If you’re wondering what a legitimate heavyweight fight (anywhere) and a relatively obscure exhibition in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have in common, we just found out: At some point, a guy needs to get paid.
Evander Holyfield was scheduled to receive up to $1 million to fight Sammy Retta this past weekend in Ethiopia, a fundraiser to fight the spread of AIDS in the country. But according to Holyfield’s manager, Ken Sanders, payment never was received. So the event was postponed (if not canceled).
“We were supposed to have the check by early June,” said Sanders, who spent a week with Holyfield in Ethiopia two months ago, setting up the bout. “The guy kept saying, ‘It’s coming, it’s coming. Don’t worry about it.’ But finally, we had to cancel. We weren’t going to do one of those those things, ‘We’ll give you the money when you get here.’”
But there is good news. At least nobody in Ethiopia is trying to foreclose on any of his properties.
Sanders said the local promoter’s sponsor dropped out and now the Ethiopian government has stepped in as a potential financial backer because officials there still desire for the event come off. The tentative rescheduled date is Sept. 11. Holyfield likely will make less than the originally discussed $1 million, and he plans to donate a portion of those earnings to the AIDS cause. The fight against Retta also will be an official bout, sanctioned by the WBC, and not an exhibition.
“It’s a legitimate fight now — but not a hard fight,” said Sanders.
No kidding. While Holyfield is 46 and far removed from the fighter who won championships, Retta is an afterthought: He’s 35, has had only 21 bouts (18-3), never fought anybody of consequence and hasn’t been in the ring in over two years.
Meanwhile, Sanders maintained that Holyfield is still “getting his finances in order,” when asked about recent foreclosure notices on some of his property.
Holyfield also still hopes to get another title shot. This usually is about the time when I would go on some rant and implore him to retire. But I think there’s a better chance of him getting a $1 million check in the mail from Ethiopia.

Why in hell would anyone fight in that 3rd world desolate wasteland which is probably one of the 3 poorest countries on earth? Evander should have had the common sense to realize that half the business done in countries like Ethiopia, Nigeria, etc involve scams and there was no freaking way in hell he was going to get upfront money. Also, if he donated a portion to a local aids charity the money would probably just go into a French villa or Swiss bank account of whatever government figure runs the charity. And even if he did get a check by the time it takes it to clear he would probably realize that the check is phonier than a 3$ bill. He should have had the money wired into an account. What an idiot.

Evander is REALLY disappointing me with his lack of SENSE. He’s tarnsihing himself all because he’s too proud to let go of that castle he’s lived in for so long. It’s embarrasing, you know? What was it he said, “i’m not broke, i’m just not liquid”…WTF????? If he sold that property and cut his losses now, he could’ve still been living like the ‘King of The Ring’ that he would have some money in his coffers. Well, one remains a good sport today! Hint: it’s the one Danica Patrick participates in!
Boxing lost its luster long ago. The only thing good about this fight is donations for AIDS research and treatment. Other than that, it’s a non-event in a sport long ago bereft of its place in sports today.

Evander does have a big heart but I guess that sadly he just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t get how ridiculous it is that he’s earned something 240 or 260 million dollars and yet he’s broke and either bankrupt or almost bankrupt. He’s like the male version of the Atlanta housewives of which 2 or 3 of them are now broke and the other or others will probably be broke within 5 years of profligate spending.
He doesn’t get that you shouldn’t hold yourself up as a man of God and Christian values only to proceed to then have 12 kids by 10 different women or something like that while preaching the word. I guess he missed those parts about adultery and fornication.

You must not watch very much news bro. Everyone knows about the email scams originating from Nigeria mostly but also from other African countries. Anyone who knows history or just a little bit about political science knows that the single biggest problem in Africa is corruption. A lack of moral values and a general breakdown of civilized behavior are also other big problems. Aids doesn’t get spread by westerners in Africa. It gets spread by permissive people who have multiple sex partners. There are obviously scams in the first world also. The difference is that the police try to catch and shut down the scammers. In Africa the police take bribes from the scammers. Its just part of this culture of corruption, lawlessness, lack of morals and lack of values. Sorry dude but it is what it is.

