Georgia’s problem is direction, and that falls on Richt

KNOXVILLE — The problems just became big picture.

This isn’t just about the quarterback looking overmatched or the coordinators looking lost. It’s not about the schedule or the injuries or maybe some conspiracy theories about SEC referees having an agenda because the team got too excited with an end-zone celebration in Jacksonville two years ago.

Plug in, folks. Georgia just lost to Tennessee like no team should lose to Tennessee (45-19). The offense didn’t score a touchdown. The defense just made Jonathan Crompton look like Jonathan Unitas. Lane Kiffin just schooled Mark Richt.

Six games and they’re going backward. Six games and they’re 3-3, their worst start in 13 years. And you begin to realize: If not for those late wins over South Carolina and Arizona State and surviving mayhem against Arkansas, we could be talking scorched earth at midseason.

This is when you wonder about direction. The same coach who two years ago we were toasting for finishing the season with a No. 2 ranking is now walking off the field and into news conferences looking like toast.

On Saturday, Richt was asked a question one never could have imagined two Januarys ago:  “Are you worried about the state of the program?”

His answer: “We didn’t play very good today. We haven’t had a game this season where we played a really solid football game. So I’m concerned about that.”

Is it just me, or did he not completely shoot down the premise of the question?

Let’s make this clear. This is not a “Fire Mark Richt” column. His body of work speaks for itself. But Florida and LSU and Alabama have boat-raced Georgia in the SEC, and of maybe even greater concern is the lack of separation between the Bulldogs and everybody else.

This isn’t a former No. 2-ranked team that has maintained its level of excellence. It’s a program that has regressed. Significantly. Whatever Richt was doing before is not working now. Either the wrong players are being recruited, or the right players are being coached the wrong way.

Blame Mike Bobo for the offense. Blame Willie Martinez for the defense. Blame Stacy Searels, the vaunted offensive line coach, who, by the way, hasn’t done bupkis. Blame anybody you want.

But it starts with Richt. It’s his program. He sets the tone and establishes direction. He is the one coaching at a school that hadn’t started a season so poorly since Jim Donnan’s first year in 1996 (3-5 on the way to 5-6). Richt is the one whose team committed three more turnovers against Tennessee and ranks as the worst in the conference and among the dregs nationally with 16 giveaways and a minus-11 turnover ratio.

Volunteers quarterback Jonathan Crompton threw touchdown passes on three consecutive possessions in the second quarter and finished with four. He had been largely lampooned in Knoxville and had never thrown more than two in his career. Well, with one exception. He threw five against Western Kentucky.

So that’s where Georgia’s defense belongs: in the Sun Belt.

Asked what he would think if he was a Georgia fan watching this game on television, Martinez said: “Well, I am a Georgia fan. I’m not happy. We just got whipped.”

Things are no better on offense. The Bulldogs have failed to score an offensive touchdown in 10 of the past 11 quarters. Against Tennessee, the offense (field goal) was outscored by special teams (nine points, off a kickoff return and a blocked punt for a safety) and the defense (interception return).

Didn’t Richt make his bones in offense at Florida State?

He somewhat came to Bobo’s defense: “I like his play calling.”

When asked if he felt quarterback Joe Cox was regressing, he said: “I’ve got to look at the film before I start making comments like that.”

Just as well. This isn’t the time to be throwing anybody else under the bus.

“We’ve got a long way to go before we become a good football team,” Richt said.

And he should know. He’s the one driving the bus.

Richt needs to MAN UP quick. Miller and Evans have sucked all season. It’s time to let younger players take their lumps. Joe Cox couldn’t start for Ga Southern. Logan Gray has been at UGA for 3 years and looks like Pee Wee Herman out there. Need to fire the weight room coach too. Richt just stood there yesterday with that silly smirk everytime a call went against UGA. I watched Saban and his intensity demands discipline. I saw Willie standing next to Richt in the 4th quarter like they were at a bar sipping a cold one. MAN UP Richt or hit the pavement. You can’t be everyone’s buddy during the week and expect respect on Saturday. This team continues to play soft week in and week out! I can handle losing with HEART. MAN UP CMR.

