If you’re Michael Vick — a one-time superstar now drowning in questions about your character, your leadership, your direction and even your football skills — this is what you wanted.
Not Buffalo. When rumors spread Thursday that the Bills were about to sign, my first thought was, “Doom.” Players trying to make comebacks of this magnitude shouldn’t do it with an organization so desperate from missing the playoffs nine straight seasons that they feel compelled to bring in a circus act (Terrell Owens).
Not Washington nor St. Louis nor Minnesota — other rumored destinations that lack either stable ownership or lucid management or any semblance of a plan. The Redskins are owned by an exploding cartoon figure in Dan Snyder. The Rams are lost. The Vikings just did some lame dance with Brett Favre and came away looking like fools.
If you’re Michael Vick, you wanted Philadelphia. There is nothing foolish about the Philadelphia Eagles (not since they parted with Owens). They are one of the top three franchises in the NFL. It’s very simple, if an NFL owner doesn’t want to follow the blueprint of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the New England Patriots, he wants to follow the Eagles.
Solid ownership. Solid player evaluation. Brilliant with the salary cap. Great coaching. They play, act and speak basic blue-collar football. Also, there’s Donovan McNabb.
They win regular-season games. They win playoff games (they beat the Vick-led Falcons twice.)

Vick's last game as a Falcon wasn't pretty -- ironically a 2006 playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Michael Vick isn’t just being thrown a Styrofoam lifesaver. Somebody just steered a cruise ship up to him and said, “Climb aboard. How would you like a nice steak and some slippers?”
Note to Vick: More than ever before, it’s up to you now. You are being given the chance of a second lifetime.
It has been two years and eight months since Vick played a game. Ironically, that came in Philadelphia in the final game of the 2006 regular season. He didn’t play well that day and was pulled because of injury, although some wondered if he really cared. He was relatively average for most of the season, not like the spectacular being who seemed to land here from another world, pumped life into the Falcons franchise and, yes, united this city’s fans. The Vick that finished that 2006 season lacked leadership and maturity. He failed to accept any of the blame after that game for the way the season had unraveled, which is what leaders should do, even if the soon-to-fire coach, Jim Mora, was partly responsible.
Two years and eight months of denials. Two years and eight months of dodging authorities, meeting with attorneys, walking into and out of courtrooms, sitting in jail, thinking, brooding, wondering what happened to the $130 million contract, what happened to the Nike deal, what happened to the fame, the status, the adoration, the Michael Vick Experience.
Folks — none of that makes you better.
The question: How much of that makes you grow up?
I’ve had doubts that Vick would ever be a success in the NFL again. But I’ve got a few less now. Why? Because it’s the Eagles. Because this is a franchise that has reached the postseason in 13 of the past 21 seasons in a league set up to avoid that kind of thing. Because this is a franchise that stopped Vick at a time when nobody could stop Vick: 1) In the 2002 playoffs, after Vick had led the Falcons to a wild-card upset in Green Bay; 2) Two years later in the NFC title game after the Falcons had drilled St. Louis in their divisional playoff 47-17.
Now it’s the Eagles who are there to rescue him. Where other teams see Vick as a toxic asset, the Eagles see opportunity. Now, Vick can learn from a premier coach in Andy Reid. He can practice and study with Donovan McNabb, as solid a quarterback and leader as the NFL ever has seen.
If you’re Michael Vick, this is more than you could have possibly hoped for.
The rest is up to him.

As a Vick fan, I am disappointed. Yeah, the Eagles are a class organization, but barring injury Vick has ensured he will not be playing quarterback in the NFL any time soon. The longer he goes without taking snaps, the less likely it becomes that he becomes the “face of the NFL” he wants to be, or anywhere close to it for that matter. Vick as a WR, RB, or kick returner is nothing extraordinary. It was his cannon arm along with his athletic ability that always made him a special player.

Not a bad team to go to. He doesn’t have to worry about competing for the starting job, he can work on his mechanics and get some stability at the Head Coaching position and other key positions throughout the organization. I wish the Eagles luck on every game EXCEPT when they play the Falcons.

