Michael Vick left the Eagles' sideline for only two plays at Oakland.
It’s only five games into Philadelphia’s season and three games back into Michael Vick’s NFL career. But it’s clear the Eagles still haven’t figured out what to do with Vick.
This news won’t crush the Falcons. The Eagles are another potential NFC playoff team (or at least so we thought until they managed to lose at Oakland Sunday). The Falcons never would admit this publicly, but the last thing they want to see is their former quarterback make a significant contribution to a conference rival. But Vick played only two snaps at Oakland — and neither as a quarterback. He lost four yards on a run and was a decoy on another play.
Impressed?
Here’s something else interesting. I spoke Monday night to Tony Dungy, Vick’s post-prison, quasi-mentor. Dungy reiterated what most believe — that Philadelphia was a good organization for Vick to go to because of the organization’s long run of success and stability. He said he still speaks to Vick, “once a week, and we text back and forth. He’s doing well.”
But when the subject turned to football, Dungy clearly was less certain about Vick’s future.
“I don’t know what the future holds for him on the field, but off the field I know being with someone like [Eagles coach] Andy Reid in Philadelphia was the best thing for him,” Dungy said.
“You never know about the football part of it. You have to get with the right team and have the right opportunity, and there’s just not that many places to go. There aren’t that many teams looking for starting quarterbacks. Then there’s the aspect of whether he can come back after two and a half years of not playing.”
Question: Does Dungy believe Vick will succeed in football again?
Answer: “That remains to be seen. That’s the wild card question. I think he’ll give it 100 percent. Emotionally I think he’ll give it more than he’s ever given. It remains to be seen if he gets it back physically.”
Vick has played in three games. He is one for five passing (for one yard) and has six rushes for 13 yards. He has been a non-factor in Philly’s version of the “Wildcat” (or “Spread Eagle”) offense.
Columnist Bob Ford of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote a scathing review of what the Eagles have gotten out of the Vick signing so far. An excerpt:
Since Vick has been eligible to play, he hasn’t been used much at all, and the Spread Eagle is little more than a funny-shaped curiosity stuffed into a corner of the offensive attic with a bed sheet over it.
There have been hints that much more is to come – could there somehow be less? – and that they have “only scratched the surface of its possibilities,” much as a dog tentatively investigates its ear with a hind leg.
One would think that Sunday provided a perfect opportunity to crank up the Vick plays and see what would happen. The Eagles were not moving the ball against a bad team. Their offensive line was down to seeds and stems. Brian Westbrook was gimpy again. McNabb was taking a beating and not looking particularly mobile.
It was a situation that yelped for trying something different, and even those who have wondered if all the Vick upheaval was worth it – present typist included – figured this was what Reid had in mind all along.
Well, we’re still waiting.
Final note on this: If nothing else, the PETA-fed circus that figured to follow Vick has been relatively low key, although there were about 30 protesters outside of the Oakland Coliseum for Vick’s first road game. Here’s a flashback for you: an airplane circled the stadium, pulling a banner that read: “Dog Fighter Go Home.”
I’m guessing you don’t miss those days.

I have to admit after all he put us through I am not sorry to see Vick is a non factor with an NFC rival.
But the truth is in the end the Falcon’s are truly better off without Vick. Plus Blank learned a lesson that he is not as smart as he thinks he is.

Vick gets about as much use as – say – Chris Redmon. If the Eagles continue the direction started against the Pidgeons then the Eagles will need to decide if next year’s 5 million option will need to be excercised.
No doubt Vick can improve alot of teams this year if for nothing else but sell tickets and excite the local fans. He still has an arm and as far as I can tell he has a new-found dedication not witnessed during his years here in the ATL. He just needs more reps before we will know if he is capable and if McNabb etal don’t start gettin it done I suspect we will see more of MV7.

Mike Vick is no longer relevant in professional football….he’s a freak show at best….he’s not even relevant enough to be a polarizing stake in the heart of a team anymore.
Thankfully, he’s someone else’s problem now.

He was alot of fun to watch in the beginning and could quite possibly be again. Regardless of what others may think of him being able to read defenses, check down or throw a good ball. I think even if surrounded by some of the best in the game he might still find it hard to play within a team concept. Because of his abilities, he has never felt the need to rely on anyone but himself. All this being said, he will probably be competeing for a starting Q/B position next year with someone.
I will be happy when he becomes a non-factor in the AjC !

