Countdown cleansing: Mora, Bowden and Wrestlemania!

Sorry. Until this morning’s blog on long term projections of Tech and Georgia football, I hadn’t blogged since the Georgia game Saturday. I was off Sunday and then it was a soul-cleansing day for the Chosen Peeps (as well as relative religious hanger-ons like me) and I required 24 hours of prayer and fasting before my soul was allowed to go back to square one. Actually, I should come clean here. It wasn’t quite 24 hours of fasting. I sort of blew it with the two, post-sundown beers at the Steve Wynn/Baseball Project show Sunday night at The Earl. But then I compensated for that with two more post-fast beers at the Steve Wynn/Baseball Project show Monday night at 40 Watt in Athens, where, by the way, every R.E.M. member was in attendance and every one played (Mike Mills, Bill Berry, Project band member Peter Buck), except for Michael Stipe. He sat in the back of the room, just being Michael Stipe. I know. With those Day of Atonement beers, I’ve got no shot at a nice room in the afterlife. The Count tells me I might as well get used to the smell of brimstone now. But on the subject of cleansings, let’s count down, shall we?
10. The real Jim Mora returns
Maybe he should turn the hands around and put them over his mouth.
Jim Mora had some spectacular public meltdowns as Falcons coach, and went completely psycho with the it-sure-sounded-like-he-was-serious radio interview when he said he wanted to be the Washington Huskies coach –while the Falcons were scrambling to stay in a playoff race. But his greatest undoing here was he got too close to his players, which ultimately led to a lack of discipline and accountability in the locker room. Well, it appears Mora has gone in the other direction now. Kinda, sorta.
9. Somebody must’ve kicked him in the head
After Seattle lost to Chicago, 25-19, Sunday, ostensibly because Olindo Mare missed two field goal attempts, Mora threw the kicker under the bus. Excerpts: “No excuses for those,” Mora said. “If you’re a kicker in the National Football League, you should make those kicks. Bottom line. End of story. Period. No excuses … Not acceptable. Not acceptable. Absolutely not acceptable.” He’s right, but that’s not the point. The Seahawks have a lot of problems other than their kicker. Secondly, a coach just doesn’t do that — a point somebody must have made to Mora later, because the next day be backed off his comments and praised the kicker, adding, “I think I let the emotion of the game get to me in my answers about Olindo.” Really? You, Jim? Some guys are just not made for being a head coach. Methinks Mora is one of them.
8. Bowden: wrong recruits, wrong playbook
Bobby, they're telling you to go that-a-way.
More cleansing needed: Forgive some FSU fans what they must be thinking about Bobby Bowden. Florida State destroys BYU, then loses at home to South Florida, half of whose roster is within a three-hour drive of the FSU campus (quarterback B.J. Daniels went to high school in Tallahassee). Bowden and offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher are getting hammered again by fans and media. Here’s the best summary I’ve seen, from Chris Humphrey’s blog in Tampa’s Creative Loafing: “Daniels looked exactly like the kind of kid Florida State used to make famous. The crafty kid who could dismantle an opponent not only with his arm and his legs, but with his mind and his will. Now Daniels wears USF green and there wasn’t a Seminole in the stands who wouldn’t have preferred him in garnet. Heck, half of them probably would trade Bowden for [South Florida coach] Jim Leavitt at this point.”
7. I miss Freddie Blassie
I admit it. I watched wrestling on a small black-and-white TV on a UHF channel in my room on a UHF channel when my mom thought was asleep. And how come the ref was never looking during the eye-gouging!?! I bring this up because the Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that Atlanta is bidding for Wrestlemania XXVII in 2011 for the Georgia Dome. Gary Stokan of the Atlanta Sports Council said, “This has the potential to be a huge economic impact,” and I suppose this is where Snooty Sports Fan asks the question, “How much money can a trailer park and a Shoney’s bring in?” But, sorry. It’s fake but it’s funny and entertaining and I’m all for it. Here’s part I of a past “title” match between Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior.

