Anybody else think Steve Spurrier was funnier when he had a good football team?
Spurrier threw himself on the mercy of the SEC media Friday — and how low must you go to do that? — saying he was the coach who did not vote for Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as a first-teamer on the pre-season all-SEC team. Spurrier’s vote came as a surprise, given that Tebow has won a Heisman Trophy (he should’ve won two), played on two national championship teams and leads many to believe that he’s the best college football player in history, including Georgia coach Mark Richt. (See quote below.) Also, Spurrier has one or two ties to the Gators.
Well, now Spurrier says it was all a mistake. He said one of his staff members at South Carolina actually filled out the ballot for the All-SEC team. That’s not only believable, it’s highly probable. Coaches seldom do this sort of thing themselves. It’s often a low-level assistant or somebody in the school’s sports information office. (And while we’re on the subject: The head coaches that “vote” in the polls that REALLY matter seldom do that themselves, either. They have more important things on their mind, like winning games and personal survival.)
But here’s the question: What are the odds that Spurrier actually did what he said — that he saw the ballot and signed off on it without actually noticing Mississippi’s Jevan Snead was listed as the SEC’s No. 1 QB? How do you not notice Tim Tebow is missing from the All-SEC team?
If it’s almost any other coach, I’m probably inclined to believe him. But this is Spurrier. He’s not evil. He’s harmless. He’s an entertainer. The man lives to tweak. He lives to goof around and get under an opponent’s skin — and by the way, I have no problem with that.
So let me lay out this scenario: Spurrier’s assistant filled out the ballot, Spurrier saw it, laughed and said, “Ah, what the heck. Let’s have some fun with this.”
Hey, just throwing it out there. (Let me add this, too: This who didn’t-vote-for-Tebow drama has played out for two weeks.)
I know Spurrier has nothing against Tebow — he has praised him as much as everybody else has. But his ego has to have taken a few shots in recent years, given what Urban Meyer has done with the Florida program that Spurrier turned around and Ron Zook let deteriorate. Spurrier is no less of a deity in Gainesville than he was before Meyer arrived. But now he’s sharing the stage. Can we really put this past him? It created a story. Spurrier lives for stories. What else is he going to do? Tell everybody how great South Carolina is going to be? Nobody would believe that.
Back to Richt: How high is his admiration for Tebow? Here’s a quote I have leftover from Thursday: “He might be the greatest player-slash-leader ever in college football. When you take his ability, his production, his leadership, his ability to get everybody to rally around him, I don’t know if there’s many like that.”
OK. Your turn. Any thoughts on Spurrier’s apology?

No Jeff, no thoughts at all. This might be the biggest overblown non-story I have seen in a long long time. So Tebow did not get a lousy stinkin’ SEC vote. Life will go on. Tebow will be fine. He probably couldn’t give a crap anyway. Good lord. LET IT GO.

Huh, Phoenix Falcon — I agree the pre-season All-SEC team is an overblown story. Even Tebow laughed at it Thursday in one of the news conferences. But when one coach doesn’t vote for such an obvious pick, it is a story — especially in SEC country.

Jeff, I don’t think you would believe any SEC coach unless that coach was Mark Richt. Seriously, if Mark Richt had been the one who failed to vote for Tebow, you would have written a lengthy article defending him and how signing off on a card of relative or total unimportance was normal and that Richt had far better things to do. Well, I believe Spurrier did the same and you want to make a stupid story about it. Don’t you have anything else better to write about. Who cares about preseason rankings of players anyway? Go write a relevant story about the upcoming football season like your AJC mate Bradley is doing this morning. My, my, what we won’t do with time on our hands.

This is the same complaint I had of Thom Brennaman after the BCS Championship game when he was offended that Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford or Graham Harrell could not possibly be as good a player as Tebow. What makes it so deplorable for someone to think another QB is as good or better than Tim Tebow? Even is Spurrier did vote Jevan Sneed over Tebow, why does he need to apologize for that? Beyond that, why does everyone else seem to think it’s their responsibility to get offended for Tebow. He wasn’t wronged in any way, so another person got ONE STINKIN VOTE…. big deal, it’s not exactly a war crime against humanity. Spurrier ain’t exactly guilty of genocide just because he voted for Sneed.

Think about this, if some staff guy did this, that staff guy would have had to do have doen two two things:
1) Actually think that someone was more deserving than Tebow,
2) Think that Spurrier wouldn’t mind his name being connected to that ballot.
Even if 1 were true (unlikely) don’t you think at least he warns Spurrier? Would you take the chance of making the coach look stupid? No way.

This whole affair pretty much makes me sick. I mean, if Spurrier wanted Tebow on there and just didn’t notice, then the apology’s fine.
It just seems to me that Spurrier was forced into saying he wanted Tebow on the first team. I mean, if he hadn’t said it was a mistake, the press would’ve been all over it (even more than they already are) and said that Spurrier is somehow “disrespecting” Tebow.
I mean, God forbid someone NOT think Tim Tebow isn’t the Second Coming. I know that everyone’s in love with him, but trying to crucify a guy because he didn’t vote him first-team All-SEC is just absurd. The last time I checked, everyone has the right to believe whatever they wanna believe and vote however they wanna vote.
If I was Tebow, I’d be glad just to be on the first-team. Whether or not it was a unanimous vote is inconsequential.

