Reggie Bush (who?) says Saints can go 16-0, he’ll win MVP

For a role player, Reggie Bush sure makes news. He has reunited with Kim Kardashian, says Saints can go 16-0 and he will win an MVP.

For a role player, Reggie Bush sure makes news. He has reunited with Kim Kardashian, says Saints can go 16-0 and he will win an MVP.

Earlier today I posted an NFC South blog about how New Orleans coach Sean Payton is trying to keep everybody grounded despite the Saints’ 6-0 start.

I didn’t plan on following up right away. But  I just found out Reggie Bush opened his mouth, which of course made my day and probably ruined Payton’s.

Bush, who has gone the wrong way in his career — from the second overall pick to a role player — predicted the Saints can go 16-0 this season. He also sort of predicted he’s going to win an MVP award, a Super Bowl and play in the Pro Bowl.

To think, when he reunited recently with underground porn queen Kim Kardashian, I figured that would be the dumbest decision he ever made.

According to a recap on ProFootballTalk.com, Bush appeared on SportingNewsRadio’s, “The Monty Show.” The show’s host set up Bush by asking him if he believed the Saints could go 16-0.

Rather than do the smart thing and issue the one-game-at-a-time ramblings coaches like to preach, Bush responded:  “Can we go undefeated? Yes.  I do think we have the players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching staff, we have the players.”

OK. It’s not loud and obnoxious. But it’s the kind of statement that can come back to haunt a guy. And a team.

Bush, who hasn’t been nearly the star most projected, also was asked about criticism he has faced since coming into the NFL in 2006.

Answer: “Once I do win an NFL MVP, once we do win a Super Bowl, once I am in the Pro Bowl, it’s going to be that much more special because of all the criticism that I had to come through and because of the work I’ve put into it, it’ll mean that much more to me and I’ll appreciate it more.”

saintssi28jpg-ddf8df2d60c6ea54_mediumAlrighty then.

For what it’s worth, there was an interesting blog this morning by Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. It addresses Bush’s significantly reduced role in the Saints’ high-octane offense. The running back had only six touches (three runs, three receptions) in New Orleans’ 46-34 win over Miami Sunday. His 10.5 offensive touches per game this season represent a career low, down from 15.8, 19.3 and 15.8in his first three seasons.

On the bright side, he dined with Kardashian at Cafe Martorano in Fort Lauderdale this weekend and made the Sports Illustrated cover, scoring a touchdown against the Dolphins.

By the way, my industry sources tell me that poor Kimmie was feeling very down and alone after her sister, Khloe, married Lamar Odom, and her other sister, Kourtney, announced she was pregnant. So she flew to New Orleans following Khloe’s wedding to reunite with Bush.

See. You get it all here.

he said “ONCE I do win an NFL MVP, ONCE we do win a Super Bowl, ONCE I am in the Pro Bowl, …”, he didn’t say he was going to this year.

Cool so we know he and Richard Seymour are both smoking from the same tree.

Interestingly enough. Now that the always fair NCAA has banished Dez Bryant…. I wonder if they are ever going to get around to concluding that “investigation” into USC… something tells me no.

If it was close Vince Young would rize from the ashes and just beat him out for the MVP….

The author of this article is an idiot. Haha I think its funny how people still doubt Bush’s ability. Peterson gets the ball 30 times a game instead of 3…imagine if reggie got the ball 30 times a game for a few games. It could be great. Stats are not everything in the NFL either. The NFL is a business and he does things on the field that have never been done before and its exciting. Who cares if he doesnt have the stats he was supposed to have. He spices things up and brings some unfoggetable highlights to the league..like jumping over people heads and making them look like kids. P.S. AP has more bad games than he does good ones..check the stats chief

As far as Bush’s optimism on winning an MVP, Super Bowl, and playing in the Pro Bowl…he’s obviously confidently misguided. Bu hey, this is sports, land of supreme overconfidence. I got the feeling reading this that you are likening it to the cliche “guaranteed victory”. All I see is someone who believes in his team and his talent.

