Lions fans start early, boo Stafford BEFORE the pick

Hey, Boss. Can Stafford lead Detroit to the Promised Land? (Photo courtesy of Southern Tracks.)

Hey, Bruce: Can Stafford lead the Lions to the Promised Land?

First, my apologies. I did not file a Countdown last week. I was still recuperating from the Masters, when one of Angel Cabrera’s playoff shots bounced off two trees, a moose, a rooftop, a drain pipe, two Democrats (how did they get through the gates?) and then off the side of my head just before rolling into the hole, just as Bobby Jones envisioned.

Sometimes things don’t go as expected. Like NFL drafts. Early picks for splat. Late picks turn into Pro Bowlers. And whatever the Detroit Lions do usually ends up a punchline.

Which leads me to Matthew Stafford. Did you know Lions fans apparently don’t want him?

I dunno. Maybe they saw the Florida game.

Details follow. But first, a disclaimer: This Countdown is a tribute to Bruce Springsteen, who plays Philips Arena on Sunday. I’ve seen him countless times over the last 28 years. Really. I don’t count. Somehow, it makes me seem less obsessive.

Did I tell you I own three of his broken guitar strings?

10. Brilliant Disguise

Can Matthew Stafford throwing to Calvin Johnson be bad? (Brant Sanderlin / bsanderlin@ajc.com)

Can Matthew Stafford throwing to Calvin Johnson be bad? (Brant Sanderlin / bsanderlin@ajc.com)

It’s NFL draft week. So, as always, assume everything you hear is a lie. As Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said Tuesday: “I think the overriding theme in most draft rooms is how important being clandestine is. You just never want to play your hand.”

So in that sense, it’s not surprising the Detroit Lions have not yet made a public declaration about Matthew Stafford. But why suddenly all the hate? Lions fans at a function Monday chanted, “Don’t draft Stafford! Don’t draft Stafford!”

Read on.

9. Your Own Worst Enemy

I’d be miserable if I was a Lions fan. For starters, that would mean living in Detroit. The Lions have had eight straight losing seasons. They were 0-16 last year. They’ve had so many draft blunders — Joey Harrington, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Terry Fair, Drew Stanton — you’d think Pete Babcock was hiding in their war room. So it probably wasn’t surprising Monday when the Lions unveiled their new logo and uniforms that their fans chanted, “Curry, Curry,” as in Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry. According to Detroit Free Press writer Nicholas Cotsonika, team president Tom Lewand tried to crack a joke: “I’m going to pretend that sounded like Barry,” as in Barry Sanders. The anti-Stafford chants followed.

8. Working On A Dream

This was Joey Harrington when people expected a lot, unlike when he was a Falcons. (Curtis Compton / ccompton@AJC.com)

This sums Joey Harrington as a first-round pick. (Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com)

Look, I understand the trepidation when it comes to drafting Stafford No. 1. He failed to come up in some big games. But I have a hard time seeing how Matthew Stafford throwing to Calvin Johnson doesn’t translate to success – even if it does make Georgia and Georgia Tech fans a bit queasy.

7. Living In The Future

Overall, here’s the “duh” of the Falcons’ weekend: They’ll draft for defense. Dimitroff’s decision to part with Lawyer Milloy and Keith Brooking sent the message that the team needs to get younger and faster. (Milloy, by the way, has yet to be signed by another team, and he showed up as a “guest secondary coach” at the University of Washington’s spring game.) But mock drafts are all over the board. The most prevalent names of late have been Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis or Southern Cal linebacker Clay Matthews. But of NFL.com’s four experts, including former AJC staffer Steve Wyche, three have the Falcon taking Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew (the other: Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins. If your Dimitroff, you love the confusion. Dimitroff: “Some [mocks] are close. Some throw out players in the mix.” But we’re most interested in what we feel as a team.” Well. That didn’t give away too much.

6. (They’re) Going Down

After the Braves started the season 5-1, I’m sure I heard somebody on the radio talk about the playoffs, and winning the division, and possibly overthrowing Lichtenstein. But they’re 1-6 since, they just lost to the 1-10 Nationals, the remains of reliever Blaine Boyer were traded to St. Louis and catcher Brian McCann has blurred vision, which I’m pretty sure is a significant problem when part of your job description is catching every pitch. Wow. And it’s only April. Might want to grab some Dramamine before May. UPDATE: McCann is heeeeeeealed! A link to Carroll Rogers’ story.

