Jeez, Jeff. Maybe you need to wake up and realize that the automatic suspension from the SEC if the play had been flagged and Spikes had been ejected would have only been the first half of the next game. Do you want some whine with that cheese?

Go look at the entire tape and you will understand the punishment. Meyer realized that Spikes was reacting to what had been done to him the whole game, but that it was still wrong and deserved punishment. If this had been a random stand alone act on Spikes part, I think you would have seen a full game suspension. But the Dawgs, well they will want him suspended for life but not the same for the Georgia players who propagated this act. I guess it makes them feel better and distracts from the fact that their program is on the ropes…

So they reviewed it, determined it was worthy of punishment and one has been handed out. My guess is it will be so lopsided by half they won’t play him the entire game.

The fact that they punished him at all to me means more than the punishment.

I still don’t understand in a world of head injury awareness they let spikes on the field with a helmet that obviously doesn’t fit him. He spends more time with his helmet off than on. That can’t be safe.

Jeff, wah wah, stuff like that happens all the time in pile ons in college football. Not condoning what Spikes did, he should know better, and be a better leader than that. Also, all the naysayers would never be satisfied with the punishment no matter what it was. If it was a game, they would so oh its only Vandy, a season, he should be banned for life. He made a dirty play, got caught, and will have to learn to control his emotions and retaliate differently when he gets gouged or his helmet ripped off.

I thought Spikes should have been penalized for spearing Ealey after the whistle on a procedure call. It was in the 1st half and Ealey reacted strongly. Everyone was stopping as the play died–and wham–in comes Spikes helmet. I also thought Spikes should have been penalized for staying on top of Moreno last year after the first time he tackled him…it was a great, text book tackle. He just didn’t stop and get off. I understand the emotion, but if the refs don’t start calling these guys for this stuff, the game is going to be ruined. UGA should have been flagged for several other calls, too.

I hope Richt addresses the issues where Georgia wasn’t playing cleanly. No, Georgia wasn’t showing very much sportsmanship during the game.

However, that’s no excuse for Spikes trying to blind Ealey. Or any of the other times Spikes was initiating contact after the play. And this isn’t the first time that controversy has followed him after a play. Check YouTube for videos of him trying to bait Oklahoma.

After replaying the video, this is what happened on the helmet play in the first quarter.

Richard Samuel is tackled. Spikes runs in. Spikes wasn’t even in on the play, which was now over. He and Josh Davis grab each other over Samuel’s body. Davis grabs a bit of dreadlocks and continues holding on. Spikes’ helmet slides off. Grabbing dreadlocks isn’t a nice thing to do, but he did not rip off Spikes’ headgear.

The difference is this was premeditated. It’s one thing to get some personal fouls with aggresive playing and such but come on.

A stronger message should of been sent. He tried to intentionaly take a player out of the game, possibly more.

Whats the difference between what spikes did and what the Blount guy at Oregon did earlier in the year? Oh I know, what the Blount guy did might not of ruined the career of the other player.

I remember the play where 40-ish looking Spikes was dabbing at his eye. It was after his helmet came off. It did not appear there was any intentional hands, feet, et al to his face on the play. Unlike his digging into Ealey’s facemask.

There is a big difference in rough, and aggressive football (late hits, tackles out of bounds, an inadvertent finger in the eye) and an intentional attempt at trying to blind someone by trying to rip out their eye.

Not only the coaches of FU, but the fans as well think that this is OK. “Our player(FU) got hit in the eye(accidentally) therefore it’s OK to retaliate even if you didn’t successfully blind the guy”(why else were his fingers in the face mask- to massage his forehead?). Some of you so-called fans amaze me. Tit-for-tat is great, screw the morality issue. Nice signal. This was a more egregious act than the Oregon player punching the kid who was taunting him after the game. He was suspended and he is as important to that team as Spikes is to FU. We gotcha colors, boys, and it appears they are red or blue depending on which gang that you belong to. Classless Meyers has shown his true colors as well. If a UGA player were caught on tape deliberately trying to gauge a player’s vision that could affect his football and academic future, I would DEMAND that the player be suspended for the year or until I’m certain he understands what his actions can cause in personal harm to the player and the harm he has done to collegiate athletics and to his team. Some of you appear to think that going from the “greatest” team to the “dirtiest” team is fine. And that says a lot about you, FU.

