Limbaugh, cont.: Guess who just said wrong thing again?

Everybody's favorite potential NFL owner just opened his mouth. Again.

Everybody's favorite potential NFL owner just opened his mouth. Again.

The thing about having blogs with open commenting from readers is it allows you to see immediately what touches a nerve. Some subjects are obvious. The three that come to mind: college football, Michael Vick and, well, college football.

Now, I can’t say I was stunned when Rush Limbaugh fans charged up the hill like torch-carrying villagers Tuesday after I outlined the reasons why he would be a nightmare as an NFL owner, amid reports he was in a group bidding to purchase the St. Louis Rams. But the venom spewed by his blind loyalists after I referenced things he had actually said and done was beyond amusing.

So attention Dittoheads: You should love this.

I was pointed to a website called MediaMatters.org, which I had never seen before. It includes an audio clip from just TODAY! In short, Limbaugh rails about the possibility of a one-cent sales tax to fight gang violence, but in the process refers to basketball as “the favorite sport of gangs.”

“My question — OK, a one-cent sales tax to fight gang violence. What do you spend the money on to fight gang violence? After-school program — don’t we already have after-school programs? Don’t we already have — what do you call it, extracurricular events? Midnight basketball — I mean, we’ve done it all. We’ve taken the favorite sport of gangs, and we put it at midnight to get them on the basketball court.”

The website did a little research and also noted this Limbaugh quote on the NBA from 2004:

“Call it the TBA, the Thug Basketball Association. … They’re going in to watch the Crips and the Bloods.”

Remarks like this obviously are going to upset NBA commissioner David Stern more than they will NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

But I repeat what I said yesterday: Is this the kind of owner Goodell wants in the NFL?

Gotta go now. I believe I hear the villagers congregating.

Not hard to see why he would be a nightmare…he gets paid a ton of money to say things that are polarizing, controversial, or .

When ESPN tried the Limbaugh experiment, he couldn’t keep from saying something polarizing, controversial, etc. So it is logical to think he will do that again.

It has nothing to do with politics or which side of the aisle he sides with – it is about whether shock jocks can make the transition to ‘jobs’ where the shick jock mentality is a liability.

I agree with Jeff on this – he will stick his foot in his mouth and cause trouble for the league at some point – just like any other shock jock would.

You’re right on with the “shock jock” analogy. A shock jock wannabe that is on the outside looking in and wants to move from C List status to A List status by being linked to a professional sports organization.
Rush Lintball is irrelevant in society and the thought of it is making him more delusional by the day.
It’s just a matter of time before this guy steps off of the deep end.

Boy did Rush hit a nerve. I like some things he says and detest other things that he may say, but in this matter, he is pretty much on target. Not all players fit in this catagory (especially the older more established players) but the younger ones coming up give credence to his statement. Sorry Jeff, you got this wrong. Or is it because he said something that you did not say. But over the years Jeff, I’ve seen your left side, bleeding heart, bed wetting thought process.

Rush has a website where you can do your own research, even get a glimmer of context. Otherwise you’re going to sound like “ignition” – completely uninformed.

You’re fighting a losing battle, Schultz. Rush fights for individual liberties and minimal gov’t regulation and taxation, i.e., what this nation was based upon. The reason he is so wildly popular (and hated by the clueless) is that he built a niche exposing the liberal media bias.

When Rush got busted for pain killers, he took complete responsibility. Of course, most libs reserve their compassion for their own kind. Anyone else with a drug problem is a hero.

Watch the libs on this blog follow the lib recipe. Ridicule, lie, villify. When and if Rush turns the Rams around, whatsay then Mr. Impartial?

If you are foolish enough to believe that Media Matters is an unbiased website then you’re free to be that naive. I don’t see where you can stretch from his comments about these programs that Rush is saying the NBA players are all a bunch of thugs. That 2004 comment was probably after the brawl in Detroit when I think alot of people were making low brow (and deservably so) comments about the NBA. To their credit the NBA is substantially improved its image and reputation since those days. Again Media MAtters is an organization founded by dems. Hillary Clinton during her campaign clamed credit for being a part of its origination. So sorry Jeffy. You’re that gonna have to dig a little deeper. Isn’t that what “journalist” are supposed to do.

Jeff, you do a disservice to many people (incl. yourself) who admire Limbaugh’s worldview, even if it conflicts with your own, when you accuse them of being “blind loyalists.” Do you think that’s fair?

I would be tempted to give the benefit of the doubt to some of the posters on here who are liberal by not insinuating or otherwise calling them “sheep,”–to Obama, to Pelosi, to whomever. Nor should it occur in reverse.

By the way, you’re teetering on the precipice of a cliff you may not want to fall over, if people do indeed forego your column–and the subsequent page impressions–because of any ‘loyalties’ you may have.

I understand that politics and sports sometimes intersect, but Limbaugh’s bid to buy the Rams can hardly be disqualified by the Moral Relativism so popular on the Left simply b/c he IS right, factually, about basketball and gangs. Surely you must know that, no? I suppose not and reasonable people can disagree, even if you’re wrong (what other sport holds the cultural appeal of the inner-city, where gangs are predominantly located–than bball?). The NBA has indeed had a problem for years with personal conduct, as did the NFL, which responded with its more stringent accountability rules.

Besides, as you well know from your experience with the money-losing AJC, business, whether it be Baskin-Robbins or the Rams, is about making money. Perhaps that would be the end result of all of this and not some political conspiracy to force the Rams to Afghanistan?