EW, Bush was not the best RB on his college team, it was fatman Lindale White, that is why I thought he was not worth the pick then. Bush was in college and is still somewaht now an exciting player but not a very good RB. He is an exciting returner and is dangerous in space in the passing game ala Eric Metcalf, that sir is the definition of a 3rd down back. Many of you thought he should have went #1 to Houston, you had believed the hype as you still do.

Good role player, definitely NOT worth the high 1st round draft pick the Saints spent on him.

You have to be a dynamic, game changing player…and he doesn’t see enough touches per game to make that impact. He’s been reduced to a screen guy, short pass game, 3rd down back and punt returns.

When Deuce was healthy and rolling, Reggie couldn’t hold his jockstrap. Deuce McAllister was a real NFL RB.

Jeff,

That maybe the best comment you’ve ever made on your blogs.

Case and point…Reggie Bush…Vince Young…Mario Williams…did any of them warrant 1-3 in that particular NFL draft? Looking at it now…I’d say a definitive NO.

Which is why it’s too early to look at the 2009 Falcons draft and say that Dimitroff failed (right now it sure looks like it….with both Jerry and Moore out for the season) but if they both turn it around, and Chris Owens eventually turns into a decent corner…it could be a good draft 2-3 years down the road.

Tucker T, if you have been reading these blogs for the last couple of years then you should know I have way of bringing out the worst in some people. But, the Saints fans are feeling themselves these days. Ok, they are 6-0, but the barely beat a very bad Miami team. Your man Brees can’t thrwo 3 INTs and expect to beat the Falcons. Miami made the Saints one dimensional in the first half and Brees made mistakes, the Falcons have improved their run defense, the Falcons Run D have been impressive the last couple of weeks, and the Saints defense is improved but gave up 34 to Miami. Now you know the Falcons strength is their offense. I tell you its going to be a close game. The Falcons are usually well prepared and only lose to teams that are more talented. The Saints are good but not world beaters. The Falcons have a shot for the upset.

Plus, It’s only the Saints.

If you say that it will be more rewarding WHEN you accomplish a specific goal then I think you are guaranteeing that you will do something. If he had said “IF I win an MVP”, then that would be different. He didn’t, he used the word “when” not “if”.

So the Saints are on a record pace with scoring, they’re undefeated, and so forth. As I recall, last year’s Tennessee Titans also looked very good going into the eighth week or so (heck, they looked good going into the playoffs), but we know what has happened to them since. A harsh reality in the NFL probably more than any other sport is that things can turn on a dime; injuries can happen to key players, opposing teams can find ways to effectively adjust to their strategies, and myriad things can happen on and off the field to disrupt an organization’s direction and chemistry.

Of course as a Falcons fan I hope all of these (with the exception of injuries, of course) befall the Saints; the rivalry between our cities has been kind of like those between Braves and Padres back during the 70s and early 80s: it can get nasty but to date it hasn’t meant much in the big scheme of things. But this year is different, because both the Falcons and Saints are genuine playoff candidates, and I don’t want to see our rivals celebrating a Superbowl championship before we do.

Hearing Reggie Bush’s comments, I can’t help feeling that I’ve heard such drivel before. I mean, even if a player led the league in every positive category known to man, it’s still nothing more than selfish hubris and arrogance to thump one’s chest and say, “I’ve arrived; I am why my team is where they are”. Not only does that create friction in the locker room and inspire opposing teams, but God’s Word specifically states that He hates a proud look; these prima donnas in sports nowadays would do well to consider that fact.

I know the odds are stacked against our team going into the Superdome, but I’m rooting for them nonetheless, win or lose. When (not if) the Falcons address the holes and needs we still have over the next year or two, this rivalry could well gain very real significance in the lore of the NFL.

And for the record I never said you judge a draft on DRAFT DAY. You make the best decision with the information at hand and live with the results. I said “you can’t use hindsight to judge whether he warranted it or not” which is different than saying that in hindsight it was a good move to draft him #2. There IS a difference; he warranted the pick at the time but hindsight has shown it was not the best choice. As I stated at 3:04, you have a way of misusing quotes to build an argument that supports an undefeatable premise. Nice work.

