I lost a close, longtime friend last fall, and this week some of us who knew the man best are gathering from around the country for the first time since he left us so suddenly. We’ve told stories, laughed a lot and handled a few moments of sadness. It’s all good, as they say.
The experience brought this cut to mind, recorded by friends of George Harrison a year after his passing. The guitarist looking uncannily like a young George is his son Dhani, who at the time of the video was probably around 24. All things must pass.

Everybody who loved the Fab Four was, and to some extent or another, still is, heartbroken at the loss of John and George.
True. Thing about George was, he was with us long enough for most everyone to grow to love the guy, and yeah, I’m still heartbroken that we lost him
I haven’t read many of the comments, but if you haven’t yet seen the Scorcese documentary “Living in the Material World,” about George’s life, you should. It’s great–and amazingly, it doesn’t indulge in saccharine sentiments, it just plugs along and lets you, the viewer, fill in the emotional bonding.

A friend of mine here in Athens is the brother of the Allman Brothers Band’s late road manager, Twiggs Lyndon. Gregg gave Twiggs Duane’s tobacco sunburst Les Paul after Duane died. Twiggs would be killed in a sky diving accident a few years later, so my friend decided to keep it and give it to Duane’s daughter, Galladrielle, when she turned 21.
He kept it for years in a closet in his law office which was in the same building as the Georgia Theater. It’s a good thing she turned 21 when she did, because not long after “Hotlanta” was delivered to her, the Georgia Theater burned down.
Galladriel has graciously donated it to the rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I don’t know what its value is today but any ‘58 Les Paul is very valuable no matter what its history. This particular one was found by Billy Gibbons for the man who sat at the number 2 spot on Rolling Stones list of best guitarists of all time for many years. It’s the guitar you hear on the “Live at Fillmore East” album.

Breaking – 8:00
A lot of things, none of them good, are happening in our world.
Global warming is steadly increasing and will get worse and worse in the years to come.
The human population is steadly increasing with no end in sight.
Clean water, something most of us take for granted, will get increasingly scarce in the years to come.
Germs and viruses are becomming increasingly immune to our antibiotics and antiviral drugs.
A combination of all the above means food will become increasingly scarce in the years to come causing mass migrations from country to country. This will cause massive social upheavels in many countries including, possibly, the US.
In light of all this, violence against women will be the least of our worries sooner than we think.
Well what do you propose should been done about the situation? Forced sterilization? I say you should start with the poor since they are the drains on society and do not have the self control to only produce what they can take care of.

obama has turned sequester into a big joke.
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)who is now tweeting about his favorite instances of government waste at #SequesterThis. He has pointed out that on the first day after sequestration the government had posted 606 new federal jobs, including one at the Food and Drug Administration for “social media management,” 23 openings related to recreation, four public affairs specialists and a “director of history and museum policies and programs” for the Air Force (salary $143,600 to $165,300).
The USDA, which has warned of furloughs for food inspectors, had posted a job for a librarian. Dr. Coburn also asked that agency whether they might just consider canceling two planned conferences in California and Oregon that were to include “guest chefs” and tastings of “exceptional wines.”
He made a similar request of the FAA, which while warning it would have to furlough air traffic controllers, was also planning a Palm Springs “summit” for aircraft owners and pilots featuring Harrison Ford and had posted at least six new jobs.

td is forgetting one of the fundamental requirements of the rich: Plenty of poor people to do the work that rich people don’t want to do. He’s also forgetting the economics of that dynamic: The fewer people there are to do the dirty work, the higher the demand and wages for them. D’OH! The Plutocratic Imperative requires that poor people do, in fact, continue breeding at a rate that keeps them in poverty, to achieve the desired level of working poor who are grateful (GRATEFUL they should be!!!) to have any kind of work at all, for whatever wage their record-pay-level bosses deem appropriate, without whining about benefits or rights or unions or any of that nonsense!

With immigration on the rise and the quick availability of transporting the poor from around the world the uneducated and lazy citizens in this nation have become to much of a liability and have outlived their usefulness to society.

Part sarcasm, part sincerity?
Mark 10:21-22 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
Luke 14:12-14 He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

He said nothing about taking care of the able bodied that refuse to take advantage of the education opportunities that are given to them FREE or the unwilling to take the work that is available to them because they feel it is beneath them and would prefer to collect government benefits.

Rodney Francis is insufficiently ambitious. The pastor of the Washington Tabernacle Baptist Church in St. Louis has entered the fray over guns, violence and humanity’s fallen nature with a plan for a “buyback” of children’s toy guns. And toy swords and other make-believe weapons. There is, however, a loophole in the pastor’s panacea. He neglects the problem of ominously nibbled and menacingly brandished breakfast pastries.
Joshua Welch — a boy, wouldn’t you know; no good can come of these turbulent creatures — who is 7, was suspended from second grade in Maryland’s Anne Arundel County last week because of his “Pop-Tart pistol.” While eating a rectangular fruit-filled sugary something — nutritionist Michelle Obama probably disapproves of it, and don’t let Michael Bloomberg get started — Joshua tried biting it into the shape of a mountain but decided it looked more like a gun. So with gender-specific perversity, he did the natural thing. He said, “Bang, bang.”

