Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez apparently has convinced Mark Richt he can do the job. Now he just has to convince everybody else. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)
ATHENS — The most maligned football coach in Athens cracked a joke. Or maybe it wasn’t a joke.
“I want to coach on offense,” Willie Martinez said. “Tight ends. A guy drops a pass, so what? That’s my dream job — to coach the tight ends in a passing offense. ‘Hey you: Get in! Get out! Did you block your guy?’ Ah, but my guys tell me I would just get bored.”
He should experience such boredom on defense. Martinez has coached at Georgia for eight seasons. It’s only in the past four, during his term as defensive coordinator, that he has been more like a dart board with ears. It’s the perfect storm for an assistant football coach: Work at an SEC school with a demanding and obsessed fan base; follow somebody popular (Brian VanGorder); and have, frankly, only moderate success.
Even if everybody got a little dizzy and Georgia was overrated before last season, it doesn’t fully explain what we saw from the defense. There was a lack of discipline and focus, poor tackling, far too many hot-headed moments and late hits that led to personal fouls. Martinez knows this. He also understands why he has taken some heat, and he’s not deflecting any of it.
“You know in this business, [criticism] is a part of it,” he said. “But you can’t let that affect you. You deal with it and you move on.”
Asked if he has ever believed his job was in jeopardy, Martinez smiled. “I’ve been doing this for 24 years. I coach the secondary. I feel that way every game. Whether I’ve been at Central Michigan and Boca [Raton] High, when you coach the secondary, if one guy messes up, you think, ‘It’s over. I’m done.’ “
For what it’s worth, he feels better about things this season. There have been fewer injuries (so far). Certain players have exuded more leadership. Practices have been tougher. Only one suspended player on defense. “Some years here, we’ve have had seven, eight, nine guys out,” he said.
All of which means if things don’t go well, there won’t be a lot of excuses. We’ll begin to find out in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 5. The ball will be in the air all day. Zac Robinson-to-Dez Bryant is an endless loop in Martinez’s head.
If nothing else, the game-planning will enable him to forget about four games in particular last season: Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia Tech. Three of those were losses, but even the win (52-38) in Baton Rouge was a defensive embarrassment (five touchdowns, 497 yards). In those four games, Georgia allowed 173 points and 22 offensive touchdowns. Martinez’s quick recap:
♦ Alabama (41-30 loss): “They did a good job jumping on us [31-0]. We couldn’t make a play. We settled down, and there was a moment where we had changed momentum, but we just couldn’t finish it.”
♦ LSU: “Poor tackling. Not to make excuses, but we had some bad weather that week and couldn’t practice the way we wanted. We just gave up too many big plays.”
♦ Florida (49-10): “I thought we had a great game plan. We just couldn’t overcome the turnovers [by the offense]. Defense is about changing momentum, and we couldn’t do that.”
♦ Tech (45-42): “We didn’t tackle well. We were there. Everybody knows what they’re going to do in that offense. If we tackle well, we win that game.”
He’ll take the blame for the poor tackling. It’s execution. It’s his job to teach, to motivate. “Everybody wants to do well,” he said. “But all you can do is concentrate on the process because all of the other things you can’t control.” And boredom isn’t part of the equation.

CMR has beamed in a co-defensive coordinator. If UGA plays better then folks might say that is why but who knows…. So far there are fewer injuries and a better attitude and more on field leadership.
I had Spock check the computer and his analysis is the following;
1. The rotation of OWENS,ATKINS,WESTON AND TYSON will be formitable-lots of inside pressure and tough to run
2. The return of Rodrick Battle in good health and moving Marcus Washington to DE in addition to having Dobbs, Houston and Cornelius Washington will result in much more pressure fro the DE position
3. The offensive line, under the very capable leadership of coach Searels has the potential to be the best in UGA history. Skill, experience and depth are massive.
4. A.J.Green is one of the premier receivers in the country. He will be double teamed and create imbalances in other parts of the field.
5. Linebackers are experienced and skilled… no weaknesses.
6. 2 excellent fullbacks in Chapas and Munzenmaier. They will put many linebackers and DBs on their azz. can also run the ball.
7. Saftey.. some skilled players but played below their ability last year. Missed tackles and got stupid penalities in 2008.Provided no leadership. Need new attitude, toughness and need to play smarter.
8. No running back has emerged. Carlton Thomas will prevail. Samuels has potential but runs straight up, has few moves and fumbles. King???
9. QB, coaches are being coy. Cox should be fine but if he blows up the snaps will be split between Logan and Aaron. Aaron is the real deal.
10. Corner backs..Prince Miller got beat a lot last year and OK ST will try to isolate DEZ on him. New new young guys to step up. Could be a problem area. Need major pressure on QBs to compensate.
If a few new players exceed expectations then 10 wins or more are logical.

