Before we get started in this week’s Countdown, this just in: You guys are a bunch of degenerates.
I received quite a bit of feedback following last week’s debut of the new blog format. Most of it was positive. Some of you don’t like my glasses. Some of you also blame my glasses, my hairline, the new blog format and global warming for Michael Vick being in jail, which I’m still trying to figure out.
But overwhelmingly, the comments in email, online reader postings and grocery store/canned food aisle shout-outs generally included two words: Lindsay Lohan. My half-joke about using pictures of bikini’d vixens as a tool for cheap page views brought readers together like nothing since that Tuesday when the garbage truck picked up the recyclables and Bobby Petrino.
So here’s the deal. As long as it doesn’t get me fired, I will TRY to provide you, the lowest-common denominator, with a picture of a female who has some direct link to sports and probably has a lot of wonderful qualities to offer this world, none of which you likely will care about or will be evident in the picture.
If I do this correctly, and carefully, and when my editor is at a very, very long lunch that includes several martinis (or these days, Boone’s Farm), I should be able to keep my job for at least another week.

Please welcome The Count, the new executive producer of The Countdown, and his long lost twin Muppet, Steve Belkin (right).
And now, with the assistance of my new executive producer, The Count (and his long lost twin from the Atlanta Spirit Group), here is this week’s Countdown (The Count. Get it? Countdown. Never mind):
Josh Smith. Oy. I touched on this wonderful athlete/maroon (copyright: Bugs Bunny) in a column Sunday. Either he doesn’t realize how good he is, or he knows how good he is and he figures the rest will simply take care of itself. Either way, he’s regressing.
Did you catch Smith’s act Monday night in Utah? He finished the game with 11 points (0-for-6 from the free-throw line), five rebounds and five fouls, before being ejected for a flagrant foul on Matt Harpring. In the last six games, Smith has averaged 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds. Now, I realize not every NBA forward is capable of averaging 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds. But I think only one of them recently signed a $58 million contract. I’m not saying it’s time for the Hawks to give up on Smith. But this is year five. We’re way past the oh-he’ll-come-around-eventually stage. Somebody needs to take a blowtorch to his butt, and quick.
The Atlanta Spirit trial is in its second week in Maryland. Should this glorified spitting contest stretch into a third week, ownership has reached an agreement with the Cartoon Network to pick up the broadcast, just following the Thrashers’ game. Also, next week, they get to hit each other on the head with those big caveman clubs.
Back to the Hawks: They trailed by 14 points at halftime, 22 in the third and would’ve lost by more than 19 (108-89) if not for the Jazz falling into uncontrollable laughter and hyperventilating on the court (which I believe is allowed in Salt Lake City only before 9:30, when the bars close). Question: Why did Mike Woodson put Joe Johnson back into the game with the score 93-70 in the fourth quarter? Has Johnson not quite looked worn out enough recently?