If the refs would have called Spikes for his uncalled unsportsmanlike penalty on his initial Knowshon tackle in last year’s game…maybe he would have never tried this. He hits late whenever he is not directly involved in the in the play. He just knows, like the rest of us know, that Florida is held to a different standard by the Referees in the SEC. Good for them.

Now, before the super arrogant gator fans with their huge sense of entitlement start crying…We deserved to lose on Saturday because our sorry coaches can’t get our thugs to play as good as your good coaches get your thugs to play…and our sorry coaches let them go swimming and wear whatever uniforms they want too.

I also read that Spikes wanted to blind Ealey becaus somebody pulled his hair. Well if you don’t like your hair pulled get it cut.

Every football player with that awful long hair deserves to have their hair pulled if they are dumb enough to grow it out like that.

Remember when Marcus Vick stepped on that guy? That embarassed VT and they took a stand. Meyer, on the other hand, probably suspended Spikes for getting caught by the cameras–not for trying to hurt somebody.

I looked the play that Spikes claims his eye was raked/gouged. It looks like his helmet is knocked off in a collision with the fullback then a lineman comes into his unprotected face with a helmet. He holds the side of his face for a minute then as he gets to the trainers they look at his eye. Hardly an intention to harm. But regardless the Dawgs lost the moral high ground with their own dirty plays.

Mr. Schultz, did you report the “full” story, or only what you saw on a “youtube” video? I am gathering that the UGA players did nothing to prompt this act from Spikes? Maybe you should go back and take a few interviews from players and coaches, and then report a “follow-up” to this half-a-story. If Spikes had a reputation of doing stuff like this on a regular basis, then yes, it was a bad deal. But again, I suspect he was pushed over the line by some shenanigans that UGA was doing that did not get caught on everybody’s youtube.

Who has more class? Chip Kelly suspended LeGarrette Blount for the whole season after a sucker punch. Urban Meyer suspends Brandon Spikes for a half. In my mind, a sucker punch and an eye gouge are in the same family of pain intended retaliation. While a sucker punch is horrible, an eye gouge can cause more long term damage. As seen, both coaches took action to their players’ incidents but who’s judgment is more appropriate for suspensions? I tip my cap to Chip Kelly.

For Idiot garcia and Urban Meyer, every photo i ve seen of Spikes for the last 3 years he has worn a plastic face shield, so when he was poked i guess the we were able to put fingers thru the plastic. Florida has a great team and deserved to win, but florida fans are the most uneducated fans in the country. It’s really not much of a story. It happens and I’m not really concerned about it. However, as I read through this blog it’s mostly Gators talking about this. They also were the ones that cried on and on about the endzone dance in 2007. You have a great team. Your team is probably the best in the nation again. You’ve owned my team for 20 years now. Is that enough validation for you guys. Do you not have enough going elsewhere that you live through your football team. both teams acted like street thugs on Saturday. I’m more dissapointed in that than Georgia’s terrible play. If Golic had watched the game, he’d see the 3-4 incidents where Georgia players attacked Spikes. What Spikes did was wrong, but where are the supensions for Davis and Ealey for their eye gouge(s) / hair-pulls.

As I said earlier Georgia is IRRELEVANT outside of Georgia. They are taunted by Tennessee’s Head Coach, will end up on a 2 game losing streak to Georgia Tech, are barely able to defend their home field against mediocre Oregon State and South Carolina teams BUT the ultimate is the ending of the Florida game when VIRTUALLY no Florida people at the game thought smacking down Georgia was worthy of excessive celebration. There was NO garbage–Glad of THAT–directed towards ANY Georgia fans after the game. There was almost a feeling of empathy for the people who follow the Reverand Mark’s team.

