Urban Meyer just took, "Stand by your man," a little too far.
Florida coach Urban Meyer’s apparent policy on eye-gouging is now clear. Only a successful blinding or maiming can result in a full-game suspension.
Meyer suspended Brandon Spikes for only the first half of the Gators’ next game against Vanderbilt for eye-gouging Georgia running back Washaun Ealey.
I’m not sure if missing one half of a Vanderbilt game really qualifies as discipline. But apparently SEC commissioner Mike Slive didn’t want to get in Meyer’s way on this one. I guess Slive only worries about the real serious issues: sound bites about referees, not trivial matters like jamming fingers into eyeballs.
What happened Saturday certainly did not affect the outcome of Georgia’s 41-17 loss to Florida. The Bulldogs themselves have devolved into one of the nation’s most-penalized and least-disciplined teams. Meyer felt compelled to say the linebacker was retaliating for earlier incidents that resulted in him having his helmet knocked off and being poked in the eye (he said).
But Spikes’ act was on another level.
“I don’t condone that,” Meyer told reporters in Florida. “I understand what goes on on the football [field], but there’s no place for that. We’re going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I spoke with him. That’s not who he is. That’s not who we are. He got caught up in emotion.”
Ealey was not available for comment Monday. It was a day off for Georgia players (the NCAA mandates one day off per week for players). Coach Mark Richt declined comment on the incident Sunday night.
But that didn’t stop this from snowballing into a national story Monday. The strongest comments came from Mike Golic, co-host of ESPN’s morning, “Mike and Mike” radio show. Golic has some credibility. He was a defensive lineman at Notre Dame and an eight-year NFL veteran. He has been at the bottom of a few of these piles. So what does it mean when he calls this, “one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life”?
And what does it mean when he says it was worse than when Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount punched Boise State’s Byron Hout in the season opener? (Blount initially was suspended for the full season by Oregon. But several weeks later the school announced a tentative reinstatement, and he may return this week against Stanford.)
“You can clearly see Brandon Spikes’ fingers go into the facemask of the running back for Georgia, and, I don’t mean just go in there — go in there and twist around,” Golic said. “It is a bad looking eye-gouge. And I know this guy is a tough player and I know he hits and I know he’s considered one of the best linebackers. But that’s one of the biggest chicken-bleep things I’ve seen in my life. Ever. Ever! To be that good of a player and have to do that – stick your fingers in a facemask and try to blind a guy, eye-gouge him, is pathetic, Brandon! Pathetic, that you would do it!
“There needs to be some disciplinary action. Everybody wants to talk about LeGarrette Blount from Oregon for punching that kid. I’ll tell you what. I’ll take the punch over this garbage. Any day of the week. Any day of the week over that garbage on the field of sticking your fingers in somebody’s facemask and trying to blind him. Stick your fingers in their eye? Are you kidding me…?”
Golic later said: “What a horrible move that is. What a classless, unsportsmanlike move that is.”
Meyer said his wife and defensive coordinator Charlie Strong both mentioned the Spikes’ incident to him. His initial reaction was to move on. Then he saw a replay of the incident decided to speak to Spikes about it.
But his initial balking indicates he didn’t want to suspend Spikes at all.
“Very emotional things happened in that game in particular that were not good for either side,” Meyer said, “but the bottom line is we’re Florida and he’s Brandon Spikes and we expect certain things.”
Nice speech. But it would’ve meant more if there was some action to back it up.
If you haven’t seen video of the play, you can view it here.

Georgia would be better off if Nick Williams was suspeneded. He’s missed too many tackles to count on top of all the stupid penalties and blown coverages.. I hope they don’t do the Dawgs the favor of putting him out of the game.

