Michael Vick looked grim when he began his prison sentence in November of 2007. Given circumstances, he may not look much better when he gets out. (AP photo.)
Sometime in the next few days, Michael Vick will step outside of prison walls and straight into hell.
He will have supporters. That’s fine. The man has paid his debt to society, slept on a cot in Leavenworth for several months and took a bigger hit to his status, his reputation and his income than possibly any athlete in history.
He will have detractors. That’s also fine. Because for as much as Vick has every right to resume his football career, you have every right not to like it. It’s why so many NFL executives are sitting alone in the dark today, weighing that risk-reward thing.
But Vick’s ability to return to football will be based on something far more impactful than the strength of his legs or arm. A New York Times story this week included a common but equally bizarre assumption: “Vick may still be better than half the quarterbacks on NFL rosters.”
If this were all about skill, Vick never would have been in jail to begin with.
This isn’t 2001, when he was embraced by a punch-drunk franchise in a lampooned sports city. This isn’t 2004 when he brought the Falcons to within a victory of the Super Bowl and was given a $130 million contract.
In 2009, Michael Vick is not a hero or a marketing centerpiece. He is an ex-felon and a marketing pariah.
He will be vilified by half the fans in the city he plays in and most fans everywhere else. He will have every move scrutinized by a public and media ready to pounce and mock and an NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, who didn’t like being lied to.
He will be in a locker room where most teammates will say the right thing, something like, “He’s served his time. If he can help us win, I support him.”
But those same players will then step outside and see the picket signs, the news crews, the elephants, the 17 clowns trying stuff themselves into a Volkswagen and maybe that same plane that two years ago circled the field at Falcons’ training camp with a banner reading: “New Team Name: Dog Killers.” And they will think, “I don’t need this. We don’t need this. I wish he was someplace else.”
The success of any pro athlete, particularly an NFL quarterback, is not fast legs or a strong arm. It’s all of those things Vick failed miserably at: leadership, work ethic, resolve, toughness, maturity, teamwork, character.
Michael Vick’s failure as a quarterback had very little to do with his passing accuracy. It had almost everything to do with the intangibles. Vick must come by them in the worst of circumstances. He must come by them when our last memory of him was looking feeble in a season-ending game at Philadelphia, accepting no responsibility for going 2-6 down the stretch and losing 14 of his last 24 starts. He once reacted to the pressure by giving the middle finger to fans at a home game. He all but threw his coach, Jim Mora, and teammates under the bus after that loss to the Eagles. Then he began his off-season with a suspicious water bottle at the Miami airport, was eventually let go by police and rather than breathe a thankful sigh of relief, he suggested maybe somebody was trying to frame him.
Leaders don’t do that. Any of that.
If Vick can return, if he can endure the taunts and grow up and flash any semblance of the magic he once showed us on a football field, this comeback story will top all others.
Unfortunately, the backdrop suggests otherwise. And at least in prison, there has been solitude.

Cowgirl, I never said I hated Vick. I just don’t believe he is this great football player some are trying to make him out to be. When Vick was drafted I was excited and couldn’t wait to see him on the field. After that it was just wait til next year. He never proved he could be consistant. His last two years were horrible, loosing record, saying he didn’t give 100%, flipping the bird ect………….I just got tired of it. He has paid his debt to society and the Falcons owe him nothing.

I love the cowgirls ((Whatever!)) Put silliness aside you are right What!!! But don’t forget the NFL is nothing but entertainment and MV provides that !! And another thing MV is still better than most QBs in the NFL!! and for the last 2yrs , If his receivers had not dropped all them passes MV might have run less and thrown more and would have had more confidence in his teammates!! He tried to hard to win games on his own and you just can’t do that on a team sport!!!

