Here's Demaryius Thomas scoring on a fake punt. This was something that went right for Georgia Tech Thursday night. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)
When they began ACC play a year ago, we discovered early that Georgia Tech would take a step forward under Paul Johnson. They won at Boston College, then nearly upset Virginia Tech a week later.
When they began ACC play Thursday night, we discovered early that Georgia Tech has the ability to be a major player this season in the conference, or just its greatest enigma.
The Jackets did nearly everything right. And then nearly everything wrong. They watched a 24-0 lead explode like the
And this would be something that went wrong -- Clemson's C.J. Spiller breaking free from the Tech defense. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)
Sherwin Williams factory that must have exploded on the Clemson team, because that’s the only explanation for the Tigers showing up for a nationally televised game wearing all purple uniforms and orange helmets. (Nobody told them it wasn’t a costume party.) In the end, Tech was forced to rally with two late field goals and defeated Clemson, 30-27, at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
On a stat sheet, it looks like a simple win.
In a college psychology class, it’s a term paper on psychosis.
They gets points for resolve. But beyond that, let’s forget about conclusions for a while. The season will help define what we witnessed Thursday. It counts for something that the Jackets thoroughly humiliated Clemson for most of two quarters. It counts for something that they didn’t quit after allowing 27 straight points to fall behind early in the fourth quarter. Everything in the middle — that mostly means Paul Johnson won’t be short of material for any blistering analysis this week.
“We’ll probably watch film Saturday,” defensive end Derrick Morgan said. “I’m sure he’ll have something to say when we get to the second half.”
This was to be Tech’s coming out party. They started the season ranked 15th, relatively thin air in these parts. They handled Jacksonville State with expected ease in game one. But they were sloppy enough and lacked sufficient focus for Johnson to reduce them to flotsam in his post-game analysis. This was the test. The conference opener, national TV, a home crowd large and loud. With Miami and a string of difficult opponents coming up, this game figured to be pivotal for how the season turned out.
Results? Inconclusive.
“Mixed emotions,” safety Morgan Burnett said. “I think we went through every emotion possible.”
The Jackets won. But they can’t afford to have too many more games like the one just played by their defense (240 yards and 20 points allowed in the second half) or quarterback Josh Nesbitt, who completed only 3-of-14 with two interceptions. Tech’s best quarteback was kicker Scott Blair, who threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on a fake-field goal play to make it 21-0 in the first quarter. Blair eventually won the game the more conventional way — with a 36-yard field goal with 57 seconds left. Nesbitt at least figured key in that, completing a 39-yard pass to Thomas on third down to get the Jackets in position.
But nobody figured it would come down a kick in the end, least of all the Jackets.
Clemson looked overmatched for a while against the triple-option offense. Anthony Allen, generally considered Tech’s third-best running back, ran 82 yards for a touchdown on the Jackets’ second play from scrimmage. For the next seven minutes, the Jackets looked the part of a top-10 team. The Tigers didn’t even look top 10 in South Carolina. The Tigers tried a fake field goal. But a quick kick backfired when the Clemson kicker booted it right to Jerrard Tarrant, who returned it 85 yards for a touchdown.
That was followed by a Clemson interception, which was followed by Tech’s fake field goal that resulted in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Blair to Thomas, which was soon followed by a 24-0 Tech lead that had Tigers coach Dabo Swinney looking like a wildebeest staring at an uncoming Winnebago. But as it turned out, Clemson wasn’t run over. Freshman quarterback Kyle Parker threw three touchdown passes, and the Tigers scored on their first four possessions of the second half. The Jackets’ offense sputtered. After a field goal made it 24-0, they had five punts and a Nesbitt interception in the next six interceptions.
Things turned out to be not so easy.
Morgan again: “We let up a little in the second half and lost some of our intensity. That can’t happen. They scored 27 unanswered points. That’s unacceptable.”
But they survived. That counts for something. Maybe one day it will all make sense.

Good assessment Jeff.. Nesbitt was miserable most of the game.. Threw into coverage and made what looked like some terrible reads on pitch. I’m all for an occasional pass attempt on first down, but you just can’t throw it up if the man is covered. What happened to the scrambles we say last year where Josh made something ou of nothing.
Secondary was less that stellar most of the game too.. Very lucky on the second interception. Edwards was beaten on play and ball was way underthrown. Thank god for Derrick Morgan and (I can’t believe I’m writing this) Scott Blair.

