Vick may get four-game suspension (and some bad pub)

Michael Vick may finally be getting some clarity about his NFL future. Now all we need is some clarity about Michael Vick.
Vick is free to sign with an NFL team but may be suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell for the first four games of the season, ESPN is reporting. (UPDATE:NFL spokesman Greg Aiello is denying the report, sort of, writing on his Twitter account: “Despite what ESPN says, commish has made no decisions on MVick.”)
Vick has been on indefinite suspension since Aug. 24, 2007, following an indictment for dog-fighting and related charges that led to an eventual guilty plea. Goodell reportedly is going to opt for a conditional reinstatement that would allow him to sign with a team, even with the impending suspension. He is holding off on the announcement, waiting to see if Vick commits further transgressions, according to ESPN.
Maybe that’s not a bad idea.
I wrote the other day that I felt the commissioner needed to move on with reinstating the former Falcon so that the rest of us can move on with this issue. The longer the issue dragged out, the longer the healing process would be.
But then came a report Thursday on the website The Big Lead that Vick visited a strip club in Virginia Beach shortly after his home confinement ended and his ankle bracelet was removed. Vick, who denies the report, remains on probation. Certainly, visiting a strip club is not a parole violation. But it would show unparalleled stupidity on Vick’s part, given his No. 1 objective right now should be straightening out his life and improving his public image.
However, Vick’s camp is denying the strip club report. Allen Iverson, who was reported to have gone to the strip club with Vick, also shot down the story and said he hasn’t even seen Vick since his release.
NFL training camps begin next week. No team has yet publicly expressed interest in signing Vick. Several teams have said they won’t. That’s not surprising. While coaches and general managers are intrigued by Vick’s talents, they’re cognizant there will be an initial strong public relations backlash if they sign him. Even if the strip club report proves false, the fact such a story spread so quickly and dramatically illustrates the circus atmosphere that still surrounds the former Pro Bowler.
Vick and Goodell reportedly met for three hours Wednesday at Buckley Peterson Global, Inc., a security firm, in Allendale, N.J. But league officials would not confirm that or any details of Vick’s status.
The timing of Vick’s release, just before camps open, works against him. Camp rosters and quarterback depth charts are fairly set. Vick wouldn’t have time to absorb a new playbook for the upcoming season.
But many believe he could still contribute in a limited role. At least, starting in game five.

After killing dumb animals that won’t kill another in a fight to the death, testing positive for marijuana while awaiting sentencing and knowing he would be tested, and trying to sneak a water bottle through airport security, if Vick did visit a strip joint before meeting with Goddell he just could qualify as the single most stupid person on the planet!
Even if the strip club visit didn’t occur, he is already a finalist. And people still wonder why Vick hadn’t a clue where his receivers were on the field?

It amazes me how so many haters said the Vick would never be successful in the NFL as a quaterback. However after 2 pro bowl years, becoming the face of the NFL, having the top selling jersey, and selling out the dome for several years, now again, he’s not capable of playing quarterback. However, half the starting quarterbacks are average at best and they sincerely can’t create the excitement Vick can. Let along full a stadium.
The last time I checked the NFL regular season was 16 games long. If the 4 game suspension is accurate that would allow Vick more time to absord a playbook. Dan Reeves utilizes Vick’s talents to the max and the results made Vick a Star.
If the NFL is the copycat league that we keep hearing, some team will recognize this fact and give him a chance. Hopefully, when his opportunity comes, he will take full advantage and shout the mouths of Millions.

Seriously cut the race crap. Quite frankly what Mike Vick did was atrocious, however, other NFL players have done much much worse and got other chances i.e. Leonard Little. He has not finished paying his debt to society, but should be allowed to the chance to do so. As far as being a great quarterback…..he had some great games, but I wouldn’t put him as a great quarterback. Greatest athlete at quarterback position?…..definitely. I hope some team and it’s surrounding community give him a second chance, but with what he did no one can expect him to welcomed back with open arms. Just not plausible.

The justice system has a weird way of working. Heatley accidently kills his friends….no jail time. Vick runs interstate gambling ring, and kills dogs….18 months. Little kills a woman on his 2ND DUI…..no jail time. Stallworth kills a man while over the legel limit which is considered drunk…..24 24 days jail time. Ray Lewis hops in the car and rides home with the men that just killed someone in a fight he was involved in…….no jail time……and my guess is if it had been any of us that hopped in that ride we would have been charged with accessory to murder. A freind of mine punches a cop while drunk and gets 30 days.

Vick was and will always be a lousy quarterback who was fun to watch, be he flipping off the hometown crowd or quitting at the end of the season. He and his brother were raised without a moral compass and it reflects in the way they handle their personal and professional lives.
Compare/Contrast the way Matt Ryan comports himself against Mike Vick’s behavior. In the years to come, we will look at the comparisons between Ryan/Vick in the same way we laugh at the Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf debate in 1998.

Here are my thoughts about Vick. He served his time. He served more than anyone else. Now we have another NFL who killed someone in a DUI case. No one has said a word about it… No protest. Nothing. What about the othe people convicted with Vick? Does anyone know their names? Also, the person who cooperated first was more involved than Vick and he gets 2 to 4 months in jail. This was a 365 day a year operation. There is no way Vick could play an entire football season…with some playoff games and travel back and forth to VA to be the ring leader in the dog fighting operation.

What most people tend to forget is Vick denied all of this and fought the allegation tooth and nail from the beginning. He never said he was sorry about it, etc. The state of Virginia would not prosecute him, so the FEDS stepped in and did. That was that his big mistake. Had he fessed up with the state, he would have certainly only received probation.

Since when is a “gossip” website credible enough for the AJC or any other paper to run a front page story on the issue of Vick going to a strip club? That was a @#$%-ing joke, when I saw that this morning. This paper and journalism as a whole is going in the toilet. Schultz, the fact you would even comment on something so stupid is beyond words. Plus, there is no law against that in the first place, so why report on it? To cast him in a more negative light to prevent his reinstatement? Something about sports brings out that “true hater” in a whole lot of folks. That being said, bottom line is, whatever is destined to happen with Mike’s future, WILL HAPPEN. Yes to answer the unspoken question, I do love animals. But they are just that, animals. No matter how cute, how many haircuts, clothes, kisses, hugs you give them, they are still animals. Yes they feel pain and I would never condone they type of actions that Mike Vick was convicted of bankrolling, but again he has served his time according to the laws enacted. Of course there is always that select group of people who feel a person of color can never serve enough time, but hey, whatcha gonna do? Vick served his time in a federal prison and lost all his fortune. I have never been much of a VIck fan, but he has paid his debt. Reinstate the man and let him get on with his life.

Some of you folks need to step back and think for a moment…
1. You can’t take Vick’s crimes and anothers, then try to compare time served with regards to “fairness”. That’s like asking why a Trooper singled you out when “everyone” was speeding around you?
2. What Vick did went WAY past just “killing” a dog. The brutality with which he acted is really far beyond criminal….
3. This was NOT Vick’s first “incident” when it comes to breaking the law. Then what does he do? Smokes some dope when he knows the spotlight is on him for his “other” criminal misgivings.
So this guy obviously thumbs his nose at the justice system whether he is white,black, etc……Sorry. I do think he deserves a chance, but how many more does he get before this repeated offender get’s it right?