There are so many, those who are in higher positions than Vick was, who are engaged in, was engaged in, participate in, did participate in, are linked to, were linked to, support, did support, either DIRECTLY or INDIRECTLY to questionable activities. These may or may not be as evil as dogfighting, but they exist. The difference is that they have not been exposed. Many of those in higher positions are hiding behind others. This could have been the same with Vick. Who knows? Only Vick and them (God, of course). Why is it that we are so bent on not forgiving and moving on? Look at past presidents, no one is picketing at their doorsteps or gravesites. We must learn to be forgiving. We must teach this to our children so in the future their children will learn the better qualities that help us a society to progress. If a child is suspended from school, he is able to return. Why can’t Vick be given the opportunity to do what he does for a career? Why cant’t those who are respected for being animal rights activists remember that they are not perfect either and that he may be remorseful. He does have to live with it everyday. I am sure there are many who are for animal rights who smoke and that second hand smoke has affected someone, somewhere and ……Do you get the point?

By Big easy-Pitbulls are vicious animals. Those dogs are good for only one thing and thats attacking something.
ERRR..Wrong!! I have raised dogs all my life. I own 2 pits now and they don’t attack anything but their food bowls and yard toys. And I have never had an incedent where they have come close to harming another human or dog. So try again. It’s the way the owners treat them. So.. do you have pitbulls? Have you ever owned any pitbulls? If not then you have no idea what you are talking about. Stick to football. You’re good at that.

I’m back…..hello What!!! Sorry to see you’ve had to fend off the dogs (no pun intended) by yourself. If I see one more person compare Matt Ryan to Ryan Leaf I think I will go nuts. Again, Ryan surpassed Leaf’s career TDs in one season. Leaf was a basketcase, Ryan is an ambassador for the Falcons and the NFL.
I simply do not understand why Falcon fans (or so they say they are Falcon fans) would think that this team would be MORE successful with MV7 at QB. I truly believe, without prejudice or doubt, that 98% of MV7 supporters would rather see Vick at QB and win less games, than see Ryan at QB and win more games. That is so very sad, and I hate that it is true.

VICK SUPPORTER 2:
Anyone who compares Ryan Leaf to Matt Ryan is severely insane. In addition, yes, MV did take us to the playoffs on occasion, and win some playoff games. But he also had losing seasons here and seasons in which he didn’t take us to the playoffs.
I’m a MV fan, always was. But he ruined himself here in Atlanta. The most ridiculous thing I keep reading is “Give MV a second chance” or “Have all you people dogging him never done anything wrong”?
First, MV was given SEVERAL second chances and he wasted them all. If you don’t believe me, please reference the following: Lying to Goodell, lying to Arthur Blank, defrauding on loans, the water bottle at Miami airport, the photo of him with a blunt in a limo, the airtran fiasco, etc… I could go on and on. The point is he continually was given another chance by the organization, by this city, and by me. But after too many second chances, PLUS a felony conviction, I no longer want him here. That doesn’t make me a racist and that doesn’t mean I’m pulling against him. I wish him the best. But you have to earn my support. I don’t blindly support any athlete, black or white.
As for the all the people on this board bashing Vick but not looking in the mirror. Yes, we all have sinned and will continue to do so. But no one else on this board was paid MILLIONS of dollars to be the LEADER of a franchise. With great fame and money comes great responsibility. MV did not handle his responsibilies as the Falcons QB. And any time you are in the public eye, you are going to be scrutinized when you make mistakes. It’s part of the territory.

Hamad I’m with you. It’s so funny to read how some are trying their best to prove that Vick was a continual success with the Falcons. They keep saying FACTS……FACTS……FACTS!!!!! So I’ll try. Fact…Vick had some success with the Falcons. However, facts prove that it was but for a moment. Fact…Vick proved by his own playing that he did not have the talent or the will to be a true leader for this team. I mean, DANG, you would think 130 million would light some kind of leadership fire under his butt! Not with Vick! And fact, every NFL team who has a face of the franchise QB builds their team around that QB’s strength. Tried it with Vick just didn’t work. Not saying Vick is stupid or anything like that but his “COLLEGE OPTION” just didn’t last in the NFL. Good holy grief, a d-lineman would fart and Vick would take off running! That’s why the receivers didn’t have good numbers with Vick at QB! Boy MATT RYAN sure changed that!!

