Last summer, Jeb Bush was in favor of offering illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. As he told Charlie Rose:
“You have to deal with this issue. You can’t ignore it, and so either a path to citizenship, which I would support — and that does put me probably out of the mainstream of most conservatives — or a path to legalization, a path to residency of some kind.”
In his new book, “Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution”, Bush comes out in stalwart opposition to citizenship.
“It is absolutely vital to the integrity of our immigration system that actions have consequences — in this case, that those who violated the law can remain but cannot obtain the cherished fruits of citizenship. To do otherwise would signal once again that people who circumvent the system can still obtain the full benefits of American citizenship.”
Today on “Morning Joe”, Bush was back to his initial position. Kind of … He repeatedly stressed that the book was written last year, as if something had happened recently to alter what in the book seems to be a strong, principle-based opposition to a path to citizenship. He also argued that a path to legalization would not create a magnet for future illegal immigration, while a path to citizenship somehow would.
“If you don’t have a difference between a path to citizenship or a path to legalization, you’re going to create a magnet going forward for more illegal immigration. So going forward — we wrote this last year — going forward, if there is a difference, if you can craft that in law where you can have a path to citizenship where there isn’t an incentive for people to come illegally, I’m for it. I don’t have a problem with that.”
A couple of points:
1.) The Bush flip-flop-flip has angered veterans of Mitt Romney’s campaign, which last year felt stranded on unpopular ground with the candidate’s “self-deportation” approach.
“Where the hell was this Jeb Bush during the campaign?” one advisor told the Miami Herald. “He spent all this time criticizing Romney and it turns out he has basically the same position. So he wants people to go back to their country and apply for citizenship? Well, that’s self deportation. We got creamed for talking about that. And now Jeb is saying the same thing.”
2.) The distinction that Bush attempts to draw between legalization and citizenship in fact has little real consequence. Those who have immigrated here illegally were drawn by jobs, the chance to escape Third World living conditions or greater opportunity for their children. Getting U.S. citizenship was way, way down on their list. A nice possibility, maybe, but hardly a deciding factor.
The notion that a path to legalization would be a less powerful magnet than a path to citizenship makes no sense, and Bush is smart enough to know it. But when you’re caught tacking to the right when the political winds are blowing left, and when you have ambitions of becoming the third consecutive Republican president named Bush, you have to scramble a bit.

Mr. Doom – I feel most of our communication has been on a reasonably respectful level. In that spirit of sharing, I offer you this advice, which, of course, you are not obliged to take.
The next time you feel threatened on this blog, instead of posting a “you stupid libs” kind of response, try something like, “It doesn’t make sense because…” or “what you fail to consider is” or even that’s pretty stupid because…”
You’ll find posters will consider your arguments more carefully, and try to engage you on a more non-hostile level.
Of course, if you post here because you enjoy flame, carry on!

There are certainly libs on here that I’ve had quite rational conversations with and still do. I tried once many months ago to be civil to the worst of the libs on here and I gave him several weeks to reciprocate in a civil manner. He did not and hence I had to take the gloves off regarding him and a few others. I admit I do my share of flaming here but if someone from the lib side addresses me in a civil manner I usually respond in a likewise civil manner. They make their own bed. What I find amusing is that they cheer on some of their most offensive posters and then cry foul when a con like me plays hardball with them. They love to dish it out. They just can’t take it is all.

Barking frog,
I saw a discovery channel special on the island of Bermuda. If ever you see an island that literally does look like it could tip over it would be Bermuda. From the bottom of the ocean to the island on top it looks sort of like a mushroom. The stalk about halfway up from the ocean looks precariously thin and it literally makes it look like the ocean currents are eroding away the stalk to where the island will one day sink straight back into the ocean. But I’m guessing that even that stalk was miles wide and that it would probably be tens of thousands of years if ever before it eroded away if ever.

So the message from the markets is by no means a happy one. What the markets are clearly saying, however, is that the fears and prejudices that have dominated Washington discussion for years are entirely misguided. And they’re also telling us that the people who have been feeding those fears and peddling those prejudices don’t have a clue about how the economy actually works.

Matthew Dowd, a chief strategist for George W. Bush’s reelection, slammed CPAC (scheduled to kick off in mid-March) for inviting the one-time vice presidential candidate to the popular conference, while passing over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).
“CPAC, to me, has totally diminished its credibility as an organization,” Dowd said. “And you invite Sarah Palin, who wasn’t competent enough to keep a Fox News contract? But she’s invited to a CPAC meeting?”

I’m certain profitability has something to do with the market rise also. Companies have gotten much leaner, not spending as much on training and hiring which are cash drains, etc. A leaner company means a fatter bottom line.
The market rise certaintly isn’t due to economic fundamentals with a half of one percent economic growth last quarter. I think we can all agree on that.

I wasn’t suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over, I was using a metaphor to say that … the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents—an additional 80,000 people during peak construction on the tiny island with a population of 180,000—could be a tipping point which could adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and could overburden its overstressed infrastructure.”

