As share of GDP, corporate profits highest since 1950

From The New York Times:

“So far in this recovery, corporations have captured an unusually high share of the income gains,” said Ethan Harris, co-head of global economics at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. “The U.S. corporate sector is in a lot better health than the overall economy. And until we get a full recovery in the labor market, this will persist.”

The result has been a golden age for corporate profits, especially among multinational giants that are also benefiting from faster growth in emerging economies like China and India.

…. As a percentage of national income, corporate profits stood at 14.2 percent in the third quarter of 2012, the largest share at any time since 1950, while the portion of income that went to employees was 61.7 percent, near its lowest point since 1966. In recent years, the shift has accelerated during the slow recovery that followed the financial crisis and ensuing recession of 2008 and 2009, said Dean Maki, chief United States economist at Barclays.

Corporate earnings have risen at an annualized rate of 20.1 percent since the end of 2008, he said, but disposable income inched ahead by 1.4 percent annually over the same period, after adjusting for inflation.

“There hasn’t been a period in the last 50 years where these trends have been so pronounced,” Mr. Maki said.

Yet conservatives continue to argue that the business climate under President Obama stifles profitability.

This seems a good time to rerun the chart below, taken from data compiled by the Federal Reserve of St. Louis. In the chart, the share of the national economy, or GDP, going to workers’ paychecks is in blue. The share of the economy that is going to after-tax corporate profits is in red. (Again, note that in this combined chart, the two statistics have separate scales.)

Just a question on the TV topic, haven’t seen any comments about LED TV’s? Good / not good? I, like some on here, have LCD Vizio’s and have been very pleased.

I don’t understand why you can’t just buy a large TV monitor, as the internal receivers are useless, unless that’s your only receiver.

Call me crazy but having the control to drive 230MPH a few inches away from your competitor WITHOUT touching him (unless you wanna die) is real racing to me.

It doesn’t matter what speed it is, to them they are all going the SAME speed in a pack. If you think NASCAR drivers can’t drive within inches of each other, you’ve never seen Talladega or Daytona where they are thre and 4 wide nose to tail. 43 cars all close enough together to reach out the window and shake hands,…………

But it’s easy to block, it’s harder to stay in front of someone that can AND will but a bumper to your ass and move you out of the way after politely asking you to move a couple of times…….

“A new analysis, however, shows that average tax bills for high-income families rarely have been higher since the Congressional Budget Office began tracking the data in 1979. Middle- and low-income families aren’t paying as much as they used to.”

And the reason for that would be?

“Average after-tax incomes for the top 1 percent of households more than doubled from 1979 to 2009, increasing by 155 percent, according to the CBO. Average incomes for those in the middle increased by just 32 percent during the same period while those at the bottom saw their incomes go up by 45 percent.

“You’ve got to think about the context,” said Chuck Marr, director of federal tax policy for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. “We just had three decades in the United States where we had a tremendous increase in inequality.”

The key word here is HOUSEHOLD income. Can you also name the other major variable that has happened in the past 20 years? Single parent households. Could this be a big reason for the disparity?

When one is doing statistics then one must be looking at all the variables to get averages for population groups.

Wow! I guess Jonathan Alter is a right-wing nutjob or just getting old and losing his edge like Woodward: “I had a young reporter asking tough, important questions of an Obama Cabinet secretary,” says one DC veteran. “She was doing her job, and they were trying to bully her. In an e-mail, they called her the vilest names — bitch, c–t, a–hole.” He complained and was told the matter would be investigated: “They were hemming and hawing, saying, ‘We’ll look into it.’ Nothing happened.”…

One correspondent says that when he inquired about a staging choice for the president’s speech, he was steamrolled. “There was one specific White House aide calling me up, yelling and screaming,” he says. “It was condescending and abrasive: ‘Why is this a story? Why are you doing this? This is of no consequence. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.’”

This went on for two days. “All I wanted,” says the reporter, “was an answer to a question. It’s not like I was looking to do a 12-page exposé to take down an aide. It was unnecessary vociferousness.” He eventually got his statement.

Another White House correspondent says that last week’s blowup over pool reporters’ access to the president’s golf game with Tiger Woods — which was none — is indicative of a larger problem. “Today’s a perfect example,” he says. “Jack Lew is sworn in” — as US Treasury secretary, on Thursday — “and they didn’t even allow a photographer in there. A reporter asked [press secretary] Jay Carney why, and his answer was, ‘It’s a family ceremony.’ No! This is a high-ranking government official whose salary is paid for by taxpayers. No.”

Did you see the names they were calling a FEMALE reporter? Who is waging the war on women again?

AFP – China’s defence budget is set to rise 10.7 percent this year, state media said on Tuesday as the national parliament’s annual gathering opens, a slight drop from a 11.2 percent increase in 2012.

“China plans to raise its defence budget by 10.7 percent to 720.2 billion yuan” ($115.7 billion) in 2013, the Xinhua news agency said, citing a budget report that will be reviewed by the National People’s Congress (NPC), the national legislature.

China’s military budgets have risen steadily in recent years along with the country’s booming economic growth, and experts say the actual totals are usually substantially higher than the publicly announced figures.

The increases have become a sensitive topic as they come with China taking what some neighbouring countries consider a more assertive military stance on long-simmering territorial disputes.

In a departure from normal practice, the legislature had declined to announce the 2013 defence budget at a press conference on Monday, when NPC spokeswoman Fu Ying responded with frustration when she was asked about the topic.

“It seems China has to explain every year to the outside world why we should strengthen national defence and why we should increase the military budget,” Fu said.

cons got busted for bribing a “escort” to lie.

Figures, they just have to lie and cheat.

What a horrible life they lead.

James O’Keefe is a Dominican lawyer now?

Reading that story makes me think that O’Keefe doesn’t have pockets deep enough to pull this off. If there are charges, like filing a false report, coming, there is likely to be some deep pocketed people implicated based on the whole thing. Tucker Carlson would be my pick to spill the beans and turn state’s snitch.

I love you Kamchak.

You are a pretty brown poodle.

We just need to get your eyes cleaned and spruce up that pretty little poodle cut you like to sport. :)

The true lies within the penumbra, that partial shadow, as in an eclipse, between regions of complete shadow and complete illumination.

The chains of certainty encumber us.