Every opportunity this paper gets to kick this guy the aim low. Come on people. The guy is two years removed from playin pro ball and he’s the third string QB on a possible play off bound team. What do you expect? Do you expect the guy to go out there at this stage and be relevant if so you’re somewhere below stupid. Vick will be ok. By seasons end we will have a sense on where his career may possibly go from here, until then just give the guy a break. No need to wish the worst on someone who’s paid there pennance and then some. The AJC needs to get over themselves. Vick is in Philly. I thought this was a Falcons city….???

Don’t really see why such the effort to help this guy play again? He’s not contributing, his type of game doesn’t fit the Eagle offense. He’s not the backup Quarterback. Hmmm. Maybe Rush Limbaugh was right in 2003 about the NFL and the Media, just not about Donovan.

All he needs is another opportunity.
The “dog thing” is over. He did his time and paid dearly for it.
He will succeed when he gets an opportunity to run an offense.
I am proud of the Eagles for giving him a team to start back in the NFL.
They need to use him more or ship him off to another team.

How anybody can honestly be surprised by the former #7’s lack of effectiveness is truly beyond comprehension. The man was out of the game for more than two years. I don’t care how much he worked out. It’s not the same when you aren’t out there working out and practicing with folks who compete at that same level.
I am glad he’s not in Atlanta, and I believe he has paid his debt to society. But I don’t believe he will ever be anywhere close to the player he was before his legal problems started.

Jeff, do you really think McNabb is going to share snaps with Vick? They used him more in that 1 game with Kolb as the starting QB and since McNabb has come back Vick has received very little playing time.
It was McNabb that started whining during a pre-season game about shuffling Vick in and off the field. He couldn’t get his groove going — yeah what happened to your groove Sunday McNabb. You called a timeout when the team didn’t have one which probably resulted in your team losing this game; instead of a touchdown you end up with a field goal.
Kolb said he had no problem with Vick coming into the game and said it actually helped him. Bottom Line: McNabb wants to be the only superstar in Philly which is why TO and Garcia have been sent packing in the past.
However, the Eagles have moved Vick to the #2 spot (not sure if it was just for the Oakland game but I doubt it) and Kolb is now #3. And that is probably an indication that Vick has made significant progress.
And although you just won’t come out and say it Jeff we all can read between the lines. YOU WANT VICK TO FAIL!! You and the rest of the erstwhile left-wing media that attacks Rush for “attacking” black athletes while you guys do such a bang-up job doing this yourselves.

And please don’t even pretend the Falcons are worried about this looser. Let him play when him and the Eagles come down here. The Falcons will just show even more his inability to be an NFL QB.
He is a plain out street thug, always has been and always will be.
And to all of VICKERS, please go ahead and wear your #7 jersey at the game, your just showing your allegiance to an ex con, something to be real proud of. I just look at it as “Here’s your sign”

OK Schultz, it is a slow couple of days here in the sports world (MNF, a couple baseball games), so lets write about the third string QB in Philly Mike Vick. He’s not what he once was! He was out of the game for two years, been crucified, and doesn’t seem to be able to displace McNabb or Kolb. Give him a year or two, because some NFL team will give him a shot, and we will see. His first two years with the Falcons were exciting, but he leveled off. He will always be described as “that dog fighting convict” where ever he winds up. Good luck to him in the AFC.

Jeff in the history of the NFL when has a backup QB ever been a factor in any game in which the starter has played 99% of the snaps.
Philly is Donovan Mcnabb’s team.
How much did Daunte Culpepper play before stafford was injured?

Of course, the AJC would bash Vick. People expect this man to just come in and take McNabb’s team, lol. We all know that McNabb wants to be the only Superstar on his team, and frankly, he’s earned that right. If Reid puts Vick in the game, McNabb will get pissed. If I were Vick, I wouldn’t worry about getting on the field and all of the outside expectations heaped upon him. He just needed to get back in the NFL and on a practice field WITH SOME REAL COACHES/AND REAL ORGANIZATION. The Falcons definitely wasn’t that during his time here. Vick deserves some blame also, but the Falcons organization has found stability and order for the firsttime EVER. I can honestly say the Falcons are doing things the right way now, and good for them.
Vick is my QB, but I never expected him to go to Philly and take over….anyone with any football sense knows this. Could Vick play right now? I think so, but I don’t it would be beneficial to him because of the pressure and by everyone in the world knowing he is the most physically gifted player in the NFL. He never had the coach that pushed him mentally since Dan Reeves left, and sadly, Vick didn’t push himself as hard as he should have. That all goes with having out of this world ability, an owner who “coddled” him, and being “coddled” his entire football career.
IN MY OPINION, Vick needed to be brought back down to earth and be humbled, and that has definitely happened. He knows how to play QB in this league and he knows how to win…deep down..you falcon “fans” know this and have seen it with your own eyes.
Vick will shine again.

