The fact that Joe Montana and Bill Walsh were legends in San Francisco doesn't mean Joe son, Nick, would have been a savior for Georgia. (AP photo)
For those who don’t know, I worked in San Francisco before coming to Atlanta in 1989. Or, to look at it another way: I went from watching Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, the greatest football coach and quarterback, respectively, I’ve ever seen, win Super Bowls, to covering Marion Campbell and Chris Miller . . . neither of whom were too great at anything or won very much at all. (That said, Campbell was a lot more amusing than Walsh.)
I say this because you’d think my first inclination when I read that Joe Montana’s son, Nick, was going to enroll at Washington instead of Georgia, my reaction would be similar to the AJC.com headline I just read: “Bulldogs’ plea: Say it ain’t so Joe.”
Comment: Huh?
Never met Montana’s son. I’m sure he’s a good kid and he might even turn out to be a very good college quarterback. But nobody in Athens should be fretting over this.
1) Nick Montana is ranked as the No. 12 high school QB by Rivals and No. 13 by Scout. We all know recruiting services are as predictable as a ping pong ball in a wind tunnel. That said, neither ranking screams, “Star!” The fact his last name is Montana doesn’t mean Nick will turn out to be, you know, an extraordinary Joe.
2) If any fan base should be upset, it’s Notre Dame’s. Montana was a legend there. When he arrived in South Bend in 1974, he was seventh on the depth chart. But he ended up become one of the most famous players to come off a campus known for famous players. (It may be hard to remember. But Notre Dame used to be good.) His comeback victories in consecutive Cotton Bowls is what led Walsh to draft him (in the third round, but that’s another story.)
But how would you feel if you were in Notre Dame now and you just found out your school got spurned for . . . Washington? The Huskies went 0-12 last year. I know. The Montanas have known new coach Steve Sarkisian since his days as a USC assistant. But this might be the strongest statement yet on the Charlie Weis era. He couldn’t even recruit Joe Montana’s son.
3) Matthew Stafford is gone but Georgia seems set at quarterback for a while. Yes, there are questions about Joe Cox (and for that matter, No. 2 Logan Gray). But there are two coveted freshmen on the depth chart behind them: Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Other than not being named Montana, neither has an obvious flaw. And Murray certainly isn’t inferior to Murray, who was ranked No. 3 by Scout and Rivals.
If there’s one thing Mark Richt has shown at Georgia, it’s an ability to coach the quarterback position. (His last three: Stafford, D.J. Shockley, David Greene.) The Dogs will survive without a Montana.

I agree, He is a talent, but we have the QB job in order for now. I did not think for a moment that he would come out to ANY SEC or ACC school. It’s too far away from home. I wish him well on the West coast. We need defensive players and lot’s of them. Let’s go after what we need.

It would’ve been good exposure for the program to get a Montana in here but I agree with you Jeff – there was no guarantee of greatness. I’m wondering anyway if his prospect ranking is a tad artificially elevated strictly because of that surname. Good luck to him though – he’ll definitely need it at Washington.

They’re right, UGA is set at QB for several yrs now.
Why would Montana want to come to UGA in it’s 2010 class when their ‘09 class landed 2 big time QB’s (Murray & Mettenberger).
Most of the time, HOF player’s kids aren’t as good as their dad. So, Nick probably isn’t as good as his dad.

Was this article an attempt to bring any ray of hope to the UGA program? They just lost out on a sub-par quarterback who would rather play at Washington. Give me a break.

“Montana was a legend there. When he arrived in South Bend in 1974, he was seventh on the depth chart.”
I’m guessing that would’ve put him rather low in the Rivals or Scout rankings. As you said, rankings mean little. However, pedigree goes a long way in many sports.
That said, I don’t care about UGA, and I’m glad to see Montana choose a different school because quite honestly he would’ve been over hyped by UGA fans and under performing by their lofty standards. In Washington there’s nowhere but to go but up (0-12 season last year).