5. Radio Nowhere

The NHL playoffs are underway. Somewhere else. (Oh look! Transition!)

4. The Price You Pay

Don Waddell once was a promising prospect, as well as a promising GM. But 10 years later...

Don Waddell once was a promising prospect. Also a promising GM. But 10 years later...

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell says he fully expects to be back with all of his powers intact. Silence from ownership seemingly confirms as much. OK, look. The team made a nice little run late in the season with some young players. But they still finished with the fourth-worst record in the NHL. They allowed the second-most goals. (Oh wait. That was an improvement. Never mind.) They’ve missed the playoffs in eight out of nine seasons. There’s a word that seems to have escaped some people: accountability. The franchise has a significant marketing problem. Results and marketing problems usually mandate change. But I guess that’s only when somebody cares.

3. She’s (Not) The One

Mentioned a while back I was going going to follow some celebrities on Twitter. Added Kim Kardashian, underground video star and I think still the girlfriend of Reggie Bush, just to see how many brain cells I could burn. She hasn’t disappointed. She has 408,888 followers, only slightly ahead of me. Among the recent “Twits,” are: “PLEASE HELP ME! I am so sunburned! I fell asleep with huge glasses on yesterday! This tan line is not ok!!!” And: “I’m in love with Britney Spears!!!” (hey, now!).

Just another day in the life of Kim Kardashian (via Twitter).

Just another day in the life of Kim Kardashian (via Twitter).

And then there’s this picture, which she too of herself on a recent typical Kim Kardashian day. Wonder if Reggie Bush has introduced her to a “Thighmaster.”

2. Waitin’ On A Sunny Day (and TV)

The first three games of the Hawks-Miami series are stretched ridiculously over seven days, as the NBA bows to the demands of television executives and their desires for the most weekend games possible. But if you’re counting dollars for the Hawks, you’re not complaining. The three days between Games 1 (Sunday) and 2 (Wednesday) means more time to sell tickets, which isn’t easy in a down economy. The Hawks have a hot product but a low season-ticket base. Coach Mike Woodson and players would love a sweep. But the accounting department wouldn’t mind a seven-game series and four home games.

1. No Surrender

Turner attorney Jim Lamberth called a jury’s recent award of $281 million to once potential Hawks and Thrashers owner David McDavid “drastically wrong” and “grossly excessive.” Just one question: If Turner attorneys didn’t spend so much time thumbing through a thesaurus to craft an argument, would they have done a better job in the original court case over the franchise sale? And speaking of “grossly excessive,” what do their billable hours amount to?

Jeff Schultz can be reached via email (jschultz@ajc.com), Facebook, Tweeter (SchultzAJC) or carrier pigeon (make a right off 400).

lol, I am not selling GT QBs to the NFL. You Dawgs tried to sell Greene, Zier, Carter, and now Stafford. I didn’t say Stafford can’t play the position. I said he is not a #1 pick & price tag. P.S the kid from West Virgina (White) has a better winning record too. Hell, Reegie Ball made plenty of those “Oh, my God please let Calvin catch it to win the game passes as did Fat Matt last year against UK and what game was the other one? Enter 1 of 3 choices. Matt is not worth the money at a #1 Pick, But he is a good QB. Sell the pick and buy more with your money. I don’t think NO SHOW can carry the load game in game out too. T. Choice showed Dallas that he is a Work Horse after getting the chance. He was a late round pick and worked when he got in the game. No Show thinks he is the Sh*t and has the attitude to be a great back, but tooo much ego thanks to you DAWG fans pumping him with your red & black crap.

Now, that’s a nice photo! It’s the kind of photo that almost makes me forget that Jacques Lemaire, Doug Risebrough, Guy Carbonneau, and very shortly now, Bob Gainey, will all be available for work as Head Coaches or General Managers, with umpteen Stanley Cup rings between them. And yet, the Atlanta Spirit, LLC, will stick with Waddell.

