The Jackets have issues, but Jonathan Dwyer created positive foreshadowing in last game.
Sometime today, Mark Richt and Paul Johnson will speak at their weekly news conferences and assess for the world their respective football teams to this point. And if either has actually figured them out, that puts them ahead of the rest of us.
I’ve covered two Georgia games (Oklahoma State, Arizona State) and two Tech games (Clemson and Miami). I saw most or all of the other ones on TV. Both teams leave me thoroughly confused. Also somewhat dizzy.
Tech has extended its personality changes from half to half (vs. Clemson) to game to game (awful vs. Miami; great vs. North Carolina). So I guess that’s progress. At least it leaves a week between games for therapy and makes for easier billing with the insurance company.
The Dogs can’t seem to figure out what they want to be: a solid defensive but offensively inept team (Oklahoma State, Arizona State), which makes it easy to dump on Mike Bobo or Joe Cox (or both). Or a relative video game (South Carolina, Arkansas), built for thrills and maybe the WAC, which makes it easy to dump on Willie Martinez.
Bottom line: Both have issues. Neither looks like a BCS bowl team. But if I had to take one over the other right now, I’ll take Tech. Here’s why:
♦ The Bulldogs are too erratic, too sloppy (minus-nine in turnovers) and still take too many penalties to lead me to believe they have any shot at beating No. 4 LSU this week, or certainly upsetting Florida. Two other games that once looked like gimmes — Tennessee on the road and Auburn at home — now look like potential landmines. And Tech has to be favored to win the last game of the season at Bobby Dodd.
♦ For Tech, I’m assuming the Jonathan Dwyer we saw before the North Carolina game was an aberration, and the one from last week is the norm. The defense is not great and probably won’t get a lot better. But if the Jackets run the ball, that keeps opposing offenses off the field. Further, Tech doesn’t have a can’t-win game on the schedule. The toughest opponent is No. 6 ranked Virginia Tech but that game is at home in a few weeks. The next most difficult game on the schedule is at Florida State, which just lost to South Florida.
The Jackets could always blame fatigue (three games in 13 days) on their worst performance of the season at Miami. I’m not sure what Georgia blames its worst moments on, other than just not being very good. (If Cox had the flu in Game 1, what did he have in Game 4?)
Right now, it’s looking like Tech will be the better team at season’s end. Agree or disagree? I’ve put up a poll if you want to vote, as well as comment.

BigMike- why would Calvin have wanted to go the UGA? He went 1st rd in the draft and is now becoming a star in the NFL. He also got to spend three years at a top 10 public university and is on track to get his degree from that university when he chooses. How would having gone to UGA have helped him?

As the old professor that brought football to UGA, I hate to agree with you, but I do – mainly due to coaching.
Tech has a coach that reminds me of Wally Butts, specifically, someone who gets mad when players don’t act mature or when they don’t perform their assignments on the field of battle.
UGA has a coach who would make a lovely son-in-law and church youth group leader.
So long as CMR is at Georgia, we had best settle in the our 2nd tier status and enjoy our holiday trips to the Music City Bowls of the world.

Got to love when it all the GT’ ers start talking about a program in decline, and what an empire PJ has built at Tech. Get real, PJ has been at Tech for one full season, which was okay. Howver, you got embarassed in the Peach Bowl. UGA is one of the most profitable programs in the NCAA, so let’s not start talking about a program in decline. We hear the same Sh*t every year how Tech is this Tech is that, and at the end of the season same ol excuse. Wait til next year. UGA will continue to be a dominent program in the state and the nation. Say what you will about last year, that was last year. UGA is coming NOV 28, and no matter what our record is it will not be a good day for Tech.

Well let someone tell you, UGA didn’t go into 2 nat’l championship games and have ther behinds kicked up and down the field, when Uga was clearly the best team in the S.E.C. in 07, and got jumped in the ratings by a team number 7 in the country, while we where #3, and while OSU plays a mildly weak schedule year in and out (including the last 2 UM squads) UGA consistently plays tough opponents. Know your stuff and then blog, until then SHUT THE BLEEPIN “F” UP!!!!!

As I told Tony B yesterday, you guys just don’t do your homework. You spout off, then post your statements of ignorance. I see it is Jeff’s turn today.
Jeff, who would you say is the better team between Mississippi State and Georgia? I’ll wait. Now, who played LSU last week and had four, count them, 1… 2… 3… 4, four turnovers last week against LSU? Okay, I better help you on this one… Mississippi State. And how close were they to beating them?
Yeah, okay, now tell me who on MSU’s team equates to the players UGA has on Offense? Can you? No, I didn’t think so, though I would take Dixon as an argument, that is for sure.
So, if MSU can play LSU close, and an LSU team that is struggling with the running game, cough….35 yards last week… cough, I would have to say UGA has a better than a coin flip chance against LSU. I mean, it isn’t like LSU has done anything to date this year. And against UGA the past three games, because if I go further back it won’t help my argument, so bare with me, the average score is something like 43 UGA to 23. Yeah, those don’t matter this year, but what have they done?
And GT…. the long run, huh. We shall see. They should just count their blessings as they can’t pass the ball period. At least we know UGA has the ability to throw the ball, it has been proven. We know for a fact GT can’t.
With Caleb King shaking the rust off, look for him to be a pretty solid RB.
Oh well, everyone is entitled to an opinion but sometimes people who speak without all the facts straight, well… their opinion gets filed in the trash can.
That is 1… 2… 3… 4… Jeff, come on, I know you can do it. Then again, you might think Mississippi State is the better team than Georgia.

