Here's a common sight: A Tennessee receiver (Gerald Jones) making a catch in front of a Georgia defender (Bryan Evans) Saturday. (AP photo)
KNOXVILLE — The problems just became big picture.
This isn’t just about the quarterback looking overmatched or the coordinators looking lost. It’s not about the schedule or the injuries or maybe some conspiracy theories about SEC referees having an agenda because the team got too excited with an end-zone celebration in Jacksonville two years ago.
Plug in, folks. Georgia just lost to Tennessee like no team should lose to Tennessee (45-19). The offense didn’t score a touchdown. The defense just made Jonathan Crompton look like Jonathan Unitas. Lane Kiffin just schooled Mark Richt.
Six games and they’re going backward. Six games and they’re 3-3, their worst start in 13 years. And you begin to realize: If not for those late wins over South Carolina and Arizona State and surviving mayhem against Arkansas, we could be talking scorched earth at midseason.
This is when you wonder about direction. The same coach who two years ago we were toasting for finishing the season with a No. 2 ranking is now walking off the field and into news conferences looking like toast.
On Saturday, Richt was asked a question one never could have imagined two Januarys ago: “Are you worried about the state of the program?”
His answer: “We didn’t play very good today. We haven’t had a game this season where we played a really solid football game. So I’m concerned about that.”
Is it just me, or did he not completely shoot down the premise of the question?
Let’s make this clear. This is not a “Fire Mark Richt” column. His body of work speaks for itself. But Florida and LSU and Alabama have boat-raced Georgia in the SEC, and of maybe even greater concern is the lack of separation between the Bulldogs and everybody else.
This isn’t a former No. 2-ranked team that has maintained its level of excellence. It’s a program that has regressed. Significantly. Whatever Richt was doing before is not working now. Either the wrong players are being recruited, or the right players are being coached the wrong way.
Blame Mike Bobo for the offense. Blame Willie Martinez for the defense. Blame Stacy Searels, the vaunted offensive line coach, who, by the way, hasn’t done bupkis. Blame anybody you want.
But it starts with Richt. It’s his program. He sets the tone and establishes direction. He is the one coaching at a school that hadn’t started a season so poorly since Jim Donnan’s first year in 1996 (3-5 on the way to 5-6). Richt is the one whose team committed three more turnovers against Tennessee and ranks as the worst in the conference and among the dregs nationally with 16 giveaways and a minus-11 turnover ratio.
Volunteers quarterback Jonathan Crompton threw touchdown passes on three consecutive possessions in the second quarter and finished with four. He had been largely lampooned in Knoxville and had never thrown more than two in his career. Well, with one exception. He threw five against Western Kentucky.
So that’s where Georgia’s defense belongs: in the Sun Belt.
Asked what he would think if he was a Georgia fan watching this game on television, Martinez said: “Well, I am a Georgia fan. I’m not happy. We just got whipped.”
Things are no better on offense. The Bulldogs have failed to score an offensive touchdown in 10 of the past 11 quarters. Against Tennessee, the offense (field goal) was outscored by special teams (nine points, off a kickoff return and a blocked punt for a safety) and the defense (interception return).
Didn’t Richt make his bones in offense at Florida State?
He somewhat came to Bobo’s defense: “I like his play calling.”
When asked if he felt quarterback Joe Cox was regressing, he said: “I’ve got to look at the film before I start making comments like that.”
Just as well. This isn’t the time to be throwing anybody else under the bus.
“We’ve got a long way to go before we become a good football team,” Richt said.
And he should know. He’s the one driving the bus.

Could anyone tell I had a spray-on tan yesterday? The girl at the tanning salon said you could not tell the difference but I am a little skeptical. And I really hate the way those headphones keep messing up my hair. I had to keep running my fingers through my hair to keep it fluffed up. By the way, who won the game anyway?

I don’t make 2.8 million dollars a year, but do have several season tickets. While we’re not big time supporters, I feel we spend a fair amount supporting the Dawgs.
All I’m saying is that if this trend persists, it won’t be long before people stop asking for the assistant coaches to be removed.
Surely a millionare will understand that!!!!