Its shocking how many black athletes and entertainers there are that are broke after making tens of millions. MC Hammer went broke 1 year after making 33 million, Michael Jackson was on the verge of bankruptcy and had been sued by a couple of Arab princes who paid him upfront for future concert performances that Jackson never performed. He basically just scammed the 2 princes and kept their money. Mike Tyson is completely broke after making 400 million dollars. Its not a problem of race. Its obvious that these people cannot govern themselves in a civilized fashion. The best thing that could happen would be for the western nations to go back in and recolonize those countries to try to bring about some order and civility. Ethiopia is now embroiled in a war with Somalia but in the past 20 years has fought with the Sudan and also with 2 breakaway republics in Eritrea and Tigre. Tigre and Eritrea did manage to gain their independence after decades of warfare.

Ethiopia is flourishing and beautiful country. There is poverty like in most developing countries, but this is a land that has a history of more than 3000 years. And it has never been colonized. This country is the seat of the African Union. Therefore, an African-American philantropist athlete is boxing there to be associated with this proud African nation and all of Africa. 1 million dollars is not much for a guy, who is used to earning much more. The population of Mexico is 110 million. 75% of that is 82 million. The population of the US is only about 300 million, so one out of four of us were born in Mexico right??
But, it gets better. The population of India is 1.2 billion with a ‘b’. If 60% of their population is here that is about 720 million, more than twice the population of the US.

We went into Somalia to help protect UN relief aid workers who were distributing food supplies to people devastated by mass starvation. Except the food stocks were being constantly stolen by Somali warlords. So, the UN augmented the relief workers with small detachments of peacekeepers which at the time was thought sufficient to deter further thefts of the food aid.
Then, Muhammad Fara Addid’s forces engaged in a brazen attack on Pakistani UN soldiers, carrying out essentially a massacre of them. In response, the UN asked the Clinton administration to send in more powerful forces. So, Clinton answered the call and sent in US Special Forces to track down and capture the Somali warlords, specifically Addid.
The result was what the public refers to today as “Blackhawk Down.”
I have a particular interest in this as I had the pleasure many times of working with CWO Michael Durant, who was the lone survivor of the Blackhawk helicopter Addid’s militia shot down. I suggest you read his book.
After we withdrew, the situation further deteriorated as Al Qaeda continued to poor weapons into the region. Al Qaeda’s hope is to establish a new series of bases to carry out their training. From this Al Qaeda seeks to destabilize the entire region.
I don’t know what information you cite, but it’s a rather worn out theme to put the onus on America. There are a number of nations in the region who really don’t wish to see Al Qaeda run wild in their territory. If they ask for help I see no reason why we should completely turn our backs on them just because someone like you might try to blame us for the situation.
The point I hope you take from all this is that the world is a shockingly small place. So when you make such a statement, you shouldn’t be surprised there’s someone with some personal experience on the subject who might not turn a blind eye to the statement.

Reading these comments from Ethiopia, I am amazed at the ignorant comments made on this forum about Ethiopia (e.g. desolate, wasteland, email scams, etc.) perhaps from people that have never been to Africa, let alone Ethiopia, and get their world view from U.S. cable news shows or ill-informed newspaper articles like this one (where the author himself makes some joke about Nigerian scams). The comments and this article reinforce to me one of the reasons why I am so happy to have left the U.S. By the way, the reason for selecting September 11 is that it is Ethiopian New Year .