I really don’t give a crap about Montana being here. I think it would cause more headache than good. Joe Montana sitting in the stands would cause the coaches to feel obligated to play his son. To our coaches credit, that is likely one reason Montana didn’t come to UGA. They likely told Joe that they would not promise Nick anything and he would have to battle some of the best QB recruits in the land for a starting role. And to be honest, Montana is part of one of the worst QB classes we’ve seen in years. And he isn’t even ranked as one of the top 3 QBs. Why did we even risk wasting a scholly on that kid? Unfortunately for UT, who put all their cards on the table to get a big QB recruit this year, they are up the creek as far as a top notch QB goes. There aren’t any. LOL!

When young Montana visited Athens I found some video footage of him on the internet. Nice throwing motion, and good ability to throw on the run. But he looks really thin, especially in the legs. I know his father didn’t have a great physical build during his playing days but the game has changed. With size and speed of defensive linemen and linebackers, every extra pound of muscle helps ward off injuries.
I hope the young lad does well at Washington.

It’s really amazing that the AJC ran the Nick Montana story under the headline: “Montana spurns UGA.” Really, from everything I’ve read Bama and Ohio State were in the lead for his services but that’s the headline you guys wrote? Which by the way has been taken down, thanks… I guess.
If the AJC hates the Dawgs so much then at least be MORE obvious about it next time.
I also agree with what a lot of others have posted. Nick wouldn’t get a sniff of the starting job for a while at UGA and wanted to have a chance at a starting job. One of the two great incoming QB’s might be red shirted and that would put him even further down in playing time for the next couple of years.
Good luck in the future Nick.

I didn’t know much about his college career but he was the second overall pick in the NFL draft by NO Saints so he was obviously talented and accomplished. Check out the ND blogs, Jeff. Show me the “fuming”. Most want are are confident about getting Andrew Hendrix anyway. Montana was a legacy, of course it would be nice to see another Montana in South Bend (Since the one there now is not likely to ever play a minute) but what really is wanted is a quality QB recruit and Montana was not #1 in Irish eyes for that anyway.

Jeff,
Dawgs didn’t need him anyway. I liked your article as usual but you were dead wrong when you said that these recruiting services are about as accurate as a ping pong ball in a wind tunnel. The teams with the consistenly top recruiting classes like USC, OU, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, LSU, UGA, are also the teams that are almost allways in the top 10 every year. You can point out 2 star rated athletes that excelled and made it to the nfl and 5 star athletes that bombed. These are the exception and not the rule. If you actually look at where these players end up after their college careers you will find these recruiting ratings surprisingly accurate.
For example a 5 star player has a 40% chance coming out of high school of being drafted in the nfl’s 1st 3 rounds 4 years later. The % of being drafted drops significantly with each downgrade of a star and a 2 star rated recruiting coming out of high school has less than a 1 % chance of being drafted 4 years later. 4 stars are something like 15% and 3 stars something like 5% chance of being drafted 4 years later.
Last, look at wide receivers Julio Jones of Alabama and AJ Green of Georgia, 2 5 star rated players coming out of high school. Is there anybody who doesn’t think after their 1st year in college that these 2 guys won’t end up in the 1st or 2nd round of the NFL draft in 3 or 4 years? And can ya name me a 2 or 3 star wide receiver who played as a freshman in college last year that most people would agree is gonna be playing in the nfl? This is a little more accurate than a ping pong in a wind tunnel.

This is a guy who takes off his shirt to impress teenage boys. You signed a dude that helped another person rape his cousin. I don’t think your program needs to talk trash about other schools. In terms of the Montana kid committing to Washington, he never committed to or said that he was leaning to UGA. He is a west coast kid. UGA did not make a big deal out of it; the AJC did. I’m sure he is a great kid, but he would have never started at UGA. We have 3 great young QB’s in our program. I am still wondering why other school fans are reading UGA blogs. I have no interest in other school blogs and I certainly don’t post on them. I don’t keep up with other schools. UT needs to worry about the best team in their own state, Vandy…..

But half of those 5-star recruits will turn out to be bupkus for any of a number of reasons. And that’s what I’m talking about.

