It is not racism to try to help DeKalb students

“Though the public has an interest in its elected officials being able to serve in the offices to which they’ve been elected, there is an even greater public interest at stake here. The interest of the public in a healthy school system outweighs the interests of the board members in serving in their positions.”

Those two simple sentences, written by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Story in his ruling Monday, capture the essence of the controversy surrounding the DeKalb County School Board.

Students are more important than politicians. Not exactly rocket science, right? Yet too many members of the school board lost sight of that fact, assuming a degree of inflated self-importance that made an already difficult district impossible to govern. The fact that those members — most prominent among them Eugene Walker — continue to operate under the delusion of their own ego, even after reminders to the contrary by the state Board of Education, the governor, the DeKalb public and now a federal judge, speaks volumes.

In the wake of Monday’s ruling, the six members of the board suspended by Gov. Nathan Deal should resign, in the interest of those they supposedly serve.

Unfortunately, Walker and other board members have been encouraged in their obstinance by others who have lost track of priorities. Last week, leaders of the Georgia and DeKalb County chapters of the NAACP stood on the steps of the Capitol to condemn the governor for daring to intervene on behalf of DeKalb’s students, and went on to suggest that his actions were motivated by racism.

It is hard to understand the misplaced priorities that drive such statements, and hard to ignore the damage they can do in such a sensitive situation. Yes, racism does still exist, and it does still affect governmental policy and action, from health care to education to transportation. But crying racism as a political tactic, with no evidence that it is playing a role, cheapens the problem. It also ends up encouraging the very attitude that it supposedly condemns.

One important manifestation of racism is apathy — the malign neglect of struggling minority communities by a majority that cannot be bothered to care. If racism was the governor’s motivation, the easy thing to have done was absolutely nothing. Deal and the state Board of Education could have washed their hands of the problem and allowed events to take their course. And we all know what that course would have been:

Hamstrung by its board, the district would be stripped of its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which had already put it on probation. Loss of accreditation would in turn have devalued property throughout the county, and more importantly it would devalue the diplomas of DeKalb graduates.

The crisis would snowball from there. With accreditation lost, the competition and distrust between communities within the district would explode. Political clamor would grow for private alternatives to the public-school model. Armed with a major crisis in the state’s third-largest school system, a conservative Republican such as Deal could have used the opportunity to open the doors further to vouchers and private charter schools.

Instead, he chose to intervene and accept a degree of ownership in the problem. For that, he is rewarded by so-called community leaders with suggestions of racism?

It’s important to note that other black elected leaders, including House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, a Democrat and a DeKalb resident, have stood in public support of Deal’s decision. Like the governor, they have nothing to gain politically by such a step, and in fact take a risk by reaching across partisan and racial lines on such a potentially emotional issue. But they too recognize that the education of schoolchildren must take precedence.

The NAACP leaders, on the other hand, show little sign of being motivated by such concerns. Their interest was much more narrow: trying to save the positions of the six board members, five of them black, who had been suspended by the governor. Despite the noble history of their organization, they have acted as if the “P” in NAACP stood for “politicians.”

It stands for “people”.

One last observation on the bizarre conspiracy theory that the NAACP is a “racist organization”…

Founded in 1909 partly in response to race riots in Springfield, Ill., NAACP begin as a coalition of black and Jewish activists with whites serving in leadership position in many chapters, and it was only later that it became a predominantly black organization. Sullivan also noted that the NAACP spoke out against the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Tatcho Mindiola, director of the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston, said that while some Hispanics were NAACP members during the civil right years, their election to leadership roles is a new phenomenon. Mindiola said the NAACP has won over some Hispanics because of recent positions it has taken on issues important to Latinos.

“The group has shown it is fighting for civil rights for all minorities,” said David Alcantara, 52, president of the Pleasantville-Mainland chapter in New Jersey.

Put that in your White Power pipe and smoke it War Eagle…

I guess that thought never entered his mind while taking money for his vote from and under cover FBI agent who he thought was a developer while serving on the Dekalb county commision.Did he think about the votes that were voided and the people he betrayed after he was convicted of extortion. The funny this is if you bring this issue up you’re either racist or an uncle tom.Black leaders dont understand how they perpetuate the problems of black people. But I guess they have to in order to make a living.