Adane was referring to recent war in December 2006, not the one in 1992. Ethiopia in 2006 invaded Somalia and ousted the Islamic Union that was giving shelter to Al Kahida in East Africa (same guys who bombed U.S. Embassy in Kenya, Tanzania, and blew up U.S. warship in Yemen). U.S. assisted Ethiopian forces with satellite imagery, and Ethiopian mechanized troops had control of all Somalia in 1 week. U.S. Special Forces were later dropped in and embedded with Ethiopian troops, and several USAF night bombing raids were made to kill well-known Al Kahida operatives. After two years of waiting in vain for U.N. or Western troops to replace them, Ethiopia forces pulled out of Somalia. And you can guess who’s creeping back into Somalia now.
As for all the other ignorant comments on this board, MOST e-mail scams originate from within U.S., followed by Eastern Europe, not Africa. 60 Minutes had an episode on that issue…CBS, Sundays, 7pm, try it sometime, learn.

Why the attacks on Ethiopia? Addis is a great town with lots of lush vegetation for those Addis bashers out there. More obvious poverty than North America, duh, but not a bad place to hang out.
As for Holyfield, it sounds like they were dealing with a garden variety promoter from any corner of the Earth, and sensibly enough said they wanted to see the money before they hopped on a jet. No reason to get emotional about it, it is just business.
As for his money problems, one thing they don’t teach in kindergarten is what to do if you make boatloads of money. Most people aren’t ready for it. I’m not at all surprised that he has burned through a quarter of a billion dollars, and wish him the best in getting his finances in order.

Ethiopia is a great nation that is a bacon of hope to the black population of this universe. It is a country that has a proud history and culture where the three main religions (Jews, Christians and Muslims) live in peace like brothers. Tracker, I am aware we are still there and hunting down terrorists. Also aware of the Eritrea, Somalia, Kenyan, Djibouti, and Ethiopian connenctions. However, what you describe lead from what I discussed. I do more than read this stuff in the newspapers. It’s my job!
But to call all this an Ethiopian proxy American war is truly ignorant. First, it’s insulting to the Ethiopians to infer they’d willing fight for America vice themselves. Second, it implies this is all an elective war to further American colonialism. Pick which one of those is most inaccurate — both haven’t a shred of truth to them!
I personally think working with local governments to hunt down Al Qaeda terrorists is a very good thing! None of that has anything to do with a Holyfield fight, but then again, I wasn’t the one who implied any linkage!

Ken Stallings, I’m right with you there…Ethiopia has never fought anyone’s proxy war, and needed no help or permission to enter Somalia. Somalia’s Islamic Union was an Al Kahida disease which needed removal before the entire region got infected. If the rest of the world stepped up to the plate like the U.S. and worked together, we would not be seeing all these recent terrorist bombings around the world.
As for Hollyfield’s money, maybe the deal failed because promoters saw no interest from media. But $1 million is chump change for Ethiopia, a nation keeping American aerospace workers employed for decades with a fleet of Boeing planes purchased. Even now, Ethiopia is globally second in line to receive 10 of Boeing’s latest 787s, and just yesterday placed order for 5 more Boeing 777s, in addition to Airbus planes…Deal worth $4.2 BILLION.

I’m witnessing multivariate comments on this board; some sensible, others not. So here are some facts.
Mr. Sanders is correct. The individual sent over there, a formerly effective boxing promoter from a heretofore defunct company, showed no ability whatsoever to deliver the funds necessary to make the fight happen within the prescribed time frame. If the strategy was to screw up everything and force the Ethiopian Government to come to the rescue for the purposes of them saving face, then it worked. But as for the business acumen showed, it was essentially not.
With regards to Ethiopia, it is a very beautiful country that has poverty issues not unlike the US. Do you US residents have any idea home many people in the USA are poor and living on the street, in their cars, or shacking up with family?
You see and hear about the poverty in Africa through the media quite often, but you don’t see/hear about it in the USA until you walk the streets. There have been so many tent cities erected in the past two years that I dare say it looks much worst than what you see in Addis Ababa.
When the fight does take place, it should benefit many people who need the help. And that’s why it was initiated to begin with.