What’s left to say? I just root for him to succeed. There are no other options. And if Waddell gets the team deep into the playoffs, then who can argue? But if he doesn’t, and doesn’t load the team for bear with this favorable drafting position, then our organization really missed out on some proven-results type people that it could have otherwise brought in to mold and shape the Thrashers for a good 4-6 year window.

Fans are stupid. I know, I am one. Lots of Falcons fans last year, were all, “You build with the lines.” Then, when Matt Ryan led our favorite team to the playoffs last year, it was all like “man, thank God, Dimitroff didn’t draft Dorsey.”

Everyone thought Chris Redman … excuse me while I laugh hysterically … OK, I’m back … would be just fine until Andre Woodson … dang, excuse me while I laugh again … developed into the next Tom Brady.

All this is to say, Detroit fans surely know more than Matt Millen, but like us Falcons fans, we don’t really know Scooby Snacks from Shinola. I don’t think Stafford will be another Joey Harrington.

Just curious Jeff — was that picture of Bruce taken about 5-6 yrs ago? I used to own a car wash and Southern Tracks was one of my VIP clients. I was at their studio when Bruce was recording his album there. Not sure exactly but It was sometime in 2003-2004 i think.

Got to meet him and he was super nice. I’ve never been a big fan but he definitely made me
one with his personality and generosity. My employees were talking about it for months afterwards. Great guy. Didn’t have a camera but remember that day well..

Barkin: Does “Brice” “Springstein” sing, too? Never heard of him.

Geoff: By this time of draft weeks, you tend to hear more negatives than positives about kids. It’s paralysis by analysis.

Ole Ball Coach: Good comparison. Not saying Stafford will be as good as Ryan, but QBs scare people in the draft because there have been so many high-profile flops, probably.

Lion Fan: Chuck Long. Wow, hadn’t heard that name for a while.

TT: Is the view of 0-16 better from Seattle? Probably. … What does that 30 percent figure come from?

AngryBanker: I actually hadn’t noticed . . . oh yeah. … Where was I?

SimpleDawg: You had me until the third paragraph. I unplug my nose in your general direction. (Say with a French accent: sounds better.)

MEZ: And we could really show you a skyline. Or a restaurant. Or a tree.

Chiefs fan: No.

NRBQ: I have, brother. I have.

Ramblin: Glad your so certain. I’m not. Pettigrew seems to be the hot rumor right now. But like I’ve said, hot rumors don’t mean anything.

Brendan: For what it’s worth, Jacques Lemaire was available in 1999 when Waddell hired his first coach (Curt Fraser). Minnesota hadn’t hired him yet.

Gunny: Huh?

Capt. Caveman: The photo was in the AJC archive, provided by Southern Tracks. I think it’s from when he did “The Rising” so that would be 2002. He’s done his last 3 albums there: Rising, Magic (2007) and Working on a Dream (2009). Not sure “Devils and Dust” (2005) and the Seeger Sessions (2006), since that’s not my type of music, anyway. … Nice story.

Could it be? Is Detroit that place in the world that does not revolve around the Georgia Bulldogs? Do they not bow down to idols of Vince Dooley there? Has some evil influence made them unable to see the newest Savior (Matty Stafford) walk on Red and Black water? Maybe they are just blinded by the baldness of Jeff Schultz’ head, and disgusted by his manlove for a male music celebrity?

jeff,

I was in Detroit in a nice downtown hotel for 2 weeks for training with an employer many years ago. Worst 2 weeks of my life. Couldn’t get one decent nights sleep with all the freaking police sirens going off every single night. What a freaking cesspool.

I don’t have anything positive to say about most of the people of Detroit that I met either.

I’m not a dawg fan obviously but I think Matt Stafford deserves better than to be hitched to that pathetic, losing, laughingstock franchise. The guy has a freaking cannon of an arm, he’s mobile, he scored an eye popping 38 on the wonderlic. What more could you want out of a qb? And they want a linebacker instead? Good linebackers are a dime a dozen compared to good qbs. These sorry arse Detroit Lion fans don’t deserve a talent like Stafford. Hopefully Stafford will get skipped by Detroit and go to anybody but this horrible franchise.

