Countdown horrors: Bowden’s exit, Limbaugh’s entrance

The Count answers to no blowhard

The Count answers to no blowhard

The Count can sympathize with Bobby Bowden. Not many realize this, given his smooth skin and youthful appearance, which probably is the result of extra plasma and never going out in the sun. But the Count made his first public appearance in 1972. Over the last 37 years, several executives have tried to run him off television in favor of a more modern-looking math instructor. Say, a talking calculator.

But The Count has endured. Why? Well, for one thing, there’s no imbecilic chairman from the board of trustees on Sesame Street running his mouth. Pretty sure somebody tried once but Oscar and Cookie Monster went all Sesame Back Alley on him one night.

If only Bowden was so lucky. We count down . . .

10. So I guess this means there’s no gold watch?

This was Jim Smith the first time he tried to become Governor.

This was Jim Smith the first time he ran for Governor.

Don’t take this as an endorsement for Bowden hanging on at Florida State for another 10 years (or at least until Joe Paterno is the first to fall face down in his oatmeal). But you don’t do this to people. You don’t do this to Bowden. Some two-faced, corporate weasel, dweeb — I couldn’t decide, so I figured I’d use all three — named Jim Smith came out publicly and said “enough is enough” when it came to Bowden’s future. He basically tried to announce Bowden’s retirement for him in the aftermath of another FSU loss Saturday. Smith is the chairman of the FSU Board of Trustrees. He’s not some drunk fratboy in the student section. So he doesn’t even have that excuse. Bowden deserves to go out on his own terms. He certainly deserves better than this, as his wife, Ann, was only too happy to tell the Orlando Sentinel: “I’m angry. … And for them to turn their back on him like that — I don’t care if he is 80 years old . . . They used him . . . and to me, that’s so disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to who he is, what he’s done and I think it’s very disrespectful of Jim Smith.” And about that Jim Smith.

9. Smith was the worst of both parties

Bowden has run a few trick plays in his time, but never saw this one coming.

Bowden has run a few trick plays in his time, but never saw this one coming.

There’s only one thing less trustworthy than a politician: a politician who changes parties. He started out as a Democrat and was the Florida Attorney General from 1979 to 1987. He ran for Governor in 1986 but lost in the Democratic primary. So he switched to Republican and ran for Governor again in 1994. But again he lost in the primary. I guess at that point he decided against joining the Green Party and figured he would just try to coach football. Bowden should’ve been watching his blindside.

8. Maybe it will all make sense one day

OK, OK. Brett Favre threw three touchdown passes and the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Green Bay Packers, 30-23, Monday night. ESPN got what it wanted, a Favre victory to cap the 48-hours of Favre this-is-your-life buildup. But I maintain hope that he wakes up this morning with a boil on his endzone. Until then, I shall continue to open the Big Book and look for reasons for the existence of the world’s great tragedies: famine, plague and Favre’s comeback. (By the way, kudos to ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, who actually said in the post-game, “This summer, Favre became the F-word.” Wow. He must’ve not gotten the network memo.)

7. How would the Paul Hornung rap have gone?

OK, this is when I sound like the old guy on the porch screaming at the neighborhood kids, “Get off my lawn!” But Georgia plays Tennessee this week and I just came across a rap video the Volunteers produced to publicize their Heisman Trophy candidate, Eric Berry. I don’t have a Heisman vote any more. I gave it up several years ago. But if I still had it, I’d probably be less inclined to vote for Berry after seeing the video below. It’s complete with dancing coeds and a rap by Vols hoopster Renaldo “Swiperboy” Woolridge, who delivers such lyrics as, “Eric Berry. Don’t be scary.  Tell the other team, ‘Homey, don’t you dare me.” Maybe Dogs fans will like this line: “So QB. You can try to fool me. But I got game. You can ask Vince Dooley.” Oy. This apparently is the FOURTH video Tennessee has produced, as well as a website. I think I liked it better when they just tried to buy my vote with a postcard or a coffee mug.