Vick isn’t a factor because he’s a backup QB. Which is a good thing. All that “Vick is going to be used every game” mess was smoke. The bottom line is that Vick needs to be holding a clipboard, not under center.
Why do I say that? Vick is learning and working hard. He’s getting into shape and practicing. And he will get his shot next year. Somewhere else.

The Eagles simply dont need Vick, that is why it was such a shock to the league when they signed him–why?!? They had McNabb and Kolb. The Eagles should trade him to a team that might actually need him. Maybe the Rams, the Browns, the 49ers? They could get a draft pick for him.

while I don’ agree that “you want Vick to fail”, Marie is right. Vick is not being used because right now, Philly has a tempermental and insecure starting QB (not a novelty in the NFL). Vick will never again become a starting QB in the NFL (save injury or the aforementioned “Chris Redmond” scenario). As he gets himself back into “playing shape” he will prove to be an insurance policy (QB) with the added bonus of the “wildcat” option for the right team. The thing is, prison or no prison, time off or no time off, the NFL keeps moving and players get older. Strategy and tactics change (see: wildcat) and yet every year, older players must adapt or be replaced by younger, more able players comepeting for the same paycheck. Again, dog-fighting aside, Vick was never going to see the final years of his $125 million contract. He was the real deal from 2003-2006, but under the best of circumstances it is hard to stay healthy and compete at the “Pro Bowl” level year in and year out. The true wild card question is; can Vick “compete” as a back-up QB and situational player.

You are right on the money on this Jeff…the ENTIRE country is chatting about how he’s a non-factor so this is in fact newsworthy. That being said, he has been punished both professionally and personally for what he did. It’s much easier to be hopeful for him rather than to wish he fails. Failure would likely mean more heartache for his children who have no control over their father’s past indiscretions. There are some BAD NFL teams this season – seems like more than ever. Perhaps next summer he can compete for a starting role in cities like Charlotte, Oakland or Washington. It’s not going to happen in Philly, and that’s more about Kolb and McNabb and less about Vick. Philly is good for him personally RIGHT NOW, but he’ll need to move on to find a better fit professionally. It’s big business, and keeping a guy for his price tag next year and not have him be impactful for ANY REASON is not smart.

Folks, the only reason MVick is on an NFL team is because the NFL did not want a suit filed against them for blacklisting. Philadelphia agreed to take him (my opinion) for the good of the league. Am surprised Philly didn’t shake things up by going with the Spread Eagle since they were otherwise playing as if the whole team had spent the night before the game shaking their groove things out on the dance floor of a San Fran or Oaktown night club.
Will be interesting to see how this situation evolves. Its newsworthy because we play the Eagles this season and we’ll need every win we can get the way the Saints are playing.
(Bob Ford of the Inquirer couldn’t resist the canine related puns in the excerpt. Not sure if that shows a lack of imagination or is a funny play on words. Either way, caught my eye.)
Scott Case: those of us who have been Falcons fans long before Scott Case or Jerry Glanville were part of the franchise knew that the Falcons could and would resurrect themselves in the post-MV7 era. We didn’t think it would happen in one season but believe it or not we have been worse off as a franchise (anyone remember Pat Peppler [sp.] as our coach and the dumb as a stump hillbillies as our owners?)
Until Ryan wins a playoff game, lets hold off on the praise and whether you like it or not he has yet to equal what MV7 led teams accomplished (playoff wins and an NFC Championship game appearance). Remember: people were saying nice things about Tony Romo just a couple of years ago and now most think he’s the most over-rated player around.
LET’S GO FALCONS!

HILARIOUS. You people really need to get over yourselves and get a life. Some people go through life just throwing stones at others like their lives are so perfect and they don’t do anything wrong. How sad is that?

This is a textbox example of what is wrong with sports journalism. Sports writers are too quick to react (and write) to the moment. UGA loses to UT, whats wrong with the program? UGA beats Vandy, is it possible that this program is in position to beat Florida?
Michael Vick has been out of prison for a very short period of time. Michael, and the majority of the media, appear to be appallingly naive to have believed that a person can spend two years in jail, away from the the NFL, and come back as if nothing had changed.
There is nothing wrong with Michael Vick that a year or so will not solve. Will he be the former player he was? Probably no. Will he still be a productive player in the future? Probably so.
I bet if Michael played well for the next two weeks, these same sports journalists would then tell us that he is back to his pre-jail self.