Tech is terrible…..the offense is a gimmick….why do highschools that have no qb run it? why was it successful at navy?? because navy plays NO ONE (yes notre dame is no one)………why is it that the only team that had seen a triple option offense in the past 40 years (Gardner-Webb of the FCS) was almost able to beat Tech? Because the offense is terrible and so is Tech….they escaped with a win that saw a freshamn qb, on the road, lead his team from a 24 point defecit…..im sorry Tech fans being ranked should be fun for a few more weeks……and clemson is awful as well…wont even make a bowl……hahaha….lets pay paul johnson the most money in the acc for one good year that will turn out to be a result of no one facing such and out of date offense…..what a disgrace….shut the school down or move it out of GA

I would say GT will be the underdog next Thursday. Don’t want to say it, but it is realistic….Nesbit throws high long and deep off his back foot – 2 INTs…..better learn to stop throwing into double coverage and stick with shorter routes…but 300 yds rushing in Miami will help a lot. Hmmmm Up by 24 points. How did that happen? Tremendous offensive domination? Nope. Clemson’s bad playing caused it. They let a running back run 82 yards. The quick kicked and didn’t tackle the man who caught the ball and started running with it. And, they allowed a fake field goal to become an easy TD, by not covering a player. Golly gee. If Clemson had come to play in the first quarter, they would have gone up 21-3 by the end of the third quarter.
Clemson practiced all summer stopping the Paul Johnson spread offense. They (other than the first quarter 82-yard run) did a tremendous job at that. Too bad Clemson didn’t practice all summer stopping Clemson from making mistakes. Tsssk tsssk

BTW, Clemson admitted that they worked all spring/summer preparing for us (not their opener). Still lost. Couldn’t they just look at LSU’s blueprint on stopping the option? Wasn’t this their 2nd shot at us? Guess your theories about our HS offense are blown away.

For all you dogs fans, guess what we have 2 of and you have none of…?
A WIN. When you get one, come back. Until then, shut it. For all you other fans, meet ya on the field any day, any time. For all this phantom call crap, funny how you are not talking about the one given to clemson 2 minutes earlier. Go back to the doghouse cry in your pillow, the Ol’ball coach is coming to town! Why dont you ask Mark Richt how hot his chair is when he is 0-2?
Now, for the game. First and foremost, my hats off to Clemson for showing a lot of heart and courage, with a freshman QB, new def coord. and head coach in his first full year after being down by 3 TD’s, to come back and make it a game. Outstanding game! My hats off to Tech’s D and the offense at the end for sucking it up, making multiple stands and driving the ball down the field when the game was on the line. If memory serves thats 11 out of 15 years in a row that the game wasnt decided until the end of the game and always by 5 points or less. Georgia Tech must find that killer instinct and put teams away. Clemson is an outstanding team and i hope we see them again in the acc championship game, my hats off to you, but Tech missed opportunities to put clemson in a deeper hole. There was one play where half the offense ran one play while the other half ran another. Special teams….outstanding. Scott Blair…a hero. 3 for 3 and a touchdown pass. PS…for you dog fans, he accounted for more points than your entire team last week plus an extra 6, and he is the kicker. I encourage you all to google tom osborne and his comments about georgia tech and the triple option and what it may mean in the future, the second coming of the option. Its not gimmick plays, it gives the offense the opportunity to score at any time. Teams quit running it not because it didnt work, but because recruits thought that the NFL was looking for pro style players. Tell you what, when Dwyer is drafted in the top ten next year, that misconception will change. Look how popular the wildcat became last year. There were 22 NFL scouts at the game looking at Derrick Morgan and Jonathan Dwyer. Gimmick my tail How many scouts are you going to have at your game this weekend? Thats what i thought. Pretty pathetic when your teams’ fortunes are looking so bleak this year that you are already on our blog talking pure rubbish and nonsense that are baseless, unfounded and just pure hateful and a complete show of unsportsmanlike conduct. Everyone on the field tonight can hold thier head high, Clemson and Tech, because they played a good, hard fought game with plenty of heart, lots of lessons, and it ended with both teams congratulating each other. Georgia fans could use a few lessons from the Clemson players and thier conduct tonight, as well as Tech. I hope Tech and CPJ uses this next week to find themselves, intensity, focus, and the killer instinct required to win week in and out. They will need it next week in Miami. Miami has had an entire year of stewing the the stomping they recieved by tech and will be looking for redemption. Enough rambling by me…i’m out. RAMBLE ON TECH! 2-0!!!!

i’m so depressed that i’m 0-1, have no confidence in my quarterback or most of my coaches. i guess i’ll entertain myself by giving Tech fans grief about the fact that they are 2-0 but they were lucky, benefit from penalties (did i mention the refs stole that game in stillwater), and have a coach that gets them ready for every game (did i mention i have no confidence in my coaches). Err….hey we were preseason #1 last year, take that!

