Fortunately, Dogs aren’t about impressing pollsters anymore

I'm assuming after kicking the game-winning field goal, Blair Walsh and teammate Drew Butler (13) were thanking somebody upstairs and not declaring, "We're No. 1." (AP photo)

Let's assume Blair Walsh and Drew Butler were not declaring, "We're No. 1" after the win. (AP photo)

ATHENS — If after one game you were convinced that this would be a dreadful season, and after two games you figured maybe the quarterback wouldn’t be so bad after all,  and after three games you once again were ready to catapult Willie Martinez out of Athens, out of the state and out of a job, well, guess what? They’ve come full circle.

Maybe it’s best to just not assume anything about Georgia this season — certainly not an easy victory.

Blair Walsh kicked a game-winning 37-yard field goal as time expired Saturday to give the Bulldogs a 20-17 win over Arizona State at Sanford Stadium. And that’s really all you want to know without a bottle of Tums.

Given that this is a bottom-line business, the Bulldogs will try not to think about how they got there. There was an offense that committed three more turnovers, leading to 14 of the visitors’ 17 points and left the team at a minus-9 in turnover differential this season. There also was an offense that produced only two field goals (and the three turnovers) in 10 possessions after two early touchdowns.

joec

Joe Cox completed only 12 of 23 with two interceptions after the first quarter. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC).

There was bland and unimaginative play-calling and a stunning decision by coach Mark Richt to pass up a potential winning 45-yard field-goal attempt earlier in the fourth quarter to go for it on fourth-and-one (and the play was stuffed).

Good thing nobody is paying attention to polls this season.

“You’d like to think you’re progressing over the last three weeks,” Richt said. “It’s almost like we’re that record that gets stuck and the same things keep happening over and over again. The good news is at the very end we’ve been winning. We’d like to remove some of the drama if possible.”

The defense was strong. That would be the good news. But somewhere it is written that you should not be tied with Arizona State in the fourth quarter on your home field, particularly after leading 14-3 in the first quarter.

Haven’t figured this team out yet? Stop trying.

It was far different circumstances when these teams met at this time a year ago. The Bulldogs still had national championship aspirations. They won in  Tempe 27-10. It was one of their best performances of the season, setting up meteoric expectations for Alabama week.

Then came the blackout. Then came the knockout. Bama jumped to a 31-0 lead and it was over. Neither the Dogs nor expectations were the same the rest of the season.

That wasn’t an issue Saturday. The season-opening loss at Oklahoma State smothered the rankings talk early. The wins over South Carolina and Arkansas were fun to watch, much like cartoons are fun to watch. Great offense, no defense, too many penalties and turnovers and exploding body parts.

The game was tied 17-17 when Georgia got the ball back with 5:40 left. But on first down, Joe Cox threw behind A.J. Green right into the hands of safety Jarrell Holman (who earlier returned an interception for a touchdown).  This one he brought back to the Dogs’ 20. But the defense held again, and a 38-yard field goal attempt was blocked — by A.J. Green.

Green also caught a 56-yard touchdown earlier in the game. On the ensuing Dogs’ possession after the blocked field, he made a third-down 22-yard catch at the Arizona State 22. That ultimately set up the winning field goal. Pretty sure he was player of the game.

It looked for a while liked Georgia might have an easy night. Didn’t happen. Maybe we should all just assume at this point that there won’t be any easy days or nights.

First the offense stalled, then it started dropping engine parts on the highway (a fumble set up one touchdown and an interception was returned for another score). Suddenly, ASU led 17-14. The Dogs came back to tie it. After forcing ASU to punt, the Dogs drove into Devils’ territory again. But Richt elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the 28 — passing up a potential go-ahead 45-yard field goal.  Result: fullback Fred Munzenmaier ran into a wall.

They seemed destined to lose. But at this point we should just assume they’re not destined for anything. Except maybe to keep us guessing.

Tums…I think we will need them for every game! I have no influence (i.e., alumni-yes, lots of $$ – no) but Ray Charles could see the biggest problem is Bobo’s play calling. It continues to put points on the board for the other team. Well, take two Tums and call me in the morning!

Jeff, all points indicate a youth filled squad in need of seasoning. Joe is a senior but his game experience is more like a sophmore at times. The defense is peppered with youngsters. We are watching the growing pains of a young team. I, for one, am encouraged by the weekly improvements, the heart of the team, and of knowing our best games are ahead of us.

Will they ever put together a good game? The defense has saved this team time and again. I’m beginning to think this Ga. team is just average. I just hope they’re saving the best game for the gators.I’ll give them credit. they never quit. It an’t over till the clock runs out with this team. GO DAWGS.

I cannot begin to describe my utter confusion as to why CMR did not kick the field goal instead of going for it on fourth and one. I am starting to think that maybe his playbook washed away in the rain. How we won that game is utterly beyond my grasp of comprehension. If this is the team we are going to have this year then I might as well keep the number of the local hospital here in Jacksonville Beach next to my TV because a few more games like this and the doctors are going to have to Baker Act me! I’m too old and nervous to watch UGA play this year. In the past I’ve kicked a tv or 2, threatened to fly to where ever Referee’s live and make them watch calls they botched, and even suggested that I’d drive the moving truck to an unnamed Defensive Coordinators house to help him move. I’m still shaking like a leaf in a hurricane after 2 or three Valiums, and while I haven’t had a drink of anything stronger than Ice Tea in more than 20 years, if there were any such substances in my home or close to my home, I’d drink grain alcohol just to get tonights game and this season out of my head. I’m glad to be 3-1, but I don’t think I’ll watch another game this year, my heart and sanity probably can’t stand it. Go Dawgs!

Good:-Pass rush was there a few times. Houston looks to just be warming up. Player of the game:AJ…no doubt….but if I could give a half vote…it would go to Rontavious Wooten….that dude made 2 HUGE grabs on what I believe was long down and ditance, in this game those added up big.Defense played very very well. Only gave up 10 points on the night…>VASTLY IMPROVED from the last 2 games. Line blocked very well. Anyone see Cox take a sack?????? I didn’t. AZ. State had a stout defense.

So-So-What was the deal with the Full back trap? Ran it like 5 times in the second half for a total of 3 yards????? I liked seeing the full back screen again…..had not seen that once this year til tonight. R. Jones still has coverage issues. Good to see B. Rambo step up and get that pick off the blits pressure……that is what it is designed to do. NO KICKOFFS OUT OF BOUNDS!!!!

No injuries tongiht and we are 3-1 and 2-0 in conference. Cut down on the Turnovers please and this week is a huge show down!!!!!!!!

AJ Green is a stud…Mike Bobo is not. Rennie Curran is a beast…Willie Martinez is not. Joe Cox is a fighter…Mark Richt is not. Too much talent to be playing like this. Play calling is horrible. If it’s not Willie’s bend and don’t break, it’s Bobo sending the defense right back out on the field. There is sound fundamental football and then there is this team. The officiating was horrible but was no excuse for what we saw out there in terms of play calling by Bozo…I mean Bobo. Mark Richt, I respect you as a man. I detest you as a coach.

Maybe the Dawgs will put it all together in their Big upcoming games against LSU and Florida. But the past four games have either been impressive offensively and terrible defensively or vice versa. Today the D looked decent and bad bad O. Although we did win by a touchdown (TERRIBLE OFFICIATING Tonight) that was a TD by Green clear as day and totally missed a 5 min long facemask on Caleb King. That crew needs to be fired. Cautiously Optimistic about next week. Go Dawgs and its great to be a non-hater who im sure will show up on here soon enough. Look on the bright side folks, Georgia has won all the close ones, doesn’t that count for something. I would rather see exciting games than the one sided blowouts that Florida & Texas come up with every week. If you can win the close ones with the whomever s, you should stand a chance of winning the close ones with the big boys. But we do need to cut down on the turnovers in order to be competitive every game.

You have to give props to Martinez and the defense. They got it done tonight. If UGA ever puts together a complete game, they might be pretty good. Penalties were down, but the turnovers continue to kill us. I’m afraid that with the athletes that LSU has, they will play tight man on our receivers the same way that ASU did. Who knows with our guys though, we may hang forty on them?

Nothing needs to be said about the QB…

Our coaching staff recap: How did you all like the handoff to the fullback 5 times in the 2nd half wasn’t that a great play? 2nd Goal from the 1 a toss sweep? One of the best kickers in the nation go for it on 4th down? 3rd and 6 game on the line must score, fly pattern? Get the ball at the end of the first half and can put the game away, what do our coaches do, nothing don’t even try? Maybe BoBo and Richt thought they were in Stillwater tonight only they forgot they were in moving water

I have watched Georgia play since the 70s. We have never been a dominating team, and I always know that 75-80% of the time we will struggle to put the opponent away when we are obviously better than they are. We figure out how to win when it counts, and remember, the wins are what counts. Sometimes overcoming adversity makes a team stronger. Last year it was penalties that seemed to kill us – this year it is more lost turnovers. We should have beaten Ok State had it not been for turnovers. So, I guess, you can’t get lucky and win them all when you keep giving away points. I’d rather win games ugly than lose games in any fashion. Let’s just be thankful for the win and get ready for LSU – a team that almost lost to another Bulldog team today….