Midnite, that is a lie….email from the Falcons marketing department only a few weeks ago!
Good Morning,
I hope this message finds you well. We are two games in to the 2009 season and our Falcons stand firmly at with as many wins at 2-0. I wanted to reach out to you today regarding the NEW ticket package that we’ve started to advertise and sell. It is a 6-game package that includes ALL of the biggest games on our 2009 schedule.
The 6-game package includes the following teams coming to the Georgia Dome:
Chicago Bears – The Falcons are back in the national spotlight with the NBC Sunday Night Game of the Week here in Atlanta . The Bears will be looking for revenge after our dramatic win last season.
Washington Redskins – The free-spending Redskins come to town with new acquisition Albert Haynesworth anchoring a tough defense. It also marks the return of former Falcons cornerback Deangelo Hall. He is certain to draw some jeers from the crowd
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs appear to be down a bit this year but with a new coach and it being a rivalry game, we should expect an exciting game.
Philadelphia Eagles – This is the game scheduled on most football fans calendars. With Michael Vick set to make a return trip to Atlanta , tickets to this game may be some of the most difficult to land, especially at a reasonable price.
New Orleans Saints – The Dome is always crazy when our biggest rival, the Saints, come to town. With both teams starting the year 2-0 this game could very well be for the Division lead late in the season.
Buffalo Bills – Terrell Owens joining the Bills in the off-season has made this game all the more intriguing. Hopefully this will be a date we’re locking up back to back trips to the Playoffs!
Joining us now will most assuredly offer you an opportunity to purchase playoff tickets if we are to host a game or games this year and also get you a jump start on being back for 2010. The season has started but it’s not too late to be a part of what looks to be an exciting season. Attached to this message is our updated pricing. Give me a call if you are interested.
Best regards,

Believe me people, if the Eagles thought Vick could help them, they would have put him in the games. Apparently they are not seeing much progress in his abilities at this time. They put him at #2 in Oakland because they thought it would be a runaway and he could put in some time under center so they could evaluate him some more in real game situations. If they had left him at #3 and put him in, the other quarterbacks would not have been able to return to the game if he bombed. By putting him #2, they had the contingency of having their regular #2 in the hole. Remember, Donovan McNabb won’t be at Philadelphia forever and they will need a backup to Kolb and they would like to evaluate Vick for that before they exercise his option for next year for $5,000,000.00. I don’t think any teams right now are so desperate for a starting quarterback that they would sign Vick over who they have. If he doesn’t get more playing time, for whatever reason, I don’t believe anyone will be looking at him seriously next season as a starter. Again, if they thought he could help them in game situations the Eagles would put in him, they aren’t, so that tells you a lot about his progress. Also, this is the first time that Dungy has publicly questioned his physical abilities.

Why is Jeff Schultz so preoccupied with what is going on with Mike Vick? Does the AJC have a policy that there must be a blog or article about Vick at least twice a week to satisfy some sort of quota? Its a shame that the most popular athlete in Atlanta lives in Philly now, but I guess the AJC gotta attract these cave dwellers in GAWGA somehow.

Explain to me why there has not been another quarterback in the franchise that has won a playoff game in 13 years for the Falcons?
If Vick sucks then the other qbs are down right pathetic!
When will Ryan earn that 72-million and actually win a game that matters, like a freakin PLAYOFF GAME?
Did you know that other than Mike Vick being selected to 3 pro bowls in a 4 year span, the last qb to be selected to the pro bowl in this franchise was Jeff “been forever” George?
With all the racist, angry white people, including you Jeff, there is no surprise this franchise has and will never win a Lombardi Trophy.
Look at New Orleans, they finished last and they are the front runners for the Lombardi Trophy this season.

ESPN puts the number of people in attendance down on the box scores for every game…the Dome seats over 71,000 and if you look at the attendance for every Falcons home game, you don’t see a number starting with a “7″ at all. Just because Home Depot, Publix and Bank of America buy up blocks of tickets, in which their employees dont even care to receive, does not make a “sell out”.