6. The Rush to misery tour

We go from rap to Rush Limbaugh (sorry for the whiplash.) Limbaugh is part of a group bidding to purchase the St. Louis Rams. I didn’t think it was possible for a franchise to take a step back from once being owned by the late Georgia Frontiere, a former Miami dancer who married Carroll Rosenbloom and inexplicably inherited the team after he mysteriously drowned while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. She then fired her stepson (Steve Rosenbloom) as the top team executive, ran the Rams into the ground and moved them from Los Angeles to St. Louis. But yeah. This beats that. (Continued)

5. A drug-abused racist should go over well at owners’ meetings

"Sometimes I can't believe the things that come out of my mouth!"

"Sometimes I can't believe the things that come out of my mouth!"

Rush Limbaugh as NFL owner? Wonderful? He has first-hand knowledge of being criminally investigated for drugs after his abuse of prescription painkillers (OxyContin). He had that great stint with ESPN, during which he basically accused the media of going soft on Donovan McNabb because he’s an African American quarterback (and word of going “soft” must’ve been news to the Philly media). And maybe he can do one of those NFL United Way commercials, given that he accused actor Michael J. Fox of exaggerating his Parkinson’s disease. And finally, he’ll be a real popular guy in the locker room for playing a satirical song, “Barack The Magic Negro” (sung to “Puff the Magic Dragon”) in 2007 on his talk show. Yes, just the kind of good-will ambassador  NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is looking for.

4. A Dog fan off the chain (and his meds)

A few weeks ago I posted a video showing an overly depressed suicidal Clemson fan after the Tigers’ loss at Georgia Tech. This one hits a little closer to home. A painted Georgia fan, via the media food chain (College Digital Network to YouTube to Deadspin). I can’t explain this guy. I’m not even certain of his species. I’m just glad my son is not in the student section sitting next to him. By the way, this actually was from before the South Carolina game. Also, it’s worth sticking it out to the end because of the simple and amusing conclusion.

3. Coverage for fire, theft and Peeping Toms?

Defense attorney Rick Beuke, who represents the creepy slimeball, Michael Barrett, who’s accused of videotaping Erin Andrews through a hotel key hole, says his client has a good track record at his job with Combined Insurance Co. of Glenview, Ill. The company has been “very supportive,” Beuke claimed. Here’s my question: Does Barrett sell homeowners insurance, because something tells me he’s done his last home inspection.

2.Ilya Kovalchuk, and the rest of your Winnipeg Thrashers!

See this street? It's sort of like the Peachtree of Winnipeg.

See this street? It's sort of like the Peachtree of Winnipeg.

In case you missed it, the week didn’t pass with another rumor of the Thrashers moving, this time to Winnipeg. It was quickly denied. Let me start by saying that I’ve been to Winnipeg. Think of Macon without the glitz. Even people in other parts of Manitoba don’t move to Winnipeg. They’d rather sit in the middle of a prairie and think, “Wow. This is boring. But at least we’re not in Winnipeg.” First time I went to Winnipeg, the long-time Los Angeles Kings broadcaster Bob Miller turned to me and said, “You’ve never been to Winnipeg? It’s not the end of the world but you can see it from there.” The Thrashers’ future probably is less certain than any of their 97 owners would publicly admit. But NHL commissioner Gary Bettman would rather have any of five or six other franchises move to Canada than the Thrashers. He doesn’t want to lose the Atlanta market. He’d just rather the market be in more capable hands than it currently is.

1. Nice show of appreciation, guys

The Braves held a Fan Appreciation Weekend to end the season. They were swept in a four-game series by the Washington Nationals. I can only assume if more fans showed up, they would’ve seemed more appreciative.

“……but Oscar and Cookie Monster went all Sesame Back Alley on him one night.” GREAT LINE!!! It’s a shame that Coach Bowden is gettin’ the treatment he’s getting! I thought, from the outset, that FSU has mishandled this situation. A guy like Bowden SHOULD get to leave on his terms! It’s a shame!

Florida State has been waiting for five years for Bowden to gracefully exit. In that time… 5 losses, 6 losses, 6 losses, 4 losses and so far this year 3 losses.

He’s disengaged, there’s turmoil inside the program and recruits are revising their commitment to the university.

