Tech’s plunge screams something about perceptions

Here's Miami's Jacory Harris, stiff-arming Georgia Tech out of the rankings.

Here's Miami's Jacory Harris, stiff-arming Georgia Tech out of the rankings.

Georgia Tech just learned a valuable lesson. One good season doesn’t change national perceptions after all.

The Yellow Jackets, expected to drop several spots in the AP rankings after Thursday’s nationally televised 33-17 loss at Miami, suffered a far worse fate than that: They dropped completely out of the rankings. Ranked 14th going into the game,  Tech dropped out of the top 25. Its point total placed the team 27th overall – representing a dramatic 13-place plunge.

As I wrote in a blog on Friday, a drop of four or five spots seemed likely. The fact the Jackets dropped so far so fast illustrates they haven’t built up much in the way of what I would call “assumption strength” with pollsters. As in: “I know they looked bad Thursday, but I still think they’re pretty good.”

Conversely, Miami jumped 11 spots — from 20th to ninth. Two previously unranked teams also entered the top 25: Florida State (18th) and Washington (24th).

AP voters could well have been judging the Jackets on their body of work. They were sloppy in a season-opening victory against Jacksonville State. They blew a 24-0 lead at home to Clemson, before rallying to win. The Miami game was an embarrassment, as they were outscored 33-7 after taking an early 3-0 lead (before scoring a late touchdown).

The option offense has been hit and miss, Jonathan Dwyer has struggled and the defense has struggled, particularly in pass coverage. The fact is, it’s been downhill since the emotional 45-42 win at Georgia, as Tech was hammered in the Chick-fil-A bowl by LSU, 38-3.

If Tech has designs on returning to the rankings, there will be no shortage of opportunities. After playing North Carolina next week, followed by a non-conference game against Mississippi State, the Jackets will face Florida State (road) and Virginia Tech (home) in consecutive games.

Coach Paul Johnson has struggled to get through to his players that, “We haven’t accomplished anything yet.”

Well, getting their attention shouldn’t be a problem now.

Ok,one question: Where is Saint Simons? I think that we all knew that this gimmick offense would come crashing down hard soon after watching LSU, Clemson, and now Miami play GT. The thing about gimmicks is once it is figured out, you can’t adjust. The only thing left for GT now is to get drilled. UNC will humiliate them. You nerds are done. It was fun while it lasted for all of 15 games. GT will be lucky to go 6-6 this yr. (33-17)hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

Like I said before….gimmick offenses are only good for a year. Tech simply does not have the coaching, recruiting base, or talent to consistently be a serious national or conference contender.

All of you so called football fans that think the option is a “gimmick” and that it’s been “figured out” are probably a few points on the IQ scale above mentally challenged. No offense can run if not executed properly and no offense can execute properly while getting beat up front. The offense is fine, and plenty fine enough to put up 50+ on a sorry UGA defense this season. The problem, if you know football, and actually watch the game instead of listening to the talking heads and rehashing before church on Sunday, or outside your trailer in the folding chair… is the Offensive line is pitiful and there were orange jerseys in the backfield all game against Miami.

Dawg fans should be concerned about how everyone has “figured out” their defense… If SC can score 37 on ya, and Hogs can score 41 (forget the 45 that Tech hung on ya), I’d say your high school defense is “figured out”.

Jeff,

Like you, I suspected this perception issue would come into play last week. Great minds think alike, as they say. I don’t think anything short of a dominating ACC championship and a blow out victory in consecutive BCS bowls would change things. I think the perception of the triple option will hinder Tech as well. Maybe getting better uniforms and selling out some games would help?

Come to think of it, a team like Tech with a terrible modern history, (in a very suspect conference like the ACC) has an up hill battle for possitive recognition. Add in embarassing games and poof, you’ve got a perceived cupcake. The way Tech is playing thy’re proving the win in Athens to be the fluke that it was.

If our gimmick is so easy to figure out, why couldn’t UGA figure it out with 10 games worth of tape in 2008?