Well, I see the furlough notices are going out to federal workers. Civilians that work for the Defense Department get 22 furlough days, roughly a 10% pay cut. Civilians in other agencies get 7 furlough days. And nobody can use annual leave or sick leave to avoid taking unpaid days.

Do you have a better example?

Here’s one. CBP uses overtime to meet minimum staffing needs. Overtime has been cut, so wait times for international processing will increase, as they already have at the larger airports. The reduction in staffing will result in fewer officers being TDY’d to the Southern Border to help with staffing issues there. Hiring has been frozen, so there will be no new officers to aid in the shortage. People who use private aircraft will also be affected as many of those aircraft are processed by officers assigned to public airports, such as the case with PDK and Hartsfield. Fewer officers mean that those private jets won’t have Customs waiting on the tarmac to clear them as quickly as before.

Slowly, things will begin to roll downhill. Airlines schedule people with tight connections to keep planes full. Having 2-4 hour delays in clearing customs will wreak havoc with their reservation system causing them to lose money. Give it a month or two, and the business community will frown on all this sh*t.

He told us it was wrong to be 11 trillion dollars in debt, EVEN UNPATRIOTIC, I agreed with him. Now we are 17 trillion dollars in debt. Its still wrong, I havent changed my opinion, obama changed his. His spendulis idea was a disaster. Obamacare has been a disaster. Egypt is now governed by terrorists. Guns sold to drug cartels in Mexico that were used to murder Americans. US Ambassador killed in Libya that obama blamed on a video, which turned out to be a lie. He didnt give me any reasons to vote for him again.

Romney was a business leader. He had a history of saving companies that were on the brink of failure. Yet obama focused on one that he had nothing at all to do with its closing. So I gave obama a chance, he failed so i wanted change. We did not get that change so America will continue to suffer from the policies of a proven failure.

@keith

Have you every looked at what comprises the $17 Trillion debt?
You state ObamaCare has been a disaster; when does it start?
Egypt is a self-governing country, not a state of the United States.
Don’t know if you keep up with these sort of things, but, from my standpoint the situation in Libya has CIA written all over it. Do you think they are going to tell you what they did and why the did it?
Again, “Fast and Furious” was a George W. Bush operation that was stopped by Attorney General Holder.

When you mention Mitt Romney and his business acumen, did you ever consider that Matt Romney parlayed his wealth into an empire that has an estimated value of $250 Million dollars. He was the creator of Staples Office Supplies, nothing more. And, while governor of Massachusetts, he got help from some of the most well-versed scholars on health care. President Obama used that same model and those same professors to create “ObamaCare.”

Laugh, boo hoo all you want to, but the break down of the American family is the root of the demise of education. Morals, family values, accountability all play a part. If no one at home cares, 20,000 per kid per year will not help. Teachers can only do so much.

Did you not understand my post or stop reading after the first sentence.Black leaders are self annointed. In my eyes there’s no such thing.

I read your post. I don’t recall you saying “self annointed” Black leaders either. The last part of your post, “Black leaders dont understand how they perpetuate the problems of black people. But I guess they have to in order to make a living.” doesn’t make it appear that you don’t believe in such a thing. That’s just my reading of your words though.