bottom line – richt is soft. he has been since day 1. we have never played with discipline. whats worse, we are 2-6 Vs. our biggest rival. and yes it is UF. We are about to be 2-7. we are now irrelevant in the SEC east. It is simply time for Richt to go. The sooner UGA people realize that the the better. To all of those who say “well who our we going to get?” or “who do you want?” I have a simple answer WE ARE UGA! GO FIND THE BEST COACH IN AMERICA AND SIGN HIM. It worked for UF and BAMA. quit making excuses and get it done! we have not played for a national title in 30 years and it is due to poor hires in our coaching staff.

well said jeff. We’re bad. We are not getting better next year. Logan Gray showed why the coaches haven’t even considered pulling Cox (who is not the problem on offense – the running game is).
Willie Martinez is outclassed, week-in, week-out. It’s difficult to watch. I hope Damon Evans will step up and fire his ass, since Richt can’t find his gnads.

With the type of offense Richt runs, he has to have a horse at TB and a stud at QB in order to be a good team. He has neither this year. Therefore, bad results. But even with Stafford and Moreno, Richt underachieved with the talent he had. He needs to apply for the head job at FSU or the OC at Miami (oh, I forgot, both have already filled those positions). Maybe Troy will be looking for a head coach for next year, because it sure appears one bad year and all the Dawg fans have turned on the “beloved” Christian coach.

Don’t sleep on Tommy Tuberville. Laugh him off, he had a 13-0 season where he should have probably played for a NC. Probably with less talent than UGA. The AU administration hated TT, not his coaching, but the man himself. However you want to look at it, he did beat Alabama 6 times in a row. I’m not saying he IS the man for UGA but I am saying that I wouldn’t marginalize him so quickly if I were you.

“UGA has played 14 Freshman and True Freshman…”

True. What does that say about the quality of the “non-Freshman” on the team?

Top Ten recruiting classes virtually every year! With that how are Freshmen able to break into the lineup? What happened to the Seniors, Juniors, Sophs both with & without redshirt years? Is it that they are not that good? Top 10 recruiting classes?

Is the UGA program guilty of recruiting for the fans (five stars in Rivals & Scout), and equally guilty of NOT recruiting the players who “best fit” the offensive & defensive schemes?

I do not know. Just a question?

It is the players who is stinking it this year. We lost Stafford and Moreono in the first NFL round. The only good players this year are Brandon Boinkin, Rennie Curran, and AJ Green. Evans does need to grow a pair to set Adams strait on how the school is to be running. Weve got to be able to recruit against SEC talent programs. If we can’t get players how can Mark Richt be expected to win. To win with better players we just need to be more Christian and then players can be forgiven off the field. Richt is UGA football and I am digusted at people wanting him fired after everytihng he does for UGA. We have to get NFL talent and Adams is preventing its.

Its like this, HairyDawg, in the cut-throat world of big time college football and even bigger money, its just like on Wall Street or Corporate America: Its what have you done for me lately, and, like it or not, Richt ain’t done much for ‘em lately. A couple more years like this and he won’t have to worry too much longer about what he’s done for ‘em lately. Being the first to lose to Master Kiffin ain’t conducive to job security. Four years. Thats how long its been since Richt has won an SEC Championship. If im not mistaken, didnt Jim Donnan recruit both David Pollack and David Greene to UGA. I think UGA will be a good time with years of going to the sugar bowl. But while Mark Richt is coach, UGA will NEVER win a national title. He has never fired an underperforming coach, and I dont see him doing so. He’s a great man that has brought us back into national recognition, but say your thanks and find a replacement. If you dont fire him, fire all of his assistants and dont give him a say in the matter. This week was a joke

agree with monte here. no way tennessee beats vandy and kentucky like they beat uga…i’ll even say they will probably lose to one of those teams. but, the loss to tennessee was not a suprise to me. i expected it. i’m not a fan that expects uga to win it all every year, but the way we’ve lost for the past two years really has me worried. will not be suprised if we lose the rest of the games…we may beat tenn. tech, but i will go ahead and say that it will be an ugly win because they’ll probably have a quarterback that looks like brady, both mannings, and farve rolled into one against willie.

