To our traveling companions on the highway of life

I lost a close, longtime friend last fall, and this week some of us who knew the man best are gathering from around the country for the first time since he left us so suddenly. We’ve told stories, laughed a lot and handled a few moments of sadness. It’s all good, as they say.

The experience brought this cut to mind, recorded by friends of George Harrison a year after his passing. The guitarist looking uncannily like a young George is his son Dhani, who at the time of the video was probably around 24. All things must pass.

Well, I’m doing my part to sacrifice for the sequester. I decided I would cut myself off at 18 PBRs for any night, just to recognize there’s some people that can’t hardly afford a 12-pack.

Have a good Saturday night everybody and don’t forget to get up for church tomorrow morning. Set your clock forward now and don’t you dare oversleep. You can always catch up on your sleep during the sermon.

Jay, enjoy your weekend remembering a lost friend. I remember your article about him and glad you are celebrating his life. I always enjoy your Friday music highlights and when Clapton is involved, that is just a bonus. Maybe we can all learn something by the fact that George and Eric could remain good friends despite all the stuff that happened on the journey.

If you check back through, here’s what I was referring to earlier in reference to Sen. Coburn’s tirade.

http://www.senate.gov/employment/po/positions.htm

Revised: March 07, 2013 at 4:43 PM

The Senate Employment Bulletin is published as a service to Senate offices choosing to advertise staff vacancies. The listing is posted online at http://www.senate.gov/employment and revised throughout the week.

[...]

221987 ASSISTANT TO THE CHIEF OF STAFF –
Republican Senator seeks Assistant to the Chief of Staff….

221986 FELLOW –
Moderate Democrat seeks a Fellow to assist with health care reform and deficit reduction….

221985 STAFF ASSISTANT –
Senate majority Subcommittee seeks Staff Assistant to work on health care and aging portfolio….

221984 BANKING AND TAX LA –
The office of Senator Mark R. Warner, a member of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, is looking for a Legislative Assistant to handle a portfolio that includes banking and financial services, tax, and economic policy….

221983 COUNSEL –
Republican Senator seeks Counsel to handle appropriations, judiciary, justice, and homeland security issues….

221982 MEDIA ASSISTANT –
U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., seeks a Media Assistant for his three person D.C. press office….

221981 SUMMER INTERNS –
Senator Tom Carper is accepting applications for Summer Interns. This paid internship provides an inside look at the legislative process as interns perform research on a wide variety of legislative issues, compose memos and attend hearings and events throughout the Capitol….

That’s just the first seven listings. Notice the time that was updated. The last one that I put in bold is actually for paid SUMMER jobs, nevermind the fact that cuts are starting in the spring.

To give an idea of how assinine his argument is, here’s a link discussing his letter he wrote questioning the Executive Branch job postings. Note the difference in time from this article vs when the Senate job postings were updated.

Posted by Eric Yoder on March 7, 2013 at 10:45 am

The top Republican on the Senate’s government oversight committee is questioning why agencies are continuing to hire when existing employees are facing unpaid furloughs, saying that “the average new hire equates to a one week furlough for 52 current government employees.”

In a letter to the Office of Management and Budget, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said that on Monday, “the first business day after sequestration, there were 606 new federal jobs posted on usajobs.com,” the government’s central recruiting site.

Pro-gun voters put heat on Democratic senators

By MATT GOURAS
Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Max Baucus has been here before.

Back during the Clinton era, the Democrat faced a choice: support an assault weapons ban urged by a president from his own party and risk angering constituents who cherish their gun rights, or buck his party. He chose the ban, and nearly lost his Senate seat.

Now, as he begins his campaign for a seventh term, Baucus faces the question again. For weeks, gun foes have sought assurances he would oppose the assault weapons ban. But it was only this past week he said he would oppose it.

That decision alone doesn’t settle the issue for his re-election campaign. His opponents are watching closely, eager to pounce as he navigates a series of other gun control proposals, including an expected call for universal background checks.

Baucus’ predicament is one that a group of Democrats like him in the West and South are facing. They hail from predominantly rural regions of the country where the Second Amendment is cherished and where Republicans routinely win in presidential elections.

From Montana to Louisiana, these anxious voters have made at least six Democratic senators a little uneasy heading into next year’s election season. Both sides are aware that gun-owners’ rights are taking shape as a campaign issue that could shift the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

“Make no mistake – it is a very delicate dance for rural state Democrats,” said Barrett Kaiser, a Democratic political consultant.

“I would be stunned if the Montana congressional delegation said anything but `hell no’ to gun control measures,” he added.

