Behold, how to win a playoff game: Zaza Pachulia connects with Miami's Jermaine O'Neal in Game 5. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)
They’re missing two starters. They’re playing on the road. Franchise history blows against them like a typhoon.
As a general rule, this is just this kind of backdrop that’s led the average Hawks fan to take a sledgehammer to their television before tip-off, or at least keep mind-numbing substances somewhere near the remote.
But this time, you might be safe.
“You’ve seen us all year,” Josh Smith said Thursday. “We’ve been fighting through adversity all season. We’re different now.”
Watch tonight. The Hawks have a chance to win a playoff series against Miami. They have a chance despite the fact Al Horford (ankle) and Marvin Williams (wrist) may be in street clothes. They have a chance even though history says they haven’t won a playoff series in 10 years, nor a best-of-seven series in 39.
They have a chance because, like Smith said, they are different now. They didn’t always play great in games four and five. But they won because of a toughness and resolve that at times has been missing. It’s what post-season basketball is about.
They’ve grown up.
They’ve even grown elbows.
“We don’t want that rep that we’re a soft team, that when teams get rough or physical with us that we’re going to run in the other direction,” Smith said. “We’re not built like that, and we don’t believe in going the other way. When the play turned physical in the last game, we returned the favor with hard fouls. We know we have to step it up.”
Loading ...
“There’s more of a been-there, done-that kind of attitude now. They have a mental toughness. They know they have to make the next play, and they don’t look for excuses.”
This transformation clearly blindsided Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. It’s the only explanation for the man popping a spring.
Spoelstra and Dwyane Wade each cast Josh Smith’s failed attempt at a showboating, between-the-legs dribble-and-dunk in the final minutes Wednesday as some assault on the Heat’s manhood.
“Really trying to embarrass us,” Spoelstra said.
“We were very insulted by it,” Wade added.
Oh please. Now the other team needs to grow up.
For somebody to try to embarrass an opponent, they need to be calculating. Josh Smith is anything but calculating. Josh Smith just reacts, sometimes without thinking. That’s the problem. That’s why Mike Woodson’s head hurts.
The real story isn’t that Spoelstra or Wade feel disrespected. The story is that reality has hit them over the head.
The Hawks lost games two and three but they didn’t fizzle. They won in Miami to even the series. They won a physical game back home to push Miami to the ledge.
Suddenly, they’re the team that looks in control, while an opponent scrambles for a motivational tool. Suddenly, it’s safe to watch.

This is the freaking playoffs, teams are supposed to try to embarass each other. There’s a freaking championship on line for goodness sake. Someone please tell Wade and his whining coach that the Hawks are trying to dismantel his team and wipe the floor with them too. I mean, that’s the whole idea of making the playoffs in the first place, right? IT’S DOG EAT DOG!! GO HAWKS!!!!!!!

JSS, way to comprehend subtlety and sarcasm. Do you really think Ledbetter would actually take a public swipe at his colleague?
Jeff, you hit the nail right on the head. The past two games, the Hawks have shown a kind of resolve and toughness that just didn’t materialize enough during the regular season (or during games 2 & 3, for that matter). I’m still concerned, though, because they’ve shown that they’re more than capable of underestimating their opponents and laying an egg in big games. A win in Game 6 will require absolute focus from the opening tip, especially from Josh Smith, who, depending on which version of him shows up, is both our biggest weapon and our biggest liability.
I’m not worried about Marvin’s absence as much as I am about Al not being able to play. Mo Evans has proven that he’s more than capable of holding down the fort while starting in Marvin’s place, and did yeoman’s work on both ends of the court last night. If he steps up again and keeps showing veteran leadership, we’re in good shape. Marvin’s game improved significantly this year, but he’s far from irreplaceable.
Al, on the other hand, is really the heart & soul of our team emotionally, and we need his size down low on O’Neal and Haslem, especially considering the physical nature of the last game. I fully expect more chippiness in Game 6, and a healthy (or nearly healthy) Horford will go a long way to ensuring that the Heat’s big men don’t get us in deep foul trouble early in the game.
Regarding Smith, I don’t know what it’s going to take for him to get the message about his jump shooting. At least three times last night, the entire arena let out a collective groan and forehead slap when he fired up long jumpers, and even though he made one or two, his shot is WAY too unreliable for him to keep chucking up bricks. When he’s on the move and cutting through the lane, there’s nobody in the league that can stop him, but he still seems to think of himself as a 2-guard for some reason. Once Woodson is able to get through to him and convince him to play to his strengths every night and every possession, Smith will be an elite player. I’m not sure if it’s a failure on Woodson’s part or just flat-out immaturity from Smith, but it’s got to be corrected somehow. I tend to believe that it’s more a matter of Smith not listening, because guys like Horford and Marvin have made marked improvements in their time under Woodson. We can only hope that Josh takes note and realizes how unstoppable he could be, because it will make everyone on the team better (especially Joe, who is double-teamed every time down court because teams are more than happy to let Josh sit outside the arc and fire up airballs). When that day comes, the Hawks will be a legitimate 60-win team and an annual championship contender.
Oh, and that between-the-legs attempt last night? Would’ve been absolutely mind-blowing if he had put it down. Spoelstra and Wade know that there was nothing inherently unsportsmanlike about the play, but they were trying to deflect criticism away from the Heat’s poor showing with their whining.