6. With Wrestlemania, you get Divas!
It's just another boring SEC vs. ACC argument.
These are some of the WWE Divas. There are many. This is one of the few photos I figured I could post without getting suspended (but I can’t stop you from Googling). Besides, they’re wearing college jerseys in this shot, so I figured, hey, I’ve got the college sports argument working for me. “But, Julia! I had to run it. I got the SEC and ACC into one blog item! Page views! Nice shoes, by the way. Yes, I am a pig. But I think admitting that up front puts me ahead of the curve before next year’s spiritual cleansing.
5. Parcells pays the price (sympathy anyone?)
Umm, can I get a do-over?
Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington is injured. Again. He won’t be coming back. Again. A few weeks ago, I played Hindsight Is 20-20 Theater and remarked how Bill Parcells should be catching heat for passing on Matt Ryan in the draft. That heat just got turned up. The only drops if Chad Henne, a second-round pick, can rescue the 0-3 Dolphins. (By the way, is Miami the first team in NFL history replacing one Chad with another? And do you want that distinction?) I just heard Chris Mortensen say this on ESPN: “Dolphins fans want to see something out of Chad Henne. Otherwise, guess what? They’re going to be talking about Matt Ryan for a long time in Miami.” Where have I heard that before? By the way, here’s why Parcells never should have counted on Pennington. His games played stats since 2002: 15-10-13-3-16-9-16-3.

Terrell Owens has been pounding Rodney Harrison in interviews and on Twitter for past steroid/HGH use. (Just one: “So Rodney, I’m thinking if u overnite it 2day, I’ll get em by 2morr @ noon. Better yet, mark it Priority!! I “really” wanna b a CHAMPION like u!!”) Personally, I have a far greater concern. Owens didn’t have a catch Sunday and he’s the third receiver on my Fantasy League team. Dude, I don’t get points for your Tweets.

I’ve vented several times in this space about the Twitter thing getting way out of hand. The NBA is considering coming down with a policy, and the NFL could follow. (By the way. Commissioner Roger Goodell has a Twitter page. Could be fun during CBA talks, but I’m not getting my hopes up.) Anyway, here’s the latest: Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has banned his players from going on Twitter after some players took shots at the program — and him — following Saturday’s loss to Houston. One, sent by player Marvin Williams said, “Wondering why I’m still in this meeting room when the head coach can’t even be on time to his on[sic] meeting.” Sweet. For the record, scholarships are not automatically renewed.

Laughed at Rick Reilly’s piece on the written test given to the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, in which he posed some of the questions to players. Here’;s an exchange with Keith Brooking. “Reilly: List three lean proteins.” Brooking: “Like, foods?” Reilly: Uh, yes, foods. Brooking: “Tuna fish. I don’t know, man.” Didn’t he go to Georgia Tech?

Remember when Oakland head coach Tom Cable reportedly broke the jaw of assistant Randy Hanson in a training camp fight? It turns out some of the Raiders players snuck a laptop computer out of the facility and gave it to the banished Hanson so that he could give them tips. John McGuinn, Hanson’s lawyer, said, “Al Davis doesn’t know he has been providing detailed coaching for these guys, and randy has not gotten any credit for it.” Yeah, well. I think he knows now.

As an FSU fan, I agree with your point on dissatisfaction with Bowden. But Humphrey is wrong about BJ Daniels. The Noles didn’t bother going after him because they had their eyes on a far greater talent: EJ Manuel. You’d think a Tampa blogger would have a clue about FSU recruiting. Sure, a lot of talent comes out of the panhandle, but FSU miraculously still has the ability to recruit nationally.

Murpheys is apparently clueless about FSU recruiting, which is shocking given the fact he’s from Tampa. Instead of getting BJ Daniels, the local 3 star recruit that year, the Noles got a 5 star recruit by the name of EJ Manuel from Virginia. Sure, BJ looked great on Saturday, but he’s not on the same talent level as EJ.