Going 0n 30!!!!!!! years since Georgia has played for a National Championship. There is no other “ELITE” team in America that has that kind of a streak. The Dogs have been spayed, and are as IMPOTENT as a 95 year old at the Athens Convalsescent and Rehabilitation Center for Advanced Geriatrics and Senile Demented Retirees and Football Coaches.

Here is a question for all you super classy Gator fans. Do you think it was neccessary for 3 dbs to hold AJ Green upright long enough for a safety to come in and bury his helmet in AJ’s stomach…when the game was already clearly out of reach?

Trying to hurt a defenseless player is just wrong.

That play plus the Spikes play and now weak punishment, make me think it is an organized push by the coaching staff to injure.

You may be the best in the country, but if you have to get there playing dirty…is it worth it?

Our guys play dirty too but we suck…so we don’t really benefit in anyway.

I don’t care who wins between Georgia and Florida, so I guess what I have to say won’t matter to either side. There was no sportsmanship present on either side in the game, but most of it involved playing the game. Once you get to trying to hurt players, you cross a line that most coaches will punish when they see it. Oregon officials sent a message that they will not tolerate the behavior seen on TV that night. Florida sent a different message. No harm no foul, so I won’t do anything. (A 1/2 game suspension) Yes there were several no calls that should have been made, but the SEC officials have shown all year that they have no idea how to call a game. You decide if the teams showed classless or classie. The truth hurts.

Wow, it’s amazing what you really learn about the Florida program, when push comes to shove. All their talk about Jesus H. Quarterback, and what an inspiration he is to his teammates, and not one of them can follow his (His?) example and admit it when one of their own got caught doing something wrong. Admittedly, we Georgia fans can’t cast too many stones, but at least our players get caught and suspended when they step out of line. James LaShoto, a high school football player from Arlington Catholic High School near Boston, is facing criminal charges for assault and battery after allegedly head-butting an opponent — 17-year-old Daniel Curtin (pictured right) — from Abington High School in a game on Sept. 19, according to The Boston Globe.

The victim was in a pile after a tackle and his opponent pulls his helmet off and head butts him in the face.

The kid was kicked off of the team and faces assault charges.

Yet Spikes gets a slap on the wrist for attempting to sink his finger into someones eye socket.

Funny…no one is mentioning the play earlier in the game when a Georgia linman ripped Spikes’ helmet off and gouged his eye and ear. There had been a lot of talking, shoving, etc between the entire UGA line plus Ealey, directed at Spikes. So it’s the old question: which came first? What Spikes did was definitely uncalled for, but was probably just the most noticeable of a series of transgessions between both teams.

Spikes should be suspended. I did not see any late hits on Spikes. The late hit on Tebow should have been flagged. The Dogs have no discipline as they are the most flagged team in the conference. To all of those saying that this happens all of the time in piles, Mike Golic was in plenty of these piles during his football career; his reaction seems to suggest that going after another players eyes in fact does NOT happen regularly. Dirty plays happen in piles, but there are no football players claiming that blatant attempts to poke another player in the eye are common place. An NFL running back told Bruce Feldman that it has never happened to him. There is a huge difference between accidentally poking someone in the eye during the course of a play and blatantly going after someone in a defenseless position after the play is over. There is no justifying these actions and this does not happen all of the time as all of these posters that never played football are claiming.

So this is what college football and its fans have become, just a bunch of loudmouth trash talkers that could not play high school football, baseball, golf, pingpong or anything else. Go watch a little league game and see how the parents act, all upset and raising hell in front of the other parents and kids because their golden child got beaned. Look at the way parents raise their kids now, look at the way coaches, scouts and agents treat them and advise them. They are told its all about you, nothing else matters, do as you want, you can make lots of money, you can buy lots of bling, everyone worships you and you will not fail since we will always be there with you since we are your friends and we know whats right for you, just listen to me and you cant go wrong. I’ve been on the Rivals UGA site most of the last 2 days. We’re all sick of the way UGA is playing. That is far and away the most frequent topic. Very little about sweet little Brandon.