Good Sunday morning Fred, and anyone else out there peekin’ in…

This time change sucks, but this morning I did see another nice sunrise and hugged my favorite god tree. My wife and I like this guy the best…

Abelard:
Breton. God of love, loyalty, and couples. He and Heloise died together and were buried in the same tomb. They were faithful in their love until the end. Two tree’s, one dark skinned and one light are said to have grown intertwined above their joint grave.

We have a tree that has become two trees from one root system. It also has a knurl that looks like a big eye. Really cool, and we get good vibes around it…. Gotta love it.

Hey Fred, wasn’t it td that was worried about the Chinese military the other day??? Guess he doesn’t know the extent of their environmental problems. They’re gonna kill themselves off before they can wipe anybody else out.

A choking smog in Beijing in January, far above hazardous levels, has been one of the most dramatic signs of China’s environmental problems, but Dong is convinced that soil pollution is the country’s “silent killer.”

About 40 percent of China’s agricultural land is irrigated with underground water, of which 90 percent is polluted, according to Liu Xin, a food and health expert and a member of an advisory body to parliament, who was quoted in the Southern Metropolitan Daily.

http://news.yahoo.com/china-public-anger-over-secrecy-environment-033012400–business.html

Give them a few more years, and they’ll be able to use their water for a gas substitute and we’ll see a serious drop in the price of oil. Just goes to show that history repeats itself when people don’t pay attention. The US has already gone through the environmental issues with expansive growth. They could have looked at our past and avoided doing the same things. Instead, they’re gonna set one of their rivers on fire just like we did in Ohio long ago.

Instead, he constantly makes excuses for other people and himself. He tells one lie after another… and then grandstands on his “integrity.”
He’s nothing but a charlatan.” Even so… I know Obama will become the greatest president in U.S. history. Much like Kennedy, this has something to do with his charisma – which I find revolting, but others clearly love. However, that’s not the real reason… No, a simple secret lies behind Obama’s soaring power, which is still far from its peak.

It goes on to hit more of the GOP fear talking points and buzzwords..

Jokes aside, my main (not Maine!) objection to his presidency has been his centricism. I am not myself a centrist. However, what I subscribe to for myself is not of necessity what I think is in the best interest of the country. The funny thing, to me at least, is that it’s generally where the left attacks him, he gets the most points from me, and where they sing his praises, where he gets the fewest. But, in the long run, it’s all political…

And his health care? Don’t get me started…nationalize it and be done with it…

Really? You never read my stuff lol? I think he’s “ok.” He’s not in my opinion great or even especially good. Given the circumstances when he was elected, he was/is, while the better of the candidates, the wrong man. We needed a leader and he’s a manager. Of course no LEADERS have run for the office in a while.

Colin Powell would have been a LEADER. He didn’t run. I think Zell Miller would have been a leader, he didn’t run either. Warren Buffet is a leader. Steve Jobs, Arthur Blank, Bill Gates. Leaders.

Nick Saban, (stay with me lol) leader, Mark Richt, manager. The list of leaders is short because in our current culture, leaders are disdained. Folks act like we don’t need them, but we do. Civilization never moved forward because of a consensus, it moved forward when a LEADER led.

“Colin Powell would have been a LEADER”

I don’t agree. You should read up on the history of the complaints about him when he was in the service…that he was too DEFERENTIAL to those above him in command. That’s not the sign of a leader…that’s a follower

I don’t think “I will duel you” is leadership or the lies Powell told about Iraq.

Amen to that. I knew about Powerll before the UN debacle…which only confirmed for me that his detractors knew what they were talking about.

Speaking of leadership, most pols think weed should be legal but few in Washington have the guts to say it.

Most people in this country are stupid and do not know what is in their best interest.

Zell Miller a leader? Well, maybe in his younger years, before the dementia caught up with him. And maybe Colin Powell, before he was duped by Cheney, et al. As for the business men, quite possibly.

BTW, Frog, thanks for the birthday greeting the other night – much appreciated.

And yes, pot should, indeed, be legalized! No, I was too chicken to ever try it; what with wine & regular cigs, I think I don’t need another vice, tho I do buy a lottery ticket once in a while. :)

td,

The majority of voters are informed around election time.

The child like bickering makes them lose interest.

Kam – Great second half by the Blues. Really had us on our heels and we were lucky to get out of there tied.

Mornin’. Such as it is.

I’m ready to start a Leave My F….. Clock Alone movement.

Count me in. We shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our clocks, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!