Jeff, 80,000 people were at Ford Field for Wrestlemania 23 and left somewhere in the neighborhood of $29 million spent in the city (what the city did with the money after that, I can’t say). Considering the GWCC isn’t exactly booming with conventions right now, doesn’t it make sense to go after this?
P.s. The coverage of Wrestlemania XXIV was on the front cover and the sports section of the Orlando Sentinel. But they’re probably losing money too, so what do they know?

Wrestlemania will be the greatest thing to hit this city since Sherman. I have to get into shape so that I can get back into the ring against my old nemesis: The Nature Boy. Meanwhile, I am wrestling tomorrow night at a slighty smaller venue: the pool room of Smokey’s Tavern in Lavonia, Georgia. The match will be at 7:00 PM. $2 admission at the door; $1 admission if you bring your own beer to the event. I will be wrestling a guy who sort of looks like Jeff Shultz. This guy’s name is” “Winey Sports Writer Masked Man #4.” Maybe it is Shultz? Well if so he will receive my dream elbow drop. If anyone would like an autograph from the American Dream you can stop by my room at the Red Eagle Motel in Hogansville, Georgia, between the hours of 3 and 4 pm. I can usually be found sitting near the plastic kiddie pool. Man am I excited. Can’t wait for Wrestlemania in my own backyard. Watch out Nature Boy!

Take a chill pill, The Rain. This is a blog which is not journalism. Blogs are to journalism what sports talk radio is to the truth. If you really want something close to journalism, buy the print edition. Although both blogs and print are covered by the first amendment, you’re more likely to get sued by someone if they read a lie in a newspaper than online primarily because there are over 100 million web sites versus 1,500 newspapers.
Funny stuff, Jeff. Keep up the good work. Only next time, try to save the excessive back-patting—did you do it so much with respect to Pennington and passing on Ryan because it’s warranted so infrequently?
I still prefer the wrestling days of the American Dream Dusty Rhodes and Abdullah the Butcher with Gordon Soley [sp.] doing the announcing.

If EJ Manuel were worth the lofty acclaim he recieved as a recruit he would be playing. Either that or FSU coaches have gotten absolutely terrible at coaching. I’d say it’s a little of both based on the recent results. I wonder when FSU fans will figure either out? They think they keep getting all this talent but fail to realize recruiting is most times a crapshoot. It would also help to keep players eligible or get them qualified to enroll. FSU has had a lot of trouble with both lately.

I’m wondering why Marvin Williams has a “scholarship” to a major university when he can’t spell.
We won’t even get into the issue of a why a player would think that it’s O.K. to disrespect his coach in a public forum.

Jason, all that Wrestlemania money Detroit collected we now know that it went to fund the following: Kwame Kilpatrick’s booty calls on public time. He figured public time should be public money, right? and then the rest went to fund both his girlfriend and his legal funds. Oh and don’t forget the million dollar fine he had to pay “back”. Plus the plane ticket Detroit bought him to go live in Texas.

I was with my Grandmother Taylor who told me not to be scared that he would not hurt me. Very popular guy at the time. In 1965 I had a choice, I could go with my parents and sisters to see the Beatles, or go to see wrestling at the old city auditorium. I chose wrestling- Sputnik Monroe vs Dick The Bruiser. What a night of entertainment for a 14 year old boy.Walked to the event from the Henry Grady Hotel. Were any of you there!

Even after the four neurotic UGA games, can’t say I wholeheartedly agree with the assumption of Tech in November. Jumping on that prediction for either team seems 50-50, depending on who shows up.

And professional wrestling? I agree 100 percent. It’s fake, but it’s entertainment. Nice shot of the Divas in the college jerseys. That clearly took some time and effort on your part to select such an appropriate picture.