Oh yeah, Martinez is actually dumber than the average UGA student… I hope you dogs aren’t disillusioned with the idea that Martinez will get smart all in a sudden.

A rough beginning caused by a lack of depth and a shortage of four and five star players has some short term minds happy and others jumping ship. The truth is that the option is not a gimmick offense but it does need quality to win.

As a UGA graduate, I have to come & take up for Tech a bit. I’m pretty sick of the lack of respect for Georgia teams in General by the often wrong media. USC after losing their QB & the heart of their defense should have been ranked 10th or worse but due to idiotic perceptions they are ranked in the top 5. Hey no one said Tech would go undefeated but if they do this same BS to Tech, they’ll do it to GA. Some people want things to stay the same as in their childhood, like Yankees ALWAYS having the best team, the LA Sparks inexplicably getting the #1 pick to get Mrs. Shelden William (again BS), USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Nebraska etc…. getting outrageous t.v. coverage when their are hundreds of other great stories in college football. Hell, SportsCenter covered USC-Washington 3 times before you heard about any of the other games. As much as I dislike Tech because of the constant 45-42 posts since last year, I have to say, they have been jobbed by pompous “EXPERTS” who gets more games wrong than Mark Bradley (and that’s difficult to accomplish). I don’t care for Tech but this Alum will stand when they’ve been wronged & they should be given at least a couple more losses before you put them out the top 25

A tech fan says, “I’ll take a 38-3 loss after a 45-42 comeback win vs. UGAy every single season for the rest of my life.”

Further proof that tech only exists to beat UGA, something that’s occurred just 13 times in the last 44 years.

Clemson figured Tech out in the 2nd half and Miami ran with it. Any good team with good athletes will stop this mediocre quality team this year. Look for more of the last 6 quarters all year.

Younger Tech fans are realizing the reality of upset wins. They’re upsets because you really aren’t that good any given week. If the team was actually good, it would just be a win and people wouldn’t be all “45-42!!!!!” 10 months later. Has Tech done anything of consequence since that game aside from come up with new ways to describe Paul Johnson’s spread-based triple throwing passy option with a side of cole slaw offense? The reason all of two coaches run it in football that matters is it’s an ancient offense that only confuses bad defensive coordinators (hello, Willie) and teams who haven’t seen it much. So now, you’re just down to the bad DCs. Tech only bested Clemson thanks to a few prayers being caught 50 yards down the field. Better teams like Miami won’t let that happen.

Can’t wait for the bees to call for Johnson’s head and then watch the program implode because of the lack of quarterbacks who can throw and receivers who can catch. Go look at post-Osborne Nebraska and cry for three years.

I have to say as a Tech fan, what CPJ did on national TV didn’t help the loss with his demeaning of our player. We need to get Dwyer going and get an O line that can actually give Nesbitt some time back there. Speaking of Nesbitt, if it wasn’t for his experience running the TO, I would put in Washington at least he can throw the ball. And last, please do some short slant routes to Allen. Stop with throwing the long balls, unless Nesbitt is actually going to hit a receiver.

Burdell reminds me of the year I spent in Birmingham. Early 70’s. Auburn blocked two punts to beat Bama 17-16. Saw many bumper stickers on AU cars through the next year saying “Punt, Bama , Punt”. Of course Bama destroyed them for the next 8 years until Bo showed up. This “rivalry” is no different.

Of course tech fans will “settle” for a win vs. UGA. Just like a UGA fan will “settle” for a double wide over a single wide every time. It’s a no-brainer, isn’t it?

PS: “No-brainer” means that even a UGA fan can figure it out because it requires no brain.

Been a tech fan for years, but its hard to stay enthusiastic. Too many letdowns. I don’t see them being competitive with UGA consistantly. Thats why tech fans go balistic when they beat UGA. But i’ve been walking this planet for 70 years and I know better than to get obnoxious like this goofy saint simons guy.