Jeff, I hadn’t realized that Lemaire was available in 1999. I guess I thought he was still with the Devils. But even if he were available, (I’m not questioning it,) Waddell decided to embark upon his now infamous “5 year plan,” which I’m sad to say we are in Phase II, the “next 5 years.” I have my doubts that Lemaire would just fall on the sword for 4 years while the team loaded up via the lottery draft. 1st overall in 1999 & 2001. Second overall picks in 2000 & 2002. Lemaire strikes me as the sort who would say, “Don, I expect us to be competing for a playoff spot by 2001 and in the playoffs by 2002.”

Well, shrugging. I don’t think that was Don’s plan. I think Don wanted to use the advantage of a high draft pick in each and every round to try to stock the shelves. Trouble was, his early draft picks bore fruit in the ECHL and AHL, not the NHL. Colin Stuart seems like a late bloomer from that crowd. But the 1999-2003 drafting wasn’t a lot to write home about. Even Braydon Coburn wasn’t developed here, in Atlanta, by Bob Hartley. He blossomed in Philly, under Holmgren.

I think Waddell saw Curt Fraser and thought, “I can get a buddy an NHL paycheck while we lose.” I don’t think ANYONE really expected the Thrashers to … be in the Stanley Cup Finals within 3 years. Only the very biggest optimists among us would think that. So, Fraser knew what his job would be. To buy “time” for the franchise to load up. I’m sure Fraser thought that things might go better than they did, in his defense.

And truthfully, I didn’t question that strategy. In the beginning, I thought Don Waddell had great ideas. Here, he was coming out of Detroit, which had just won a Cup. And he didn’t want to try to replicate the 1993-1996 Florida Panthers plan of “get real good, real quick.” So, I was happy with the direction of the early years. I’d say … my opinion changed at the 2002 Draft, when Waddell went with Lehtonen over either Bouwmeester or Rick Nash at #2 overall. There was a plethora of netminders available on the free agent market in 2002, 2003, and even 2004, when it became time to have a proven netminder between the pipes. I just didn’t see why the franchise needed to invest 5-years in a pedigree goalie when it could continue to either build the blueline or the top 6 forwards. But that’s just meeee. I have zero playoff wins to my credit. Sadly, that’s the same number Waddell has. And yet, I would think I’d be fired as GM, if I had the same results.

If you really stop to think about it, what must other hockey fans in other markets think … when they still see Waddell here? Guys like Nonis, LaCroix, Risebrough were all fired for FAR LESS failure. And soon, Bob Gainey could be unemployed. It’s about accountability. I don’t Kovalchuk can call for Waddell’s head. For all I know, Kovy LIKES ‘IM??? But if he doesn’t, wants a change made at the GM position, I would hope that the topic might arise in private meetings between Kovy, his agent, and the ownership.

Jeff – the 30% success rate number comes from a local Detroit sports radio show. They assessed the number of QBs taken in the first round *who did not play 4 years in college* and concluded that only 30% have been successful. I’m not saying the analysis is right or wrong, but that’s where the number comes from.

The Lions have no O-line, D-line, linebackers, or secondary – THAT’s why no one in Detroit wants Stafford. QB is not their biggest need. Stafford to Johnson will never become a great combination because Stafford will spend his entire career on the turf if he comes to Detroit.

Lions fans want to spend 30 Mil on an LB @ #1 slot, another load on the #20 pick and then turn around and try to get a top QB next year in the draft and spend another 30 Mil. The biggest suprise would be if somebody traded up to the #1 pick Saturday but I just don’t see that happening. The old “get a free agent QB in here” argument doesn’t float. Jeff Garcia, John Kitna, Duante Culpepper have all been tried. The D is stuck with the #1 and it better be a QB. Sanchez or Stafford.

When you go 0-16, you really need to fix your team. Stafford is a GOOD QB, but this team needs a veteran at QB, and Curry, or a solid DT like Radji would be a better fit. Stafford would have so much to learn, and the Lions didn’t do enough in the off season to put the right pieces around him. He would come in and have to learn a system to fast, and woulnn’t be effective.Unlike the Falcons last year ,who brought M.Turner to team with Norwood and make teams respect the running game. Detroit fans, like eight years of Bush, ya’ll had alot of years of MM. Your team, like the nation, is in a recession, and this is going to take two solid drafts to clean this up.