With bowden getting run out of town, GA better come up with some big cash to keep Richt. fSU will go after him with big money, so Ga fans better cough up more money next year for tickets and booster fees to keep Richt happy. He will want a lot more money to stay there.

No, it falls on Damon Evans. And Damon should be fired if he let’s this Richt debacle continue. Richt and his whole team should be fired — they don’t have any abilities. Our student athletes deserve better than that. It’s up to Damon, and if he’s too scared to pull the trigger, he, too, should go.

Thanks, VolFan: “…if I were a Georgia fan, I wouldn’t read too much into this. Having lost…Stafford and…Moreno, Georgia’s regression was inevitable. …The Gators are a notch above (ALL) the competition…LSU is a goal line stand and a ridiculous celebration penalty away from being the Raycom game today. Alabama got waxed by Florida…I’d steer clear of blaming the coordinators for everything…at UT and things got no better when we ran (Sanders) off. Next thing you knew, he was coaching Andre Woodsen to record setting years at Kentucky.
I’d take a deep breath before the Dawg fans create a cr*p storm of gloom and doom that does nothing but create a bad vibe and drive recruits away and on-team talent (AJ) to the NFL early…”
Okay ‘fans’, read that last sentence again please.
And good posts by LawDawg and Dog-gone.
Most of yall act like rats on a sinking ship…”…not going to contribute…”, …not gonna do this or that until__blank__. Coach Richt has one of the best records in the country over the last 8 yrs; not to mention being one of the more outstanding gentlemen in sports today. I’d also venture to say that the assistant coaches are some of the best men you’d want your sons to be around. It’s the “fans” like some (most?) of yall here that cause college football to be labeled or characterized as ‘plantation system’, ’semi-pro football’, ‘win at all costs’, ‘money-driven’, etc etc. To assume the coaches and the AD lack the desire to win is the ultimate effrontery and shows a lack of class in the extreme.
Having said all that, I do hope the winning ways return. If not, I hope CMR will make the necessary adjustments in a compassionate, gentlemanly, but competitive way.
If you’re a Dawg fan, support the team!

The issue and the solution: The obvious has been the defense regressing since Van Gorder has left, a few decent years on defense from what he (Van Gorder) built but since it keeps getting worse as the defense has gotten away from Van Gorder’s tactics and schemes.
Solution: (1)The obvious- terminate or demote Martinez, hire Kirby Smart- an alum!
(2) demote Bobo (keep him in the offense- quarter back coach) go back to Richt being the offense cordinator. These moves will put the GA. bulldogs back into National contention.

What an absurd premise. Direction of the program ? Values and character don’t waver in the heat of battle. Tactics change to reflect the conditions, but direction of the program ?
I am a GT guy and I admire and respect what Mark Richt and UGA bring to the stadium week to week. What you are seeing is the ebb and flow of competitive football. Auburn beats T, Arkansas beats Auburn, T beats UGA, UGA beats Arkansas.
The reality is all the sportswriters are starting to look like uneducated fools because their predictions are no better than the paper (or flat screen) they are written on. Obviously, you guys are not talent scouts and know very little about football…..otherwise you could make yourselves rich in Las Vegas beating the betting lines every weekend.

This article stinks, and meets the teacher’s definition of word count only – this from a Volunteer. I was at the game and things have changed on the Georgia sideline.
The answer is Brian Van Gorder. He the only coach on the UGA staff (since Urk) that brought fear to the other 11 programs. When offenses played UGa they had to figure out what in the hell was BVG going to do to THEM, and how to defend his ATTACK? Not so now on defense, or offense for that matter.
About midway through the 4th Quarter the UGA defense was sitting on the bench, whipped. We never would have seen that from a BVG team. He convinced – demanded! – Georgia defenders hold their ground like, well, bulldogs defending their pups.
The day he left made this season inevitable. Good luck rekindling that passion in the program.