Get off Ritch’s back…he is a steady coach/mentor to his players and has done more the UGA football than any coach in the last 30 years and if he stays around, he will do more than coach ever did at Georgia…once Tebow is gone, Myer will actually have to get back to coaching and it won’t be all that great.

Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, demote CWM, take back over the playcalling, and start Logan or Aaron at QB. I really don’t want to drive up from Tampa next weekend to get slammed by a mediocre LSU team. I would love to see my boy Aaron Murray shake it up like he did while here in the Tampa area.

Geez, Cox was so far behind in his throws to AJ tonight. AJ had to wait on too many floaters that would have been in stride TDs by a gunslinger like Murray. Does no one else agree with this.

The Dawgs are playing as expected. They had three underclassmen go to the NFL (two were drafted in the first 12 picks). We are young and playing people in key positions that should not be playing these roles until next year. They make a lot of mistakes and the young ones are trying to play outside of the game plan and do to much instead of just doing their jobs. CMR, CWM and CMB will coach them up and this team will improve as the year goes along. Will the win the SEC, probably not but they should not either when you look at the team Florida has on the field. BTW: How good would FL be this year if Tebow, Spikes and Duncan would have turned pro after last season?

For all you unrealistic DumbA**es that just want to blame the coaches for everything and talk negitively about these 18-22 year old young men. Please go find another team to root for and leave the dawgs alone.

Martinez actually coached one of his better games tonight (held ASU Offense to 10 points). Murray has some tendinitus in his throwing bicep, so count this option out. Besides, we all see what Stafford did with his gun-slinging (no touch, overthrowing the long ball). Cox is far from perfect, but he’s completed more long balls in three games than Stafford did in 3 years, but I agree he was behind the WR’s tonight.

A few years back we look horrible against Tennessee and then was playing pretty bad at Vanderbilt. We kicked a game winning kick to win 20-17 and then finished strong. I hope we have found our stride???? I did say hope…… again the turnovers are killing us. Putting the D in bad positions. Yet tonight they came through. Didn’t have much O tonight but after 4 weeks we are 3-1. Could be 0-4 and could be 4-0. Hard team to figure out. In some ways it appears LSU is having a similar year. Look how many good or great teams have lost or almost lost to non ranked teams this year and last. Parody is here. Great win… Not perfect, but they rarely are, unless you play UTEP. Yes it is nice to win by 30, but if you are playing a BCS conf. team………Take the win and be happy about it!!!!!! Samuel was a great LB in high school and many recruited him as a LB…. I think that is the best spot for him.

TD, everyone has an opinion. I agree that some take it too far, and I am one to say we don’t need a new HC. I do think these guys are unpreparred often, but do think they have heart. Martinez? That’s a different story. Facts are clear: 97th, 108 & 112 in D stats this year with 4-5 star talent across the board. Go figure. Think about this: If not for fireronzook.com, the Gators would have 2 less NC (in the last 3 years). Go figure that, too.

Here is a quote from above: “We are young and playing people in key positions that should not be playing these roles until next year”

Let’s see from watching the games this year these are the players who I have seen make the most mistakes and they are pretty consistent and making the same ones again and again, over and over and there is not way anyone that can say otherwise unless you just do not want to admit it:

Evans SR Penalties and blown coverage
Cox Sr The turnover captain of the team
Prince SR Blown coverage and Mr. Penalty if he is close enough to the WR Notice how other teams constantly throw in his direction
Owens SR No pass rush, practically never here his name during a game
Vance SR Mr. False Start and holding king
Jones JR Blown coverage time and again

I would challenge anyone to blame a FR or SO with the same amount of mistakes the guys below have made. Is it really the young guys causing the problems? HMMMMMM

Our D looked much better and Cox has had some moments of brilliance that I never thought we would see watching the OSU game. I do think that Richt needs to look at CWM and see if he really is the right man for the job, but we did see some major improvement there tonight. There are playmakers all over the field on both sides of the ball and quite frankly it appears to me we do not know what to do with it. I hope the FG like someone mentioned above proves to jump start the team and they play as 1 each week. Cox, Evans, Miller, Vance. These boys are mistake prone. Iknow alot will say Cox is winning ! Truth be told Cox is getting bailed out by the best sophmore receiver in the country. My bad about not remembering Aarons arm pains. Just really frustrated. I still think even Logan could move us more effectively than Cox. His arm is stronger and Joe just freakin’ scares me.
Ex-Late in the game Joe was throwing into double coverage and those throws could have been easily picked off. Logan can scramble and he is much quicker than Cox if he has to tuck it and run.

I took my son to a GA-GaTech game a few years back and was surrounded by very enthusiastic, but very drunk and stupid, Dawg fans. When I asked the guy next to me when he graduated from UGA, he said, literally, and I quote, “oh I didn’t go to no college”. Found out that all of his pals were in the same boat.

Point of my story – it seems that a lot of the asinine comments about various players and vicious calls for CMR’s head or Willy’s b**** are coming from wannabes. If you went to UGA and you are truly proud of your alma mater, I don’t know how you can act like such a disloyal dumba**.

My grades for UGA, offensive line, D-, they could get no movement against the D line, pass blocking was okay, blocks on runs and sweeps was non-existant. Run blocking has sucked all year. Fire the O line coach! D line,f, no pressure from D line all night, Arizona St ran all night. Fire D line coach! LB Grade, D, LB coach should be fired. DBs, held ASU’s amazing passing game in check. Hard tackles by Jones, DB coach needs pay raise! UGA had poor game plan and didn’t move the ball. OC grade, F. RBS fumbled and got no yardage. Fire RB Coach! Mark Richt is in charge of the program, HC grade D-. Fire Richt! Special teams. The punter kept ASU pinned deep and the place kicker won the game. Special teams grade, B. Conclusion, UGA needs coaching changes, so fire everyone but the special teams coach and the DC. So all the facts say that CWM should be named as head coach and Fabris should be DC. Fire Richt now! CWM for head coach!

I got breaking news. The Dawgs are not going to win the BCS this year. I doubt they will win the East. They probably won’t win the BCS next year. I will take the field versus the Dawgs for one hundred. Those who want perfection, it aint going to happen. Those who want a new coach, send a letter or e-mail to Damon Evans. Me, after living through the sixties, seventies, eighties, ninties, and now the oughts, I am happy to be a Dawg. Just as in the other decades. I will take a win any way I can get it. And I will take a loss with humility and the knowledge that the next game it starts zero to zero again. I fear no team, I am ready whenever my Dawgs take the field. Some of you want better and think firing everbody will help. I don’t understand you. There is one man that is responsible. His name is Mark Richt. You can dislike his choices all you want, but they are his choices. I choose Mark Richt for our coach and he gets to choose his coaches and players. Just like Grizz, I bleed red and black. Even when we lost, Grizzard spoke of pride in being a Bulldawg. So just like Grizz, Bulldawg born and Bulldawg bred. And when I die, I will be Bulldawg dead.

Just try to backoff the hateful rhetoric and remember that we can’t win every game we play, but every Dawg will have his day. Thank you Corey Smith.

About the only thing I can say is this for the short-yardage situations: You can’t play like it’s the Rookie difficulty on Madden NFL 2010. You really can’t do it when you’ve been stopped two or three times before and then do the same thing. This OL hasn’t blown many people off the ball running, so don’t expect them to now. At the very least get Green out wide as a threat, and maybe you should throw it at him.

Predictability just won’t cut it. When they’re blitzing a lot, use more screens and maybe an end around or reverse. When defenses are playing tough like ASU’s, you’ve got to keep them guessing more.

All I know is that I’m ’sick and tired’ of the ‘SickandTireds’ of this site. To hell with all you fair-weather jerks. You act as if these kids and their coaches are trying to do this to us personally – as if they owed you and me anything. The play for themselves, their team-mates, their coaches and their school and unless we show them that we’re behind them they could care less about what the fans say. All I know is that the kind of dis-loyalty and criticism shown by way too many folks here will only result in future prospects saying, ‘who the hell wants to go there and bust your butts for those peckerwoods…all they know how to do is bitch and complain.’

So we’re not world beaters…so we may get thumped a few more times this season…so what? This team has given us exciting ball games and although I too wish we could have dominated these guys, we didn’t, but other than that first one, we won.

Did you ever think that maybe Arizona State just might be pretty good…and based on what I’ve seen from the rest of the PAC whatever, they may be the best of the lot. My ancestors would have fought for the North with the most of the Irish. A great Irish regiment from Louisiana, part of the brigade that was the Louisiana Tigers. One heck of a regiment from Virginia that was on Marye’s Hill facing the Irish brigade. Slaughtered them behind fortificaitions.

anyway, apart from the ignorant a-holes and civil war gabble and what not, i am back home wet and sore, but happy. we are 3-1 even after not playing a complete game yet. the defense played much better, very proud of them, special teams were better, including AJ as our new addition to that bunch. Joe looked very confused at times, but Az State is from a major conference, its not like they dont know how to play football. they did very well at disguising their schemes and they confused Joe at times. wouldn’t have been that close without turnovers, and that can’t be the coaches fault. with the exception of short yardage play calling, i thought the coaching was decent tonight, including a slight drop in penalties.