How much longer do they need to wait on a man who’s well past his prime? A man who is fixated on a selfish goal at the expense of the football program.

There’s nothing special or unusual about this. Stars often don’t know when it’s time to leave the stage. Like Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott, they need to be pushed. Bowden has abused Florida State’s patience. Now it’s time for a push.

I was just thinking to myself while I was reading about the Falcons: Man, why isn’t there any political stuff mixed in with my sports? Thankfully that problem has been fixed. Thanks! How about a health care opinion from Jeff next time? Maybe Jeff can explain his thoughts on the Middle East peace process? WE MUST KNOW WHAT THE SPORTS DUDES THINK ABOUT WORLD AFFAIRS!

Not impressed with the soundtrack of the Eric Berry music video. That said, I knows talent when I sees it.

If the chicks doing the dancing in the vid agree to trade their UT eye black — for UGA doggie sttttttyleeeee ackshun — I’ll allow them an audition for the “Theodore Striker Home Video Series, Season 8″

But it has to be all of them. I’m all about equal opportunity.

Let’s see a historic prairie town being compared to the historic heart of Georgia’s music heritage and the gateway to the coastal plain… Hmmm… OK, Macon generally likes a higher class of visitor; but next August, come out your myopic metro Atlanta bomb shelter and come to Bragg Jam in Macon ( http://www.braggjam.org )… You’ll never crack that joke again… And Winnipeg is not the same place the Jets left… Two words: Oil Shale… Now think the famous Dave Chappalle line: “I’m rich b**tch!!!”

Schultz, we get it: you’re a PC, guilt-ridden white liberal. What I don’t understand is why you insist on alienating a significant portion of your readers with unnecessary forays into political commentary.

But, since you did …

1) There’s no question that the NATIONAL media has treated McNabb with kid gloves for most of his career. If you can’t see that, you must be one of those buffoons who thinks that Obama is beyond criticism. Speaking of Dear Leader …

2) Are you aware that Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro” parody was inspired by the “Obama the Magic Negro” headline which appeared on an L.A. Times column written by black lib David Ehrenstein?

3) Are you aware that Fox has admitted that he sometimes skips a dose of his medicine for dramatic effect?

4) Why do you and your fellow libs seem to derive so much pleasure from Limbaugh’s drug problem?

Bonus question: why don’t you and Jay Bookman move to Vermont and get hitched?

On Jim Smith … the fact Smith went public with the internal concerns FSU officials feel in regard to the direction of the program under Bowden after his peak years are beyond him is disturbing. Granted, Bowden has hung on too long and should have done the university a favor at least three years ago and stepped down for pride alone, but this is being handled about as well as the Tom Glavine situation. I see similarities among their fan base with those of the Atlanta Braves, in that it doesn’t matter what Bobby Cox did for us as a GM/Manager since his return in the 1980s.

On Brett Favre … yeah, he got his win over the Packers on Monday night, but all well be well in the world once again if Green Bay takes the game at Lambeau later down the road. After all, we all know that is the one Favre really cares about at this point. It’s the only reason he’s still playing.

On the Eric Berry video … weren’t these types of marketing tools passé when Da Bears did the very first one in 1985? Scoot over, Jeff. Maybe I need to sit in the other rocker on your porch and have your back when you yell at those kids. My wife always said she married an old man, even when I was 25.

On Limbaugh and the Rams … Feel bad for the Rams in this case, but didn’t we feel bad for them already anyway? Move along, nothing to see here.

On the Dawg fan … miss a few haircuts and start a lengthy steroid program, and Vince McMahon could promote him as the Ultimate Warrior’s son in a few years. Good Lord, I bet his parents are proud.

On Rick Beuke … I have nothing, really, so long as he spends the most appropriate time possible behind bars, hopefully, with his neighboring cellmate making him feel as violated as Erin Andrews must have felt.

On the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg or anywhere … it’s all on Don Waddell’s shoulders to make things happen for this franchise, and unfortunately has been since, well, 1999. How about we just send Don Waddell there if his off-season moves and possible inability to re-sign Ilya Kovalchuk don’t work out as well on the ice as they look on paper?