Nothing again Marvin, but Horford is solid consistent force inside that they need. It won’t easy without him. But I was at the end of practice today and I was stunned he didn’t have a huge limp. The ankle didn’t swell up last night nearly as much as they thought.
## Sly: I’m not saying what Josh did was smart. It wasn’t. But you know Josh. He wasn’t doing it to show anybody up. He just doesn’t think about ramifications of his actions sometimes.

I really don’t think anyone with an ounce of a brain would think either team will win the east. But considering a team like the Heat that is loaded with rookies, and only had 15 wins last year, you want to talk about matching up. Dude, next year I’ll bet anything the Heat will easily finish before the Hawks. Plus, give me one player that even has come close to wade’s numbers this year. Since you like stats, Heat Fan (You putz), here are some stats for you. Not sure why you’re comparing cities here, but if we’re talking about crime, here’s Miami at #3 on Forbes’ list of the most dangerous cities.
http://finance.yahoo.com/real-estate/article/106978/America%27s-Most-Dangerous-Cities
Care to guess which city is not in the top 15? That’s right… Atlanta.
How about your point as to that more people visit Miami. Fine, it’s warm and its got beaches. But nobody’s actually going to to live, because its a dump (and clearly a very dangerous one at that). The No. 3 city on Forbes’ fastest growing cities list? You betcha… Atlanta
http://www.forbes.com/2008/01/30/economy-cities-alabama-biz-cx_bw_0130econcities_slide_4.html?thisSpeed=25000
Nowhere to be found on the list? Miami
Now, how about some basketball. For one, I don’t know why you keep bringing up Miami’s youth, as Atlanta’s even younger… we just dont have any rookies. But its indisputable that Portland is the youngest team in the playoffs, and Atlanta’s right behind them… so try again.
And as far as bringing up that we dont have a superstar to match Wade, well, what’s your point? Only two other teams in the NBA have a player better than Wade, which is why he’ll finish 3rd in the MVP voting. But the other two teams finished with the two No. 1 seeds and are the prohibitive favorites to reach the finals. Wade and his boys are about to lose to the lowly Hawks.
Suck on that.

