Vick may not be ready for what awaits him

Michael Vick looked grim when he began his prison sentence in November of 2007, and he may look similar when he gets out. (AP photo.)

Michael Vick looked grim when he began his prison sentence in November of 2007. Given circumstances, he may not look much better when he gets out. (AP photo.)

Sometime in the next few days, Michael Vick will step outside of prison walls and straight into hell.

He will have supporters. That’s fine. The man has paid his debt to society, slept on a cot in Leavenworth for several months and took a bigger hit to his status, his reputation and his income than possibly any athlete in history.

He will have detractors. That’s also fine. Because for as much as Vick has every right to resume his football career, you have every right not to like it. It’s why so many NFL executives are sitting alone in the dark today, weighing that risk-reward thing.

But Vick’s ability to return to football will be based on something far more impactful than the strength of his legs or arm. A New York Times story this week included a common but equally bizarre assumption: “Vick may still be better than half the quarterbacks on NFL rosters.”

If this were all about skill, Vick never would have been in jail to begin with.

This isn’t 2001, when he was embraced by a punch-drunk franchise in a lampooned sports city. This isn’t 2004 when he brought the Falcons to within a victory of the Super Bowl and was given a $130 million contract.

In 2009, Michael Vick is not a hero or a marketing centerpiece. He is an ex-felon and a marketing pariah.

He will be vilified by half the fans in the city he plays in and most fans everywhere else. He will have every move scrutinized by a public and media ready to pounce and mock and an NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, who didn’t like being lied to.

He will be in a locker room where most teammates will say the right thing, something like, “He’s served his time. If he can help us win, I support him.”

But those same players will then step outside and see the picket signs, the news crews, the elephants, the 17 clowns trying stuff themselves into a Volkswagen and maybe that same plane that two years ago circled the field at Falcons’ training camp with a banner reading: “New Team Name: Dog Killers.” And they will think, “I don’t need this. We don’t need this. I wish he was someplace else.”

The success of any pro athlete, particularly an NFL quarterback, is not fast legs or a strong arm. It’s all of those things Vick failed miserably at: leadership, work ethic, resolve, toughness, maturity, teamwork, character.

Michael Vick’s failure as a quarterback had very little to do with his passing accuracy. It had almost everything to do with the intangibles. Vick must come by them in the worst of circumstances. He must come by them when our last memory of him was looking feeble in a season-ending game at Philadelphia, accepting no responsibility for going 2-6 down the stretch and losing 14 of his last 24 starts. He once reacted to the pressure by giving the middle finger to fans at a home game. He all but threw his coach, Jim Mora, and teammates under the bus after that loss to the Eagles. Then he began his off-season with a suspicious water bottle at the Miami airport, was eventually let go by police and rather than breathe a thankful sigh of relief, he suggested maybe somebody was trying to frame him.

Leaders don’t do that. Any of that.

If Vick can return, if he can endure the taunts and grow up and flash any semblance of the magic he once showed us on a football field, this comeback story will top all others.

Unfortunately, the backdrop suggests otherwise. And at least in prison, there has been solitude.

Greedy… Iagree with you MV deserves a chance to redeem his life and be a success. But the great possibility is that success may be far from any NFL football field. I wish him luck but I really believe it won’t be in football. If I were an owner I would not take the tremendous risk of having in my city wearing my colors. Just way to much downside. But that same owner who may own other companies could offer him a job at a livable wage. Who knows how this is going to play out in the real tough world we now live in.

Michael Vick would already be out of jail if he’d been broke and used a public defender. A public defender would’ve had no reason to tell Vick he could get him off. A public defender would’ve seen the mountain of evidence & convinced Vick to plead guilty immediately, shooting for a plea bargaining in exchange for testimony against Phillips, Peace, and Taylor.

High priced defense attorneys saw Vick as another winning lottery ticket, convinced him they’d get him off. With that false bravado, he lied to Blank, lied to Goodell. Vick did bad things to dogs and his attorneys did bad things to him right back.

I haven’t absolutely trusted an attorney since I caught one trying to sneak his name into my will.

Ted Striker – Most insightful! I never thought about the role the lawyers had in whether or not Vick fought the charges, or just plead guilty and take what came of it. The only problem with that argument would be that a public defendant would have seen the same stars in their eyes as a fancy high dollar one, and might have tried the same techniques.

Don’t get me wrong here – I find Vick’s actions (the lying and deceit as much as the dogfighting and racketeering) the evil here that should be punished. As a man, Vick can make choices that bring good to his life and to others as well. I wish him the grace to take the path that he needs to take to be a positive influence and a model citizen.

Before the crimes were revealed, 98% of Falcon fans were certainly proud and excited to have Vick as their QB. Things have changed since. Now we are proud and excited to have Matt Ryan. Good Luck Michael – do the right thing.