Interesting opportunity for Vick. This would have been one of the last team’s I would have expected him to sign with. Eagles love to pass first, but this will be the best receiving corps that Vick has played with as a pro. Of course, he won’t play unless McNabb goes down or the Reid creates a package for him. Go Falcons on 12/6! That’s gonna be a fun game if he’s playing. The Dome will be bananas. I’ll bet that game gets moved to primetime on the NFL flex scheduling if Vick is seeing PT by then.

What bothers me is that none of us are perfect. What he did was despicable but what if everyone who is posting on this board had the curtain pulled away from them? What would we find behind that curtain? Would we find child molesters, domestic abusers, what?
Vick’s misdeeds are revealed for all of us to see but remember, thou who cast the first stone. We all have skeletons in our closet but usually those bones fall out of our closet in private – not public.
There is more hatred for Vick than Bernie Madoff who ruined generations of lives. Furthermore, the hatred toward Vick is mostly related to his potential to earn a living in a very high tax bracket. If he worked in a warehouse earning $12.50 per hour, no one would say anything.

When Vick played here in Atlanta, it was an instantaneous improvement position wide. Even though we were a team practically built with a lot of “no-name” players. The defense improved their play, the offense had a flare and an excitement about it, and the city had a buzz. Philly already has a great defense, an offensive line that dominates, BRIAN WESTBROOK, A CRAZY FAN BASE that will intimidate any team that plays on their field, and an up and coming speedy receiving corps. that will be among the elite. NOW ADD MIKE VICK. ELECTRICITY! PHILLY WILL BE A CONTENDER and a team that no one would want to play. GOOD LUCK #7. This is for all the people that have their priorities all messed up when it comes to life in general. I’m not saying that what he did was right it was so wrong, but with all the emphasis, energy, and hate that you show through your messages. You should place the same or more emphasis, energy, and hate to people that kill (like abortion) or harm human life whether it be through stupid decisions (DUI), murder of the innocent unborn, or rubbing someone out because you just don’t want to divorce them. This world would be a much better place to live in.

The Wind Beneath My Wings
by Michael Vick (for Donovan McNabb)
It sure will be cold there in your shadow
To never have sunlight on my face
But I’ll be content to let you shine (I’ll have no choice)
And if you get hurt I’ll take your place
So you’ll be the one with all the glory
And you’ll be the one with all the fame
I’ll be on the side to hold the clipboard for you
And wishing that I was in the game
Did you ever know that you’re my hero
And everything I would like to be
But I can get high now as an Eagle
For you’ll be the wind beneath my wings
I might have appeared to be slow-witted
But lately I’ve learned a thing or two
I learned it when I lost in the playoffs to you (twice)
I’m not very good compared to you
Did you ever know that you’re my hero
You’re everything I wish I could be
But I can get high now as an Eagle
For you’ll be the wind beneath my wings
Should Color Matter?

Atlanta, home of the fairweather fan, will have a whole bunch of Philly Jerseys around town. Those are the people who made the MV saga a race issue. The rest of us, Black, White, Red, Yellow or any other color/race with any lick of common sense will be supporting the Atlanta Falcons – a team of many races and almost completely full of players that respect the law. Those are the True Fans who have enough in their hearts and minds to let the past be the past and stop playing the race card. Any person of color who says things like “Whitey will be upset now with Vick beats the Falcons” would be all upset if someone said “N-Words can go to Philly with conVICKt” Stop making it a race issue. Atlanta is full of enough boneheaded people of all races and its about time the we all just watch football and cheer on our ATLANTA FALCONS – Remember, Vick was not the only black man on the team – he was just the only PLAYER on the team stupid enough to break the law. We have many other players of color that have not made race an issue. Why should you? That was the past. Move on. Grow up. Support your team or STFU!