It’s funny how so many of you think UGA should be a title contender every year when Dooley, in all his greatness, did it exactly ONCE in 20+ years of coaching. Most of you would have fired Dooley long before 1980…..like the 2 years he went 5-5, 6-6 once……most of you are pathetic. Go home, sit on the couch and load up the VCR tapes of Donnan losing to Southern Miss, or 3 straight losses to GT.

I’ll tell you what– better yet, let’s call the AD and have him quit scheduling the OkStates and AzStates of the world and start scheduling Georgia Southern and New Mexico St again– who needs these games against BCS opponents???

UGA is 3-1 and 2-0 in the SEC. I’ll take it if you won’t.

Bobo’s play calling is soooo predictable. On Ga’s second posession they threw the ball 4 times on first down and marched down the field and scored a TD. When will Bobo learn that 1st down is not a running down when your starting running back avg 2.5 yrds per carry

Bottom line is that Richt is a milktoast coach who is incapable of making the tough decisions like firing Willie. He should have done that three seasons ago. Couple that with the aptly named Bobo (means stupid in spanish) and you get the mediocre and inconsistent performances we’ve seen year after year. If Richt views success after almost a decade at UGA as winning a couple of SEC titles and winning nine or ten games a season, the guy needs to go coach at NC State, Vandy or Wake Forest. Someone needs to sit down with this head coach and explain to him that the expectaion at UGA is now and always has been to win multiple national championships.

Marseilles Mutt

September 27th, 2009
2:28 am

I agree, we may not be a top 10, or even top 20 team. However, what does UGA have in common with Oklahoma, USC- both east and west- California,Ohio State,Ole Miss,
Okie State,GT, and Washington? Yup, they have all lost at least one game, and every one of those teams was ranked ahead of the Dogs in the polls by the so-called experts. There, however, the commonality ends, for none of the aforementioned are playing so many young, or inexperienced players at key positions. Operative words might be ‘inexperienced at their position.’
Especially on defense.

Further, think about it; three of the first four teams that UGA has played had all summer plus several weeks to prepare for Georgia; only South Carolina played a BCS school prior to the UGA game. I believe they played NC State to open the season, but could be wrong. The rest had ’scrimmages’ and could point to UGA from the ‘git go’ as their first Big Game or ‘real test’.

Each game had a different defensive strategy it appears, and left the coaches open to different forms of criticism ; in game one we tried to stop the run and double up/concentrate on one particular WR. Game two, give up the short passes and don’t get beat deep. Game three, commit totally to stopping the run- including using run blitzes- and make an inexperienced (in the SEC) quarterback in his first big game beat us and yes, he almost did. However, I found it encouraging that Georgia’s defense seemed to play better in the even numbered quarters against Arkansas. Adjustments appeared to have been made.

Game four, tonight’s, the defense played a more complete game and did show a marked improvement. The fact that they did all the above while trying to hide their lack of experience at different positions, especially in the secondary, is rather gratifying. But as someone who has had open heart surgery, I would like a little less stress from the ‘O’ side of the ball. Personally, considering my alternatives, I am truly excited just to be here, and this has been one heck of a season so far! I really love this team!

Referring to tonight, the good news is that I missed the TV with the glass when I inadvertently threw it after the second interception, but the bad news is that the window it exited through was closed! It slipped- that’s my story, as Alex once said, and I am sticking to it. Duck tape works wonders. True story.

I am sorry, this has become a boring column. But cease and desist with the rhetoric! Last I heard a W was better than an L. I am a homer, pure and unadulterated, with three letters in football, and live and die (oops! Bad choice of words.) with my Dawgs! If that makes me an idiot, so be it.

And one last thing; I have never measured anyone’s intelligence by how much they agree with me…..unlike some of the bloggers that appear on here from time to time.

I think we proved tonight that those stats about our D are pretty accurate, Comes down to the fact that you have a QB who can make plays we do not. Go look at the game we moved the ball all day you did not. You scored on two busted plays and the first TD was due to a “hold” questionable vall I’d say since the ES ‘We love SEC no matter what” PNU never showed the hold. Our best games have to be ahead of us, because they sure as hell are not behind us.

This is the worst coached football team at UGA, ever.

You watch the other college teams, and their coaching staff actually makes adjustments.

We cannot coach special teams.

We cannot coach offense.

We cannot coach defense.

Does that about sum it up ?

I have no idea how a head coach can say that he is standing pat on his “coaching staff” and try to deny that with all the obvious talent handed to them by all of us, that his “coaching staff” is a laughing stock.

A. J. Green blocks a field goal with the game on the line after 17 games here. Excuse me, where has he been the rest of the 17 games ? We were not trying to block any of those other field goals ?

Both Caleb King and Richard Samuel and for good measure Carlton Thomas, have all fumbled the football.

I presume this awesome “coaching staff” read that with 2 NFL fullbacks, we should play them. Then, we do play them, and telegraph their plays – even after a time-out on 4th down.

What in the hell is Coach Richt doing with the clock winding down in the 4th quarter and us on the 28-yard line with the score, wait for it now please, tied ? He goes for it ? He, given Blair Walsh to kick field goals who only hasn’t missed a field goal all season. Hello ? That is good coaching, please ?

Dimitri Nance is the only player on the entire Arizona State offense. Let’s see, hmmm. Good coaching that he is not shadowed ?

Instead, with a horrid offense featuring a QB who looks like a goon, and one who never saw the inside of a weight room as now a senior, we cannot figure out that we have to expect every play to be Dimitri Nance.

Dimitri Nance has a CAREER DAY against UGA.

We are playing the team who is Number 1 in the nation in turnover ratio.

So, you figure our “coaching staff” has suggested that if we lose the turnover battle, we will lose the game, right ? These dimwit college roommates of Coach Richt, were it not for Bacarri Rambo would have had nothing positive and everything negative once again this game too.

Our punt returns are fielded one time by one guy and next time by someone else. Is this the I want to give everyone on the team a chance to screw it up for the whole team coaching philosophy ? I don’t understand how a punt can come down and get flubbed by 1 of those guys sent back there willy-nilly to take the next punt. Surely by now, after 4 games we know who is our best punt returner, one would think. That is if the “coaching staff” had a frigin’ clue, they would, right ?

Aron White is not the best Tight End, right ? We saw Orson Charles. I saw him. So, why did Orson Charles have zero yards tonight ?

These are not very good football teams we have played, yet. That is painfully obvious watching the same world-beaters against us, play other football teams. LSU just destroyed Arkansas by 50 points while we just got by them, and now while we just got by Arizona State who will go on to lose, with that QB, at least 5 games.

Arkansas will lose 6 games.

South Carolina will lose 5.

How many will we lose ?

I said 10-3 and another lackluster bowl opponent.

It could end up 10-3.

How happy will you be with that ?

With this “coaching staff” that is the best you can hope for.

Another huge night of turnovers, another huge night of special team gaffes, another huge night of penalties, another huge night of no running back, another huge night of no adjustments by our “coaching staff” and at least 50% of the posts on this blog once again, can summarize only that we must fire Willie Martinez. It’s not Willie Martinez’ fault that he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator for The Georgia Bulldogs’ football program. This is embarrassing. And, even more so, that all the fans can say is that firing Willie Martinez will fix everything. B.S.

7 more penalties. 92 yards rushing again. 3 more turnovers. 1 turnover gained and it by a player never played until tonight. Another Special Team nightmare all night long. Non-existent pass rush again against a totally hapless QB, even when we blitzed. Another lackluster effort by Richard Samuel. Another lackluster effort by Caleb King. Another unbelievable night for A.J. Green – is this coaching ? 2 TDs on the first 3 times we got our hands on the ball. Do you even know what we did with the next 10 times we got our hands on the ball, to sit there and summarize FIRE WILLIE MARTINEZ and all is well ? The next 10 times we got the ball with a 14-3 lead, we had 4 punts, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble, and one lost on downs. And then until we are losing and it’s the 4th quarter with the clock winding down, we manage 2 field goals to “win” the game against that team with at most 2 players on the entire team. This “coaching staff” sucks, Coach Richt. Get with it, or move along. I am sick and tired of this kind of effort with all we give you for talent to see you sit there and have the timidity to say that you are standing pat with your “coaching staff” when Albert Einstein says Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Are you insane Red Dog 77 ?

National Championship with this “coaching staff.” Get over yourself. We have had the Number 6 Recruiting Class for 9 Consecutive years now, and counting. We have 32 seniors and juniors on this team. Those are all considered Top 6 in the nation in talent. The problem with this football program, is NOT TALENT.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

B.S.

We have all the talent in the world to compete for a national championship, every year. The issue dimwitted Red Dog 77 is that we have a sorry lot of coaches teaching our men to play a football game. There is not a worse “coaching staff” in all of America and the reason for this is NOT because we have no talent here. It is because Coach Richt wants to surround himself with a bunch of his buddies. And, then defend them.