Nope. He mentions neither of those words in any of the scriptures I’ve seen attributed to him on the topic.
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
YE may.
He commanded all people, not just church goers, to do so.
Jesus commanded, “Love your neighbor.” When asked to define “neighbor,” Jesus expanded the traditional meaning of the word–defining our neighbor as anyone who is in need, including social outcasts…

“The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

As it turns out, the story is about Munsey’s church, Family Christian Center, which claims to have a weekly attendance of 15,000, making it one of the largest churches in the country. According to an investigation by the NWITimes.com, a paper covering northwestern Indiana, the judge presiding over the foreclosure proceedings told attorneys in court, “When I saw some of the expenditures being made in this church when there was a mortgage not being paid, I was astounded.” [...] Munsey and his wife Melodye raked in “$2.9 million in total compensation from 2008 through 2011 from organizations connected to Family Christian Center, IRS records show.” In all, “The church annually spent $3.5 million in leadership compensation and had a $900,000 budget for travel and meals, a $500,000 housing allowance and $500,000 for jet fuel and other expenditures, according to the transcript. In 2010, the church paid $1 million for property in Illinois, the transcript states.”
So much for this church’s responsibility to the poor.
Maybe Munsey could’ve donated that $500,000 worth of jet fuel to the poor for their Gulfstreams, god knows you can’t get jet fuel at Whole Foods with food stamps.

ATHENS, Ga. —The founders and leaders of a Georgia-based ministry that sent discounted groceries to needy families across the country have pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Court records state that Pastor Wesley Joseph Wingo and Andrew Wingo both pleaded guilty this week to conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Linda Wingo also pleaded guilty to a charge that she concealed criminal activity by failing to tell law officers of the scheme to defraud the Monroe-based charity.
A former employee, Harry Michaels, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
A November 2011 indictment said ministry officials took millions of dollars from the organization to buy jewelry, athletic equipment, clothes and to make a down payment on a jet.

Yes the greed of people wanting more then they could afford crashed the economy. A good segment of our nation did not have the common sense to know that if you are only bringing in $30,000 a year then you could not afford a $200,000 home long term or if you were bringing in a combined income of $80,000 per year, the economy takes a downturn and one person looses their job then $40,000 per year is not enough to pay for a $400,000 home.
The government was greedy by wanting more tax money from property taxes so they changed the regulations on banks to support no money down payments on homes and by backing bad loans by the Federal government.
The banks were greedy by selling risky loans as derivatives (well that was not really greed but being smart).

For anyone else who cares, go read Matthew 28. You, td, have already rejected that. But it’s pretty clear that nations do have a responsibility to take care of their weaker, sicker, orphaned, whatever, members. The only argument amongst believers should be how to do that.
And in a nation where thousands die every year for lack of medical care, obviously depending on the CHURCH – as you put it – isn’t enough.

And there’s the same sign.
Well then you just gave your self away for being the socialist/communist that you truly are. I thought for a long time it was just because you were to dumb but now it is because you are embarrassed to admit that you want to government to control every part of the economy.

Very well said Cherokee.

Ideally in a society set up based on Jesus’ teachings, the welfare of everyone would be the responsiblitiy of all three – the church, better off individuals, AND the government. They’re not mutually exclusive, as you try to make themin your question.

Were is the blame for the individual? Is the individual not suppose to be held accountable for trying to buy a bigger house then they can afford? Is the individual not responsible for walking away from these houses and dumping them on the banks and the government?

Yet, the jackass failed to mention the number of job postings from the LEGISLATIVE BRANCH for positions with connections to Congress. When you point one finger out, there are 3 pointing right back.
All one has to do is look on usajobs.gov for Legislative Branch positions within the last 7 days. Effin’ hypocrite and complete dumbass. You would think one would do cursory research before making an ass of himself.

DannyX I grew up in td’s church – in a different state no doubt – but finally had my fill when it seemed that so many people there used the Bible to justify their own ideas. Since the verses you quoted confilct with their beliefs, they just ignore them. Or try to explain them away somehow.
And yet they insist that the rest of us follow their beliefs on other issues – abortion, gay marriage, whatever.
it’s weird.

Sounds like Jesus was a socialist/commie. He told a rich man to sell his belongings and give the money to the poor. He told people to invite the sick and poor to their banquets. He healed the sick without asking for their insurance card. He warned the rich about storing up wealth. He got physical with the greedy moneychangers.
Btw td, did Jesus say anything good about the rich?

The evangelical zealots no longer even consider the fact that they have antithetical views with Jesus, concerning the wealthy and the poor, as written in Mark 10:17-25.
I find this important and something not discussed AT ALL as to why the evangelicals have been so widely rejected in this country for the past fifty years and why they have become the albatross of the GOP.
Vilify the weak and glorify the wicked; I just don’t see a lot of Jesus in that…

And I will submit that government intervention has done nothing to resolve poverty and has really propagated an entitlement mentality that has hurt the poor. We have spend more then $16 trillion on the “great society” and today have just as high a % of poor in this nation as we did in 1964. On top of that we have created at least 20% of our population of entitled to government largess and no longer want to take care of themselves. .

And I agree with JamVet. Young people especially are leaving the evangelical churches in droves because of the stinginess and self righteousness of many in the conservative Christian hierarchy.