Let’s try to understand this.
You quote an AJC “headline,” which as anyone in the news business understands, the writer never does the headline for the print editions. It is normally the copy setter who creates the headlines to fill column space evenly.
But, that’s a technical detail. Frankly, you used an AJC creation to morph a column about it. Circular logic, you’ve met yourself.
Frankly, this newsworthy only because it is Joe Montana’s son. Beyond that, he’s a four-star QB (perhaps three stars) who got an offer from Washington and he’ll have to play his way onto the field.
Even his father was relatively unknown coming out of Notre Dame. No one expected him to become the legend he became.
There’s a final point here. Kids of great athletes should be given their space to perform. Columnists like you even if they attempt to level the expectation, just increase the pressure. Was this really a subject worthy of a column? You define whether is, but I wonder?

These kids mature early and late. Some come into college at the best they are ever going to be. The others catch up with them and pass them. Some make poor choices and get into trouble and never reach potential. Some continue to improve and become great college players.
Names, Archie was a great quarteback, and I loved watching him play college ball. His sons were better at college, and apparently pro ball too! They you have the Sims kid, Walter Peyton’s son, Tony Dorsett’s son, some have the gift some don’t.
Lets’ hope the Montana kid does great at Washington. It looks like he and Stafford have similar challenges at different levels.
Was he offered by UGA, Notre Dame, and others schools?
Maybe that is the real question?

Four years from now I highly suspect the Montana kid will not even be the starter. Kids of legends very rarely succeed in their parents footsteps. The Mannings are about the only ones I can think of…and I don’t think Nick is Peyton or Eli caliber talent…and to be candid, I don’t think Joe was the athlete Archie was. Oh yeah, UGA has enough talentd QB’s. They certainly don’t need a potential problem player riding the bench taking up a scholarship that could be better used elsewhere.

Don’t know why you would say DAWG FANS NEED TO CALM DOWN. The writers, not the fans are making the big deal about it. We are set at this position for a while and the kid would have been NUTS to come to the UGA campus to try and compete for play time.
What we fans SHOULD me pi$$ed at is our home or state paper makes the headline MONTANA SHUNS UGA. He chose his school over a dozen or more others yet our writer wants to wants to report is as if something is wrong at UGA. Why not make it a positive for the home team?
You don’t see comments that UGA fans are upset!!! Why should it be reported this way.

Of course this is the way dawgie nation will spin this. Montana spurns UGA so the line will be, “Oh, he wasn’t going to be any good anyway” –but if he would have signed with UGA, “Oh, Nick Montana is going to be a great one at UGA!”

Is anyone really fretting and losing sleep over this? Nobody East of the Mississippi would even know who this guy was if not for his name.

Take note: RAMBLE ON is a BIG GIRL, not a big guy. However, she more closely resembles a guy, so we can call it even. “Pat” is easier to write than RAMBLE ON…

Nobody I know really thought this kid was coming anyway. I probably won’t get but 15 to 16 hours of sleep thinking about this tonight! WE WANT TO READ SOMETHING ON BAMA FORFEITING GAMES AND LOSS OF SCOLLYS, BECAUSE OF TEXTBOOK GATE 2007!!

If Nick Montana has the same strong traits as his Dad: humility, talent, and a genuine good man– then Washington got a good one!
As for Georgia, Joe Cox, Aaron Murray and his fellow QB’s are all very good.
The Dawgs are loaded at QB!

i agree with the comment that this is a statement about Charlie Weis. of course, the kid could simply just want to stay relatively close to home and has a bond with Sarkisian.
part of me can’t help believe that if Urban Meyer were at ND, he would have signed Nick, though…

I haven’t heard one Georgia fan even acknowledge the fact that Nick Montana chose Washington because no one cares.

I know from an inside source that Montana rejected UGA because he knows the program is moving in the wrong direction, South. The program is undercoached, and overrated and wastes so much talent year after year.
There were also concerens about the racist and redneck atmosphere around UGA, and he preferred a program more progressive in terms of race relations. The amount of rebel flags, blue jean shorts, white socks with black shoes, goaties, and oakleys was disturbing.

I dunno why everyone wants to question Joe C.’s ability as a QB.
In two seasons as a starter at Indepedence High he passed for 112 TD’s, & 8,734 yards.
Imagine what this kid would have done had he not been playing behind Chris Leak…..

Going to be another rough year in Athens…8-4 at best. I suggest UGA fans sue the AD and ask for their money back, since this program has not even come close to playing for a national title for over 20 years…and only has 1 title with 116 years on the books.
