uncalled for and should be aggressively acted on by the conference. What if a UGA player had gouged Tebow’s eyes? Spikes deserves to be suspended. The eye-gouging move was classless, retaliatory or not. He should get at least a game. As a Gator fan and alum, I don’t condone this type of behavior. But, this was a chippy game and plenty of Georgia players were acting poorly as well. If they were eye-gouging, what should happen to them? If they’re hitting late or going for the knees, what? “That’s just football?” Give me a break. This is a rivalry game and a lot of the players dislike each other. Doesn’t give ANY of them the right to cheap shot.

Oregon player gets suspended for the year for punching a player after being taunted by him. Oklahoma State player gets suspended for the year after not telling the truth about going to dinner at Deon Sanders house. Florida player gets suspended for the FIRST half of the game against the worst team in the conference. Not only does the player not have any class, but neither does the coach or the SEC commisioner. Thank goodness he didn’t do something really egregous like criticising the official. If Florida or the SEC cannot do something about this, then the NCAA has to. If you prove an eye gouge as obvious as Spikes, Pot, then produce the video. Suspend the offender. I care more about the safety of players and good sportsmanship. The problem is that rarely does video delineate the difference between a “football play” and intentional attempt at injury. Spikes video clearly shows him stuffing his hand inside the facemask AFTER the play. According to an interview with Meyer, Spikes admitted he was retaliating, so intent has been PROVEN. It is ridiculous to keep suggesting the complaints on this (most from the NATIONAL media, by the way) are just sour grapes or rivalry attacks. NOTHING IS FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

Your question is moronic. Clearly you are a blinded, irrational homer.

Barry Jay

November 2nd, 2009

PotKettle
If you have video that proves a UGA player intentionally tried to injury another player, the produce it. The UGA player should be punished as well. Stuff you call “dirty” is often borderline football plays…hitting low, helmet to helmet, hands to the face, etc. With such plays, intent is hard to prove.

This was entirely different. Spikes jumped on a pile and was shown clearly thrusting his hand inside the facemask of Ealey. The play was OVER. Not only does the video prove his intent, according to an interview with Meyer posted at the AJC, Spikes even ADMITTED he was retaliating, i.e. he did it on purpose. Prove that and yes, the offender, whether UGA, UT, UF, Tech or whoever, should be suspended for at least two games.

You stupid homers just don’t get it. This is not about rivalries or school colors. This is about safety. I played football myself. I played soccer too. I got my cornea scracthed on a dirty play and I know how close I came to losing my eye. There is no excuse for this…ever.

Thought the football player who retaliates always gets the penalty, then Spikes is due a personal foul penality. Prehaps the officials will do that in the second half of the Vandy game. If 3 other gator players were eye gouged by the dawgs, then the dawgs should have been penalized or prehaps like Spike they were only retaliating. Since UGA is 119 out of 120 teams in number of penalities received, hate to think any are missed. Wondered why the dawgs did not play in the 2nd half, prehaps they decided as Urban has that the uncalled eye gouging penalities should receive a 1/2 game suspension.

Reminded of the time (50s prehaps?) when an Ala player either stepped or kicked a Ga Tech player in the face when he was down doing a good bit of damage. Tech refused to play Ala after that, no sure they have since. Anyway Ga should consider terminating the Fla series in the future. Ga is not getting much out of the series.

You are not a moron because you agree with a suspension.

It is moronic to whine about dirty play and suggest UGA fans are hypocrites. As I stated…show the video tape and prove intent, then you can compare what you think is dirty play to what Spikes did. It is moronic to cast aspersions in another direction when talking about an obvious and admitted dirty play by Spikes. We are talking about what Spikes did. That is the only video evidence we have today.

And I will go on record again—Any player caught doing that in a given week should face discipline. I think two games is what is should be for that offense. If you can prove intent, the suspension should be two games. Having had a scratched cornea, I know how easily someone could lose vision. Stop it before it happens by being strict.

I was at the game and Georgia players were taking cheap shots at every opportunity. Look at all the flags for unsportsmanlike conduct. They were also running their mouths bigtime. Perhaps it was the black ‘helmutts’ and black pants. Perhaps Richt and staff talked to them about “manning up” and acting with some attitude like old days at da U. Who knows.

I do know that when Urban addressed this with Spikes, Brandon did not deny and apologized for it and said he got caught up in the moment as he had been spit on and poked in the eye on other plays. And he didn’t gouge Ealey’s eye did he? He put his hand inside his face mask but did not injure the player. And apparently Ealey was the player who had spit.

So no excuses, Spikes was suspended for half a game and we move on. I’d suggest GA fans redirect their energy toward supporting their team. The GA stands looked teal in the fourth quarter…didn’t know the Pups had changed to teal and black…oh those were the empty seats from poodle fans leaving early…again.

And BTW- When Richts mentor “saint Bobby” was presented with clear video evidence of Darnall Docket actually twisting the leg of a UF running back (Ernest Graham) and injuring the player preventing him from playing the remainder of the year, absolutely nothing was done. So what do you think Richt would have done…NOTHING. Which is a big reason you guys are 4 and 4. Penalties and Richt does NOTHING.

anything is justifiable. heck, why not allow weapons on the field just in case someone spits on you then you can take severe action. in no realm is an intentional attempt to injure acceptable…especially if it is so blatant. a half a game? hahahahahaah….what a joke. might as well just said “we’ll make him run extra.” that’s not discipline. but nonetheless, he’s a mighty gator and should be excused for losing control. i’d rather my favorite teams kick a player out of the program than allow such behavior. maybe, just maybe, a vandy lineman will accidentally lose control on a low block and impose his own suspension. then i’d like to see how many gater fans are upset.

“”That really didn’t matter to me,” Ealey said of the suspension. “That’s their decision. He shouldn’t, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football.”

Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn’t hurt.

“He really didn’t gouge my eyes,” Ealey said. “He really didn’t get a chance to get close to my eyes.”

Im so tired of everyones first reaction is to suspend a player for several games when all the ncaa does is exploit the players of millions of dollars but then tries to hold the players to some ridiculous standand of conduct(DEZ BRYANT). This type of behavior was a staple back in the golden age of football. The players now are always considered soft when compared to their yesteryear counterparts. Spikes made a bad choice but Im certain that he will not lower himself to that form of payback for the rest of his career.