Jay is wrong and most of you are wrong. Jay reveals his stupidity by mentioning race. Racism is white supremacy . Its part of the fabric of America and undergirdes everything . People like Jay are experts on race but he will never write a column denouncing white supremacy because he enjoys the benefits. Thats why most whites remain silent to disgusting comments , emails or pictures of President Obama . They could care less unless it affects them. Look at the Senator from Kentucky who was NOW outraged at racist comments toward his Asian wife.Black people you have no power . You gave that up when decided to integrate with people who met your children with fists and hatred. Barak Obama is President of the United States FIRST. His Race to the Top is about continuing to Privatize education. Bruce Dixon sums it up . “It’s time to take the discussion out of shallow waters like whether school closings are “racist” or not, and call the real names and frames of what’s happening and how it’s made to happen. We won’t rescue public education, we have no hope of stemming the wave of high-stakes testing and privatization without killing these corrupt private accreditation agencies, and substituting some transparent, fair and bottom-up system of accrediting schools and school systems. Congress did not approve Race To The Top, and its attendant wave of teacher firings, school closings and the like. But it’s federal policy and it’s happening. Lots of Obama apologists excuse his supposed inability to get good things done with the claim that Republicans in the Congress and the media block him. But the lack of a majority in Congress hasn’t stopped him from doing some perfectly horrible things, like Race To The Top. The role of privately owned, pro-privatization entities in school accreditation is an object lesson in how the most powerful office in the world can reach around Congress if it wants to, and enforce its will (and the will of the charter school sugar daddies) upon hundreds of local boards of education and hundreds of poor communities across the country” You are fools and being played .

“Black leaders are self anointed. In my eyes there’s no such thing.”

Then why are you so concerned. I’m sure most blacks you know don’t say they speak for them or have you ever ventured to ask and discuss this issue with them?

There are pseudo and faux leaders for basically any demographic you can mention and in most cases they are “self appointed” as you mentioned.

One could ask the same question about white leaders.
How does one become a “leader” without being designated by someone other than themselves?

Would you consider Ralph Abernathy, Joseph Lowery, Fred Shuttlesworth, Colin Powell, Sojourner Truth leaders?

This one is really troubling, given the fact that there are major reports about our DoD having to ramp up efforts to meet the cyberterror threat posed by the Chinese military.

Without our technological advantage, the worlds largest military may try to start a war with us, knowing that we may not be able to retaliate with our nuclear deterrence.

Racism is white supremacy

Wrong! Racism is actions taken by someone with power or authority over another based on their racial makeup. It isn’t White, Black, or Yellow. All it takes is for the bigoted person to act on their bigotry and have the power to affect the person they’re targeting.

And while Romney was doing that, what was zero doing? He was a community organizer in the hoods of Chicago. How successful would you say he was in that endeavour? Jesse Jackson wants the National Guard called in to reorganize what your community organizer left. I will take Romneys 250 million dollar empire of created wealth for not just himself but many others over the common street thugs obama is responsible for in Chicago.

“That still doesn’t help with my questions. US News does not speak for the Black community. The only people who appear concerned about “Black leaders” are the media and some of y’all White folks.”

I hear you but your logic escapes me.

And that’s o.k. We can both live with that.

Bottom line is that there are “Black Leaders” that are recognized by the black community, the white community, the purple community, the news media, Congress, etc., etc.

I don’t see why that is so difficult for you to understand or acknowledge.

It is what it is.

Jay the problem is the media like yourself who keep people divided bringing up race. The real issue is both parties are playing us. Quality education for all can be secured only by allocating trillions of dollars to hire teachers and staff at decent wages and benefits, reduce class sizes, repair older schools and build new ones, and equip all schools with the most up-to-date learning tools. Such measures will never be carried out by the Democratic Party, which, no less than the Republican Party, is a political instrument of the financial elite. Obama’s election campaign, based on his claim to represent “change” and “hope,” was a fraud. He was handpicked by powerful corporate interests in part because they calculated they could use his African American background to dupe workers and youth into thinking he would be more sympathetic to the needs of working people.
Black people voted for him and record numbers . People like Mo Ivory and Dr. White defend him to no end. While all of this is occuring NO one mentions he is continuing the policies of No Child Left Behind. You are being tricked !!

You forgot to mention President Obama being a law professor at the University of Chicago.
You did not make a determination as to where President Obama was Mayor of Chicago?
You forgot to let everyone know that he was a IL state senator.

If these people that you appraise as being street thugs, why have you not lent a measure of your expertise in curing this problem? Or, were you looking closely at Bernie Madoof plan of action to rob, cheat and steal at least $50 Billion dollars of unsecured paper?

Is that how you keep yourself in food and shelter?