And, then YOU COME RUNNING IN HERE RED DOG 77 TELLING US ALL WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE DAMN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

If there is a sorrier QB in the country I don’t want to see him, this guy is absolutely awful. He couldn’t hit a bull in the butt with a two by four. He had guys open all night and he must have thought they were all ten feet tall and someone should have told him that it isn’t a completion if it is out bounds. You could just see the sign of indignation on Erickson’s face every time the cameera panned on him. The next level down maybe.

Where is this stud offensive line??? The defense is a disgrace to the SEC. Arkansas got 7 against Bama.

20-17 at home against a horrible Arizona State team?

If Evans means what he says, its time to say goodbye to this second rate coaching staff and bring on Gruden. Didn’t take long for Meyer to pass us by; I predict Kiffin will do the same in his first year.

If Evans waits, UGA will join Auburn as the another elite program at the bottom ofthe trash heap.

Arizona State had no business on the same field with our athletes. And, frankly we were lucky to win against _____________ . (Fill in the blank : South Carolina, Arkansas, and Arizona State.) All I know is that if UGA beats LSU 20-17 on a last second field goal, there will be dancing in the streets. The only people upset are those who allow the national media perceptions (and the AJC’s pro-Ga Tech sports writers) dictate how UGA should play. UGA won. A win is a win. Number 6 recruiting class every year for 9 consecutive solid years of talent including 32 Seniors and Juniors. That is what we fans have handed to this lousy coaching staff to watch them squander all the talent handed to them.

They redshirted Knowshon Moreno so we only got to see him for 2 years.

What is Marlon Brown doing ? This “coaching staff” put Marlon Brown in for a play against South Carolina. That’s it. He has not even been on the field any other play.

The more the players, like Marlon Brown has done very loudly already, complain about this “coaching staff” and the less the fans come running in here like Red Dog 77 saying we are going to win the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, the better off we will be because Coach Richt is NOT LONG for this PROGRAM sticking with his buddies and defending them with all the talent we obviously have.

90 UGA NCAA Rank Rushing Offense – Where in the hell is Washaun Ealey? Tony Ball, a Running Back by Trade, was MOVED to Receivers he never has played so that Bryan McClendon who never played Running Back but Wide Receiver only (Dad was RB and a great one.) could be made Running Backs coach. Would you say we have our best RB on the field ? Would you say 1 of them has been coached how to carry a football correctly ? Well ? Would you ? Number 90 Rushing Offense in the nation, UGA.

74 UGA NCAA Rank Total Offense – we haven’t played any good teams yet. Coach Richt who is Offensive Coordinator by Trade, gave this position up to Mike Bobo who had a fine senior year here as our QB but has proven to be inept # 74 Offensive Coordinator. Mike Bobo had the Number 56 Rushing Offense LAST YEAR WITH KNOWSHON MORENO.

95 UGA NCAA Rank Scoring Defense – we haven’t played any good teams yet.

87 UGA NCAA Rank Punt Returns – we put a different guy back every punt. Did you buy the 2009 Georgia Football Media Guide ? There is NOT a Special Teams’ Coach listed any longer. It had been Jon Fabris.

115 GA NCAA Rank Turnover Margin – Baccari Rambo ended a record 87 passes thrown against us without an interception; and, we don’t play Rambo.

90 UGA NCAA Rank Pass Defense – this is mostly because even against a junior high QB last night, we only sacked that goon 1 time all night long.

89 UGA NCAA Rank in getting Sacks – this is because we have 14 linebackers we recruited and ZERO Defensive Ends, including AFTER last year when we were Number 72 in sacks for all of last year. JON FABRIS is the Defensive Ends “coach.”

71 UGA NCAA Rank Tackles for Loss – Willie Martinez was demoted to Co-Defensive Coordinator before the season by Coach Richt, and is also our Secondary Coach, you know the guy responsible that for 87 passes in a row not 1 of which was intercepted until a guy he will not even allow to play Baccari Rambo intercepted one last night; then, he took him back out.

Someone wrote that they had a strong defense…no, sorry, UGA has problems on offense. Just wait until you play some strong SEC teams…..ASU is a bottom dweller in the Pac-10 for a few years now and has a worse team than last year….UGA is just much worse than last year.

Auburn and Florida are two potential losses…that I see now. Nothing wrong with this team going 10 – 3…provided we can win the bowl game. Final…National Ranking somewhere between 13 – 16.

I feel that the coaches just don’t have the killer instinct and are aggresive enough to compete with the UFs and ALs. I did not understand not trying to go for another touchdown before the half. If that had been Spurrier or Myer or some of the other coaches in the SEC, they would have been going deep to increase the lead before the half. But UGA decides to run the ball and run the clock out. Too much talent to be performing as they have been.

With all due respect to Tim Teblow and Colt McCoy, AJ Green is the real deal and should be the Heisman frontrunner right now. No one in the country is more valuable to his team. Nor has anyone else been such a significant difference maker. Our Bulldogs are possibly 0-4 without him. The refs last night completely blew the “no touchdown” call. Even the ESPN U commentators were amazed as they watched the replay over and over again that CLEARLY showed him tap his toes inside the ed zone as he came down with that ball.

And how many points have we given up on 12 turnovers? I think reality may well hit us in the face in October. I can definitely see us 3-5 by All Saints day. Exactly how many times must you send your backs into the fray behind a line that cannot block and stop expecting the result to change? There is no focus, right now. Top to bottom. Head Coach to managers. None. We continue to look chaotic like we did after Bama last season. LSU and UM are licking their chops by now. Lane Kiffin is, too. Oh yeah, it’s time someone told Don Leeburn what he can do with himself, and to encourage Mike Adams to get the NCAA job. Can you take your lapdog Damon Evans with you? Quote from Mark Richt

“I’d like to remove some of the drama if possible and just play a solid 60 minutes of football, but we just have not found a way to do that yet,” Richt said. “But that’s coaching, too. I’ve got to do a better job of getting these guys prepared. It’s not only what I might say before the game or at halftime. It’s what we demand of them throughout the week and maybe we need to do a better job of that.”

ALL….your coaches have to do a better job. A win is important but if it happens with poor exectuion, it leads to losses. We already have one we shouldn’t have had.

My fear is the coaches don’t know what they don’t know.

Bobo has done a decent job but sometimes his playcalling falls into high school. No motion, no misdirection, players disappear never to be heard of….and with all that talent. Thank good ness for AJ.

Martinez’s team played better but we are not very good. Still very little pass rush, too many missed tackles and AZ State had way to much push on our DL. Atkins and Houston played well. If you want to see the way a defense plays, just watch Alabama. When Arkansas’ receivers went to cacth the ball, they were getting STUCK every time. There is NO excuse for Bama to have so much better a defense than us after him being there only 3 years, but it comes down to levels of expectations.

It would help if everyone would take off their partisan sunglasses. The Bulldogs have some good players, a few very good players, and some above average players. Perhaps 1 or 2 great players as well. They are just a bunch of more talented than usual 20 year olds playing a game they seem to love, that they have been successful with in high school, and in exchange they are getting a free education (if they have the ability to profit from it). A few may go to the NFL, but the players are not generally the cream of the crop, nor are they professional.

Luckily for us most college teams are in the same boat.

Enjoy the games. Cheer for them and drink an extra beer when they fail.

Random thoughts…

First let’s get the Cox excuse of week out of the way…it was raining…

Second, The Ginger Assassin needs to lay off thinking about individual goals (beat Bobo’s record), or just keep them to himself and mouth zipped…last time I ck’d it was still a team sport…

Thank goodness AJ is 6′4″ and Cox can throw his natural floater pass and Green can make a circus catch almost every time…Cox is going to get him killed…

Ginger, still locks in on one receiver, did he even check off one time, or were most passes floaters to AJ and screens, quick tosses, and wide out screens…

Good to see the ball thrown to Wooten, but where was Brown…

Does Gray have it written in his contract that he must get in and handle the ball once a game from the QB position and once to do a fair catch…

ASU had some stud players on the D side of the ball…

What’s w/ the Homers always stating that “if you didn’t go to UGA” then you don’t have a right to criitize/critique the team…pretty fair skinned bunch of pansies…the way you gain exposure in the polls is thru your fan base, and the bigger, the better…keep it up and you homers will be 2nd tier in consideration year in and year out against the likes of TX, Fl, Ohio State, Southern Cal, LSU, Bama, Okla, and the list goes on…heck, last year was the first time I can remember UGA ever being a pre-season #1 pick…all you real “FANS” can update us on this…

How did Murray throw out his arm, must have been running the scout team as the OSU QB…what a waste…hope he applies for a medical redshirt…

Finally…AJ did not have a TD catch…no grass moved, no drag marks, nothing but air….the ref was 5 feet from the play and I’m sure he took that all into account to make his call/no call…if the announcers were on top of things, they should have pointed this out…

Things running through Tebow’s mind when he got hurt:

You guys should be happy at least you beat three BCS teams and only lost to a at that time top 10 ranked team. I do think that you should be starting one of your young highly recruited QB’s so that they will be getting some experience or you will be in the same situation next year; we all know that QB play is so important when it comes to winning against top teams. I think the coaches should be treating this year like staffords freshman year and getting a young QB some reps because you will only have AJ Green for one more year and you would like to have a QB with some time under center throwing to him so that you will have your best chance at winning the SEC next year. You need to remember that Tebow will be gone next year and the SEC EAST will be there for the taking, so why not sacrafice this year so that you could be great next year. A talent like AJ only comes around once in a blue moon, just look at how TECH wasted the talent of Calvin Johnson I don’t think you want to do the same.