From the faculty seats, I watched Reggie Bush dominate every USC home game. He was second only to Herschel Walker in NCAA excitement. (From a few rows up, as a kid, I I watched Herschel bust Notre Dame for 150 yards with a broken shoulder in the Sugar Bowl). I know Reggie was also a decent student at USC. I have no idea what happened to both him and Leinart, but I suspect they are the NFL equivalents of the 3rd grader who dominates Pop Warner but stops growing and peaks by 7th grade.

“Plus, It’s only the Saints.

Come-On, Son”

I’m glad to see opponents still thinking like this. This Saints team is probably unlike any other team the Saints have fielded–they aren’t just Archie’s offense or the dome patrols defense, but both are actually decent for once. Even if they can’t make it to the Superbowl this year, I think they’ll at least make it to the playoffs, and to me that’s always a reason to celebrate.

As far as Reggie goes, yea he infuriates me a lot when he can’t freakin run but 2 yards, but at least he isn’t a whinny little pain in the a$$ crying about how little he gets the ball. He plays his part well for now.

Jeff, Great job at trying to make Bush look like a bad guy here. You definitely are a pro at getting things stirred up and twisting the truth. Bush has been nothing but a model citizen in New Orleans. He never complains about not getting carries, he never complains about his role being diminished, he works as hard or harder than anyone on the team and keeps his mouth shut. You referenced an article written by a New Orleans reporter yet fail to mention that in that article Bush refuses to talk about himself and only will say that all he cares about is the team. In another article he says he thinks his team can go undefeated and he has a goal of being the MVP and playing in the Pro Bowl so he can ultimately silence his critics and you try to make him out to be something that he is not. Stick to covering the local players. You obviously can’t handle a more national role.

I am a Saints fan since I live in Biloxi, MS. I seen the Saints taking R.B. as the #2 pick as a smart thing to do at the time. But now they are showing that they can win with out him. I think he has alot to offer the team or any team. But their play book has so many other weapons in it. I have to agree with R.B. they have the right players the right coaching staff, etc. they could go 16-0, but will they. I doubt it. See you guys in New Orleans.

Big Easy 830- D. Ferguson over Reggie Bush in draft….that is a good one!! I am sure DF will sell tickets, jerseys, and score touchdowns. Oh I am sorry….defense wins championships! Remember….Reggie injured last two seasons and as a Rookie, when healthy,…he had over 1000 yards in RUSHING, receiving, and special teams. Comparing him to Metcalf is comical at best. Maybe you would have picked D. Ferguson, Vince Young and then LenDale White in the draft that year. I am sure Pittsburgh would hire you tomorrow for a front office job.

All I'm Saying Is...

October 28th, 2009
4:07 pm

First, I don’t see where what Bush said was all that provocative. He simply said the Saints have what it takes to go 16 and 0. He didn’t predict it or guarantee it. He was confident which is what you want.

Second, he can decide whoever he wants to date—and he gets to live with that decision. (As far as I’m concerned and by just about any physical measure, Kim is hot. I don’t know if she is that interesting to be around but that’s Reggie’s call and his to deal with. At least she’s not an ugly schizoid skank like Steve Phillips apparently likes.)

Third, I think most of the criticism of Bush is rooted in jealousy, plain and simple. He wouldn’t be the first Heisman winner to be a bust in the NFL and there is certainly a long line of over-paid athletes.

Finally, its all moot anyway because the Falcons are going to pop that undefeated bubble Monday or the two teams meet up again in Atlanta.

LET’S GO FALCONS!

Michael Turner can’t run thru brick walls. The problem is the other teams know the falcons are going to run on 1st down and probably 2nd down, so they gang up to stop the run. Throw the ball on first down for pete’s sake. Try and confuse the defense for pete’s sake, The falcons are like the bulldogs. Too predictable on offense.

Reggie isn’t a bust, but he’s hardly a superstar…except in his own head.

Loved him in college, though.

BTW, the hammer hasn’t fallen on USC football because of $$$. I seem to recall a story about a lot of material witnesses suddenly getting amnesia. Plus, the NCAA has no subpoena power, it’s not like they can make anyone testify. And the kicker was when USC offered up the hoops program (which no one at USC really cares about, anyway) as a sacrifical lamb.