The problem with the whole team last year was a sense of entitlement and a lack of discipline. This shortcoming is Richt’s. Georgia was second in the country in penalties. Richt’s approach to penalties was to yell at the referees. Part of the problem goes back to the Florida end-zone dance, and that was Richt’s idea. When the coach teaches bad sportsmanship, of course the players will follow his example, and the refs with watch you more closely. Chest thumping and jive talk are silly after yielding big gains on defense. Richt seems to have learned something from last years self destruct. We will see.

Osessed fanbase huh? So how would you describe the fanbse of every other team in America? How should we act? Should we show up on Saturdays saying, “I hope we win. The probability is such and such as their team does A,B, and C but maybe we can compete. In the end, it doesn’t matter?” Is that what we should do? Your darlings the Techies sure aren’t obsessed. Had the best team they’ve had in years last year and still couldn’t fill that thimble that they play in. I guess they were at home being realistic. You’re a hack.

We will see how improved the Dawgs are on defense this year. The fact remains is that Willie is not what I would call “a difference maker” as a DC. He is not of the calibur that UGA & Richt needs in order to progress to the next level (which is National Championship). He is mediocre at best, and we will never see the type of braintrust come from him. If you look at the rest of the SEC, I would rate at least 9 defensive coaches ahead of him. If any of you disagree, please help me increase my knowledge.

MIke, R. Jones was in the tops of the league in tackles, ints, and passes defended last year. Are we ready to run him off the field because we can’t name his big hits? Let’s see if he can worry about monster hits when he isn’t having to defend against QBs with all day to pass.

I’m in the fire Willie camp … even the interview was filled with excuses. Why didn’t he just say, “I did a very poor job of coaching the defense last year”? Willie don’t have it and Willie can’t cut it.
He’s at his worst in trying to make defensive adjustments. He’s so poor at it … he just don’t do it. My biggest dread for this season is Willie on the sidelines. It was embarassment city last year and it
could be even worse this year. You can have the horses but with a poor jockey you probably won’t win … have trouble placing and will miss the show. I’ll say it again …. Willie needed to go…. Disaster is waiting to happen.

I agree. Coach Martinez is right. UGA didnt tackle good. He didnt miss those tackles, but GATA and MAKE THEM TACKLE. Injuries and suspensions hurt, but this year, neither of those are a problem so far. Weather will cause a bad practice week, but a year long problem is another thing. Van Gorder did get to coach against Zook, and Lou Holtz, and the punkin didnt have Cutcliffe at TN.
What am i gettin at? All these are excuses that are NOT valid anymore. They all play a part and together, I can understand some teams being able to score points. OK State is a great team, and should score their fair share of points. The dawgs may give up 17-21 points to them, but that SHOULD BE ALL. I trust Coach Richt, and if this year goes bad, he will make a change.

“Every game we lost last year was because of the defense.”
Chris I would bet that the offense probably wanted to score more points than the defense gave up in each of those losses…what happened to our studs in those games? Kentucky was one of those games where the offense scored just enough.
I don’t think it is fair to blame everything on the defense. The whole team could have performed better than they did in every game–That was the problem. Hopefully the dawgs will play closer to their potential all year this year. And we won’t need to discuss whether or not Willie is doing a good job next year at this time.
Just the same…I score him a D to D+. We have always had good recruits on that side of the ball but we don’t always see great things from them. That is either poor coaching or we are just recruiting the wrong kids.

Last years’ defense was the worst I have seen in 40 years. Some people have disagreed with me, but 5 games of giving up over 35 points is terrible. Giving up 45 (or maybe 38) to GT was the low point of UGA defense in 40 years. What ever happened to a defense that when the offense turned the ball over, the defense would go out and make a stop. I can’t remember the last time a WM defense did that.
p.s. The only thing worse than WM’s coaching, is JS’s writing.