Sounds like FSU is evaluating talent like UGA…Richt/Bowden, birds of a feather. Or, are they just not able to coach them up? As a life-long Dawg fan, I just don’t understand how we can consistently have top 5 signing classes and be so mediocre on offense and terrible on defense. Or, maybe is it because we have become inbred in our coaching staff, just like FSU. Anyway, just my opinion. Peace.

Tim ‘Mr. Wrestling #1′ Woods died on November 30, 2002, at the age of 68. Johnny ‘Mr. Wrestling #2′ is alive and well, living in Hawaii, but he did just do a brief stint of appearances here at some locally run independent shows over the last month during his annual trip to the mainland. He’s been a good friend for years, and appeared on one of our aforementioned shows earlier this year. Go to GWH and dig up the archive. You’ll be glad you did.

I was watching Rasslin in the days of Ed Capparel and Promoter Paul Jones. Great to see a reference on here to Sputnik Monroe. He had a brother Rocket Monroe and wasn’t there one more brother? I liked it when it was a battle of good versus evil but don’t care for the Vince McMahon stuff, too cartoonish. For me, it all finally died with the passing of Gordon Solie.
Three lean proteins? Lean beef, lean pork, chicken. Next question.
If Tom Cable were a player instead of a head coach he would have already been suspended. Could it be Roger Goodell is trying to get on firm footing for an Al Davis lawsuit?

Yes, there was Sputnik, Rocket, and Flash. I was friends with Sputnik up until he died just a few years back, and am still friends with Rocket, too, who remains in the Atlanta area. We actually ran a tribute site to them as an extension of GWH. As noted before, feel free to check out the site.

Sting in the WWF? Never happened… He performed exclusively in the old NWA/WCW territories… Rich and Chef Tim Dix drop names, but they always leave big voids in their info… The old Fred Ward promotion out of Columbus was one of great NWA territories on the 2nd level of the old wrestling promoters. Unlike Billy Graham in Florida, The Sheik in Detroit, the Von Erich’s in Texas, and the Crockett’s in the Carolinas, Wards promotion was a step below those.
So Jeff Schultz, did you watch the old “Wrestling from the Olympic” programs or the Mexican wrestling programs?

Been to the GWH site many times, it has a lot of good information, still the Macon information is way off base… You guys need to contact Don King (not that one, but the old WBML radio announcer). He was the TV announcer for Ward’s old Macon Wrestling program back in late 60’s and early 70’s. He’s knows about as much as anyone on the post Gunkel-Ward-Jones (NWA Georgia Championship Wrestling) era.

Since you brought up Ed Farhat (AKA The Sheik), there is a great documentary on him called “I Like To Hurt People.” It came out in 1985 and I saw it in Michigan at film festival while was in college there… You (Jeff Schultz) must have seen him when he was performing at the Olympic back when he was feuding with Freddie Blassie?

I met the Sheik a few years ago on the tram in Hartsfield. Guy was in a wheelchair trying to sign autographs for anyone that would take them. Poor fella. I do remember him on Saturday TV when I was a kid, though.

Paddy, transitivity is an assumption… your argument holds zero ground, and QB’s play against defenses, not each other. EJ will play as a senior @ USF in 2012 and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Our team is a reflection of our coaches and that is a dysfunctional unit of men way too old to coach good football day in and day out. Thankfully a much needed culture change is on the way and we get a chance to return the favor in Tampa. I could care less what Vegas thought, you ask the majority of Noles who know they inner workings of this team and they expected USF to win, we’ve been going through this an entire decade… there are no more surprises and there are no upsets if you really know how far this ship has sunk. JIMBO 2010, CHANGE IS ON THE WAY!

and yes, BB will be drug out kicking and screaming… he is scared to death of life after football, and who wouldnt take 2.5mil a year to ride around a golf cart and shake some hands? I hope its open auditions once he goes!! Sign me up… JIMBO 2010.