For the record, for anyone who knows anything about football Mike Vick was the truth. when opposing defensive coordinators saw the falcons on their schedule, they would begin several weeks prior in preparing for him and many NFL coaches at the time verbally stated that after they lost to him and the falcons. What other QB has put that kind of pressure on a defensive coordinator…NONE.. Secondly, the main reason why the falcons didn’t go further with Vick is because Greg Knapp is one of the most if not the most predictable offensive coordinator in the league. When Michael Vick called him out on the fact that they didn’t allow him to call his own plays and audible, Vick went and threw for 7 TD’s in 2 consecutive games both for wins against the superbowl defending Steelers in a thrillling Monday night game and then a playoff contending bengals the following week and he did it with poor offensive line protection and less than average receivers. The other reasons why falcons didn’t go further were not all Vicks fault…HE DOESN”T PLAY DEFENSE people..don’t worry… you ALL will see in about 2 weeks when Drew Brees has a field day against the falcons porous secondary. The falcons were a joke team until he got here and after his downfall it took the falcons 3 years to get to this point where as he INSTANTLY made the falcons a contender…as far as his off the field stuff….LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR…I AM A VICK SUPPORTER.. I DO NOT CONDONE WHAT HE DID…HOWEVER, HE PAID THE PRICE THE JUDGE SET FORTH…YOU VICK HATERS NEED TO LET IT GO BECAUSE HE HAS JUST AS MANY SUPPORTERS AS HE DOES HATERS. Especially a lot of you all on these blogs with all this KEYBOARD Courage but you wouldn’t dare open your mouth to Vick Supporter in public…

when this deal went down, i posted on the ajc boards that this made no sense – Philly didn’t need a QB and their offensive scheme was totally wrong for Vick’s talents.
due to the their sensitive QB and his easily-bruised ego, the Eagles can’t use Vick when they really could (like last Sunday when the passing game was non-existent). McNabb will never allow Vick to play any meaningful role in that offense. and the scheme itself – West Coast style short passing game requiring timing, accuracy, and understanding defenses – had already proven to be the opposite of what Vick can handle as a QB. his QB skills are based on longer throws (he has an arm, just not very accurate) and few reads. as much as people want to bash on MV, he’s not the first strong-armed QB who lacks accuracy and isn’t that great at running a complex offense to play in the NFL. he’d be okay (not great, but definitely serviceable) in an offense with a power running game and play action intermediate/deep passing. Reid’s offense is the exact opposite of that.
at this point, this looks more like a pity move by Andy Reid to do a favor for Dungy and bring Vick on board.
i’m not wishing Vick any harm. he committed a crime and has done the time. maybe being around a HC whose own son had similar personal character problems will help him grow as a person. but if Vick is ever going to be relevant again as a player in the NFL, it will have to be on another team and it better be soon – players that rely on athletic skills more than football IQ can’t afford to sit around.

How many 4th quarter touchdown passes has Vick thrown since 2005?
Oh, I know it’s ZERO! Vick was exciting and an OK gimmick QB but he hasn’t done jack since 2005 except get in trouble. Face it co-dependants he’s finished. What has he done lately?

Was this the dialogue you were hoping for Jeff? Of course it was, what other reason did you have for this little hit job of no merit? When Vick is starting for a team in 2010, will the AJC just go ahead and devote a whole separate page for him..errr….that team? Please do, it would make it easier for the few Falcons fans that there are.

Ratherbeaneagle, why are you so obsessed with Vick selling his jerseys? Who cares, he aint doing anything in the NFL right now, plus I enjoy the Falcons much better now that they are a TEAM and each player is gettin it done and shining in the spotlight unlike before where Vick always wanted to attention, most was negative, shooting birds at fans, being disrespectful off the field, and you support this kinda trash? Wow, what is this world coming too!

Supes – How exactly am I fanning flames? By merely mentioining Michael Vick’s name? And when the Eagles come to town when with Vick, ask me again how Michael Vick is relevant in Atlanta.
Marie—I agree with you. McNabb doesn’t want to share snaps, That was one part of this that didn’t make sense, even though the Eagles are a great org. … Also, I don’t write between the lines. Never have. Never will. I have no reason to want Vick to fail.
Ryan – that would be complete disaster.
BVG – Not sure if he’s got the backpedal down pat.
Mad-Donna – Yes, that’s it. I’ve got low self-esteem. Thanks for the analysis. What do I owe you? Would you take an HMO?

What will become of MV’s football career is anybody’s guess. However, it might be instructive to look at another quarterback who self-destructed, and made his way back. I am talking about Kerry Collins. Years ago after much hard drinking, he walked away from the Carolina team in mid-season. He just didn’t feel like it anymore. After a couple of years of soul searching, and guidance from those who cared about him, he started to work his way back. Like Vick, he had to earn it. He did this by bouncing to several different teams, and each time the result was a little better, until he landed in Tennessee. Aside from Brett Favre, I believe that Collins is the oldest active (starting) quarterback in the league. Is he as good as he might have been? I don’t know, maybe he is better. But, I do know that this sort of rehabilitation is possible with time a commitment.

What has Vick done lately? He put the Falcons on the map, thats what he did. I’ve never even seen a Falcon jersey until Vick played here.