I still think the problem has more to do with the personnel than the scheme. We haven’t had many elite level players on defense over the last 4 years..and it seems as most of the ones we did have… left early or were injured and missed a lot of action. This year shapes up to be the best bunch of athletes WM ever had at his disposal as DC.CB is only the position on defense where the talent level is not significantly better this season.I like the fact that we have senor leaders in Owens,Atkins,Battle,Washington,Miller,Weston,Evans and I’d throw Jones in there because if he has a good year he’s gone.Actually I can see most if not all of them on NFL rosters next year so look for a big rebound for the D this year. Now I hope the recruitment of big time defensive players continue….the staff stepped it up in 09 and this 10 class …which they had to because next year we are going to be very young on D..Willie has his best group to work with now.. excuses will not be tolerated…but I think we will be stellar.

Cant do anything about the injury bug that hit Ga. last year. The line will protect Cox this year. He will have fewer interceptions than Stafford and more time to throw. R. Samuel is the fastest player on the team so said Moreno last year. Take Ga. and the points over Ok. St.

Hey Forest Gump…Go Away please. What do you know about football and sportsmanship? I’m sure you can read CMR’s mind to.Have you never watched, Meyer, Saban,Miles and Johnson scream at the refs during a game. They make what CMR does look tame.Do you really think CMR coaches poor sportsmanship?….Give me a break…….It amazes me to read what all these so called experts think about the Dawgs and their coaches. If these people are so great and have all the answers why don’t they go coach football. Especially the Tech fans ….the way they talk you’d think they won the NC last year…..they didn’t even win their conference and won’t for a long time running that gimmic offense of theirs.Tech will lose 4-5 games this years…and will definitely lose to the Dawgs…..book it! Tech is not that good….they are way over rated. Their defense is down right terrible and they have many holes to fill….Let’s face it they gave up 407 yards passing to the Dawgs last year and all they want to talk about is how many yards they got on the ground aganist Georgia….they need to look in the mirror. Dawg fans and coaches know they didn’t give their best in that game and believe me it won’t happen again….but Tech fans think their team played great….am I missing something?… they only won by three points thanks to a gift pick six and a fumbled kickoff by a freshman. Bet the house on this years game…Dawgs win big in Techs backyard!

If you want to see a good uga defensive game, go back to the 1981 Sugar Bowl game against Notre Dame. ND has more total yardage, more first downs and time of possession. Herschel Walker aside, defense won that game. Uga made no mistakes (fumbles or interceptions) and had one off sides penalty, which was offset by ND’s unsportmans like conduct on the same play. ND’s offense was better than uga’s but ga’s defense was better than ND’s. Uga’s kicking game was great. That year Uga lead the nation with 35 take aways. Coach Martinez should have to watch that game every night before going to bed.

Alt- No one appreciates your short, concise, and reflective comments (except for a couple of us).
Jeff- why wouldn’t the 18 injuries account for many mistakes by new players, some unfamiliar with positions they had to cover for experienceed players? Why wouldn’t you expect players to be out of position? What happens when our #! team meets the #2? The experienced players, more familiar with the playbook than the team younger players have a field day! These same inexperienced , but still good athletic players become the experienced players that we rely on later. Now we have a year where they both have experience simultaneously. Let’s wait to see the results before stigmatizing Martinez any further. Why don’t some of you writers (and fans) go back for all his work before you prey on a coach that suffered insurmountable losses(for many coaches) and still helped win 10 games last year. Many teams(ex. FSU) that have had the ration of bad luck that the Dawgs and coaches suffered last year had terrible seasons yet their coaches weren’t maligned (as some have persisted with Martinez). Can’t you imagine the first mistakes made by the D this year transformed into a plank for Martinez to walk after the first game? I’ll make a deal with you fair-weather pundits: If a pattern emerges after 4-5 games then I’ll join you at the end of the season in calling for him to step down. If no pattern then you should have the good grace to retract your vinegar words and cheer in chorus with the rest of us for the rest of the year. If you persist then we know you were never a Dawg and you have been trying to undercut the team all along. That goes for you too, Jeff.
I’m old, have glaucoma to the point of legal blindness and miss a few plays with a younger wife. That doesn’t mean that I can’t see from the stands, replay games on Tivo or see plays well on a large screen(better than young squirts that I watch with) so I must confess. The Tech squad O line sent some players flying head-over-heels with great blocking. It doesn’t matter what their O scheme of play is; they blocked precisely and hard for their runners, were disciplined throughout that game. If we don’t match that at least we will get the same result this year. It was the players, not Martinez, that didn’t buckle down with a serious Tech team. Same goes for the FU game. With the experience that we have two deep, I expect different results this year. We can hardly wait to see.