Hello Guys, I know you could not wait until 0600 to start talking about this one. But this is my take that I do not think people are thinking about. A lot of people think Mcnabb is mad. I think he played a role in this move. It all spells out WILDCAT (Mcnabb), WILDCAT(Westbook), WILDCAT(Vick). In the past, Mcnabb have tried to run, tried to pass and tried the combination of both. He has not tried the Wildcat. Think about this, you would not guess who will run the ball, plus if you put Westbook on the flank he will be open on cross pattern all the time. LASTLY, THE HEADLINES SHOULD READ, “FROM ONE BIRD (Falcons)to ANOTHER(EAGLES)! By the way, I have Falcons Season tickets!!! Mark your calendars for December 6th.
LASTLY, PHILLY IS A PLACE OF BROTHERLY LOVE!!!! ALSO ANDY REID SONS GOT INTO TROUBLE. HE WOULD WANT SOMEONE TO GIVE HIS KIDS A SECOND CHANCE, SO WHY NOT GIVE VICK ONE, HE MAY HAVE THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The real facts always led to this. The press has spun this to make us all believe Vick was finished, but you start adding the real time he was serving filtering in the drug rehab they never did the research to tell us or just didn’t know what they were talking about, that knocked off a year in his sentence, seeing how even the half way house thing set up perfect for him starting this season and acting like it was all a coincidence is bull. He will now go on to be a super hero in a blue collar town, a rags to riches, this is almost so fake it reminds me of wrestling. I think the press has sold out to this PR promotion sponsored by the NFL, or is too lazy not to be a suckered partner to this forest. I kept listened to the misinformation wondering why make dog fighting sound like a life sentence when we have seen guys return to the NFL serving federal prison time for drugs and Lewis practically killing someone on a night out on the town. I am happy for Vick, I just cannot understand how more if any of the press could not have researched this and have predicted this outcome over the ones I heard from the local polyester coated news casters , the national stiffs and this paper.

While your assessment of the Eagles as an organization is spot on, there’s one BIG aspect of this marriage that is NOT a good fit. Philly’s offensive scheme – the West Coast, timing-based passing game – is an AWFUL fit for Vick. He’s never been an accurate passer (career 53%) and struggled mightily under Mora as a QUARTERBACK. sure, his athleticism at the position is unparalleled, and he has a cannon for an arm. But he’s never shown any evidence of being the type of QB that can be successful under that scheme.
I suppose Philly could just have a different scheme when the backup QB comes in. But that’s hardly what a smart organization spends its time doing – installing an offense radically different than its HC has always run just so the backup QB can succeed.
p.s. – however, as bad a fit schematically as this is for Vick, he’s still better than Kolb. so YES, he will quickly become the backup.

Dear AJC Editors – The reason your garbage newspaper is going down the drain is on display tonight. You give more coverage to a dog-killing, character-lacking thug (one who only says and does the right things when he’s painted in a corner) than you do the pro football team in the town you purport to cover. Four stories on Vick, five stories on Vick, front page main story, blogs, retrospectives, historical timelines… I guess the only way you get your local fish-wrap to pay attention is by lying, cheating, deceiving, murdering, abusing, torturing and whatever else this thug did when no one was looking.
And as for the FORMER Falcons quarterback-turned-felon… Does Michael Vick deserve to earn a living? Yes, he does. According to law, anyway, he paid for his crimes. But the privilege of pro football? He gave that up the second, third, fourth time he lied, and every time he engaged in a brutal, inhumane and ONGOING lifestyle (not a mistake, people – grow up, already).
Here’s a newsflash, AJC….breaking news, in fact. People with character, with ethics, with backbone just so happen to be holding a training camp in a little town called Flowery Branch right now. Maybe if you pulled a few of your J-school hacks back from Newport News, the remnants of your dwindling subscriber base might get a chance to hear about true leadership, true teamwork, true character.
Good luck Michael Vick. You’ve been portrayed as a victim for weeks, months, years. And back from the depths of your misfortune (which I’m sure you still maintain was the result of your childhood, your role models, your culture – keep deflecting, Mike), you’re back in the limelight where folks will look the other way just as long as you’re juking defenders and running for touchdowns. But there’s one person not even the slobbering media, your legions of narrow-minded worshipers or your high-priced gravy-trainers can’t protect you from. Yourself. History (which I’ve found to be a very reliable source of information) tells me it won’t be long before we see you getting front-page treatment in this sorry excuse for a publication again very soon. A man’s true character has this nasty little habit of hanging around for a long, long time.