Tampa Gator STILL doesn’t get it. Shocking!!! Dude, you know the old adage about keeping your mouth shut so you don’t prove that you are a fool???
I’m also amazed that ANYONE, Lizard or not defends this because, so in so did it. How ABSOLUTELY childish. The fact that these same folks don’t realize it is even more amazing.
Here’s some quality examples of more buffoonery from a guy who calls himself “Slimey Slive”.
“In a violent sport such as football, we need to make exceptions for such violence.”
Are you serious???? REALLY??
So, for you its OK for someone to attempt to put someones else’s eyes out just because they are on a football field??? Have you lost your mind???
“Please. Let’s keep things in perspective. So Sikes didn’t act gentlemanly. There really wasn’t enough room between Ealey’s face and helmet for him to get in direct contact with Ealey’s eyes. So what’s the big deal? He really couldn’t do anything to hurt Ealey.”
Do what?!?!?! You’ve obviously NEVER worn a football helmet much less played the game if you can make that statement.
I don’t know who is the bigger fool, you or Tampa.
All UF folks, and everyone else for that matter, should say there is no place for what Spikes did. Period.

amazing how the gators defend spikes classless low rent blatant unsportsmanlike conduct and offer lame excuses. just like the 1’s that were offered after urbans classless low rent blatent unsportsmanlike calls for time out during last years games. the fact that you condone, support and excuse such behavior very amply demonstrates that you would sell your soul for a “winner” regardless of their lack of character, conduct, behavior, attitude, sportsmanship or lack thereof. how low will you go for a winner? just because you have the most points at games end does not mean that you are a role model or a good football player or coach or that you are not a loser and a thug.

I love the commments like “Make him attend class, Urban. That’s plenty of punishment.” Who had the highest graduation rate of football players last year in the SEC and NCAA? Florida graduated 100%. GA’s players can’t pass driving tests and get legal licenses. Enjoy your loss and I hope Paul Johnson’s “high school offense” (Willie’s famous quote) drubs you again. The fact that the Florida fans would defend Spikes’ actions is incomprehensible. I’m a Dawg fan and if any player on the team had done this, I’d support a (real) suspension. Frankly, it calls for expulsion. If you can’t recognize the difference between hitting a player in the chops (Williams on Tebow) with his helmet on, duiring a play and gouging eyes after a play, then you are beyond help. The Williams hit is unnecessary roughness. The Spikes gouge is aggravated assault. Oh and the race card? Really? Oh, we better not criticize Spikes’ actions because he’s black. Not a chance. Absolutely a crying shame that gator fans would condone this behavior and try and turn it aroung regarding Tebow being poked in the eye, my god people did you not look at the play where Tebow got poked, and even thew helmet incident may or may not have been intentional, if it was, then it should be accessed some kind of punishment, but what Spikes did was the cheapest shot i have seen in all of my years playing football, coaching or just as a fan…My previous Coaches would have suspended me from the team in high school, you want fact, well we had a young man on the team that bit another young man during a very heated contest, the opposing player and coaches relayed this information to our coaches and althought the video was not very clear, the young man was asked if he had performed such an act, he told our coach the truth, and guess what, he was suspended from the team, only the 4th game of the season, and yes he was a starting junior safety..There was zero tolerance for that on the football fiel, so go ahead ReptilesRule and other Gators who support this or want to say every hit that was delivered on your team was of that nature, the truth is it is classless and winning for Meyer is more important than what we teach these young men..And yes sometimes these things games are very intense and things will happen, but as is with life, there are consequences, what happens next time when he does put someone’s eye out…I will tell you this I am a pretty large man, and if that had been my son he pulled that on, you can’t bet your sweet
A$$, i would be in Gainesville Florida sitting in your Coaches office…I’ve spoken to several families that i know that just happen to have sons that are being recruited by the gators and others, not sure how that will affect their recruitment, but the families are very concerned that Mr. Meyer has put little importance on this issue…A half game suspension, give me a break..Gator fans, think about it what if that were your son on the receiving end or the giving end, would you be proud, i can promise you the discipline my son would be given for such a cowardly act…

After hoping one of you posters would do the job for me, I’ve given up and looked up the Ryan Reynolds incident in 2003.
In a nationally televised ESPN Saturday night game, Ohio State LB Ryan Reynolds was caught on film choking Wisconsin QB Jim Sorgi resulting in an injury which forced Sorgi from the game with a damaged larynx.
Reynolds, for his action, was suspended for 1 game by head coach Jim Tressel.
I’m not trying to make this a choking vs. eye gouging argument but the length of Spikes’ punishment does have precedent in comparison.

