I love guitar anthems, and “Seven Nation Army,” by the White Stripes, is one of my modern favorites. You hear that opening riff, and you’re hooked. I’m not a musician, so I have no idea how he does it, but there’s something unique about the sound that Jack White gets out of his guitar. Any song he plays can be identified as his. (I particularly like his collaboration with Loretta Lynn on their album “Van Lear Rose”. He treats Miss Loretta with the utmost respect, as of course he should, but he also pushes her to stretch musically which she seems to enjoy. The result is great.)
Anyway, on this beautiful spring day — maybe that’s why the guitar anthem theme hit me? — here’s Jack and Meg:

No denying this outfit’s power, and Jack White is a certifiably cool guy.
Never became a superduper fan of the Stripes but I always seem to like what I hear.
here’s Jack and Meg
For what it’s worth, it appears Jack would re-form that group in a heartbeat if she’d say it was ok. He’s said repeatedly that even though she’s not a technically “accomplished” drummer, he can’t quite get that sound from anyone else.
Or that’s what he’s said when I’ve heard him interviewed.

Yeah, PD, a friend played me the vinyl release of Blunderbuss on a fairly high-end system. It’s pretty awesome.
Almost feel like an mp3 album won’t do it justice (but of course that’s what I’d buy.)

He’s also obsessed about recording to analog, only doing the last touches digitally. Probably doesn’t make a discernible difference in what I am hearing, but I suspect it’s that attention to detail that makes his guitar sound so identifiable.
Also, he used to be an upholsterer. For what that’s worth.

He has to be getting his tone from pedals then, although Kay did make a few decent guitars. Decent, I said. Especially their archtops.
Silvertone made an amp in the fifties that was integrated into a guitar case. I’ve heard they sound pretty good. Probably a lot like the little two-tube Fender Champ I play through here at home. It’s basically what Eric and Duane used to record Layla.
We’re about to head into Athens to see Tommy Talton (Capricorn artists “Cowboy” and Jimmy Thackery (The Nighthawks). I met Tommy at a friend’s house back in December; we enjoyed a wonderful meal together then Tommy and his kb player regaled us for the evening.