Let me be the first today to state the facts and undisputed truth-fact1-Tech will never be equal to Georgia in football due to the types of football players UGA recruits.fact2-Techies think this is a rivalry because they win 1 game a decade, that is not a rivalry-the hatred between the two fanbases make it special. If tech wins 3 or 4 in the next 10 years, then maybe.Tech will lose 3 or 4 more games but will not play in the peach bowl due to the most embarrasing game ever played in that bowl. They will not be invited back for many years.I predict a bowl probably played in early Dec.fact 3-Georgia has looked sloppy this year and has not played well in any of the four games, still have won 3.I believe they could still win 10 or 11 games if they clean up penalties and lack of focus at times.Mark Richt seems to have LSU’S number.

Too many variables to know what these teams will look like almost 2 months from now. The Tech-UNC game last year showed how vulnerable this offense is to breaking down with one key injury (i.e., Nesbitt).
Despite all of the problems that you cite, UGA has found a way to win those games against USC, Arizona State, and Arkansas.
I’ll say this much. I do like our coach. Seeing the job that he did adjusting both the offense and defense between the UM and UNC games proved a lot to me. The man knows what he’s doing. Our previous HC would have stayed the course (and probably lost).

I’d say 59/39/5 and 7 out of the last 8 makes teck UGS’s bitch. Always has been and always will be. The fact they recruited someone like you is exactly why or maybe you were a scout team walk on.

ChrisinIndy, are you slow? The quality of athlete is on the decline at UGA.
Tell me which of these is not a quality athlete:
AJ Green(So), Orson Charles(Fr), Aron White(So), Tavarres King(So), Rontavious Wooten(Fr), Caleb King(So), Branden Smith(Fr), Brandon Boykin(So), Bacarri Rambo(Fr), Sanders Commings(Fr), Marcus Dowtin(So), Justin Huston(So), DeAngelo Tyson(So), Aaron Murray(Fr), Justin Anderson(So), Ben Jones(So), Cordy Glen(So), I am sure there a re a few more,
but that is a list of folks that are starters or get considerable playing time in the two deep rotation. Notice, moron, that they are all true freshman and true sophomores, maybe one or two is a redshirt, but I think I am fairly accurate.
Georgia has not lost its way in recruiting, not one bit. You will see this same team next year, that is, on offense, but with a different QB, but with three Elite 11 QB’s on the roster awaiting there chance, I think we will find someone to fill the shoes of Joe Cox.
UGA isn’t going anywhere. And the only place Georgia Tech is going is to swim in the same place they always swim… 7-9 win seasons, and a secondary Bowl and no ACC Championship. But time will dictate that, wont it.
A team has to be able to throw the ball, Tech fans, as it won’t win you an ACC title if you don’t. Yes, an occasional game, but no, not a title.
Go DAWGS!!!
Not Disappointed

Obviously both teams can use improvement.
As a tech fan, I use defend pup’s QB Cox, but now I’m not sure. The dogs have to allow Logan to place a series or two. Not just against a second tier school, but he needs the experience from the sec. My brother, the Dawg or Dawgs and I attended the spring game in Athens. I’ve seen some improvements, but there’s room to grow!
Now, to my beloved Jackets, I saw a total different game last Saturday. Lots of room for improvement, but the Scoreboard didn’t reflect the play on the field. I saw for the first time, that the Jackets are capable of lining up with any team and winning. The Jackets too must play assignment football. Yes, we ran more yards last year in the lost to North Carolina; nevertheless this year we only gave up one big play on Defense. We have a good team that can do some damage in the league This Year!
In closing, I rather see both teams progress through out the year. After all, “Most of the players are from our home state!”(Heck, I hope the pups beat the Gators with Tebow playing)
I just pull for my Alumn to win. I don’t care about blow outs. Just win the game.
As usual. “Ramblin Wreck and a Helluva Engineer!!”

Toates–this season signifies the decline of the UGA athlete.
A mediocre season and another loss to Tech will severly hamper UGA’s recruiting, especially in GA. Recruits are starting to see the simple truth: If I go to UGA, it might help me get into the NFL, but I will not be playing for an elite team in the process. I will be playing for a mid-pack SEC team with below-average coaching and a fan base that is never satisfied with my performance.

Ouch – you Tech fans get riled easily. Grant Field was downsized after you left the SEC and then moved to the ACC since Tech could not fill it playing an indy schedule from 1965-1977. Moving to the ACC didn’t help much in 1978. Only after you won part of the national title in 1990 did Tech take steps to enlarge it, and it took until 2001 to start that project. As for M – was UGA really ranked # 1 when Tech beat them last year?……You guys are worse than sportwriters, you never check any facts. UGA wasn’t even # 1 when they played Bama last year, much less when they played Tech……