I hope that UGA does well the rest of the season and that they have a good record when they play TECH so that the game will get some national attention for the state of GEORGIA.

GO TECH!!!!

This team stinks.

The only certainties with UGA are:

1) They don’t win big games (except for UF 2 yrs ago)
2) Players get arrested
3) Richt builds character

Richt is so arrogant. Our close wins against weak teams help hide the mediocrity of Joe Cox.

God, Cox is awful. He throws sideways passes which go so slow that the defense tackles immediately.

We all know A.J. was not out of bounds…touchdown. Are you all REALLY Dawg fans? If so, why are you always so negative? Some people predicted we could possibly be 0-4 at this time. We’re winning, young players are learning…making mistakes but learning…and winning! We could have a coach like Meyer that wants to get style points so badly (because they didn’t beat the stew out of Tenn.last week)that he wants to make it all up this week and beat Kentucky for the 28th straight time, Tebow still pounding the crap out of’em and gets hurt. I hate he’s hurt, but hope it cost the GREEDY “AH” (meyer) A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP this year. Go Dawgs!!

I am at the point now to expect a win the moment the Bulldogs fall behind. They are not attempting to impress the polls, because simply put, the polls are BS, and those who participate in said poll are only of equal quality.

With all of his effort and being a HUGE part of this offense….AJ Green is the MVP of the team.

Old Dawg, the “nothing but mouth” Techsters beat you last year, when you were heavily favored, up by 26 at the half, and they were playing with a ragtag group of leftovers from a previous coach you used to beat like a drum. You used to simply out-talent them. That is no longer the case. With lesser talent, their coach appears to do more than Georiga does with the blue-chippers.

Georgia is consistently one of the top-10 recruiting programs in the country. You should NEVER have a “young” team. Mark Richt is a fine recruiter and runs a clean program. He is able to convince the nation’s best talent (and almost as important, their families) to come play for him. His staff needs some serious re-examination. Past Georgia teams were known for their defense and their tenacity. Look at the points you have given up in recent years.

There is simply no excuse for Georgia not to be a perennial top-10 team. Florida is able to do it. Why not Georgia?

WTFs of last night’s game: Who can a defensive player push a ref into the offensive line disrupting the play and get a no call???? How can an announcer be so biased that he not only gushes over ASU and makes comments about UGA losing the game in third quarter, he calls UGA’s win unfortunate at the end of the game????? And, as much as I make it a point not to be negative about our team and coaches: How can Bobo call virtually the same play in every short yardage situation even after it had been given away by the ref pushing incident, and has the offense ever worked on what to do when the ball gets intercepted (they looked completely baffled)?

I have made it a point to be incredibly positive and back my team, and as frustrated as I got last night… as many times as I said to my wife we can’t do this crap against LSU, UT, UF, Auburn, Tech, et al (I didn’t really say et al to my wife)… The best thing about our team is they keep doing something right somewhere when they need to to get the W.

Our pass rush looked better last night. UGA made some mistakes, but they never folded. A.J. is stellar, and his damn toe hit the grass I swear it.

4th and 1……Bobo should understand that if I knew what was coming the other teams coaches and players knew what was coming. They had this play set up. Earlier at the a the goal line after plunge into the line by the fullback, they tried going wide with Samuels. No misdirection, no fake into the line. Of course it failed. Now back to the 4th and 1. A fake into the line with the fullback, which everyone knew was going to get the ball, then a pitch or just a QB run around the right end might have worked. It couldn’t have been any worse than the call they made.

I’m sick of making excuses for this team. Last year it was easy to do that. In the immortal words of Larry Munson “We’re decimated by injuries.” However, there are some trends that cannot be ignored. Penalties, we had 6 penalties for 45 yards in the first half and we’ve been one of the most penalized teams in the SEC over the last 2-3 yrs. That screams a lack of discipline, intensity and fundamentals. Turnovers, this bug showed up last year and hasn’t gone away. Again, shows a lack of discipline, intensity and bad fundamentals. Protecting the ball is not a new concept in this game. Lack of execution. Lately the Defense has been the brunt of this and well deserved if I may say so. However, don’t forget that the offense has always shown potential and from time to time lives up to it but cannot be called consistent. All of this points to one thing. Coaching. Yes we’ve been averaging 10 wins per season under Richt, yes we’ve won some SEC championships, yes we’re recruiting the top level talent in the South and all over the country. So why is it that our team never seems to live up to it’s ability?

Fair or not, it always comes down to coaching.

dg,

It IS a valid argument because Washington DID beat Southern California.

LSU beat Washington. Don’t give me this LSU is “suspect” and UGA is NOT.

When Coach Richt could have gone and gotten Chief from the vols, he let Les Miles sign John Chavis instead. Now, who do you prefer as DC ? John Chavis or Willie Martinez ?

Vanderbilt has a football team that is not horrible either, not when their Defense has not given up 24 points in any game this season.

Mississippi State obviously is not horrible either.

Pete Carroll was complaining before the NFL Draft that Mark Sanchez was HIS quarterback for this season, and Pete Sanchez is obviously a better quarterback than Matthew Stafford. Right ?

Pete Carroll put that quarterback in the game, and Washington promptly drove down the field and scored and score and scored and scored. Finally, Washington scored the winning points when once again Southern California did NOT STOP them.

Last time I looked, Mark Sanchez nor any OTHER Quarterback of Pete Carroll was out there on that defense stopping Washington from SCORING THE WINNING POINTS against their DEFENSE.

Pete Carroll played Matt Barkley against Ohio State Suckeyes, and he threw 1 interception and no touchdowns.

Southern California made 2 field goals against Washington. Washington was 21 of 35 passes for 237 yards against Southern California DEFENSE, who by the way did not intercept Washington quarterbacks. Washington made 3 field goals.

Washington also had a RUSHING TOUCHDOWN against Southern California’s DEFENSE.

After Arkansas got 1 TD all day long yesterday total against Alabama’s DEFENSE, don’t come in here please with this LAME LSU is suspect and UGA is NOT when we gave up 5 passing TD alone against Arkansas. In addition, we gave up 2 more field goals against Arkansas, but Alabama alowed only 1 TD all day.

South Carolina scored 37 points against UGA. North Carolina State held South Carolina to 7 points total. And, Ole Miss held South Carolina to only 16 points. But, UGA gave them 37 points.

Georgia is clearly MORE suspect than LSU is.

Arizona State is SUSPECT because they haven’t played any one.

Our wins over these teams are SUSPECT. LSU is LESS SUSPECT than UGA.

The SEC is a pathetic conference. You only have 2 decent teams, Florida and Alabama; and Florida has to play it’s starters the entire game to run the score up on hapless teams. Auburn and Tenn struggle to beat two high school teams, UGA lucks out to beat a horrible Arizona St team, Kentucky is Kentucky, LSU barely beat Missy St , Ark was crushed by Bama, Ole MIss looses to a horrible South Carolina team, and Vandy is Vandy. What an over-rated conference.

The whole program has run full circle since Richt arrived!!!! We are now back to where we were when Goff/Donnan were king!!!! Yeah the UGA program of the past decade where we had the talent and the fans but NOT THE COACHING!!!! Does ANYONE on this board think we are a SEC contender like we were in Richt’s first four years??? We are NOT and won’t be anytime soon. The blackout Bama game was our fallen angel game and I am afraid it will stick with all of us fans for some time. That was the night when the “Real” coaches took control of the SEC again. When will we beat Urban and his nasty Gators again??? Maybe by chance in another 6 years? Lets face it folks the train has left the station and our Coaching staff is right where UGA likes em long term which is the leader of the 2nd tier SEC teams!!!!!!!! God help you Coach Richt cause by sticking with Martinez and all of this mediocrity while having NC caliber teams your ship has sailed my man!!! You had 2 teams that were the NC teams we all longed for but you misplayed your hand (got outcoached when it counted) and you will be hanging onto your last 2005? SEC championship when it finally hits you that its tougher than you first thought to stay on top!!! Richt won’t be coaching another Div I program after UGA rids themselves of you after so many more mediocre seasons. Richt used to have the fire but has lost it and I blame that on sticking with the WORST DC not only in the SEC but maybe in the nation!!!!!!!!!!!! UGA back to the king of SEC 2nd tier where they have lived for WAY TO F****ING long!!!!!!!! Give me a coach with fire !!! Look at Saban’s D and what he has done!!! Its night and day compared to watching the high school inept Willie D. Look at Myer, if you get called for flags he grabs you yells and pulls you out of the game. Look at Spurrier almost beat us at home with 1-3 star players vs. our 4-5 star athletes. For fans that can’t see it, enjoy the “tight” games against crappy teams and then act surprised when UF, UT and other top programs smoke our ass year after year. This is horrid to watch from greatness in 2002-2005 to total mismanagement since with Willie at the helm of our proud traditional UGA D that has turned into a hunker down joke of a unit!!!!!! The fact the Richt stands by his man through this leads me to believe we are not gonna be top 10 material again until the bring in a new coach with fire and lead fists!!!! Oh yeah Adams and his crew will blow the new coach search in 2014 and get us some lackass again like Ray Goff!!!! SEC championship in the next twenty years???? I bet humans are on mars again before we revisit the dome. Our program has come full cirlce and it makes me want to ask the Gator nation for forgiveness from our Bulldog sins back in the days when we used to make em pay. One day someone at UGA will wake up and go get the Saban or MEyer of the day and we will rise again but I might be 75 then up from 35 today!!!! HAve fun fans enjoying our crummy team keep the cheap teams tight!