Lawyer Milloy is taking his ball and going home. But the Falcons never should have allowed that.
Thomas Dimitroff has something few general managers are afforded: the benefit of the doubt. But I’m just not feeling this decision on Lawyer Milloy. He clearly was beat up and beat down by the end of last season. And no, he can’t move like he used to. But the Falcons are going to miss Milloy’s leadership. Yes, he could be a difficult guy to deal with in the building, and he wasn’t happy about his contract. But he never let that affect him on the field. Every player on that defense, particularly in the young secondary, looked up to him. The Falcons’ defense is woefully short of veteran leadership. The team should’ve found a way to keep him around.
So I’m thinking: “LPGA. Oh yeah. I can get into that.” (Hang with me, doofus. This is what you wanted.) Aussie golfer Anna Rawson be smokin’. (You can find better pictures on that web thing, particular with high heels and, uh, where was I … ?) Did you see what Rawson said the other day on Australian radio? “The tour has got so much better with so many young stars and great players. But the mentality, unfortunately, amongst the media and the industry hasn’t changed. They still think we’re at 25 years ago, you know, when the tour was full of, you know, a lot of dykes and unattractive females that nobody wanted to watch. It’s totally changed but they still won’t give us TV time.” Take comfort, Anna. The Countdown is your gateway to the big time.
Garret Anderson will put up better numbers than Ken Griffey Jr. would have and there is far less of a chance that he’ll spend several weeks on the disabled list. Now ask me which guy the Braves’ marketing department would have preferred, because something tells me Ken Griffey Jr. Hall of Fame Bobblehead Night is so dead.
Speaking of the Braves’ marketing department: What a bunch of weasels. OK, smart. But weasels. Individual game tickets for 75 out of 81 home games go on sale Thursday. The other six? Not so fast. Tickets to games against the New York Yankees (June 23-25) or Boston Red Sox (June 26-28) can only be purchased in multi-game packs (for now). Example: If you want a pair of tickets for a Yankees game, you must buy tickets to three other games – say, like, a Tuesday night against the Nats. But as a bonus, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll also be able to pitch that night.
Really, it’s OK to be fat, lazy and stupid as an NFL draft pick. But the trick is to not let anybody know about it right away. Even past Falcon flops like Aundray Bruce were smart enough not to act the part until AFTER they were drafted and signed a contract.
But Alabama tackle Andre Smith might’ve blown as much as $24 million by: 1) getting suspended from the Sugar Bowl for retaining an agent; 2) eating the state’s supply of Ding Dongs; 3) not working out; 4) pronouncing at the NFL Scouting Combine that he would not run drills; 5) changing his mind about running drills, only to leave Saturday without telling anybody. He has gone from a potential early first-round selection to a possible second-round selection, or maybe Burger King. Young kids make dumb mistakes all the time. But to make so many so early in such a short amount of time with so much on the line is not great foreshadowing. And by the way — what has his agent done other than get him suspended from the Sugar Bowl?
So I’m still following selected celebs and lesser beings. Think I told you. I dropped Brooke Burke. Never has somebody so hot been so boring. (”Thinking about taking a yoga class today. I need it! 11:38 AM Feb 21st from web.” Ugh.) Twitter of the Week comes from Rainn Wilson (“Dwight” from “The Office.”) “There is nothing funny about ADD, now called ADHD. It affects over- Hey look! A weird moth!!!!”
(LATE UPDATE: Also following “The Real Shaq,” and yes, it’s the real Shaq. He just sent this out: “I’m at the fashion sq mall, any1 touches me gets 2 tickets, tag me and say yur twit u hv 20 min.” Can you imagine the pileup in the parking lot?”)
(Yes. I am a Twit. Reach out and Tweat me at SchultzAJC. If you’re funny or obnoxious enough, I might make you a star, like Anna. But I make no promises about your legs.)

The Hawks arent trying to get any better obviously… The Lakers let Chris Mihm a 7footer go for a future draft pick….. The Kings cut Mikki Moore a 7footer and the Celtics just picked him up… On a team that cant get a rebound and has absoulutely no LOW POST idenity at all i wonder what the hell is going on.
I am the biggest Josh Smith basher in this town but dont start with the thug talk he hasnt been in any trouble with the law!!!! And that foul of MATT HARPRING of all people was nothing more than great acting!!!!! I watch the Bad boys for years that was nothing!!!!!
The bigger problem with the hawks is MIKE (the dictator) Woodson the official Gregg Knapp of the NBA… The hawks offensive game plan is horrible…. WE are the only team in the NBA that runs plays to get the ball too guys 30ft from the basket!!!!!! We dont take advantage of match ups in the post at all!!!!!! Believe it or not Marvin Williams should get the ball in the post because he is the only player who goes hard enough to the basket to get fouled!!!! I like Joe but i am sick and tired of watching him go thru his Harlem Globetrotter dribbling routine for 22 of the 24 second clock just to shoot a 20 foot fadaway jumper!!!!!
And last but not least if Josh Smith is stealing money Kieth (i havent made a play in 8 years) Brooking must be Jessie James!!!! And just to think we made the super bowl with him his rookie year,, WHAT IF WE HAD DRAFTED HALL OF FAME WR RANDY MOSS THAT YEAR…….

Sund is biding his time. Woodson? Josh? Both? None? Ask me after the season. Ask me after ATL and the Count finish throwing cereal at each other.
Hate to see Milloy go, but there’s safety talent in the draft and a prudent veteran signing wouldn’t hurt. I gotta give Dimitroff/Smith the benefit of the doubt. For now.

Way to suck up, Craig.
I don’t see who or what is going to give Josh Smith a wakeup call. Woodson won’t. Josh seems to be too arrogant about his abilities.