Some of you on this blog are really, really hateful and vengeful. Michael Vick deserves another chance JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE! Re the other article about having a brain scan to see if there is real remorse, PLLLEEEEASE! Brain scans cannot detect remorse. That must have been a joke, right? If that were so, we would be able to detect whether a person is a killer or not through scans. MV does not have to play with the Falcons again, okay fine, they ain’t ALL THAT anyway, but allow MV to play football in the NFL. For those who got off on sending their MV’s jerseys to the animal shelter – hopefully it made you feel better, but I still see a lot of “7″ jerseys being worn in the ATL. Michael Vick deserves another CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This comment is for scottbravesfan,

DON’T EVER SAY that Vick makes black people look bad, are YOU CRAZY? One man does not define an entire race!!! Rush Limbaugh and George Bush don’t define whites! Mike Vick made Mike Vick look bad, not his mother, his school, The Falcons, no one else but himself. Nobody had to do the time but him, no one lost endorsements but him. The Falcons lost some money, but hell as much as they SCREW OVER the players in the NFL, they got that back already!! You do not have to forgive him for what he did, and that is on you, I just hope whatever secrets and dirt you hold, someone forgave you for them. But do not get on people with Christian faith, ain’t that what the Bible teaches us, to forgive? Look, actually I do not care about dogs like that, so I do not feel for them, (sorry) but I do not have dogs and I do not think people should fight dogs (and I think he was really stupid for doing it), but I cannot condemn him for it. He apparently had the wrong environment around him, and that is all his fault. Let’s see how he does from this moment on before we label him a ‘THUG’.

Who the heck died and made them king? They have crossed the line with this type of stipulation. Keep up their persecution (assuming MV stays out of trouble) and they will make MV appear sympathetic in the eyes of the general public…

Jeff you created this blog knowing full well how racially divisive it would become. I truly feel sorry for anyone white or black who cannot debate an issue without reverting to uncivilized, uneducated and bigoted exchanges. Some of the thought processes that some of you display here makes it apparent to me that you are not angry at Michael Vick instead you are angry yourselves. Michael Vick, no matter how much he has screwed up, dedicated himself to being a football player and became so good at it that he was paid millions of dollars to do so and even though he has a lot of work to do going forward I have no doubt he will dedicate himself to coming back and once again making millions of dollars. Some of you in here have never dedicated yourselves to anything but a beer can, a cigarette, bigotry or a line of meth and you are jealous of Michael Vick and what he blew. Michael Vick has paid more of a debt for that crime than any of you could ever pay. I am not a Michael Vick fan but I’m not a racist either and while I love dogs, grew up around dogs and own one to this day…I would never want to sacrifice a human in exchange for a dog. Michael Vick has lost more than 99% of you will ever even own in your lifetimes and some of you probably wishes he were hung. Thats sad…but you know what he won’t be hung and he is going to be released and he will as a convicted felon earn more money than most of you will earn in your lifetimes. So get over Michael Vick.

To Jeff Schultz – Thank you for turning the AJC into a place where bigots can have a voice and remind the world of all of the racial tensions this world still has to offer. You are truly a credit to your craft and to me.

What a Country? looking at all of the red states that voted for McCain, I understand why most of the blogs are so negatives. Most knowledgeable fans will not admit that the Falcons defenses, lead by your Keith Brooking’s through the Vick years will discover one of the lowest rated statistical defenses in the league 10 of the losses Vick did his job by scoring enough points to win those games to watch that inferior defense lead by your Keith Brooking lose the game. I can only hope when the Game-tapes become public… Just-tUS will finally be Served…

Najeeh great post man, VS and VS2 keep giving them …, To all those that say Roddy and the rest of the receivers did not get better until MV7 left, maybe they did not get better until the old coaching regime left. The old coaches sucked, watch how Seattle will be the laughing stock of football until they fire Mora Jr. and he take Gregg Knapp with him. Shultz says Vick ‘failure as a QB was due to his lack of intangibles”. You mean to tell me a QB with a winning record, 3 pro bowl appearances and lead his team to the NFC championship game with very little help on his side of the ball lacked intangibles. Look, Shultz if you don’t like MV7 so be it, we all know he will never be a Falcon again, so what, but don’t act as if you never watched a Falcon game while MV7 was the QB. Or maybe the hate in your eyes and heart would not let you see and recognize the truth. You also stated that the next team he plays for half the city will hate him, that is not true, we as Americans are forgiving people. If the man ask for forgiveness and shows that he is sincere, then most will forgive him, only those that want to hate him for other reasons will continue to hold his past deeds against him. The first season MV7 was out of football, White, Black, Hispanic and Asian fans showed support for him, but media types like yourself only showed the hatefull ones. You are deleting the racial comments, well why is the AJC reporting on MV7 if the Falcons are turning the page, the AJC wants to fan that racial fire then play crazy when it burns out of control. If MV7 returns to the NFL he will win many games, Randall Cunningham went 15-1 with the Vikes after being out of football, and Randall was aMV7 before there was an MV7 if you catch my drift. Why would a team trade for a QB when everyone knows that his team his release him. That would be crazy, PAYING FOR SOMETHING WHEN YOU CAN GET IT FREE. PETA does have a lot of influence, but why is it that dogfighting was a misdemeanor befor ethe Vick incident, his felony charges were trumped up to make him snitch and cop a plea. he refused to snitch so the judge socked it to him on those trumped up charges, same way Bill Campbell went to prison on bull. Great story VS2 about those dogs, if the government cared so much about dogs then dogfighting would have been a felony a long time ago. I know you people will never understand and race have nothing to do with this next statement, the things that Vick did to those dogs are apart of the dogfighting culture. It is heinous to you and I because we do not agree with or understand that culture, but there are many people in this country that do. It is humane to kill a dog that lost a dogfight. That dog is seriously injured, they kill the dog to stop the suffering. Many who train and fight their dogs love the dog, it is somewhat like the book Mice and Men. Kill it to stop the suffering.