Not too much past to be proud of, Katrina maybe and all the urine and puke smell in N.O. from years of loserville. IQ of a “Aint’s” fan –16-0. They have the talent but stupid fans. Who dat ?, that’s the remark of a well educated fan base. Darwin was correct in New Orleans, they came from apes and still act like them too. Jeff…As usual comments by athletes are taken out of context and the media (you included) run with it and make a story of it. That’s what you are paid to do. The reason Reggie’s role this year is limited is because the Saints are the most explosive team in the NFL. This team has more talent than three of the mediocre teams combined talent in the league. Their coaching staff has also been upgraded, which has really helped their defense with Greg Williams. Will they go undefeated this year. Probably not. Could they? Poor turdybirds fans talking smack about the saints, just wait until monday night. Drew Brees will throw for about 450 yards on that sorry secondary. Let’s not forget the saints or also ranked in the top four (nfl) in rushing. They are not just a team that just throws the ball. Also the defense is much improved, compared to the last couple of years. Then one person commented about Detroit scoring 24 points on the saints defense. You should know, due to the saints offense being so prolific, the other teams had threw the ball more, by that time the games were well in hand. Just remember one thing, monday night, the saints will hang a fifty spot on those sorry turdybirds. I am a life-long Saints fan, so that should be noted before I get into this. I have to say that I believe the Falcons are a MUCH better team than their getting props for in the media. And 2 losses ain’t much to worry about. I think this week’s game will be the most challenging of our team’s year so far and I root that 1) we’ll both come out healthy, and 2) we both get fair calls from the zebra’s. They have made some crappy calls this year and I don’t want my team (or the Falcons) having to suffer a loss based on their ineptitude.

As for Reggie, damn…shut yer gums dude. I like that you’re confident but you gotta do it on the field first, then flap the lips as much as you want. Drew Brees can talk. Even Matt Ryan can trash but you Reggie? Not yet. Great leap in the Dolphins game for a TD. Do it again and again and again, then I’ll back off ya.

Best of luck to the Falcons the rest of the year, just not this week.

My my my, with all that money, it goes to show, it still does not mean you’re going to win the world series. New York 1 is just like his giants, bills, jets and yankees, a bunch of losers. Go get your towel new york 1 the i-95 series will be determined in philly. I see philly winning the series in 5 games. Maybe next year dude, try going up tp 200 million on that payroll in an attempt to buy a world series. Let’s go REDSOX, let’s go. Phillies are up 4-0 in the eight, I love it.

The Saints will not look past the Falcons.
The stars will be out Monday. Brees may pass for 300 yards and Bell may get loose for a another 100. The field will be covered over with offensive weapons like Colston, Shockey, Moore, and Henderson. Add to it the running and catching of Bush, Thomas, and Evans. An energized well prepared defense and a rock-solid front line on offense complete an overcoming force.
So bring it on guys! A divisional fight on a Monday night and the whole world’s watching!
..What a game this is going to be!

How about citing the whole quote:

Q: Can the Saints, now 6-0, go undefeated?
A: Of course my first answer is going to be, ‘We’re going to take it one game at a time, and that’s our mentality” (laughs). I have to say it–if I don’t say it, then I’m going to get some hell from teammates. But can we go undefeated? Yes, I do think we have the players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching staff, we have the players and …

And the word “can” is italicized, meaning that it is physically possible. It doesn’t mean it’s probable. Also, he said nothing about Super Bowl or MVP or Pro Bowl THIS YEAR.

Try not to take things out of context next time.