Maybe one of these days, SOMEBODY THAT COUNTS in the scheme of things that is UGA football will realize that the problem really ain’t Willie, nor is it Bobo’s inconsistency, but that the REAl PROBLEM lies in the fact that Richt is a MEDIOCRE, OVERPAID, OVERRATED football coach, and that if they want to be in the same league with Meyer and Saban, then they are going to have to HIRE someone with Meyer’s and Saban’s ABILITY.

UGA is doing fine, doing what it needs to do to get a W. As I have said many times, there are going to be a lot of nail biters, and nobody is beating the Gators. (Well… I have a feeling that somebody’s going to beat the Gators). UGA has played four solid teams, 3 of them actually pretty good. Next week, we will all find out if UGA can rise to the occasion against a big time team.

laurenzo,

The Defense was GREAT ?

Our Running Backs had 31 rushes for 92 yards and 1 fumble. Our Quarterbacks had 2 interceptions and 1 TD.

We have had a grand total of 42 yards on 8 punt returns, all season long now. We had 3 kickoff returns against Arizona State for a grand total of 41 yards, that is 13 yards per kickoff return against Arizona State.

Dimitri Nance had more yards rushing against our Defense by himself than we had against their defense, in total. The entire Arizona State team did not fumble the football once. Arizona State did better on kickoff returns and better on punt returns than we did as well.

Arizona State’s QB had 1 TD pass the same as did Joe Cox, but while Joe Cox had 2 interceptions, that twit of a QB for Arizona State only had 1 interception by our great and wonderous Defense.

What the hell is this our Defense was great laurenzo ? It was AJ Green, WR, who blocked their winning field goal, after Coach Richt inexplicably from his 28-yard line in the 4th Quarter with the score tied, DID NOT EVEN TRY the winning field goal.

I’ll take the VICTORY!

I think we played much better than we looked.

Coach Richt is definitly “living right”.

Turnovers should be a major concern at practice. We have dodged some bullets but pick 6’s cannot be defended. Cox hopefully just had an off game.

I think our running game is missing big Trinton more than we could have hoped.

We are major young at the skill positions but major talented. Wait until the light bulbs come on. AJ is the master at getting position on the defender.

You don’t lose 6 draft picks to the NFL and immediately become better.

Much better pass rush. Thank you Justin and Geno. I wish Curran could stay eligible forever.

Yes, it’s going to be one of those years to watch and see. I base that on the way the game is being played out there week to week. Yes, one week it’s definitely the defense, then the offense is penalized so much you question what went on in practice the week leading up to the game. Special teams have been consitant with just a couple of costly mistakes, good nonetheless. Instinctively as a fan you don’t want to be critical because of the won loss record in a rebuilding year. Well it’s not a rebuilding year for Joe and Bobo needs to unleash the talent on offense even if its to give experience for the pups and the defense a break. C’mon, use those tight ends and AJ’s going to get open more often.
Sorry but the plays are way too predictable. The fans are going to hate me for this but WTF! Bobo’s play calling is like Dooleys playing not to lose but HELLO, Irk’s not back there to cover your posterior!
Honestly, it’s tough love early in the season and I hope you Dawgs make more of an ass of me than I just made of myself. Go Dawgs.

The bad news: UGA, except for AJ Green, is playing a lousy brand of football. With the way they’re playing they’re due for a loss in the next few weeks.

The good news: Except for Alabama, everyone else in the SEC is pretty suspect. Florida is vunerable right now with Tebow being hurt, Tennessee won’t do anything until they can find a QB, South Carolina is mediocre at best. Vandy and Kentucky are playing like Vandy and Kentuky. Ole Miss got exposed. LSU and Arkansas won’t win anything until they find some defense. Mississippi State plays hard but isn’t where they need to be yet, and Auburn hasn’t been tested yet. So the SEC is there for the taking. If the Dawgs decided to play real football like they’re capable of, they could be a darkhorse contender for the SEC title.

Bottom Line: Dawgs have the talent and the conditioning to win games. What they lack is the attitude and the killer instinct that championship teams have, like they exhibited at the end of 2007.

Anyone who asks for the coach’s head after any game (a win or a loss), I don’t know if you really think things thru intelligently. You want to fire people for something that will occur every now & then, a loss. It’s not going to be the last time UGA scores 20 points & get the win, it won’t be the last time they give up 40 points, no matter who the OC or DC is. But I don’t know why I’m trying to use common sense on a senseless bunch, why you’re the same people screaming “We want our country back from Obama”, & “get those darn Mexicans out of our country” when technically they’ve been in this country probably longer than you. I digress, it’s just frustrating being a UGA alum & watching a mob mentality fan base huddle & talk senseless about firing a staff that has been exceptional & for a few games underwhelming. I just pray to Allah yal don’t break the hoods back out (thank Allah gas is not cheap anymore) & break those crosses back, Martinez better break back to Florida if that happens b/c those times won’t be nice.

Maybe I am being dellusional, but I thought it was a good game. We couldn’t run the ball, but ASU’s Defense was not that bad. Their front 7 brought pressure all night. ASU’s defense looks to be a little underated. Cox was pressured all night, and the run game was snuffed except for a couple of nice King runs. Is ASU’s front 7 that good, or is UGA’s OL overrated? I think a little bit of both.

I don’t understand why Bobo cannot call a consistent game. Time and time again our offense just disapears with terrible playcalling. Is Bobo too inexperienced to be a SEC OC? That game should have been over in the first half with better play calling.

We had like 2 QB sacks, I think, but consistently pressured ASU QB all night. Geno and Houston should share game ball for the defense. Some people will say, but we gave up some rushing yards. Our D played the pass. the focus being on the pass opened up some running lanes for the RD, who I think looked pretty good. I think people had to be surprised at the physicality that ASU played with. They looked alot more physical than last year.

What to say about AJ… If we were a dominate team, he would be a front runner for the heisman. Not only did he go like 8-157, but he set up Wooten on a long completetion. Running the Wheel route, when AJ went post to the middle of the field, he took the Safety with him as well as the DB. That left Wooten one on one down the sideline where he made a spetacular reception. AJ also had the blocked FG. As far as the non TD catch, I agree with the announcer in that if that was called a TD and reviewwed, it would have stood. I watched the replays and I was not 100% sure it was a clean catch. In my heart, I was 150% sure.

There were some bad calls in this game. As UGA fans they all seem to go anti UGA. I saw the face mask on King. You know only UGA gets 15 yd. penalties, not their opponets. As for the so called Pass Int by AJ on the long reception (someone mentioned earlier), That was a good play by a exceptional WR. Great teams like USC, UF and the like get away with those plays all the time. When you are an established player, you tend to get those. Actually, I didn’t think it was. I saw AJ slow down and the defender made contact (incidental) AJ used the bump as seperation to make the catch. An allpro play by an all pro WR. That had NFL written all over it.

All in all, it was a good game. Like many, I don’t know if the heart can handle much more craziness from this team. It was a nice change of pace from the 51-48 games we were beginning to get accustomed to. Now we have to refocus with LSU coming up. Hopefully we can get another win. Go DAWGS !!!

I just don’t overstand, most people expect GA to score 30+ consistently every game & give up 10< every game, not going to happen. This coaching staff only once lost 4 games & kept GA in the hunt. I don't think USC is asking for Carrol's head & he loses to an unranked team every year, again too many idiots out there to convince, I just hope the coaching staff can ignore the terribly misguided "we want our defense of old" buffoons & just continue to guide these young men to be better people & the main goal better citizens so maybe one day we can truly enjoy the game & not get so caught up in the outcome of every game like our lives depended on winning & losing, especially when we win much more than we lose.

we should give a lot of credit to Arizona State they came and played their heart out especially on the defensive side. Our D was decent but honestly we could have played much better, because ASU has only one weapon #31 and we couldnt stop him only late in the 4th Q. play calling was more predictable than none especially in the 2nd half. We are still infected by the Turn overs bug, an average of 3 turn overs every single game, , its a curse. LSU is next and if we going to have -3 turnovers we will lose, Im hoping the team will finally bring their A game

Dear FU: Try looking at the coach from Boise State. Although they don’t play in a “big” conference, the team appears to be very well coached. The talent appears to be pretty good. No coach is a guaranteed winner, but with Richt, its pretty evident UGA will be an also ran in the SEC East, not to mention the GA Dome. So far as other names, I am of the opinion that if you wave sufficient money in front of a prospect’s face, he will consider you. Try waving 2 million in front of Muschamp. He may not pan out either, Hoss, but you have to try. If you want to get beat by Meyer every year and Saban when you play him, no problem. So far as I am concerned with Richt, you know what you got. Try something else.