So you’ll have to forgive me if I put more stock in what Mike Golic says about Brandon’s eye gouge than in what you Gator fans think about it. Golic is no Bulldog. But he also isn’t a punch drunk, no class Gator fan. And I’m pretty sure Golic was on the bottom of an awful lot of piles and tackles and cheap shots in his day.

IF MIke Golic calls you a chicken shat player…You are a chicken shat wuss, no matter what Elliot Garcia says.

Gators are thugs including their courch Meyar, and I suspect some of the will pay for this incident, since our coach can’t nut up and even call it what it is. Our players are too scared of committing fouls to play hard. I would have had a player head-hunting Timmy Tee and this goon, Brandon Spikes all game long just like Auburn did to Tennessee’s Eric Berry. He likes to take cheap shots too, but he sure couldn’t handle someone taking it to him. He took that game off.

Hey, I am an SEC alum and fan, but “my dog was not in the fight” (not having gone to Georgia or to Florida). However, (1) Meyer was embarassing trying to make it seem as if it mattered what Spikes had done to him before — “she hit me first never” worked with my parents and shouldn’t work with men about to graduate; (2) the part of the game I watched was replete with “dirty play” on both sides of the football, and the officiating crew did a darn poor job of maintaining control of the game, indeed tolerating blatant thuggery in the beginning; (3) Mike Slive and the SEC obviously would have been more upset if Mr. Spikes had criticized the SEC officials!; (4) This kind of thing needs to be “ruthlessly suppressed” at the league level, when the head coach declines to take the high road.

I’m with Golic — trying to blind a guy is worse than cold-cocking him.

Thanks to all of the Gator fans out there thqat have made me see the light. I have always pulled for the SEC on the national scene but not this year. It’s one thing to talk a little trash, but the garbage I’ve seen gator fans write here makes me think that the Florida football program and its fans must be the most classless bunch in football. I’m not a fan of either team, but I think it is hilarious that georgia fans are calling a florida player a “thug”. Georgia fields a team full of “thugs” and hot dogs and is led by the no class coach Richt. The players are a reflection of their coach. Against Florida they started piling up the penalties from the start, and the refs even let a few of their cheap shots go. Until georgia starts showing some signs of recruiting quality people they should never criticize the actions of someone else’s player. As for Golic’s comments, as I recall he was kind of cheap shot player also so it is funny to hear his “outrage” at the incident. As for Spikes, I watched the video and couldn’t see him “gouging” the guy’s eye; just doing what goes on in football piles a million times. Maybe georgia should wear black min-skirts next game if it is getting too rough for them.

Joe N, I think #39 needs to take a seat for game too. That was uncalled for and could have hurt Tebow. Too bad the refs missed it. Both teams and both fan bases are better than the bickering going on here. Sportsmanship should prevail and as I mentioned above both coaches need to have the tape reviewed and hand out some bench passes. Whether it was called or not during the game this isn’t good for either team. And you won’t see me whine about anything. Spikes gets his punishment and its done with.

Just so everyone knows,I’m a die hard (curse out the TV) when things aren’t going well fan of the Dawgs and Falcons.

The suspension of Spikes for 1/2 game (against Vandy no less) is a joke, but if one of our guys did it then he probably wouldn’t have been punished at all. CMR would have just made him go to church, or hang out with his wife pouring water on the sidelines.

I love my team, but I can’t stand this image that the program is acquiring. The senseless “whole team” celebration is just a part of the overall image of our program. The team is undisciplined. They continue to rack up one idiotic personal foul penalty after another. And would you stop with the dancing on the sidelines already???!!!!! The celebration against UF in 2007, the dancing on the sidelines, the stupid penalties, that lack of discipline. It all adds up to one thing. We have a new nickname. We are now THUGA!!!!! And until CMR starts holding players and coaches accountable we will continue to be THUGA.

I can handle us losing. Being a Falcons fan prepares you for that. But what is the point of acting like the old school Miami Hurricanes? At least they won titles. We can even top .500 and though!! Stop with all of this crap and just play ball. I’m very close to pulling the plug on these guys until this crap stops!!!! No more “THUGA”!!!! Please!!!!