Another matter that not many people are aware of. Spurrier wanted the Georgia job badly when Goff was hired. Ken Hatfield was to be offered the job. The selection committee went to the Cotton Bowl, and interviewed Hatfield, then flew directly to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl. By then, the Georgia staff got together and wanted to push Bill Lewis for the job. Then Lewis and Goff ended up interviewing and Goff received the job because he promised to keep the staff intact, and pushed that he was a former Georgia player, a Georgia graduate, and currenty a Georgia Coach. He was hired on the spot, the day before the game with Michigan State.
In the end, Spurrier was bitter that he did not get the job, and he has held it against Georgia since. Question is, would you have hired the Duke coach, after his professional coaching flop?

In his mind, SOS still believes he is the greatest qb ever. A vote for Tebow would be admitting someone is better. Spurrier competes every Saturday at the qb position vicariously thru the poor soul he is coaching. SOS is a mediocre coach who had unreal talent at fl, and two of the three stooges coaching at UGA. Maybe now the governing body for the Coach’s Poll will take notice and try to put a process in place that will assure the head coach actually did in fact fill out and submit his weekly ballot for the weekly top 25. Good luck finding your ammo, try the “Cheaper than Dirt” catalog if you haven’t already.

Crap, crap, & more crap. If I see another story on the famous “Tebow snub” or another Michael Jackson story, I think I may slit my wrists, or at least puke from having both subjects shoved down my throat. You mark my words….we will hear about this “snub” every time Florida plays on TV this season.

Was Spurrier the sleazeball coach who made this statement re the Vols-
the slimeball coach who was afraid he would lose a recruit to UT:
Freom Kiffins SEC interview-
He answered them all, and even talked about a recent question from the parent of a recruit, who Kiffin said had been told by another coach that Tennessee is a “renegade program” like Miami from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
“We’ve had one full semester of school, OK?” Kiffin said, recalling his response during a final session with several hundred print and Internet reporters early Friday afternoon. “A renegade program would never have the largest GPA jump in over four years. … We’ve been there over seven months and had zero arrests. To me, that speaks volumes about discipline.”

Oh good, I can start sleeping again…now that I know who the sinner was that didn’t vote for Tebow. Phew, glad we have some crack reporting that could clear this up.
Now, let’s start identifying the heathens who did not vote for Obama.

Not a story worth writing? Just look at the number of posts here. If no one cared, the comments section would be empty. Score one for Jeff.
As far as it being Spurrier, I believe he has demonstrated the capacity for ego and to hold a grudge. Whether either was the reason behind the Tebow snub is a debatable issue but both traits leave him open to suspicion.

Herschel Talker — thanks (twice).
Joe — It’s an interesting debate. But that was Mark Richt who said that, and he coaches at Georgia, last I checked.
Sassygirl — you go girl!
Underdog — did you just put Tim Tebow and Michael Jackson in the same sentence?
Corrine — why are you interested? Want to buy me a drink?
Nunyabiz — Thanks for the comments.

wxwax… they let Spurrier twit and tease because he has a brain. Kniffin does not. The SEC is just trying to protect the Tn coach from further ridicule. Sounds reasonable to me.
And to Jeff and all AJC sports writers. Do not use the Arkansas coaches name in any future columns. He is not worth the space in your publication.

It’s an absolutely insightful article. Even when I hated Spurrier for thrashing GA and running up the score, I always loved that he said SOMETHING.
I dream of a day when a player or coach says ‘we’re looking forward to playing the next two games at the same time’.
You’re spot on Jeff. He loves to do this sort of thing. I believe it was Erin Andrews last year interviewing him who asked ‘why haven’t you been able to re-create the same success at SC?’ ‘Well, I reckon we’re just not very good coaches’ with that smarmy smile.
Good stuff. Thanks.

Sorry,
My post was removed and I know why. I was just saying that this is an insightful and accurate portrayal of Spurrier. Even as a GA fan who hated him thumping us and running up the score, I always loved that he said SOMETHING. He’s terribly clever at it. Doesn’t anyone else dream of a day when a coach or player looks forward to playing the next two games at the same time?
When a certain reporter asked him last year why he wasn’t able to re-create the same success at SC, he responded ‘I guess we’re just not very good coaches’ all the while maintaining that smarmy smile.
Good stuff. Thanks.

Spurrier knows and has said that Tebow is probably the greatest player to ever play college football….so who cares about wheather he voted for Tebow or not. It does show that people are still angry about getting their rears smashed for several years in a row when he was at Florida. Oh and by the way, USC will be 2 & 0 to start the season.

I think spurrier lied but i found it totally offensive that every coach was asked this question as if it was an afront to Tebow that he did not get every vote.

Spurrier is a snake and will never win at south Carolina. Kiffin did a excellent job for his first media days. Didn’t back away from any questions and gave a great speech. I’m excited for the future. Go vols!