Few things make me post. I usually just read. But wow, “Heat Fan!” you gotta be kidding me. You wanna talk about comparing cities with Atlanta? You must be joking.
The ATL is where its at. More people are moving to Atlanta than old farts that are moving down to Miami. Calling an entire city or fanbase names is pretty ridiculous. And dont even begin to compare your weak ass state with Georgia. Your state is all coast and country. The great State of Georgia has everything….
It is the largest state in landmass East of the Mississippi river. It has A metropolis with 5 milion plus people, amazing mountains in North Georgia, great country charm across the plains, great swampland, beautiful coast with great barrier isles (Golden Isles). We also are on a steady path of growth that will make ATL the 4th-6th biggest city in metro area poulation in the country by 2020 and the State of Georgia the 5th-7th biggest in population in the country by 2020 as well. We have more fortune 500 companies. We have better institutes of higher learning in Emory, and Georgia Tech. We have hosted an Olympic games, we have the worlds busiest airport, we have a thriving music industry and scene. And As somebody who has partied in MIA, and South Beach alot (and its fun), I gotta tell you that I’d take Buckhead, and Downtown Atlanta any day without hesitation. And the other thing Miami is missing is that Southern charm that makes Atlanta that capital city of the South that it is, in “The Empire State of the South” as Georgia is known. The charm of a beer on the patio in beautiful Virginia Highland neighborhood is about as good as it gets.
As far as us booing Dwayne Wade while he was injured, it was because he has been flopping all series, complaining to the refs, and it looked like another flop. And it seemed even more like it when he came back 5 minutes later. Granted after watching the replay he hit his head hard, but that was it seemed like at the time. You want to talk about Mike Vick? He was a quarterback for our football team, and the face of our franchise. He messed up (bad), he is serving his time, and people need to get over it. He will not be a Falcon any more so its not relevant. But dont get it twisted, he was not the face of our city. The face of our city are the native sons of Atlanta, President Woodrow Wilson, President Jimmy Carter, The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, and Maynord Jackson to name a few that you might have heard of. We are he city too busy to hate, we are the ATL, and this is the great State of Georgia, rise up. Zone 3 rise up, Zone 6 rise up, East Atlanta rise up.

It’s sad when people cling to the past instead of the present. We all know the heat won the championship in 2006 (thanks to shaq, and the refs). The problem i have is that you’re not focusing on the mission ahead (game 6) but continue to rant like a 6 year old boy. Josh and Dwyane both went after a loose ball and collided with each other causing Dwyane to hit the back of his head. I’m sure if you homers in miami (that is where you’re from right?) witnessed Al Horford grimacing on the floor in pain some of you would boo as well (We booed wade because of his prima donna act throughout the playoffs nothing else). This is the playoffs (09 NOT 06) you need to get a grip and blame the heat for their lackluster play and not us.

Good one “You Putz”. First off we are debating NBA facts. Not living condition facts. I initially said your image with Mr. Vick and blowing up people during Olympics is really above par for a city. You really put me in my place with Forbes facts. Take a poll out side of georgia. South FL or boring Atlanta. Guarantee the beach will kick your donkey but everytime.
And as far as MVP. MV3 That’s Wade MVP, S. Fla Style. Thanks for pointing out the Heat at least even has some one in the MVP race. Ooops, no one in atlanta. And many NBA experts believe Wade deserves it. You see because your just as stupid as the rest of the morons that don’t understand what MVP means. Let me help you.
MVP most valuable player – NOT best player. Lebron to me is the BEST player in the NBA. But if you take him off the Cavs, they probably finish 6, 7 or 8. Take Kobe off the Lakers, same thing. Now take Wade off the Heat. Probably get 15 wins again. That’s a true MVP!!!!.
What gets not only S. FLA fans, but also the rest of the country (dig around the net and see what everyone else is saying about atlanta’s true disrespect and class-less actions) when like, what the hell did Wade do to you jerks. Nothing to call for cheering loudly when one of the best players to step on the court gets hurt. Guess he was acting.
For your sake, you better hope he is still hurt. Doubt it, but it is your only hope, trust me. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basketball/heat/sfl-dwyane-wade-heat-hawks-s043009,0,7613755.story.

God, You idiot hawks fans complaining about wade being a prima donna. Guess you never see Josh complain. NO of course not. Every single play!!!! And for the record, no one is saying Josh did anything on purpose. You showed your true colors as worthless fans when you cheer when someone goes down. Of course you’ll cheer though, getting all excited because that’s the only real way you’ll have a chance. No excuses how they played over the past two games. Trust me Wade will more than likely play like he did in games 2 & 3 and if so good luck!!!!!
Guess you never saw the greatest player ever to play the game, michael jordan complain to the refs. And you say “Thru out the playoffs”. what a farce. You morons, booed him the first time he touched the ball. Lots of complaining up to that point.
And like the rest of jerks from atlanta, shaq did not win anything for us. did he contribute, hell ya. Could they even remotely do it without Wade, hell NO. Could we have done it with out shaq, maybe, we had alonzo playing like a mad man as well. And if shaq is so wonderful, why didn’t he carry the team the last year when wade was hurt for most of the season. why didn’t the suns even make the playoffs this year with the addition of shaq. know what you’re talking about before opening your stupid trap