First of all, I have to say that I hate Florida with every fiber of my being. Not just the GAYtors but the state, it’s people, every university and all of their programs and everthing else that resembles or reminds me of that cesspool.

I have especially hated the UF since I was a kid being brought up a UGA fan and knowing the rivalry and having the hatred instilled in me.

My father was a salesman and he was relocated to Jacksonville for two years when I was a teenager. Living there during that time fueled my hatred even more.

My freshman year of high school, my football team played the championship game in the GAYtor Bowl. After the game as everyone was clearing out of the locker room and heading for the buses, I told my coach that I had forgotten something in the locker room and ran back down the hall into the room, it was empty and I peed in a handful of lockers and took a dump in two more.

That’s my mark on GAYtor football.

Newsflash – Florida is classless. I love the justifications:
Tebow got hit late: I’ve heard it was “10 seconds” after the play – go check the timer it was 1.4 seconds after Tebow handed the ball off. Was it a late hit – technically yes. And should have drawn a penalty. It is not even in the same universe as trying to blind someone who is pinned by 900 lbs of people and cant defend himself.
Also love the “Brandon was just getting back at UGA for what they did to him”. A joke of an arguement. 3rd play of game – UGA is flagged for illegal motion, as they often are, and whistles blow play dead. Everyone stops – except Spikes – who continues and forearms Ealey to the head and runs his mouth – Ealey pushes him off of him – and SPIKES takes a swing. No flag – nothing.
The play Spikes has “his helmet ripped off” – he is playing with his chinstrap unbuttoned, (another penalty uncalled) and it literally falls off and he does a Lambeer type flop – drawing the 15 yard penatly on UGA and ending their first drive. No one ripped his helmet off – the idiot doesnt buckle his chinstrap.

I get it – UF is the better team and has been for 20 years. I thought Gamble’s facemask on the opening kick was stupid and dangerous – he got flagged for it. The late hit on GIlliam out of bounds was a continuation play, should have never been called. Price Miller not helping Tebow up – Ok – bad sportsmanship – but not that unusual. NONE of this comes even remotely close to the Criminal actions of Brandon Spikes – and no it doesnt happen on every play by everybody – live with it UF – you win becuase you win at all costs – even letting sub human criminals be a part of that fine Gator tradition.

This is an 18 or 19 year old innocent kid who was not in a position to defend himself. I say Spikes should be suspended for the rest of his college career. This is a college sport, not war combat! This could have blinded a guy – - is that what you idiots call fair? If a player wants to retaliate, then hit the guy who knocked his helmet off – - not someone who can’t get a hand free to defend himself. Shame on Spikes and if you think it’s OK, then shame on you. As a GHSA official, this is mandatory expulsion. If I had seen this in a game, the player would be out two games, minimum. I totally agree with Golic on this one. When I first saw it, my initial reaction is that this is worse than the Blount thing. This is criminal! But THE MOST CRIMINAL ASPECT OF IT ALL is that the SEC Commissioner has done nothing! What does that say? I’ll tell you what it says. It says the PAC 10 commish has more integrity than the SEC commish.

I’m not surprised that Meyer has done nothing…Spikes’ action is only a reflection of Meyer’s attitude toward UGA and contempt for Mark Richt. Spikes is just mirroring some of the classless, tasteless contumacious actions of his coach. However, the SEC commish is sending the wrong message by not suspending Spikes for at least two weeks, if not for the rest of the year including the BOWL game.

There is no love loss in this game. We hate the gaturds and they hate us. However, trying to intentionally injure a player’s eyesight is thuggish and should not be tolerated. Mike Slive should definitely suspend this thug for the rest of the season. No worries! He will fit in nicely with the Oakland Raiders and their thug mentality.

It seems they’re not quite the whiners (yet) the Georgia fans have become. Of course, they’ve only lost a few to Florida, while you fans have lost for a couple of decades. Quit whining and man up for an ACC team you might be able to beat.