Good posts. What a shameful display of celebration after winning on the last play of the game – clearly they should have walked off the fields with their heads down. Also true regarding the depths to which we have fallen under CMR – if only we could get back to the Goff and Donnan heydays. Well, one can dream. It makes me proud when a UGA fan, an alumni no less, speaks with such knowledge. Keep up the well-thought out and totally rational posts.

Wait a minute… Who said we were going to go 13-0 and win the BCS? When over the summer did anyone say UGA was going to be awesome and beat everybody? The predictions were 7-5 and 8-4. Next week, we will all find out if UGA can rise to the occasion against a big time team.”

Well coached teams don’t consistently have more turnovers then they force. Of all stats, you can usually find the highest correlation between winning and losing in turnover differential.

Well coached teams place a premium on ball security. Well coached teams constantly preach and practice holding onto the ball. Well coached teams practice stripping the ball and forcing turnovers. In fact, it’s the one aspect of the game that, generally, doesn’t have anything to do with athleticism or recruiting rankings or talent, but rather hard work and discipline. All of which must be instilled by the coaches.

Emmanuel Moody fumbled in the 1st quarter of FL’s game against Troy. It was his only carry. He did not return to the game. Is that fair? Probably not, but I guarantee Mr. Moody understands that fumbling the football = not playing or getting more carries.

Just an observation:

Since Samuel would rather hit or run over someone, move him to linebacker. Also Boykin does a great job of running the ball, but struggles to cover or tackle. Maybe he needs to go to offense. Just seems like a Robert Edwards issue.

BTW…anyone know why at the end of the game UGA didn’t take a shot at the fg on 3rd down…w/ a sloppy field therecould have been a bad/mishandled snap, still would leave time to call timeout and take another shot…nope run to the middle of the field and kneel down…heck you had 2 other plays to run to the left and put it in the middle of the field (those two runs that gained 2 and 3 yds and still left the ball out of position)…coaching strategy, clueless…

I know what I get with Richt, and I like it. We don’t get beat by Meyer and Saban every year. We are 1-1 with Florida over the last two years, 2-3 over the last five.
CMR has taken us to 3 SEC east title and 2 SEC championships. I’ll take that. I don’t want Peterson or Muschamp, and it worries me that others do. I’m sure you love UGA as much as I do, and we will just have to disagree, but I think CMR is the man.

Jeff,

I’m not buying your argument. Turnovers, more than any other aspect of the game, have to do with player performance, not coaching. And while I’m sure there is a correlation between turnover margin and victories, it’s not the best predictor of wins and losses.

Here are the current top 5 teams in turnover margin this season:
1. Air Force
2. Arizona St.
3. Wyoming
4. Rutgers
5. Colorado St.

Wanna trade spots with any of those teams? Want any of their head coaches? I think I’ll stick with Richt and his 3-1 record.

I saw a Florida player block a punt and then recover it himself in the end zone for a touch down. A georgia player could never do this because he would have to-

1. block the punt

2. spint 10 yards away from everyone and do a slow motion, strut, dance to show everyone that’s the first time he has blocked a punt since pop warner ball

3. sprint and recover the ball in the end zone

Carl Spackler,

Our coaching strategy wasn’t clueless at the end…it was calculate and well-thought out. ASU called their last timeout after 2nd down. We ran on third so that we could run the clock down to 2 seconds and have a shot at winning the game on the last play of the game. If we had kicked the FG on 3rd, we would have had to kick-off to ASU and they would have had 25-30 seconds left in the game. That is perfect strategy – why would you want to give ASU the ball back?

Im curious to see if all the positive outlooks will still be posted after the next 2 games when we face teams that have better defenses because if we continue to turn the ball over, give up a ton of penalities and think we are going to pull it out, think again. Arkansas looked great against a good team in Alabama right, Ok State looked good against Houston remember, and South Carolina, well does anybody really think Houston Nutt can coach a team to a top 5 program on a consistent basis I don’t, and he hasn’t. The defense looked good against Arizona St, “really”, ok their QB was 10-32, he had several guys wide open on deep balls all night that he over threw go back and look at the game again if you taped it. The only offense was 92yds from their RB. Had they been able to complete a few more passes??????????

Call me negative fine, say I told you so, I sure hope so, but I have not been impressed with the defense, was not impressed last night and will not be impressed until we can stop LSU, FL, and now Tech to under 20 points. Not 35 or more.

One more note I LOVE HOW WE CAN GET OUT THERE AND DANCE AND CUT UP on the field while the score is tied. Thats why we don’t execute, why we are ranked last in SEC and 100 in all defensive catagories (LOOK IT UP), and why we are the most penalized teams, (NO DISCIPLINE). Like Kevin Butler was stating last night, that is not something to be proud of to a great Georgia progam.

SEC out of conference is a joke

September 27th, 2009
12:45 pm

To the Dog fan talking about the ACC losing out of conference- At least we play some real teams OOC. NOt like Charleston Southern, Florida Atlantic, OHIO, Bowling Green, etc, etc. The SEC out of conference schedule is the joke. The only game thats worth a darn is Alabama’s win over Va Tech. Look at the OOC schedules for the SEC thus far and compare it to the ACC’s OOC schedule. And then shut your mouth.

The ACC HAS to schedule big-time OOC opponents since their conference isn’t as highly touted as the SEC or BIG12. If they schedule big time OOC opponents & win, then they’ll get more respect. I’m not saying there aren’t good teams in the ACC – there definitely are. But top to bottom, the Big12 & SEC are the best.

Conference this, conference that

September 27th, 2009

Would you people please give it up on the my conference is great and yours sucks nonesense. Thus far there is no conference that has stepped up to claim superiority. Looks to me like certain teams in every conference can beat anybody on any given day. But those same teams can also lay a steaming pile on any given day, too. Looks to me like nothing is predictable based on conference. I do agree with the others, though, that the SEC has played a pretty weak OOC schedule thus far.

I wasn’t happy at all with the play calling, the defense was nothing special as a group they don’t attack and that’s Willie’s problem. Vandy is more interesting to watch. The talent is there and I love MR but he has to do something. At the present time in the SEC. Ga. has fallen behind the LSU, FLA, ALA, program and soon and very soon the TENN. and if the old ball coach can ever get one star running back and one receiver to go with a so-so QB we will fall behind them as well. Now tell me it ain’t so. It shouldn’t be that way but it is.

I didn’t read all the comments on here, too many to read. But I have to ask of the negative comments on here, where ya’ll at the game? I was, and I have to give praise to our fans for standing behind the team, especially after the late pic. Everyone got louder and backed our D which played there best game yet. So I just cant believe that any of the negative posters on here could be the same “fans” that were there backing our team!

I agree that the D has been bad, but THEY WON THIS GAME for us and everone is still b**ching. Let’s face it, our fans and D could have easily thrown is the towel after that late pic. Yeah we still had the turn overs but there D I think played a heck of a game and either confused Cox or he was just off his game, maybe due to the weather. I cant say how many times I’ve seen top teams go down to unranked teams in rainy games.

I dont want to keep winning like this, but I do have to say it is a lot more fun as a fan. I’ve been to blowout game against cupcakes, and although we probably should handle a pac-10 team easier it was much more fun to watch a competitive game than a blowout. How spoiled have we become? We haven’t won a NC in the Richt era and we act like we expect it year in and year out. It takes some luck to win it, who knows what will happen? That’s what makes it fun! If you expect to win it all like last year, you are likely set up for dissapointment. Just think how much more fun it would be if we were to surprise everyone and win the SEC or even the NC this year. Not saying that will happen but how much more fun it would be if it did happen compared to expecting it. Lets stand behind our team! they need our support, they same udying support from last night!

So to those negative fans I am asking, tone it down a little and enjoy the victories. I cant say that I will blog anymore as I am tired of reading all the negative remarks. I cant say I dont say the same kind of stuff, but it’s out of frustration and emotion. But I dont carry it to the extent I see on here. As I said, STAND BEHIND OUR BOYS! GO DAWGS!

Dear FU: If you want Richt, then you can have him. I have been going to UGA games since Wally Butts was the coach, so I have seen a few. Personally, I like to win big. What you say about Richt is true; however, its “what have you done for me lately”, and, lately, Richt ain’t done a lot. Not for 2.9 million. Now that Saban is back in town and Meyer has proven himself, I wouldn’t mind having a coach that could hang with them. If you and the other Richt lovers out there don’t, so be it. I am not now nor have I ever been satisfied with “good enough”. If you and others are, great, that’s up to you. That’s pretty much what you’re going to get with Richt. Let’s see what LSU brings to town.

Anyone else bothered with Curran and others that were dancing to Rihanna while they are on the field waiting for the play to start? Similar to Caleb getting tackled and jumping up with attitude and then fumbling the next play. Their is a lack of discipline from coaches. If I saw my players dancing on the field while they are in position while in danger to losing to a team that originally wasn’t even ranked in the top 40, I’d be embarrassed and kicking butt. Enough of the street crap – let’s not have Miami attitude. Also, the defense is lacking a headhunter mentality. Other than Curran and Gamble, they are wimps.