Josh Smith and the whole Hawks team will play up to their potential under a NEW HEAD COACH!!! It sucks the big wigs are letting Woodson stay this season and screw it up even more when if this was any other NBA franchise he would have been shown the door at All Star break. Our guys are not losers! Our coach is!

As the hot young star, Smith has a certain responsibility. He is far and away the most marketable thing the Hawks have. The NBA has even done a little marketing with him which is really saying something as the only 2.5 players in the entire league are Kobe, Lebron, and the .5 is whatever drama surrounds Starbury.
Free throws are a fundamental thing. Not to mention they’re FREE throws. CHARITY shots. They are the only shots that you can practice by yourself as the distance and guarding are the same every single time.
As Baltimore Bullet alludes, his defensive theory is awful. Instead of guarding his man straight up, he wants to be on SportsCenter. Let’s see him block that shot into the first row and spill somebody’s $8 popcorn! If Bill Russell had allowed you to get that shot off, he would block it all right. Tip to himself or a teammate. Because he was a team player.
Smith isn’t a team player. Well, unless it’s a one man team called Josh Smith.
To continue on to Mike Woodson, can him, too. He never seems to have any passion on the bench. His not being proactive and constant playing of Solomon Jones just proves that the goals and priorities are a little out of whack.

Jeff,
Josh Smith does indeed have issues, and his last five games have indeed been horrible. Okay, so you say “it’s year 5.” Somehow, in your little story, you forget the 23 games that preceeded the last five, in which he averaged 18.2 points and 8.4 rebounds. Hmmm, where was the article on THAT, I wonder?
Yes, yes, I know. It’s not so popular to write how well a guy is doing when you’ve been calling him the most talented dummy in the game (you haven’t….have you?).
And here’s another take: if it were Joe Johnson with a streak of five subpar games, would you criticize him with the same fervor? Doubt it. How about Mike Bibby? Nope. And what did the point guard savior give us last night against Utah? It’s funny, when those guys don’t perform, ” they’re just tired” (despite the fact that Bibby should never be tired, he doesn’t play defense), and Joe takes possessions off on defense all the time. But then again, why wouldn’t he? He’s doing the job Bibby is supposed to be doing….
Ah well, some things never change. Josh still has issues at “year 5″ and people are still willing to paint him as the kind of player that destroys teams and locker rooms. Gee, you’d think we lived in Portland (5-7 years ago), New York, Detroit (’Sheed…says it all), or Indiana (Artest era).

Hello. Josh Smith and Al Hoford are legitimate scorers in this league. The are not the featured offensive players in our half-court sets. Both command a double team in the post the few times they get a look. Watch the tape or the next upcoming games and you’ll see. That tells me that the league knows their potential. Does our coach? Our offensive sets are to perimeter oriented. Too much dribble, dribble, dribble by our guards. Feed the post and good things will happen. I see him and Hoford establish inside position only to be shunned for a Bibby outside jumper or a Joe Johnson iso. Josh is frustrated and rightfully so. We need a change on offensive philosophy. Can’t win in the NBA taking jump shots and playing one on one basketball as we do. Ask Dallas. Establishing inside dominance is the key and we have two potential studs in the post.

You can count tons that don’t have a center. The Jazz in particular do not have a dominating big man. I agree with everyone about Woody’s ineptitude to use his entire roster efficiently. He is tearing these guys down by not giving them credit for their strengths. His best offense is ride Joe Johnson like a donkey in Haiti climbing a mountain on summer day at high noon.