I also can’t see tech being 10-11 after this. They won’t move up after that

Fierce Dawg: handled our offense well? 400 yards is “well”? I guess the 500 UGAy gave up wasn’t too bad either?

first of all, pathetic jocksniffing dogg fans, your team is also pathetic this year. probably you ought to post some tips for cmr on your own blog sites, huh??
Clemson was not as bad as they looked in the first half, and GT not as good. CJ Spiller was the obvious difference offensively in the second half. And Tech had some serious blown coverage on passing. Back to the practice field to work that out. Overall give them credit for rising back up in the final few minutes to post the win. That is good coaching.
And give dabbo credit for motivating his guys in the locker room.

Id still take Nesbit as a passer of Joe Cox
Please enter your comments here about that sentence.

GTJoe, more than 150 of that on an 82 yard run on 2nd play of the game, a 40 yard pass from your field goal kicker, and another 40 yard pass late in the game. i watched 6 series net 40 yards, 5 punts, and an interception, however.

Nesbitt is horrible as a passer. Just as bad as he was last year. Perhaps the Jacktes should bring in Tevin Washinton on 3rd and long. I was at the game and had good seats. Josh was way off and usually short on his passes or threw it just out of bounds. 3 out of 14? That ain’t going to cut it in any league.

Sorry Fierce Doggy Dog, I didn’t realize that that kind of yardage (i.e., big play yardage) doesn’t count. Luckily, the points do count.
Which plays would you like to subtract from the 500 yards we ran up on UGAy last year with our gimmick offense?

He is a passer who’s in an offense who limits it. As a senior at Greene County High, he passed for 2,256 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four interceptions, completing 134-of-222 passes.

White GA Dog: (sorry let me respell it for you to understand, “dawg”) you have plenty of issues to deal with in Athens to even begin to say anything about tech’s. Id still take Nesbit as a passer of Joe Cox
What is your QB’s name?
You correct me on spelling. Must be a Tech grad.

I thought the call to throw that long pass to Thomas on our last drive was pretty ballsy. The way Nesbitt had been throwing all night I don’t think I could’ve made that call; I would’ve tried a shorter pass or maybe just another option play. I groaned when I saw Josh let it fly, but that was a nice pass in a tight spot, and an excellent play by Thomas.
Clemson played great defense, especially on the D-line. Stop the dive and you’ve got a good chance at stopping the option. Our lack of a credible passing threat will really hurt us in games like this…but I think if we stop trying to throw bombs on all our passing downs we could do a lot better.
This team should play better at Miami, but I think they’ll have to fight at least as hard as tonight for a win; no way the ‘Canes will be overlooking us after what we did to them last year.

When he passes it has to be 20 or more yards downfield with little offensive line protection! Give him a break. He was tough late in the 4th

I hope we stick to passing out of our base formations rather than setting up in obvious pass formations. The former worked fairly well late in the game, the latter was just plain ugly. We certainly lacked intensity for huge chunks of the game, but it says a lot that the players stood up and made the plays when they really needed to.
This idea that Clemson shut down our offense is absurd. Yes there were more 3 and outs than anyone wanted, but we still put up a ton of yards and came up with just a few more than Clemson in the end. Yes we got 33 yards on the fake field goal, but Clemson got close to 100 on a couple of plays with broken coverages in the secondary. We will see how this team does as the season progresses and, while we always have room for improvement, I’m not really too concerned that teams will have our offense figured out.

GTJoe, your big three:
Nesbitt: 3 of 14 for 60 yards, interception
Dwyer: 19 for 66, 3.7 average
Jones: 5 for 20, 4 average
okay, i will give you your field goal kicker, 1 for 1 for 40 yards and a touchdown. hey, stick him in there more often. but yeah, that strikes fear in me.
dont worry dude, we’ve seen it once. Clemson already did much better against it a second time around. This time we’ll be ready, because you know the rules, nerd……..you get 1 out of every 8. 7 more wins in a row starts this year.

It started great for Tech, then very ugly for Tech. They have some work to do, but for now they are 2-0, and that is all that counts.