Spikes was definately out of line, and Coach Meyer handled it properly. Also, who cares what the loud mouth Mie Golic says. He is simply another “holier than thou: Notre Dame Alumni who means nothing to the Gator Nation. Anyone who was at the game on Saturday clearly saw that some of the UGA players were also out of line a few times, but that is no reason for what Spikes did in retaliation. Players on both sides were taking cheap shots, and the officials did a super job in keeping the game under control.
The real problem for the UGA fans is that they are all furious that UF has clobbered and embarrassed them 2 years in a row. The stupid dance and black helmets simply show that the UGA coaches spend more time dreaming up childish motivational items rather than preparing their team to face UF. I respect Coach Richt and what he does with his team is his business. The DAWGS should enter the Dancing With the Stars TV show. Perhaps the UGA fans should spend more time supporting their team than criticizing their coaches and players and leaving the game early in the 4th quarter. It appears that the once proud DAWG Nation has turning into a bunch of wimpering and finger pointing puppies.
Coach Meyer will handle the Gators, and it is none of UGAs business.
Go Gators!

A half-game suspension is pretty pointless, but it really isn’t fair to Spikes for him to be the only player punished from this game. Georgia came out of the lockerroom and played dirty football from the opening kickoff on. Just take a look at Nick Williams’ late hit on Tebow, the two Florida players treated during the game for eye injuries, the numerous tackles by the facemask (both flagged and unflagged), the pulling of hair, tearing off of helmets, and the midfield celebration. Shoot, take a look at just about any newspaper’s pictures from the game and you’ll see most of these right in front of you. It was a dirty game. I’m sure Brandon’s eye gouge was not the only dirty play coming from the Gator side. With all of that, why should Brandon Spikes be singled out? Sure, an eye gouge poses a serious risk of injury. Doesn’t a brutal hit on a defenseless quarterback well after the handoff pose just as serious a risk? Especially to a quarterback who is four weeks removed from a brain injury.

Gator and GT fans keep implying this is just Georgia fans whinning about a loss. We lost it’s obvious we have some issues this year but this is different. The National media, Charlie String, and Urban’s own wife brought this to his attention. Not even our own coaches brought it up. Did Golic play for Georgia? As far as gouging Teabow’s eye I didn’t see it and nobody can name who did it. I hear Teabow say they were washing dirt out of his eye. As for the fan who wanted to know why Richt didn’t suspend the team for celebrating and taunting in 2007 I think taunting is not on the same level as eye gouging unless the taunting really hurt their little feelings. Your Gators, namely Teabow taunt after every play. Just not on the same level as blatant eye gouging. So no whinning here just couldn’t hide his actions from the National media this time. Yes Georgia is down this year and tire of hearing about last years “beatdown” from GT fans 45-42 not a beatdown. Records since 2000 (this decade)including this season Georgia 94-30 Florida 95-29 GT 77-46 Georgia and Florida still close GT a “little” behind so quit implying Georgia hasn’t had a winning program. The real problem is not this year, it was expected to be a down year. Last year with 2 top 10 picks and another in the high second round, you should have competed for a NC last year. I think the point about the player with the suspended license was probably made to inidicate the lack of consistency from the UGA coaching staff. The player on the scooter with the suspended license was a few weeks ago and he was suspended from the Vandy game. The player with the learner’s license (at age 22), driving alone, and running a red light, was last week. One player was suspended. One was not.

This hypocrite is single handedly destroying the SEC.
A graduate of Dartmouth college!?!? Rich football tradition there.
A friggin lawyer….figures.
1st commisioner of Conference USA, yeah that alone qualifies him to be commisioner inthe SEC…what a joke.
And a damn Yankee to boot.
Slive became the seventh commissioner of the SEC on July 1, 2002. He previously was the first commissioner of Conference USA from 1995–2002 and was the first commissioner of the Great Midwest Conference upon its founding in 1991.
Slive’s contract with the Southeastern Conference has been extended through July 31, 2012, announced on March 6, 2009.
Early in his career, he practiced law in New Hampshire, served as judge of the Hanover, N.H. District Court from 1972–77, and was a partner in a Chicago law firm.