I’m really embarrassed by some of the stupid comments made on this site. It’s obvious that most of these people never played football before. Coach Richt is a class act and will go down as the greatest coach in UGA history. You’ve got to give ASU alot of credit for the way that they played UGA. They showed alot of heart too. If UGA can limit the turnovers i think this team has a chance to win SEC. Lots of talent on both sides of ball and with the tough games that we’ve been in will help us down the road.

Duh….don’t have to leave more than 11 seconds…if they would have fumbled the snap then they call time out and try it again…make the fg and squib kick, but fumble it w/ 2 seconds and you go into OT and take your chances…teams do this all the time, why take the chance…

It’s apparent that this team is contagious with suspense (albeit i, as a fan, do not have an adequate supply of Tums), and as long as W’s keep coming, what does it matter?

I hop CMR realizes that his staff is not his call anymore. If he wants to say loyal to low ball willie , then he can go with him. Boosters don’t care what you have done. the good years (2002&2007) we came up short . No national titles. Schools in the SEC don’t play. Tubberville was a couple of years removed from an undefeated season and look what happemed to him.

ACC has only 1 ranked team. Virginia Tech who got slaughtered by Alabama. Nice.

Miami of Florida is barely ranked, and now faces Oklahoma after they were utterly destroyed by Virginia Tech (who LOST to Alabama.)

Georgia Tech is NOT ranked in the AP Poll and NOT ranked in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

Auburn is ranked AHEAD of Georgia Tech even.

The SEC meantime has :

18 Ole Miss

17 Georgia

4 LSU

2 Alabama

1 Florida

Nice stinky little conference you have there ACC.

Dancing with the stars was having tryouts during the 4th qtr. I guess no one new they hold tryouts when a team is tied during a game.

Hopefully Ga Football will be having tryouts in practice this week. We know we have some great dancers now how bout some great players other than A.J. They will now be needed since we will about to play real football.

I watched the Mark Richt show today.

CMR was very unhappy.

CMR said that he got after his team at halftime in the locker room. And, then in the 2nd half they did NOT respond.

CMR was not happy that with a 14-3 lead, we could NOT RUN the ball.

CMR was not happy that it was Arizona State who ran the ball against us.

If you cannot establish the running game, you are NOT winning in The SEC.

Of course, bigger than UGA being in fact now today The NCAA Number 90 Rushing Offense all season long this year, are the FUMBLES.

Matthew Stafford, practicing in the NFL what we taught him here at UGA starting with him playing every game in 2006 :

Matthew Stafford had 5 interceptions and 1 fumble in the first 2 games, on target for the worst season ever by a QB.

Today, he did NOT fumble the football and did NOT throw an interception. Recall of course that while at UGA Matthew Stafford had 18 fumbles and 33 interceptions (51 total) and only 51 Touchdown passes. We did not win the games Matthew Stafford had fumbles and interceptions here, either. Today, Matthew Stafford won.

Is there a correlation between the fumbles and interceptions and winning or losing ?

If we continue to be as poorly coached as we are and have been here with CMR’s “Coaching Staff” then we will LOSE to LSU.

If I were on CMR’s “coaching staff” I would SELL OUT to Running the Ball every down against LSU and I would SELL OUT on Defense to put 8 in the blocks and STOP the Run. Of course, if our Running Backs FUMBLE, it will NOT MATTER.

Richard Samuel fumbles the football.

Caleb King fumbles the football.

Carlton Thomas did not play, but he fumbles the football too.

We cannot get anything going in the Running Game because while we are capable of controlling the box with our OL, we DON’T HAVE A TAILBACK.

We are also capable of controlling the box against the Run.

“super dog” – how quickly you forget the 2 conference championships, and 4 division championships since Richt has been here. It didn’t happen in the 20 years prior to his arrival. Personally, I like 10 win seasons, bcs bowls, and being in the mix for championships most years. Again, we neither want nor need fickle fans like yourself. My biggest disappointment this season has been the OL. I was really expecting this to be a strength of the bulldawg franchise. It was debated as possibly the best in the SEC.

My biggest surprise has been the turnovers. What once was “in our losses, we had 3 turnovers” has become “last night, we had another 3 turnovers”.

My biggest hope is that we are young at a lot of positions. We have shown heart winning the past 3 games despite turnovers and penalties. We will improve. We will hold onto the ball. We will show some Saturdays where we click in all 3 facets of the game.

Let’s keep cheering and supporting our team. Let’s keep Sanford Stadium rocking next Saturday.

In December of 08, I said that “we will see a change in the UGA football program, come Dec of 09″. We are fast approaching that date and also a 6-6 season. The alumni and key administators will not stand for that. We will see that the offense was vastly over rated AND that the D staff and players, simply are not of the upper echelon quality needed to compete at the highest levels of the SEC.

Music City and another bitter loss to tech are fast approaching. History reveals that with two staright losses to Tech, begets UGA a new coach. We are on that track.

It’s hard to believe anyone is ripping the defense today. They gave up only 10 points against a BCS school, and 7 of those points were on a very short field. abe, I was wondering that myself, in fact, asked the same question elsewhere. Searels is the O-line Coach and the Running Game Co-ordinator. Lack of production from that aspect as well as the majority of penalties and TO, have been square on his shoulders this year. All this “accountability” and demanding of better coaching performance, and YET, I don’t believe I have read one single mention of his name this entire year. Defense has been pretty good half the games so far. Running game by comparison is way behind that.

Go back and watch how many times their QB who was 10-32 over threw wide open recievers not to mention their running back who did a fine job of running up and down on us.

Now had the QB would have completed a few more passes Im afraid to say there would not have been a happy outcome.

The defense looked the same, wide open people all over the field. I think we just benefited from a wet ball. They became one dimensional with the run and we finally stopped it.

Again I wish I could say the defense has changed but after watching coach Willie for 5 yrs its a Corso “Not So Fast” momment

Super dog. I am sure of what I said, and what I meant by it, despite you trying to change the point. My point remains. And it had nothing to do with anyone saying our defense was “great”.

But you are just illistrated what I was saying. To you the game was about how 112 yards is “running all over us”, which it ain’t, and in reality our rushing attack was ever worse that that. And has been for 4 weeks. And our one loss is directly a result of that while at least our defense has done what it took to win.

I don’t know what to tell you about the defense being the same ‘ol. Holding somebody to 200 yard of offense, lousy per play average, lousy 3rd down conversion, 7 points, a sack, 9 TFL, 3 pass break up, 1 int, several rushed passes, doesn’t sound all that bad to me. I wish that were the same ‘ol thing. I’d take it every same ‘ol time.

Here is the plan stop putting up with mediocrity. 5 yrs is to much. Get some coordinators who know what they are doing.

Coordinators who teach not to look a when the recievers eyes get big throw your hands up
Coordinators who have the better since to know kicking the ball in the endzone leads to better than a %93 average of never making it past the 20
Coordinators who train their kids to hold there down field blocks better

Giving up 5 yards on the pass play, what happened to bump and run like the pros

And the running game here is a reminder. “Oh looking back on it we made a mistake redshirting Moreno” He didn’t know the play book. ok yea

Georgia is always ranked higher when it doesn’t matter (IE preseason, early in the season, after the bowl teams are selected, end of season, etc). But the pollsters love to overlook them when things matter!

Georgia was ranked higher than MountainDawg on New Years eve, last year in the polls when Tech waded through the trash to get to sanford Stadium. And we spotted your hairy azzes not one but TWO touch downs at the half and then preceded to shellack your azz in the 2nd half (26-0 in 3rd qtr alone). The polls couldn’t save your ugly azzes that day dawg nation. At the end of that day (the 2008 Georgia Bowl-or Georgia State Championship), we won 45-42, rushed for 408 yards, and two backs (for the first time in the history of Georgia football), rushed for over 100 yards in the same game. You can look it up! Just be glad you had matt Stafford to keep the final score close.

Georgia’s defense was shredded that day (like the hedges). And here is why we expect the same outcome this year:
1. Our players want to beat georgia far more than georgia’s players want to beat Tech.
2. tech is not afraid to get bloody and Georgia is afraid to lose
3. the dawg nation is getting pretty damn good at blaming, referees, the weather, their coaches, their tailgaters, Announcers, game day commentators, etc for their short comings (and Rivals and scout.com are quick to support them).
4. No wonder their great players ALWAYS forgo their senior season there!
5. Tech prepares for this game like it’s a bowl game. All practices are closed to the media and our players are too intelligent to fall for the “planted spy” motivational crap-LOL.
6. Our coaches are watching film and coaching 24/7 while Georgia coaches prefer to treat it like any other game and are out recruiting.
7. Georgia returned all but one starter on defense from last year’s team (lol)
8. Georgia plays Auburn and Kentucky the two weeks before us while we play Duke and that Off Week guy.
9. The Tech Nation wants to follow the “Wedges by the Hedges” with “Pound the Hound”.
10. Payback is Hell and though we won last year, you have quite a few more years to pay for.
11. because Yellow Fuzz said so.