I understand that josh isn’t playin to his potential. but as u seen that game against jazz. the offense is horrible woody needs to be FIRED. The team needs to run MORE. the hawks are not a half court team. the same play every time (give the ball to joe and watch him dribble the shot clock out and shoot a bad shot at 1 sec) which is the reason why he is struggling these past couple of months. they need to run more pick and roll with bibby and smith, joe and smith, bibby and joe, find marvin in the corners for 3s. slow the pace with a dose of horford. Woodson dumb a## doesnt understand that the hawks have speed and athleticism. to get points on fast breakin offense. crash the boards and RUN. The hawks are not the 04-05 Pistons, woody needs to understand that. They need a coach who can make them work hard on defense and be hard on these players to play to there full potential and have a fast tempo offense. ALSO the only reason the hawks push the celtics to 7 games because they had uptempo offense at home where JOSH SMITH was so effective scoring over 20pts and 6rbs at home. then u go to Boston where Woody decides to run haft court slow tempo offense, and they get crushed. Country Boy: here I am concerned about getting too loose with some photos and the front of AJC.com yesterday has links to the S.I. swimsuit issue. So from now on, all bets are OFF! …. Craig: I’ll get to the post, promise. … Bernie Matt: I like the passion. But you’re on the border with some of your posts. Tone down the disguised the profanity, etc., or future comments will be deleted …. Ray, I just used that stat to illustrate recent play. Fact is, I could come up with stats to counter your stats, but it doesn’t really matter. Bottom line: Josh Smith is not the player he should be right now, and almost everybody knows that (in and outside the organization). … Chris: things get blown out of proportion. My relationship with most people over at Georgia in the athletic department is just fine. The funny stuff tends to com out of fan perception. Some Georgia fans think I’m anti-Dog/pro Tech, and Tech fans think I’m anti-Tech and Pro-Dog. Fact is, I’m not anti- or pro anybody. Just writing columns. I’d love to get all of those fans together in one room, let them come to some consensus, then get back to me. … Kentrell: I agree completely, Hawks definitely need to run more. That’s how this team is built — Bibby, Joe, Horford, Josh — its made to be a running team. But there also needs to be a better plan in the half-court but they’re too inconsistent.

HERE WE GO AGAIN; BLAME EVERYTHING ON JOSH. HOW CAN HE DO WHAT HE DOES BEST WHEN PLAYS GO BACK AND FORTH TO JOE AND BIBBY THE ENTIRE GAME. JOSH NEEDS THE BALL IN HIS HANDS AT THE RIGHT TIME AND UNFORTUNATELY BIBBY AND JOE SEEM TO WANT TO AVID HIM. MAYBE IT IS THEIR PLAN TO MAKE JOSH LOOK BAD SO HE WILL BE TRADED. I FOR SOME REASON BLAME THE COACH FOR DEPENDING ON JOE AND BIBBY TOO MUCH. THE TEAM IS NOT LOSING BECAUSE OF JOSH; IT IS LOSING BECAUSE JOE AND BIBBY DO NOT SHOW UP AT THE SAME TIME. THAT IS WHY JOSH TAKES THINGS INTO HIS HANDS AT TIME. WATCH THE GAMES AND YOU WILL SEE THEM AVAID JOSH AND MESS UP EVERTIME.

JOSH SMITH IS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE PLAYERS IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE. ARGUABLY ONLY TWO OTHER PLAYERS IN THE N.B.A. CAN FILL A STAT SHEET LIKE HIM, THAT’S KEVIN GARNETT AND JOSH HOWARD. YOUNGEST PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE TO REACH 500 BLOCKS, TOPPING SHAQ ONEAL. THE ONLY REASON I GO TO THE GAMES IS TO SEE HIM MAKE A SPECTACULAR PLAY AND HE NEVER FAILS. ON THE FLIP SIDE JOSH IS INCONSISTENT ON THE OFFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL. HE NEEDS TO STOP TAKING THE 3PT SHOOT, AND GIVE THE BALL TO THE POINT GUARD ON FAST BREAKS. MAKE NO MISTAKE JOSH IS STILL THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER FOR THE HAWKS. WHEN HE IS OUT OPPONENTS KNOW THERE IS NO ONE TO STOP THEM FROM GETTING TO THE BASKET, SO FOR ALL OF YOU TALKING ABOUT TRADING THIS GUY FORGET IT!!!

thanks jeff, finally somebody agree. pick and roll could be an option in the half court or run joe off some screens so he can get better wide open shot and get people involved. I seen too much woody goes with the iso with joe one on one post up. teams are too smart for that. all the opponents does is double when he moves with the ball. which is why the shot clock tics way down. screens with bibby dribble penatration kick out. Heck, I know- I was just tweaking you because you’re so good at it! I email your columns during football season weekly to two buddies- one a UGA fan, one for Brigham Young (!)- because I find you know how to hit your spots. Or their spots.
But the Hawks- good gosh. Or should that be, good Josh- what happened to that guy? Certainly, he doesn’t have the coach that he needs, but he’s no pro, as in professional attitude. A pro doesn’t let his coach, his teammates or his opponent determine his level of effort, or knowledge of the game. As it is, the Hawks are out in round one if they keep to their present course.