The future

October 11th, 2009
8:46 pm

Richt is done after next year. 2 things will do him in. No. 1 is his inability to beat his biggest rival Florida and the same with Tech if they win again this year. The 2nd is that the 3 rivals after UF in Tech, UT, and Auburn are all on a quick rise back up and all 3 of them are now competitive with us whereas they hadn’t been in the past several years. They will get their fair share of wins as UT proved this year and Tech proved last year.

This is going to herald the end of the CMR era at the end of next season. Lets face the inevitable. This year the best we will do is 7-5 if we can win 2 of 3 against UK, Auburn, and Tech. We could easily lose 2 of these 3 and go 6-6 though.

Whoever takes over from CMR will get a mulligan and have the first year as an adjustment year. The bottom line is that it will be 4 long years before we will be competitive again. And that’s assuming richt’s replacemnt will be as good as we hope and there is zero guarantee of getting a Saban or Meyer as opposed to getting another Goff or Donnan. the future looks bleak.

Recruiting guru

October 11th, 2009
8:59 pm

Since Richt has been there when has UGA not had a top 5 recruiting class? UT has nowhere near the level of talent we have and yet they physically just laid the wood to us. I mean asskicking session.

Same with the Bammers. I read from the idiot coach smith today that when Bama whupped us last year that they had a great senior class. BS. They had 9 seniors last year because it was the last of their probation stripped recruiting classes. The asswhuppings we’ve been taking started with that blackout night when they just punched us in the nose and we backed down and submitted.

Since then we got blown out by UF, Tech pushed our D around for 4oo yds rushing, and now UT justs puts it to us. We won games because of better talent over inferior foes like Vandy but against determined, physical, mean teams like Bama, UT yesterday, and Florida this team is soft and just surrenders after getting punched in the mouth. We’re soft, it starts at the top, and aint nothing gonna change till it changes at the top.

Lets get Will Muschamp or Tommy T and get back to smash mouth SEC Football. Ever since CMR got here we have been trying to run that FSU offense from the 90’s. That does not work in the SEC. The defenses are too fast. Even when Mike Bobo was Quarterback at UGA back in the day, all he wanted to do was throw the bomb. We are A.J Green and Rennie Curran away from being 0-6. We look like a weak Pac 10 team out there. What ever happened to that intensity we had under Van Gorder. We try recruiting these “World Class Athletes”. How about we recruit some “Football Players” Track stars like little Bryan Evans can’t play football. When did wrapping up go out of style anyways? That falls on Soft Willy. We need to get some mean players on defense.

Hairy…you are right in that Richt is a good man who does a ton for UGA. You are wrong about what the problem is though. It is absolutely the coaching.

The upper classmen have all had a few years to get Martinezed on D. A player is Martinezed when they come in with all kinds of talent and potential but over time lose their edge through horrible coaching, a terrible scheme, and a complete lack of focus on fundamentals.

On offense it is different. Are we truly getting 5 star recruits? Are we recruiting the proper guys for our offense? Why does it take all the kids 2 years to understand what we are trying to do? If the kids aren’t smart enough to pick it up in a year at most, they are not the right kids. Next if the offensive system is so great, how come the entire SEC has figured it out? It seems like we are trying to fit square pegs into a round hole all the time (See our penchant for recruiting super fast little running backs who never see the field). A great coach adjusts their offensive scheme to fit the players they have. Urban Meyer is the master at this (See the different style of team they won their NC’s with). This is not FSU in the 90’s when you could stockpile talent. There are fewer scholarships available and the talent is spread out better. You need a system that great players can come in and contribute immediately. Knowshon should have taught Richt this lesson.

Someone here said that Richt would get more support if he would come out and say we have problems and I will get them fixed. Well he did say that…last year. Well it is most certainly not fixed and by the looks of it even more broken!

Our coordinators are horrible…and it is becoming more and more apparent that Richt’s early success were more a function of Donnan’s recruits and Brian Van Gorder than any program plan he brought in. A coach that is at a school as long as Richt has been at Georgia will usually instill his personality in the team. That team will have certain characteristics that are common every year. The only thing our team consistently has year in and year out is a lack of fundamentals and poor discipline. These are not the pillars that dynasties are built on.