First of all, if you keep responding to other people who write on this blog, please get a life. Anyway, I agree with anyone smart enough to know we only need to get rid of CMR if he is not willing to make some major changes in his staff at the end of the season. OC, DC, ST coach need to go I don’t care if they are his best friends or not. The loyalty has to stop. We should really see how much Kirby Smart like’s coaching for Saben. He has done an excellent job with that defense, he’s firey, and he is one of our own. I have no idea on a OC, or special teams coach, but I know there are better options than what we have right now. I really thought Bobo would be better than this, I mean how many wide reciever screens can you run in a game? If you are not confident enough in the QB, to throw the ball downfield. then get him out of there. We must have ran the same four or five different plays on offense all day. Where is the play calling? Really 4 or 5 different plays, look at the tape and tell me i’m wrong. With where we are in the season it is time to at least start getting some guys ready for next year. Namely, At the QB position. Aaron Murray should be thrown to the wolves for the rest of the season just like we did with Stafford mid way through his freshman season. Let him take his lumps and we will be better for it next year. Keep Ealey and Samual rotating at RB. Carlton Thomas is just to small, and King is to injury prone and overated. We need consistancy in the backfield. Decide who that guy is and let him play. On defense, if brian Evans can’t do any better than what he did yesterday, then the senior should spend the rest of the season being a cheerleader on the sidelines, and the same goes for you too Rashad Jones. Take your overated senior leadership to the bench. start playing the young guys who were so highly recruted and want to make a play. CWM can you please put our guys in better positions before the ball is snapped and maybe we won’t be made to look so stupid by a QB who usually throws more int’s than TD passes. CMR we need you to put the teams best interest first before your commitments to the staff you have assembled. Use your brain and not your heart and you know what changes need to be made. Go Dawgs!

I would love to be a fly on the wall during the coach’s meeting today. I listened to David Greene take the slings and arrows yesterday on the post-game show. He did not offer a defense of what had taken place. He let the callers vent, sort of like what has happened on this blog, except that half of these posts are not Dawg fans but other fans who are gleefully piling on. And that is fine, this is an open forum. Greenie spoke about CMR’s apparent lack of emotion. He said he does shake down players or coaches on the field. He said he saves it for the team meetings. Now I doubt that he screams and froths at the mouth. I imagine he is more like an old boss of mine that would ask questions and look directly at you while you made a response. No screaming but definitely holding you accountable. I want to hear what CMR has to say on the radio Monday night. I am not ready to turn in my diploma and burn my apparel. My UGA flag is still flying in the yard. And my street is one of the main entrances to my neighborhood. I will be watching on Saturday for a spark that will ignite this team.
Yes we are 3-3. Yes we have been out-coached and out played. But I have made this point more times than I really want to. If we had an internet in 1979 both Coach Dooley and Coach Russell would have been out of a job. Joel Eaves would have been bombarded with e-mails. Herschel Walker would have never attended UGA. I hate this season more for the players than I do the fans. The players caught heck on Campus in 79. I don’t imagine it is much different today. A friend of mine quit the team before Spring practice because he thought it would be the same in 80. He was a walk on, not a scholarship player. He made it to New Orleans at the end of the 80 season, but not as a player.
I have no idea where Coach Richt lives. I am sure there are some in Athens who do know. I wonder if he got the same treatment Coach Dooley got the Saturday night after the Homecoming loss to Virginia 31-0. There were about fifty “For Sale” signs in Coach Dooley’s yard that Sunday morning. A friend of mine went to the Five Points barber shop the next week. He told the barber to shave his head. The barber asked him why. He said he had lost a bet that Georgia would beat Virginia. He said the team just rolled over and played dead. He said the team just has no heart and the coaches are a joke. It got real quiet in the barber shop as the barber started shaving his head. The man two seats down finished got up, paid his bill and told everyone to have a nice day. Coach Dooley then left and walked out to eat more humble pie. The conversations in the barber shop then continued.
Coach Richt and his family will hear it every day this week any where they go in Athens. I feel more for his kids than I do for him. He is an adult, they are just kids. They won’t like nor understand the comments they will hear this week about their Dad. As a father myself, I feel for his children. It will not be easy.
Go ahead and vent, gripe, laugh or pile on. Send e-mails to Damon Evans. If you contribute, it is your money, withhold it if you want. I would rather watch and see what happens. But that is just me. It does not make me a better or worse fan than any other. Have a great day to all and GO DAWGS.

