Jeb Bush has a principled stand on immigration. Several, in fact.
Last summer, Jeb Bush was in favor of offering illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. As he told Charlie Rose:
“You have to deal with this issue. You can’t ignore it, and so either a path to citizenship, which I would support — and that does put me probably out of the mainstream of most conservatives — or a path to legalization, a path to residency of some kind.”
In his new book, “Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution”, Bush comes out in stalwart opposition to citizenship.
“It is absolutely vital to the integrity of our immigration system that actions have consequences — in this case, that those who violated the law can remain but cannot obtain the cherished fruits of citizenship. To do otherwise would signal once again that people who circumvent the system can still obtain the full benefits of American citizenship.”
Today on “Morning Joe”, Bush was back to his initial position. Kind of … He repeatedly stressed that the book was written last year, as if something had happened recently to alter what in the book seems to be a strong, principle-based opposition to a path to citizenship. He also argued that a path to legalization would not create a magnet for future illegal immigration, while a path to citizenship somehow would.
“If you don’t have a difference between a path to citizenship or a path to legalization, you’re going to create a magnet going forward for more illegal immigration. So going forward — we wrote this last year — going forward, if there is a difference, if you can craft that in law where you can have a path to citizenship where there isn’t an incentive for people to come illegally, I’m for it. I don’t have a problem with that.”
A couple of points:
1.) The Bush flip-flop-flip has angered veterans of Mitt Romney’s campaign, which last year felt stranded on unpopular ground with the candidate’s “self-deportation” approach.
“Where the hell was this Jeb Bush during the campaign?” one advisor told the Miami Herald. “He spent all this time criticizing Romney and it turns out he has basically the same position. So he wants people to go back to their country and apply for citizenship? Well, that’s self deportation. We got creamed for talking about that. And now Jeb is saying the same thing.”
2.) The distinction that Bush attempts to draw between legalization and citizenship in fact has little real consequence. Those who have immigrated here illegally were drawn by jobs, the chance to escape Third World living conditions or greater opportunity for their children. Getting U.S. citizenship was way, way down on their list. A nice possibility, maybe, but hardly a deciding factor.
The notion that a path to legalization would be a less powerful magnet than a path to citizenship makes no sense, and Bush is smart enough to know it. But when you’re caught tacking to the right when the political winds are blowing left, and when you have ambitions of becoming the third consecutive Republican president named Bush, you have to scramble a bit.

The Republicans have wasted six years and set themselves by at least that much vis a vis the illegal immigration issue.
One of the exceedingly few things that W got marginally right, in my estimation, was his proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007.
But the round ‘em up far right wingers (Sensenbrenner, Hastert, Tancredo) went berserk over it. As in slobbering berserk. And the truth be told, the Republican-lites across the aisle were not that much better.
Of course, as is their wont, these folks had ZERO better/practical ideas for a solution. Short of electrified fences and rounding up millions of men women and children and forcibly moving (hopefully with great violence and bloodshed) them to gawdknows where.
So the round ‘em types spit and fume and accomplish diddley squat, except to wreck their chances at winning elections…

Kam – That was tough one, a well played match right up until the ref decided the game. A horrible red card that even Fred wouldn’t have deserved. Nani had his leg up, but, the RM guy walked into it. Second time this week I’ve watched a game decided by the ref – did you see the U20 CONCACAF final. Mexican guys mugging US guys in the box and no call. Then the Mexican player flops in the box – PK. BS!

That is also the case in Franklin County, according to its School Superintendent Dr. Ruth Odell.
Odell said that the cut is significant for Franklin County.
According to Odell, the Franklin County school system has relied on its federal funding for the past several years and that reserve of federal money is just about depleted.
“We’ve used so much every year that we don’t have any carry over money,” Odell said. “We don’t have any room for cuts in the federal money. So it means what federal money we used to use will now have to come from our general fund or we will have to begin lay-offs.”
In Stephens County, Whiten says it is too soon to tell what further cuts may be coming and what impact more cuts would have on the next fiscal year, which will start on July 1.

Then they disappeared and we got Southtrust and then Wachovia and then we got Wells Fargo, etc. All I know is, there must be alot of profit in banking, the way these people buy out banks and make them disappear and then come up with new ones. Me, I think it’s a plot by the check-printing cos. to make us all throw away our checks and order new ones.
That’s my opinion and it’s very true. Have a good Hump Day everybody. The only good thing about it is this Chavez is toasting real comfortable about now. Dang Socialist! What’s that thing many conservatives have been saying about we need to cut spending???
The House is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a Continuing Resolution to fund the government. The idea is to keep the overall level of the sequester’s cuts in place, but to shield certain military projects and national security efforts from the pain. As for domestic spending? Well, those programs are out of luck.
The changes include $10.4 billion more funding for defense operations and maintenance “to prepare our troops for combat and peace-time missions, flight time and battle training,” according to a statement from House Appropriations Committee chairman Hal Rodgers (R-Ky.).
It also would increase funding for defense health and military family programs by $233 billion above last year’s levels, among other changes. Such programs would still technically be subject to the sequestration’s automatic spending cuts, but the CR would raise the base level of funding to shield them from the full impact.
Sounds like the House GOP wants to cut everything “except for the things we like”. I don’t see how this will pass the Senate, but then again, the Democratic Party of recent hasn’t been known to show a spine.