We need to start over. The sooner the better. Mellow ain’t getting it done. Whoever said we should go after Gruden was right on the money.

[...] Richt is facing more doubt about the direction of the Georgia football program than he has since arriving in Athens in 2001. So it follows that he may have to deal with [...]

Ok. children. Stop fighting among yourself. GT is a second rate football program. A school that removes part of the seating capacity at its stadium because the other team brings more people to a game than you is second rate. I hate the fight song of Georgia. My grandpa who fought in the Civil war for the south is turning over in his grave each time Georgia’s band plays it. Every time I turn on a Georgia game on TV they have to show the film clip taken 30 years ago of Herchel Walker. Georgia can’t forever live on their laurels because they don’t have any lately. Typical Georgia fans go to the game with their beer bellies hanging over the front of their belt and the crack of their butt showing in the back. The females in Georgia have never been to a football game, but ride the roads of the state in a red 93 rattletrap with big arms with wings hanging out the window as they drive through a hamburger joint after they ordered a double French Fry.

For every excuse that can be offered up for CMR, thereare reasons why people are fed up. He hired the staff. He promoted to underqualifed and inexperienced asst. to OC and DC. He sets the agenda on the style of athelete to recruit. In the end it is not about the losses. It is about the losses came about. They have come about from a lack of preperation, a lack of adjustments, and a total lack of discipline; not just by the players, but also the staff that he hired.

We cant help all of our best assistant coaches keep going on to bigger things..Van Gorder..Callaway..to name a couple. There definately needs to be some major improvements in all areas, no doubt. Do you THINK coach Richt could have hired a top defensive and offensive coach from somewhere else? Have you looked at the GA state budget lately? Do you think those big salaries would be approved? Loyal Dawg, Maybe CMR should take a pay cut. It is not like he has earned his money lately. Also, I don’t recall CMR looking anywhere for coordinators. They were handed to CWM and Bobo. That also was before the economic recession. As far as undiscplined players… Who recruits them, and if so why have they not obtained discplined. It is not like this is the first year UGA is playing undicplined.

My point is this. CMR raised the bar on expectations for UGA football. He did that in disguise. He did that with Donnan’s players (Greene/Pollack). UGA has been slowly declining since those players are gone. That and coupled with BVG leaving. Whether CMR is a good man or not is not the issue. The issue is we have lost our last 5-6 games in an embarrassing fashion. It is not like the better won. It is all about how the games were lost. In the end the buck stops at CMR. His coaches, his players, and his mess. He can’t and won’t fire or demote all the coaches that need it. So, in the end he has to go….

Horse dung. The coaches can’t make chicken salads from chicken poop. Those recruiting ratings just show potentials. The players have to want to go to the NFL and focus on developing and exposure while in Athens. Right now Adams aint helping to get some of the sorry players off the team so the coaches can bring in better players with SEC talent and goals of reaching NFL. Adams needs to start transferring the stinky ones out of UGA or giving some of them diplomas. Maybe he can helps some of them to pay for schools by getting them jobs at lunch counters or doing gardening on campuss. The point is that the stinky players without working towards winning football and going pro need to be run off so the dawgs can start winning again. Saban and the Alabama’s president do that, and they now is winning. UGA and Adams has to step up or we will be left behinds. We wont be able to keep Richt or bring in another good coach if Adams doesnt start helping the coaches deal with players that aint there to play play football, win, and go pro. jason – “HairyDawg, If so then why do the UFs and the UAs 5 STAR recruits seem to pan out? Why is it that our 5 STARS actually turn out to 2 stars?”

Its is very simple Jason. AL and FLA have there stinky players to. They get 5 stars that dont pan out as well. The difference is that they is big enough to run off the stinky ones that dont pan out to replace them with 5-stars that win games. Until UGA is willing to run off the poor players that can’t win and don’t wants to work to play on Sundays, we just aint serious about winning football program. Thats the problem with Adams. We pays all that money on Saturdays to UGA but Adams aint helping to run off bad players and restock with 5-stars the way Saban gets helped at Bammer. Saban changed those polices once he took over at Bama, and now theys winning to.
