It’s WAAAAYYYY too early to put much credence in polling for the 2016 presidential race, but I did find a new Quinnipiac poll out of Florida intriguing for another reason.
The headline number out of the poll puts Hillary Clinton well ahead of Florida native sons Jeb Bush (51-40) and Marco Rubio (52-41), which adds to the thought that the presidential race would be Clinton’s to lose, should she choose to run. But again, a lot can change between now and then.
The real number that drew my attention was Rubio’s favorability rating. Just 41 percent of Florida voters told Quinnipiac that they approve of his performance as senator, which would be a deeply troubling number for a politician merely trying to win re-election. For someone eying a run for president or being mentioned as his party’s next great hope, it’s downright startling. I don’t know what Barack Obama’s numbers were in Illinois in 2006, but I bet they were a lot higher than that.
(Public Policy Polling produces similar results, with just 37 percent of Floridians backing a Rubio run for president and 53 percent opposing it.)
Last month, a similar poll in Louisiana found Bobby Jindal with a 37 percent job-approval number. In blue New Jersey, Chris Christie has a 78 percent approval rating, but since he’s not really conservative, I guess there’s no reason to bring him up.

Rubio’s history is fascinating. Apparently his parents fled the Stalin regime in Cuba in 1944.
No wait, that can’t be right.
Maybe it was the Pol Pot regime in Cuba in 1975.

Looks like the pattern we saw in the primaries of “oooooh, look at the shiny new toy!!” hasn’t worn off. But this also shows the disconnect between the CPAC types and the mainstream. So I’ll hazard a guess that the conservosphere will still oooh and aaaah over Rubio and he’ll get a lot of attention. But then another shiny new towy will come along.

Deficit?
Did someone say, deficit?
Which brings us to the economic level. The deficits that Bush ran up in the years in which the country was teetering on the verge of a serious recession had the beneficial effect of righting the economy. In that sense, deficits not only didn’t matter, but were a force for economic good.

That episode was troubling. I hope there’s more information that would cast it in a different light, but who knows? Regardless, I’d like to hear a public acknowledgement and apology. But my experience with such large organizations, regardless of the values they espouse, is they prefer to move quietly on, not reignite the past controversy, even if they want to take the institution in a different direction.