Jazzy, you said if I was GM of the Falcons who would I pick, I said the O-lineman because the Falcons had Vick and this was before the dogfighting scandal, and they had Dunn at RB and they had decent talent on defense. They needed O-Lineman in the worst way that is why I would have picked D’Brickashaw Ferguson if I was the Falcons GM that year and if they had the #2 overall pick. Say what you will but Bush as a RB as a football player have been a disappointment. I compared him to Eric Metcalf then, but honestly, he has a long way to go before he comes close to Eric Metcalf’s accomplishments as an NFL player. Before you post something stupid, do a little research and you will see just how good of an NFL player Eric Metcalfs was. The only thing Reggie Bush have done since he left USC is trick New Orleans out of alot of money and the be tricked by one of the biggest garden tools in Hollywood, you guess which garden tools I am refering to. She has been passed around more times than a blunt at a Snoop Dog concert. PUFF PUFF PASS BABY, but Reggie thinks she’s a keeper, hahahahahahahahahahaaha.

Jeff,

As a Saints fan I’ve been wondering how Reggie’s remarks might be used to manufacture bulletin board material for the Falcons but thanks to you, I believe that Reggie and the Saints have added motivation to answer the call Monday night. Thanks again for challenging Reggie by questioning his professional ability and life off the field. Perhaps after reading your blog, Reggie will be content to sulk on the sidelines while planning his next night out with his “underground porn queen”? As you mentioned, it’s the sort of thing that can come back and haunt a guy.

BigEasy830….You and New York 1 should start hanging out together. I am not defending the so called “Garden Tool.” What does that have to do with you defending Eric Metcalf and wanting to draft D’Ferguson. Yes you did have Michael Vick…..but I could block for him. You literally would have to hold your block for a second before Vick started running for his life. Warrick Dunn…..another Louisiana product…..was great and really did well with any tackles that blocked for him. D’Ferguson that high in the draft is a joke. Just ask Cleveland how their high OL draft pick is working out. Dream On, Son……..

SoutsideATL…Who are Atlanta’s, DB’s? Do you really think that they will stop New Orleans’ receivers? 35-28 is a reach. Remember that the Saints have given up plenty of points in a few games but that was due to the Saints playing prevent because they had such a big lead. I don’t see how Atlanta scores 35 in that environment. It is going to be nuts!!

This is the kind of crap story that reporters put out just trying to get some reads. The reporter, if we can call him that, didn’t even bother to look up anything about the interview.

Q: Do you have the schedule?
A: A lot of people would argue that we have a tough schedule. We weren’t supposed to beat the Giants like that, the New York jets were supposed to be tough, each week I don’t think we’ve been picked to win a game yet. We were picked to lose in Miami, we were picked to lose against the Eagles, against the Giants, we were picked to lose against the Jets. But we continue to weather the storm, we continue to believe in ourselves.

Or, is this LaLa land, Hollywood, psycho-nonsense babble? All stats and info come from Duncan in NOLA. Premise of story is hunk starlet hooks up with chic starlet.

Do you realize – IF YOU WRITE THIS CRAP, YOU, YOU, YOU, AJC, Are the tool.

And, you care about what? Being the Fulton County equivalent of Us Magazine.
Please, leave social media BS to the individuals who haven’t invested decades caring about and crafting a journalistic sensibility. Step up. Do you job. Be good. Don’t get played.

And, if your editor actually assigned this piece of junk to you.

As a diehard Saints fan, I can assure you that I (along with numerous other Saints fans) wish the Saints would get rid of Reggie Bush. He is an overpaid, overhyped, underperforming athlete that adds nothing to the team. He is completely unreliable. I hold my breath every time he touches the ball and pray that he doesn’t fumble it. Pierre Thomas and Michael Bell are way better players than Reggie Bush. Maybe the Saints will finally see the light and give him the boot and the Falcons will pick him up. A Saints fan can dream…..

Your depiction of Bush was totally unfair.( talking about fake outrage ) I learned from the great Ga. Tech coach Paul Johnson that as a team and a player you have to set goals and expectations. I can honestly say given the hype….he was argubly the consensus #1 pick. That he should be a pro bowler, MVP and hopefully a Super Bowl champion.

[...] Other than Reggie Bush’s little slip up last week, the Saints have done a good job not overreacting to the 7-0 start and tempering the we-can-go-unbeaten talk. They have an easy reference point. The only other time they started 7-0, they went 4-5 in the final nine in 1991, and then lost in the first round of the playoffs (to the Falcons). [...]