I love the way anyone who’s white who chooses to not support Vick after 45 second chances is a racist. I used to love MV the player. I was thrilled the day we drafted him. Michael Turner – awesome! Roddy White – maybe the best young WR in the NFL. Curtis Lofton – badass!!! Jamaal Anderson – BUST!!!!!! I want him gone. Ryan – love the guy. Brooking – thrilled he’s outta here. See, I like and dislike players of all races. But my opinion stems from their actions, not their skin color.
Vick supporters, please, choosing not to support a convicted felon being on my team does not make me a racist. But, ask yourselves, what does blindly supporting Vick over Matt Ryan make you? And I’ll say this, if Matt Ryan gets involved in the same type of illegal crap, my comments about him will be every bit as harsh. Vick was paid millions to not F up, and he F’ed up. It’s on him.
If he has, in fact, learned his lesson, he ABSOLUTELY deserves another chance to play. I just don’t want him here. And it has nothing to do with him being black.

What Michael Vick and his badnewz boys did was reprensible, cruel and cowardly to use just a few adjectives. I am from Virginia and I graduated from Virginia Tech. Dogfighting is not part of our culture. Throwing family pets into a pit with trained killers because it is fun to watch the helpless animals be ripped apart is not part of our culture. Michael Vick is a pathetic thug from the slums who is a great athlete but would not and never will have what it takes to be a franchise QB in the NFL or even a great man.
But, regardless of that, Michael Vick has served his time and is on work-release which is what happens to most first-time convicted felons. Michael Vick should also not be allowed to return to his former career. If I was convicted of a felony, I would not be allowed to return to my job or my career. I would be looking to get my $10/hour construction job and be working hard to increase my hourly wage by staying clean and working hard. That is the future that Michael Vick as a convicted felon deserves. He will not be allowed to vote, hold public office or hold a job for a private corporation such as the NFL.
That said, all of this is moot. Possibly the racists who call anybody who disagrees with them a hater have not considered the actual facts that Goodell has to deal with. The NFL has a lifetime ban in place for any player, coach or other personnel found to be guilty of gambling or associated with gambling in any form. The last that I knew, the purpose of raising dogs to fight in a pit is so that patrons can wager on the outcome.
So wager that and then head back on over to isupport7.com and bemoan #7’s fate.
Go Falcons.

Great comments Erik and What!!! The thing I’ve come to realize though is that no matter what happens to the Falcons or Matt Ryan – even if they win the Superbowl, there will be a large contingent of fans that will still believe that Vick would have done better. We’re wasting our time trying to argue otherwise……
It will never end. What I cannot understand is how Michael Vick was able to glean this level of support during an NFL career that wasn’t any more successful than Dante Culpepper’s, or Chris Chandler’s, or even Steve McNair’s.
Why wasn’t Warrick Dunn loved as much as Michael Vick? Here was a guy who who could truly call a ‘role model’ and he didn’t get the fanatical adoration that MV7 got.

espn and ajc should give mv7 a cut of their profits during the past 3 years and vick would definitely be able to pay all of his debts off. A major fault of these media outlets is a lack of loyalty they should credit vick for being a hot topics that would allow him them to thrive. apparently he will be noteworthy in 4 years as he has been through this ordeal. That’s more than i can say for peta who should also thank mv7 for their 5 minutes of fame. vick brought their name to attention and everybody all of a sudden cares. i doubt their celebrity endures as we know vicks will

Interesting all the hate for this man. Only thing he did was generate millions of dollars for this city, the team owners and all connected to the games played on Sundays here in Atlanta. But as haters beget hate, that is all what the palefaces pour out on these blogs, all over tv and in any conversation about MV. The haters ignore those who look like them when they caused the invasion of an innocent country killing untold numbers of women and children. Yet cant seem to let it go the fighting of some d__n dogs. The man did his time. What do you palefaces and Massa Gooddell want the man to do. Get done on his knees and kiss your shoes. Many your mindset is stuck in that period before 1865. Or is it your opportunity to show to all that your mind has always been in that time period.