Ole Dawg – Not at all. Playing backups would explain a lot of mistakes. But my point is that it’s not like all the mistakes were committed by backups. For much of last season it did not look like a well-coached defense, whether they were “vets” or newbies. Everybody missed tackles and it seemed like everybody had personal fouls.

Bradley and Schultz sure are wracking up the blog hits today! It’s simple really, just take some jabs at Bulldog Nation and sit back and watch the on-line ad revenues soar. More clicks equals more ad space seen equals more money for the Cox family of Ohio. Bradley and Schultz are no fools. They know what it takes to justify their salaries as digital media unfortunately swallows the better yet dying form. See, they don’t do this for Tech for two main reasons: First, taking shots at Tech is old hat, their fans are used to being laughing stocks. Lastly, it’s better to ride the wave of false hope for CPJ, more Techies are coming out of the basement now.
It really doesn’t matter what angle they choose on Tech because there will be maybe two dozen posts any way, with most of them being multiple posts from kiddos like m and st. simmons. Not much ad money to be made there.

UGA’s defense last year had “too many hot-headed moments and late hits that led to personal fouls.” That is a bit of a generality. Hey everyone, lets see what happens this season and put a little faith in Coach Richt to do what is best for the program if our defense collapses, I really believe we will be much improved, but again injuries will play a big part in that as they do for all teams. and please MR. GUMP isn’t about time to give it a rest about the end zone celebration, Coach Richt has addressed this over and over and if you knew the man like some of us do, you would believe him when he says that the whole team going out on the field was never intended by him or the coaching staff, having played the game, I can tell you that as players you do alot of things to fire up the other guys, and yes believe it or not the coaches may not always be aware, as it turned out, the coaches probably should have been a little more clear on what the intention was, but to continue to assume Coach Richt lied about what he told the team to do after they scored is just not accurate, I along with others, that matter, do know and the responsibility of the incident has been accepted, so please move on..thanks

Good post OleDawg.
The D had it’s horrible moments last season. But many of them were cemented by the offense and special teams.
UGA gave up 14 points off of turnovers in the 1st half to Alabama (remember the 30 point first half… well, half of those points were on the shoulders of the offense). We lost by 11.
UGA gave up 21 points off of turnovers to Florida all in the second half (remember the 35 point second half… off of turnovers, UF started at the UGA 1, UGA 11, and UGA 25 yard line).
UGA gave up 2 TD’s to Georgia Tech off of turnovers (pick 6, and kickoff fumble at the UGA 23 yard line).
We cannot put all of the blame on Coach Willie Martinez. If the offense can’t control some clock and keep the opposing field position long, then a lot of defenses are going to give up extra points in a half.
And in the LSU game… there were a lot of mistakes. But we need to remember how we won the game. UGA caused 3 turnovers. 2 of them were INT’s returned for TD’s (we won by 14 by the way). We also had 2 sacks and 4 tackles for loss in the game.
I don’t make excuses for CWM. But I won’t stand by and say that the defense is why we lost to GT or Alabama. Or the sole reason we looked so bad against UF.
If you want to blame Coach Richt. That’s fine. But remember that he’s the best coach our team has ever seen.
And on a side note, many of the penalties and missed tackles were by players that were not in their natural position ( or would have been deemed 2nd or 3rd stringers). So injuries do have an impact (not all, but some) on the poor play out in the field.
Ask any coach, the team with more talent usually wins. All of our defensive problems last season can not be put on CWM.

Gravytrain — Not quite on target, but I always love reading about secret theories and agendas.
JohnnyDangerDawg — without going through game-by-game playbooks, unfortunately no, I can’t tell you how many personal foul penalties they had, what they were for or certainly not compare them nationally. But I can tell you they led the SEC in both penalties and penalty yardage (by a lot) and pretty sure they were top-10 nationally in both departments (that’s out of 119 schools).
Oledawgs — Yes, Rome is a tool. … On the newbies/personal fourls– yes, it’s also a possible contributing factor. But this is really conjecture. We can probably rationalize anything without thinking too long.