I dug, and couldn’t find anything… apparently neither could you, which is why you had to pull something from the Sun-Sentinel (not exactly a national paper). Found one article on Josh Smith… couldn’t find anything on this so-called disrespect that you seem to be crying about.
By the way, I happen to be in South Florida right now, and actually happened to meet two Sun-Sentinel sports writers (though unfortunately not the writer of this story). Wouldn’t you know it, they both agreed that Wade plays up his “injuries” way too much, and that he should quit crying and just play. Your own sports writers think that… and you’re upset that Altanta was booing his fake injury? Gimme a break…
Moreover, they both agreed that instead of crying about Smith’s dunk attempt and being disrespected, the Heat should focus on playing defense and rebounding… you know, things that actually win games. Think about it…

Funny thing is about a minute later that same guy pulled another rebound a fired a pass downcourt for another easy dunk for the Hawks.

By Larry Brown | April 30, 2009 – Posted in Basketball
Things got pretty bumpy in Atlanta Wednesday night. First, Dwyane Wade got caught up in someone’s leg and fell, banging his head against the floor. Later Wade went up for a layup and got fouled by Solomon Jones and a skirmish ensued, resulting in double-technicals. On the next play, Wade fouled Maurice Evans on a fastbreak and got hit with a flagrant one foul. As if that wasn’t enough, later in the second quarter, Al Horford came down after a hard foul and twisted his ankle. All three moments are encapsulated in an incredible way by Hawks radio announcer, Steve Holman, on the Hawks flagship station, 790 the Zone. The dude literally goes berserk on-air, bashing the “untouchable” Dwyane Wade in the process. Believe me, it’s hilarious.
Some of the classic lines:
“You can’t foul me when I go to the basket, I’m Dwyane Wade. I do commercials.”
“Look, I’m Dwyane Wade, you can’t call that!”
“Oh my goodness, the Heat have resorted to thuggery!”
I do believe that the term “homer” would be appropriate here. Even if Wade gets preferable treatment from the refs, the foul on Mo Evans wasn’t anywhere near as bad as Holman describes it. He wasn’t trying to hurt Evans, and yes, Wade was going for the ball. You can see a few of the highlights here to judge for yourself.

Heat fan is a bitc7 and i bet he doesnt show his sorry a$$ on this blog after the hawks run the wades outta the building yet again!! i cant believe some people are ignorant after there team just got killed in back to back games. If you even look at stats then you will realize the hawks are dominating in almost every category. Play some defense, get a rebound, and play physical basketball. I have never in my life seen a team (the wades) fold faster then the other night. I have seen middle school girls play more physical then the heat excuse me the wades play last night. At least we a have a team where all of our starters are averaging 10 points a game and not just a one man show. Also, the hawks are missing a important starter (marvin) and joe johnson has been playing poor basketball and the wades are still getting crushed. THE WADES HAVE NO ANSWER FOR ZAZA! i mean come on dude even a heat fan can clearly see the hawks are a better team. I sick of this guy talking about sh!t from three years ago or next year! quite living in the past and future! focus on the teams from this year and the hawks are better! Heat fan even said “without wade the heat would only win 15 games” thats not saying much for your TEAM!! But the only thing that matters is 3-2!!! GO HAWKS!!!!!

Miami is the biggest bunch of crybabies I’ve ever seen in the NBA. From Wade to the head coach. Give me a break. Oh waaah, he disrespected us because he tried a highlight dunk at the end of the game. Get over it. If Dwayne Wade did that, ESPN would have been touting it as one of the greatest dunks ever. There is such a ridiculous double standard in this stupid league.
Wade cries to the refs after almost every single play. Solomon Jones fouls him but not hard, and then tries to hold Wade up and Wade gets up in his face. He acts like everyone owes him something. I’ve lost all respect for that guy. They were throwing cheap shots all game long and then cry when we got physical.
I hope we beat them by 30 tonight and beat Wade down like the %^$&* he is.