On the Braves … I only hope and pray that we see the 15-2 surging club next season and not the one that fell asleep when it mattered most, and worse, four games that didn’t matter against the worst team in Major League Baseball.

By looking at the posts above i’d say sticking to sports would be the route to take.
Speaking sports, Bowden and his undisciplined team have finally imploded, Just another example that all the speed in football can’t win games on a consistent basis. I hate to predict it being a DAWG FAN, but Ga. Tech will embarrass the Noles this weekend adding fuel to the Bowden fire.
My opinion Eric Berry should be in the running for the Heisman, this RAP video don’t help him any though. Besides with ESPN’s courting of Tebow, does any other player stand a chance? No!!
Jeff, stick to sports and humor, they’ll get you a lot farther being a polotician.

I have called him a racist.

I have blamed a fight on a school bus between a black and white child on our President.

I have openly rooted for the President of the United States to fail, as early as one month into his Presidency.

I was gleeful when an American town was not awarded the 2016 Olympics.

I would no more like to hear a right wing viewpoint from a sports columnist as I would a left wing one. Some of us like to go to the sports section of the paper to escape the constant political harangue we receive everywhere else. Yes,it’s true that Rush said what he did, but ESPN hired him for his commentary and knew that he was a very political and was bound to say something political eventually. rush is a lot of things, but he’s not a racist. most people who don’t like him are jealous of him. and if you think he won’t go over well int he nfl because he had a former addiction to painkillers (prescribed by his own doctor), then you should think again. the nfl is full of drug abusers, wife beaters, felons (burress), steroid users and other low lifes who have done much worse than rush ever did. And he was correct about mcnabb. the media do soft pedal black qbs who don’t succeed just because of their color. The truth hurts sometimes, and the truth is that Limbaugh is wildly successful because people agree with him. It just so happens that people are also envious of his success because their forms of media (printed newspaper) are going down the tubes due to reduced circulation.

So, there you have it: clear, indisputable, overwhelming and convincing evidence of another AJC extremely liberal sportswriter who hates conservatives and those who believe in earing it and embraces those who believe in entitlement and perverse behavior. Now, the real question is who is Jeff Schultz? All I know is there is nothing in his bio (see “more on Jeff Schultz” at the top right of this blog) about a wife, children or other conservative values, grew up on the left coast (LA), and his is a noted defender of Martha Burke, leader of the National Organization of Lesbians.

Schultz, sometimes your funny, every now and then you show some small sliver of an inkling that you know a tiny bit about sports. But one thing you’re ugley missing is that it is precisely because politics are left out of sports that many, I would guess most, avid sports fans follow it and engage it so joyously. Tis one of the last bastion’s of politics-free zone’s that exist, so let’s try to keep that way shall we? If a millionare entertainer wants to invest in a football team, as long as someone is willing to sell it to him, he has the right to. Period.

Jeff,

Your comments on Rush were straight out of the Democratic Party’s playbook on him. It is obvious that you have never listened to his show for any extended period of time. Why don’t you put aside your liberal biases and listen for a couple of weeks? What you will find is a man that cares deeply about his country who has a very funny sense of humor and a real love for NFL football. Who knows, you might even agree with him from time to time!!!

One more thing – why did you choose to pick on his addiction to painkillers? He became addicted (like many, many people) due to severe back pain. He checked him into rehab and got off the pills. I guess only liberals are given sympathy and a chance for redemption when it comes to drug abuse.

Another “Bowden deserves to go out on his own terms” to go with Barnhart. Great. Maybe he’ll decide to coach until he’s 90 even if he needs somebody to help him find the stadium. Poor old Bobby, he’s won a lot of games and it’s his right to run the program back into the ground since that’s where he found it.

I think Rush Limbaugh is a demagogue gasbag but you’re allegedly a sports columnist and I don’t think most people have any interest in your political views.

Easy on Rush Jeff. Many people with injuries and former injuries get addicted to pain meds. He paid the price. But like him or not, he donates a lot of money to charity and does a lot to support our men and women in uniform. And quite frankly, I read your “columns” for their sports intuitiveness (not sure if that’s a word) not their political musings.