Ok, I am amazed by some of the excuses about “youth” & “inexperience”. Will someone explain to me the definition of coach, because apparently that has nothing to do with the equation (according to the blind loyalist). The fact is Mark Richt earns in the top tier of SEC coaches and he should be held accountable for his teams lack of success/progression. If he chooses to neglect the fan base and boosters, by not making the long due changes on his staff, then he must go. He is no different than any other CEO and he should/will be held acocuntable. He has been given way too much levity and his REFUSAL to get rid of the worst DC in the SEC is unacceptable (Martinez on statistics alone should have been let go 2 years ago). Bobo is not that much better. The recruiting classes have been top ten 5 out of the past six years, so that should provide talent & depth.
We should be in a yearly situation were we “reload” & not “rebuild”. You REBUILD when you have little to no depth & talent…I don’t see how anyone can argue that point. This staff as a whole has DRASTICALLY underachieved with the tools provided. They have RARELY made players/teams better & have gotten by with a lot more talent than coaching. We demand excellence, we demand change…and no I am not talking about change we can believe in, I am talking about REAL change.

I said in this column last week that UGA was not that good a team. The three wins could have easily been three losses. UGA’s “glory days” are rapidly coming to an end and there is nothing Mark Richt or any one else can do about it. In fact, this could be true for most of the SEC. Florida is riding on Tebow’s back, Alabama has been steady and will only get better, LSU is in transiton, but has a coach who can stem their slide. And South Carolina, next week at ‘Bama will tell the tale, but I feel they have finally turned a corner. The Vols will be back under Kiffin, while Auburn will be good, but not great. The rest of the SEC is a toss up, with occassional scattered upsets. This conference best days was 2 years ago. Everyone else is catchin up fast.
UGA is at best a “middle of the road” team and will contnue to be medicore for the next several seasons. I’m not surprised that UGA got whipped yesterday, I saw this coming weeks ago!

Some of the morons on this site know nothing about football. To win games we has to have better players. It aint the coaching when our players stink. Richt and the coaches cant do so much with the stinky players. We have to get players with SEC talents and speeds. Then we have to Christiaize them to be able to forgive them for legal problems like jails and cheating in schools. Weve got to get rid of Adam because he and his school keeps us from bringing football players with the talents.

Georgia always has top 10 if not top 5 recruiting classes. Why are we in a “rebuilding” year as some have suggested, or so young? This is not CMR’s 3rd or 4th year, we should not be “rebuilding” this far into his stay at Georgia. Richt better get his butt in gear and start coaching these players up, as it appears we are getting quality atheletes. As it stands now Richt is only the second best coach in this state much less the SEC.

Ga’s problem is they don’t have all these real physical studs that Dooley used to recruit back in the 1970s and 1980s, guys like Meat Cleaver Weaver, Thurston and Woerner. GA needs to find a way to get these types of players back in the program, by relaxing the academic standards. That developmental studies program worked great and they should bring it back, and get more players in the program who can help beat florida and bama. Until then, Ga will keep losing to these mediocre teams. Damon Evans better start doing something, or he can hit the road too.

Michael made the points that the silent majority of the Bulldawg Nation believes…thanks!
What was mots disturbing about yesterday…and National media outlets noticed as well…was that the team QUIT.
It is time for CMR to let Cox become a coach…he has under thrown almost every pass this season…and give the kid a break. The heat is only going to get worse…and Cox as a kid does not deserve that kind of treatment…
As for all of you defense bashers…remember, it was only last week that the defense was lauded for their play against a Top 5 team…the defense is too often put in to positions where a field goal is a victory…
The offense has lost the confidence of the QB…it shows in the line play, the way the receivers run routes…everything! And if the offense has lost confidence, you can bet the defense has as well. As I stated earlier, it is time to protect Cox the person…
Yes, this team IS young…and, with a few breaks, the season can still be successful….but CMR has to set the tone…either by shaking things up with in the coaching staff…or with the players…by letting them know that changes WILL be made if the attitude does not…
A team this talented should not be allowed to QUIT!