I am from Miami and tell be honest I am not really upset about Smith’s failed dunk. I watch Hawks games and Smith would do that even when they are down 20. I am sure even the most passionate Hawks fan will admit Smith is a knucklehead. I am more upset that outside of Wade and JO no one played with any passion and the defense was more akin to Phoenix Suns. Hopefully the role players show up tonight. I am not ready to go fishing yet.

If the Miami Heat need a Josh Smith moment to fire them up for an elimination game, then they have more problems that they actually realize.
Josh is Josh. You deal with what comes with him. Fact is that even with all of the things that he does that make your head explode, Atlanta is not as good a team without him. When he is at his best, Atlanta is a tough out for any team in the league, including Cleveland, LA, Denver.

Hawks – 3 Heat -2. Heat got out rebounded, out scored in the paint, and when they tried to get physical it was the Hawks who muscled them down like punks. You got beat down out there, and it was blatantly obvious. I can understand why the Heat fans are upset. D-Whine isn’t getting B.S. foul calls during the playoffs and he’s crying like he needs a diaper change. What was it last game? Back spasms… that’s right. And now it’s a head bump on a hard fall, granted, which he then returned from to drop like what, 25 or so… but still it’s being used as another in a long line of excuses that seem to be piling up for why the Heat will loose this series. When the Hawks lost to the Heat, the Hawks responded with statements like, “Sharing the ball more” and “play better defense”, the Heat respond with excuses. You don’t hear any whining coming from the Hawks bench about 2 starters out and things ‘getting too physical.’ The Hawks are acting like winners. What are the Heat acting like? Yup, you guessed it…

Morning my feathered friends… What a blast last night was. Don’t have time to waste here all day but thought I’d respond to a few of my news fans:
“hawks in 6″: NO CLASS is when a fan base has no idea how to react to a game. Great to have your opinions about Wade crying all the time, etc. But your city has showed what it is really made of when you cheer the loudest when a player goes down. That’s class. And as far as my banter here, just in fun but also called “sarcasm”. guess you didn’t get it- no surprise here… By the way if you are a real NBA fan, you would’ve seen a few reports about how you’re acting on NBA Today, TNT, ESPN. CLASS BABY REAL CLASS…..
“wade is b1tch”: Hard to even respond to you. Anyone who is a Wade fan (which by the way I guarantee you Wade by himself has a 100x larger fan base than the whole joke of a city like craplanta) knows the character he exudes, what he’s made of and the mega amount of talent he has. It’s known for fact BTW, superstars have always worked the refs, even though I still don’t remotely agree he cries and whines as much as you buttholes think. Ever hear of guy named jordan? go back and watch some film of the greatest player and see how often he was in the ear of the refs…
“kevin”: Be guest my guest to post on CAVS blogs if that city as a whole disrespects your beloved hawks. And be sure to boo Lebron everytime he touches the ball. OOOPS – aren’t we ahead of ourselves kevin, don’t you still need to win to even get there. Typical bird fan, counting your eggs before they’re hatched….
“GOHAWKS”: WHAT? That’s all you get. BTW – You’re only up 1 game in a 7 game series. You’ve lost on your court and we’ve lost on ours. It aint over yet you freak!!!!
“Robert”: You’re funny. Got killed back to back? Short memory? Games 2 & 3? Your 2 “superstars” are not playing up to their potential? If you think you’re really seeing Wade at his best, you truly don’t follow the NBA. No excuses for how poorly he played in 1, but if you think you guys handled him in games 4 & 5, good luck tonight if he’s able to play 100%… Leading scorer, one of the top defenders in the league and you think he’s playing 100%… go watch some more girl’s middle school games, fool!!!
“georgiasouthern hawk “: Watch talking about having “experience” from last year. A few quirky people here hate hearing about the past
“jdmesp”: Your kidding right (oops, did it again)
“HEAT FOR LIFE!”: YOU DA MAN – SEE YOU BACK HERE TONIGHT!!!!!
Hope I didn’t leave anyone out. Let’s Go Heat…