Monte you nailed it. Nice job. And nice of jeff s to alienate a large base of his readers. This is why you don’t interject your political beliefs in sports. One or two sentences about how you think it’s a bad idea is fine. To try and discredit a guy over stuff that is not true shows your intention. Jeff you need to “open your mind”. Funny how you omit positive things Rush has done. I guess you just used the liberal template for bashing any popular conservative. Nice job.

Schultz – “Open our Minds” – are you kidding me? I don’t think it is your readers minds that are closed. You paint Limbaugh as the worst guy on the planet with no mention of a lot of good things he has done. If a big liberal in sports came out and admitted a drug addiction and got help for it like Rush did, you would say they were a hero and should be looked up to for their ability to overcome it.

If your mind was open, you would have worded the article something like this – “Pontential for controversy” Rush Limbaugh, who has long had a deep interest in pro football is part of a group looking to buy the Rams. While he obviously has the money and has very successfully run his business, Limbaugh’s highly outspoken views are certainly controversial and could stir up some problems, both within and beyond the organization.

Gee, somehow I showed that the man could cause problems without coming across as a left wing dailykos and huffington post reader with a very “closed” political mind.

The sports section of the ajc was the the only thing I ever read here anymore because this paper is so ridiculously liberal. Now it just looks like you have replaced Terrance Moore. So, this will be the last time I read your blog. I’ll stick with the guys who stick to sports.

Jeff: Your subsequent post for Rush supporters to “Open your minds, people. Open your minds. There’s a big world out there” are truly offensive. If you spent anytime (at all) listening to Rush, you would know that that is exactly what he is all about. Instead of ducking and covering, you have decided to stoke the fires even more with your insult to his 20 million listeners a week. He has a radio show that requires him to speak his mind for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Over the course of 20 years or so, things will get said that will be taken out of context by ill-informed people like yourself. You on the other hand have the luxury of sitting down at your computer and choosing words carefully before finalizing your articles. You did not do so in this particular case when it came to Rush and you have compounded your mistake by issuing your subsequent posting smearing his listeners. There IS a big world out there, Jeff. I hope after this outrage you’re employer gives you the opportunity to move on and explore it.

Jeff,

I think you did a disservice to two cities when you compared Winnipeg to Macon, putting both in an unfavorable light. Others are better equipped to speak about Macon but it was pretty low using Winnipeg as the butt of a cheap, second-hand joke (especially from an LA Kings sports announcer). I realize that cheap, second-hand jokes are what your columns rely on, but there should be a limit – except maybe for the jokes about Rush Limbaugh – who I think is fair game since he reaps what he sows.

I lived in Winnipeg for 7 years, including the time when Winnipeg had the Jets and Bobby Hull (I know, it kind of dates me). I enjoyed my time there. It’s a great city with wonderful inhabitants and with a tremendous cultural environment. Great theater, an excellent, well-supported symphony, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, which always got great reviews touring Russia and a lot more. It’s surrounded by wonderful lake country and great hunting and fishing. What’s more it has great sports fans and, in particular, it’s a great hockey town.

And it’s not like I haven’t been around. I’ve also lived in London England, Vancouver BC, Ottawa Ontario, San Francisco, Dallas and Boston. I have to say, though, that I’ve now lived in Atlanta and the South for 22 years and it’s my favorite place of all. So I don’t want to see the Thrashers leave at all, even to Winnipeg, but an NHL team could do a lot worse than end up there.

Now here is the main point. I tried to give you some good advice about death threats, but you seem not to have heeded my good advice. So I will try once more. You really will get a lot of death threats if you delve into politics. Schultz, if you don,’t take my advice now, get a bodyguard.

Gdawk – Perfect visual.

DP – Rush pontificated on football and he’s bidding for an NFL team. I do believe that makes him fodder for a sports columnist.

Gravy Train – Actually, I don’t think Thrashers are a drain on Hawks. If you look at relative expenditures and revenues over past several years, it might be the other way around. Hawks do have some playoff revenue of late, though.