Published: February 16, 2009

WILKESBORO, NC

A Superior Court judge this morning ordered that 127 pit bulls seized in a raid of a breeder of fighting dogs should be euthanized.

Judge Ed Wilson entered the order after hearing arguments from Wilkes County officials, from the prosecutor and from The Humane Society of the U.S. that the dogs are dangerous and would pose a risk if adopted into homes.

A number of animal lovers and animal advocacy groups have offered to adopt the dogs.

The dogs were seized Dec. 10, 2008, during a raid on Wildside Kennels in Wilkes County.

When Wildside Kennels owner Ed Faron failed to pay the county for the dogs’ care after they were seized, a judge awarded ownership of the dogs to the county.

Faron, 61, pleaded guilty last week of 14 counts of felony dog fighting and was sentenced to 8 to 10 months in prison. His adopted son, Donni Juan Casanova, 18, pleaded guilty to one count of felony dog fighting and was given a suspended sentence of 6 to 8 months.

Amanda Grace Lunsford, 25, the third and final defendant in the case, pleaded guilty this morning to a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals. She is Casanova’s fiancé and had been living at the house less than a month at the time of the raid, her attorney said, and her role was simply to feed and water the dogs.

Lunsford was sentenced to 45 days, which was suspended for 24 months of supervised probation.

I was raised in the Southeast and killing a dog was not thought of being the same as killing a human. You animal rights people need to go under a dark bridge in one of the nations larger communities and find out what real animal abuse really is. VS2 you are off the chain, I told my buddies about you when I was deployed and they questioned me about my what’s my favorite NFL team. You got fans world wide now man. But man it is 50/50 if Vick ever plays again in the NFL. You and VS keep talking about redemption, remember the Tookie Williams story played by Jamie Foxx, Tookie changed but they still executed him. When they portray you as s monster and wanna make an example out of you they usually get their way. Most people, once informed, have a good heart and forgive people but the good hearted people are usually quite and don’t stand up for what is right untill it is too late. We hard working people are too busy making a living, but those spoiled behinds that belong to PETA will do their best to make an example of that man. I think they already have but they won’t rest until they think they have destroyed him. I think the NFL and lame Roger Goodell will cave under pressure. PETA people don’t even watch football, they are too busy planning to throw paint on peoples mink coats to be concerned with Football. Plus, they don’t like the fact that footballs use to be made of animal skins.HAHAHAHAHA. The Falcons are 20 million under the salary cap and coming off a lucky 11 win season, When they stank up the dome this year, they can’t blame MV7 for it. They can’t, it’s all on “MATTY ICE”. That weak armed chump has been exposed, Flacco and Chris Johnson were robbed out of the ROY. LET MV7 go AJC and Shultz stop it with these stories, go on and release him Blank, turn that page but read the same old story when it comes to the FALCONS, they have never had back to back winning seasons and they will not change their fortunes this year with the 4th toughest schedule after gutting your team of the veterans that could have lead you through it. After you turn that page look in the rear view mirror you will see the 2008 lucky season look straight ahead and you see 4-12 for 2009. Next draft you will be saying, “man we need a QB, I wonder if we can get Vick”.

SEASON TICKET HOLDER you are right his first year as starter he went to playoffs. That was 2002. His first year, VS2,was 2001 and the one you think is so smart rode the pine, because he was trying to learn all the plays. Thats what makes Ryan the man. His 1st year out of college he learned the plays, won the starting job, and made it to the playoffs. That was his 1st year . Vick,s first year, sat on the bench.VS2 have a nice day.

@surfdawg….Ryan played his first year because he’s running the same offense that he ran in college. Get it right. The Falcons did EVERYTHING to make it an easy transition for RYAN. surfdawg, the Falcons implemented Ryan’s college offense. He already knew the plays, they were the same plays he had learned for 4 years in college. Plus, dan Reeves sat Vick to get him acclimated to the NFL, Dan Reeves is old school like that. But, lets ee how your boy “Matty Ice” play this year. He faded worse then that Kid n’ Play hairdo in December. They have enough film on that college offense now, so lets see how he plays this year. True leader? Lawyer Malloy was a true leader on that team. He blasted Ryan during the lost to Tampa to get his head back in the game and it worked. You can’t gut a team of talent and vets for 2 straight season and expect good things to happen. That GM is not as good as you all think, he did not build the Pats he was just enjoying the ride. The same way you learned that McKay did not build Tampa it was Dungy. It is funny how when you Falcon fans can’t think of anything related to football you post crap.