But if I were Goddell, would he return to the NFL? Hell no. I am so sick and tired of all these hoodlum athletes and “celebrities” these days. Playing in the NFL, is a privilege. Vick does not deserve a 2nd chance. It takes one very sick individual to be able to torture and kill defenseless animals. I rather doubt he was cured while in prison. Vick does drugs, he hid hundreds of thousands of dollars before going to prison,he ripped off the Falcons for most of their bonus money, and he illegally took pension fund money. This is the type person who should be a role model in our NFL? Vick is very fortunate to have a job with a construction company. Many decent people are currently unemployed. How many people do you think could be out of work for 2 years, start a new job making $10 pr.hr., and be able to afford a security team, $3million bankruptcy attorney fees and live in a $750,000 home? Vick is fortunate indeed. Let him get on with his life and his new career in the construction industry. Hopefully, Mr. Goodell will give Vick the lifetime ban, he so deserves.

For those of you who think this POS deserves a 2nd chance to be a ‘role model’ take a look at some of the images of dogs he forced to kill each other. Those that survived are so severely deformed they look like monsters. Eyes missing, half their faces gone. I’m all for someone redeeming themselves but this guy is downright evil. What does it take a person to be, deep down, to force animals to attack and kill each other – and to sit back and enjoy it? This guy sends chills down my spine.
At best, if he spent the rest of his life working towards ending animal cruelty, he might make it through those pearly gates. But I really don’t think a person like MV cares about anything but his selfish little world of greed and violence. We don’t need humans like this in our race.

I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE BASHING MIKE VICK. THE REASON THEY ARE DOING IT IS BECAUSE HE IS BLACK AND A VERY GOOD QB. DID BOBBY COX GO TO JAIL WHEN HE BEAT HIS WIFE? YOU HEARD NOTHING ELSE ABOUT IT BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS. WHEN THE JACKSONVILLE PLAYER GOT CAUGHT TRAFFICKING COCAINE, DID THEY LET HIM PLAY AGAIN, YES. WHY IS EVERYONE SO DOWN ON VICK? HE BROUGHT THE OLD TIRED FALCONS UP. GOT THEM TO THE SUPERBOWL, AND THEY BLEW IT. THE QB THEY HAVE NOW IS WHITE, AND THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE WANTED. WE HAVE PEOPLE EVERYDAY THAT ABUSE CHILDREN AND PEOPLE, DO YOU HEAR ABOUT THEM? WHEN IT COMES TO DOGS, AND I HAVE A DOG, PETA ACTS LIKE IT IS THE END OF THE WORLD. THEY ONLY WANTED PUBLICITY. NOW YOU DON’T HEAR A WORD FROM THEM. THEY CAUGHT A MAN IN GWINNETT COUNTY WITH DEAD DOGS THAT HE HAD BEEN FIGHTING IN HIS BACK YARD. DID YOU HEAR ANY MORE ABOUT HIM? A LADY HAD ABUSED HER DOGS AND CATS, GOT CAUGHT, DID YOU HEAR ANY MORE FROM HER? NO BECAUSE THEY WERE WHITE PEOPLE AND THE BLACKS ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY FROM WHITES WHEN THEY COMMITT A CRIME. LEAVE THE MAN ALONE, LET HIM GET ON WITH HIS LIFE AND STOP BASHING HIM BECAUSE I AM SURE ALL OF YOU HATERS HAVE SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSETS TOO. AS FOR HIS PARENTS, WE DON’T KNOW HOW HE WAS BROUGHT UP. Sure, The Michael Vick Case meant = exposure for the local writers and sports writers, and more revenue for the paper, radio, and TV stations.
I think that The former Falcons beat-writer received a better job offer The NFL Network after Vick entered federal prison.
I saw several local sports reporters on ESPN, Fox, etc..
Do some people hate Vick, and waited for a time to “pounce”?
Of course, they did.
Still, he gave them the opportunity…nearly twice.
Still.. Man over Dog. Dogs are being spayed and neutered every day so they cannot reproduce. Wow, that is “loving” and “Fair treatment”. Abandoned dogs are killed (euthanized) in gas chambers regularly.. (Puppies too while 17 year old dogs continue to live in the homes of many)
In my Apartment building, my neighbors’ dogs have to wait all day just to eliminate when their owners return from work. That’s got to kill their dogs kidneys and bladders every day.
Pets = captive animals. It’s called receiving supposed “unconditional love” from a captive animal.