What about NHL, MLB and NASCAR???

October 7th, 2009
9:39 pm

@ “C. Tampa Ironworse, Eric and others,

Is the NBA the only sports league full of “thugs”??? Every reference of the NBA being a “league of thugs” usually mentions Ron Artest. Have there not been instances in all of the above leagues similar to Artest’s situation? Ironically, in a few of the “pure as (white) snow” league, fights are actually ENCOURAGED. They are part of the draw that fans crave. Why is it okay for two worthless backwoods stock car racers to fight or two poorly train pugilistic hockey players to scrap but not two 6ft+ black ballers??? When NBA fight, they are portrayed as animals with unchecked aggression while both MLB and NASCAR are promoted as family sports. I will guarantee you that much like Artest, if a grown man throws a beers on me, he can expect a monumental A$$whooping. No fan has the right to throw a beer on any player just as no man has the right to toss a beer on any other man in any situation. Hell, NASCAR has had a “METHHEAD” driver on their tracks racing at close to 200mph, ha! Atlanta’s own Chipper Jones fathered a child with a (brainiac) Hooters waitress while married. Yet, he’s still a pillar of society in the good old south.

I guess this is really Jeff’s way of telling us all that every owner in sports is perfect, has made no mistakes, nor ever offended anyone, at anytime, in the history of their lives. To that I say, AWESOME! Had no clue we had such great owners in American professional sports.

He can call Rush a racist but we cannot label him a Liberal, interesting. Seems the proof is only in the pudding for the beholder.

BTW, for what it’s worth, I work in a profession that focuses on gangs and it just so happens that most sports-related gang-related activity happens in…you guessed it…basketball. Of course the vast majority in the inner city, but basketball none the less.
That is why you have three times the security at high school basketball games versus any other school sanctioned sport.

For people who actually LISTEN to his show, not get their “information” second-hand (that includes YOU Schultz), Limbaugh is a very knowledgeable and passionate pro football fan who would likely be an owner devoted to excellence in the front office and on the field and would spend the resources to make it happen. He would also be committed to keep the team in his home state of Missouri.

btw, in spite of the manufactured brouhaha on his ESPN McNabb comment, in the end he was correct in that assessment.

As far as the NBA, other than the few ubiquitous superstar personalities (Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Shaq), there’s not much there for the casual fan to get excited about. Professionalism of the players is at an all-time low. David Stern has done well to hold it up under increased mass market apathy and worse player behavior.

You have to love the love how the left wing moon bat idiots have come out in mass to spread their vitriolic hate of rush…..

Hahha….You fools are such suckers, but you don’t even know it.

So sad.

Though I’m not a supporter of Rush and some of his views, I do listen to his show and I actually do agree with what he said about the NBA. Stern is no idiot, he knows that he has to sell this sport to corporate sponsors (especially overseas) but the image of the NBA is still a “thug” league unfortunately. They see guys like Carmelo Anthony and Lebron James sporting tattoos and that image sticks with the paying public.

They see millionaire athletes like Stephon Marbury make an absolute fool of themselves on Youtube and people wonder why they aren’t as respected as stars in other sports.

Call a spade a spade, and the NBA does have an image problem that no dress code will make go away.

I agree; Limbaugh is interesting to listen to, and at times funny. But he runs that mouth so much, exaggerates so much that he would cause controversy and detract from the team. He should stay with what he does best. Politics.

Ok, I’m confused. I literally can’t stand Limbaugh but this is what you quote him as saying, “We’ve taken the favorite sport of gangs, and we put it at midnight to get them on the basketball court.”

That is factually and unequivocally true. Go to any gang hangout and see what they’re wearing. Heck, go to a Hawks game and sit in the Club section sometime and tell us what you see.

and Joe M, what kind of “actual research” have you done that demonstrates that h.s. basketball games have “3 times” as much security as any other sanctioned sport?

wait a second, I guess I will believe that when carver high school goes up to norcross to play wesleyan, there may very well be 3 times as much security due to the paranoia of the parents.

jltmilaftw – Oh, with Ben it’s innocent until proven guilty. Is that how it works?!! When it is other athletes you are ready to throw them in the fire before they even go to court. Then after they are found not guilty you still want to crucify them. See how things are turned around for your benefit?

I can’t wait till all of you left-wing journalists are unemployed…which is not far off big guy. Rush was 100% correct but that doesn’t matter to you. It is the HEADLINE that you like….what a joke you continue to be.

I agree that Rush says some outragous things, and I certainly do not agree with many of his comments. However, if you think that MediaMatters.org is a resonable site to obtain reference material, then you probably would love MoveOn.org and HuffingtonPost.com. And while you are at it, you may want to stop by your local ACORN office for advice on buying a house to use for illegal purposes.

Wow, this is actually getting fun here. Any chance we could up the ante by talking about families choosing not to attend WNBA games because of the makeup of the typical crowd in the stands? He-He-He…I’ll bet this gets some reaction!

Your headline states that he said something wrong. Yet I see nothing incorrect about what he said. What is it that you see that is wrong? Okay, maybe gangs would PREFER dog fighting or boxing, but in reality, it seems to me that they actually do participate in basketball more than any other sport. It’s possible that I have this wrong, Correct me, please.

Anyway, the NBA competes for eyeballs against the NFL. Mr. Limbaugh constantly promotes the NFL on his radio talk show. If his recent comments deride the NBA, it seems to me that this is EXACTLY the kind of owner that Goodell would want.