Enter your comments here ok, well as being a life long georgia fan , i do have to say that our coaching is absolutely terrible . our players are not put in a position to be able to compete with the better sec teams. im not going to harp on the coaching , because i believe it goes deeper than that . how many of you watch the games and ask yourself , why are the other teams bigger , stronger , and faster? i looks to me like we are getting our tails whipped physically , as well as mentally. it doesnt do any good at all if we recruit these 4 and 5 star players, if they are not willing to take it from high school to the college level.our players look fat and slow along the defensive and offensive line. our linebackers are also over matched physically every game , unless we are playing a patsy on saturday. our running backs lack the instincts it takes to be really good backs, which brings me to another issue . do we just recruit dumb players? how many times have you seen one of are players make a stupid play? too many ? back too the original subject. i agree we lack direction, in every aspect of the game , but especially in the mental aspect of the game . i would rather have a 3 star recruit that is intelligent over a 4 or 5 5 that is just plain stupid.

We’ve got good recruits, a great tradition, a legendary program. What we don’t have is inspiration. The coaches don’t look inspired to win on the side lines, the players look confused, and the players are not executing their assignments. Sure we should put a lot of the blame on the coaches (pick one from column A and two from column B) who evidently have not coached their squads correctly, but you also have to put blame on the players.
Joe Cox has been lucky to throw some amazing passes, but he’s not accurate. DB’s cheating up and letting the WR’s get behind them…the list goes on. It’s time to change up the players, get more spark to the team on the field, and let the ones displaced go play for another team if they so desire. We need to start playing guys that really want to win. There is a lot to be said about attitude over ability. You can always teach ability if that person wants to win!
(BTW, did you notice the Bulldog players smiling after the game when the teams were mingling on the field? The coaches should make those players run laps til they drop! YOU LOST THE GAME! Don’t be happy about seeing your old friend. He just kicked your team’s butt!)

In flipping back and forth between the Tech and Florida game last night, I could not help but notice how both Florida and LSU’s offenses have also incorporated some “gimmick”, “high school type option” plays while georgia (and their infamous pro style offense) seems to ridicule. And I loved Bowden’s comments about how they could not figure out our offensive system all night long, while it appeared to take Kiffen about.03 seconds. lol.

You guys are pathetic- every year you suffer from irrational expectations. Have you ever considered that maybe your team just sucks and it has nothing to do with coaching? Of course not. That would be too much to admit that this team just sucks. Its all Martinez and Bobo’s fault! UGA just plain sucks. And no one is that surprised by it except for irrational UGA fans.

“…why were our lineman so outclassed . who’s the strength coach ? is someone getting complacent ?…”
“…game was lost in the trenches. Our offensive line allowed them to play in our backfield all day. I just believe that there’s a bigger problem with the plays that__(Off Coord)___is calling. He didn’t slow down the pass rush with screen passes, shuffle passes or draws. He had__(QB)___sit in the pocket instead of rolling him out…When is__(OC)___ going to realize that running__(RB)__ behind a line that isn’t opening holes is no way to win a game?…”
“…totally disgusted here…where is the offense,,boils down to play calling and we dont have it..it was the same old bulll sh## time and time again..no new ideas…”
“…Our defense did okay, especially when spending most of the game on the field. It’s our offense that really sucks bad…”
“…your still able to talk and type stupid remarks. Go home and shut up fool, its only football idiot…”
“…The fact is this offensive line is horrible. They continue to get holding calls and false starts. The run blocking is anemic. I think some changes might be coming…they must fix the offensive line problems…”
“…____ looks really good whenever they play against a weak opponent, or a nobody school, but put them against a GOOD team and the difference in quality becomes quite apparent. They are consistently over rated..”
“…Unforgivable. The__(HC)___needs to apologize over and over to the fans as he and__(OC)___the genius have not done their jobs. No amount of excuses by lame fans who drink the koolaid is acceptable. Fundamental football is what we are not playing. This is what the coaches coach for all of that money. The offensive line doesnt block consistantly. A master of the choke…”
Above are SOME of the comments this morning at the Times-Picayune in N.O. from LSU fans. Notice not one wanted to fire Miles nor any asst coaches.