Ah yes revenge will be sweet. Not only will we get redemption for Jennings (kinda) muffing the game away last year, but we’ll get to beat down Vick’s new team in the process. Sometimes, life gives you these gifts. It’s a great day to be a Falcon’s fan…

To Does Color Matter?
We have many other players of color that have not made race an issue. Why should you? That was the past. Move on. Grow up. Support your team or STFU!
Tell the same thing to your fellow Vick haters!!

If the falcons had any integrity they would refuse to play against the eagles because they have a felon on the team. this would show other teams how to handle this travesty, , no nfl for me and my family this year a shame..

Bob, not a Vick fan but even felons get a second chance. I didn’t like Vick as the Falcons QB, especially after Reeves was gone so it doesn’t matter to me he got another gig. I don’t care that he is a QB just not my QB. If every felon didn’t get a second chance then you might as well make every sentence a life sentence.

Best Available seats for the Home Opener is still Sec 139… Best Available seats for the Philly game Sec 349 (on the way to a sell out).
You think there is still a market for Michael Vick?… I’d say so.

Ahh, Vick gets to live the American Dream once again. Alas, the city of Brotherly Love may turn this bedtime story into a nightmare. A question : Will PETA ever back away from Vick..? A statement : Philly has now become Oakland East…

All you Mick Vick true believers who thought he was railroaded by the Falcons, the NFL & the Justice Dept – please move the Philly. It’s a
nice cozy city, great weather, great food & you can see Mick Vick every day. Please move & get out of this town.

The same folks who thought NO TEAM would take Vick are the same ones who are now saying he will not be playing this year for the Eagles and will be a clipboard holder. I mean how many times do you guys have to be wrong before you finally shut your trap and wait to see what happens next?
As I have stated over and over again this whole Vick episode since the federal government snatched this case from the DA in VA has been magnificently handled by the NaFLia. And on December 6th when the Eagles come to Atlanta, Vick will be touching the ball for some plays. WRITE IT DOWN CLOWNS — he will play on December 6th.

kids think ts ok to fight dogs because mv did it and he plays fb. He should have to drive a cab or sweep streets for a living.
we should email goodell our displeasure, and shultz you are a provacateur of this type of filth. I bet you fight dogs or rabbit or something behind closed doors.

The people that have the negative thoughts about Mike Vick are the same people that hunt and shoot wild animals. Then you brag about your catch and cut his head off and hang it on the wall. You should be a shame of yourselves. Don’t judge!!!!

I read with interest use of the word “thug” quite often in the posts. This even though people know that this is a code word for the “N” word. I have always found that when people use code words they only show their true colors.

Peion Deion: You are such a hater– Donovan McNabb has been a consistent, good QB for yrs now. Then to add to MIke Vick to the mix will make defensive coordinators thnk twice and prepare even more.
To ALL of the VICK Haters out there:
You call yourself adults–ACT LIKE ONE. You all act as if you have never made a mistake in your entire life and have never forgiven anyone. Move on or according to LAMAC66, STFU! Vick has MORE THAN paid his debt to society and has shown remorse- What else do you want? Please…..
These PETA folks kill me with their protests and soundbites– They act as if dogs supposed to be worshipped, adored and made love to– CALM THE F%$k down. I own 6 dogs and they are my pets– Not my love interests…
It is indeed up to him whether he suceeds from here forward.
I wish Mike Vick all the best and I hope for his sake that he takes this opportunity and embraces it. GO MIKE VICK!

How could Michael Vick have been sent to prison for dog fighting and dante stallworth get out of killing a guy while driving drunk? Crazy. How are they going to use Vick with McNabb? Will he be a third down quarterback in running situations or just interchange the two as they see fit? It’s going to be an interesting combination….two of the highest profile black quarterbacks in history on the same team together at once is pretty cool also.