Smart people sometimes say dumb things. That’s all that was. Just like the female congressperson who asked if they could send the Mars rover to the flag that Armstrong planted when he was there.
Also, IMO, Doomys statement was not rece-baiting.
But, I have asked this question, and NEVER received a response from anyone left of center.
Why do comments from politicians on the left require context, further explaination and such, but comments from the right are not given equal treatment?
“You didn’t build that” – This is what Obama was actually saying, look at the rest of the speech, what was the context?
“Guam may tip over and capsize” – This is what Hank was actually saying, look at the rest of the speech, what was the context?
“I like being able to fire people” (?) – See Romney is a heartless SOB. (Although he was CLEARLY talking about severing ties with companies that don’t perform)
“Deficts don’t matter” – See, repubs only worry about deficts when a ni***r is in office. (Although he was CLEARLY talking about deficts not mattering to the voting public at election time (during the time he said it))
Why does one get the microscope treatment and the other is taken at face value. They are all politicians, so that means they are all imperfect.

Global warming is epic, long-term study says
CNN) — Global warming has propelled Earth’s climate from one of its coldest decades since the last ice age to one of its hottest — in just one century.
A heat spike like this has never happened before, at least not in the last 11,300 years, said climatologist Shaun Marcott, who worked on a new study on global temperatures going back that far.
“If any period in time had a sustained temperature change similar to what we have today, we would have certainly seen that in our record,” he said. It is a good indicator of just how fast man-made climate change has progressed.

I like being able to fire people” (?) – See Romney is a heartless SOB. (Although he was CLEARLY talking about severing ties with companies that don’t perform)
Actually no. He talked of firing “someone”. Now I know “corporations are people too my friend” but someone is not just “companies”, it can be real individual people. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57355212-503544/mitt-romney-i-like-being-able-to-fire-people-for-bad-service
He may have said it in regards to healthcare but in fact, given his history at Bain, it fit the overall narrative of firing people. It was not a misrepresentation in that regard.
FWIW.

In another sign of the growing political support for health reform — or the sense that opposing its most popular elements has become politically perilous — a group of top House Republicans have written a letter to President Obama asking him to preserve a temporary program included in the law that provides health care coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
The so-called Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) was designed as a bridge to the exchanges for families and individuals who don’t have an offer of coverage from an employer and cannot find insurance in the individual market. The $5 billion program, which covers only sick people is incredibly costly, and will soon stop processing new applicants.
Republicans however, are incensed, and are demanding that the White House shift funds from prevention or comparative effectiveness research to keep the PCIP running.
Do not pay attention to the GOP behind the curtains.

I agree. It’s just like when Palin said (and YES, I know…but we’re talking about what made the rounds) that she could see Alaska from her front porch. Half of the ditzies hereabouts smirking had no idea that the US and Russia share a common border? How do I know that? I asked well away from the topic when we were talking about border security, and sure enough, lots answered with Canada and Mexico but only three of some 10 answered with Russia….
I love a good swipe, particularly one involving a public person who’s supposed to be able to make a bit of sense, but let’s do keep it in context…

Hey Thulsa, why are the billionaires and American capitalists waging a vicious class war against the 99%? Just curious, and thought you might have some insight on it. Feel free to explain at length.

All politicians say stupid stuff that has to be clarified. It is no more of a trait of the left as it is for the right. Previous generations of politicians escaped the scrutiny because of a slower media. Today’s politicians don’t have that luxury.

Palin wasn’t the one who said that. That quote came from Tina Fey. Palin talked about Putin rearing his head over Alaska.

Actually no. He talked of firing “someone”. – I stand corrected. You are right.
He may have said it in regards to healthcare but in fact, given his history at Bain, it fit the overall narrative of firing people. It was not a misrepresentation in that regard.

Although I didn’t/don’t support Romney, I am willing to accept his explaination of what he meant.
“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me,” Romney said at a Monday breakfast in New Hampshire, when talking about health care. “You know, if someone doesn’t give me a good service that I need, I want to say, ‘I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.’”
In the remarks, about his belief in providing people with options, Romney — who in Massachusetts enacted an individual health care mandate while governor — spoke about the need to incentivize insurance companies.
“I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them,” he said.
But that’s just the Libra in me.

The really funny part is that Palin didn’t say that, Tina Fey from SNL did.

TBG, you may accept what you want. That’s your right.
But the words are used, in my opinion, not because that was exactly what he said but because they succinctly recapped his attitude toward firing people and his treatment of them. There is an underlying truth. That cannot be said of the distortion of Obama’s “you didn’t build that”. In the larger context of Romney’s actions in life, the words appear very accurate.

Keep, I see what you are saying. I didn’t really think of it that way. I was just thinking of it from the perspective of *No matter what Romney does/says, the left will label him as “evil”*
Even his wife’s MS was fodder for snark and jokes.
Kind of the way I look at the right when it comes to Obama.
