Foreign governments with U.S. writers on their payroll?

This is pretty damn scummy:

“A range of mainstream American publications printed paid propaganda for the government of Malaysia, much of it focused on the campaign against a pro-democracy figure there.

The payments to conservative American opinion writers — whose work appeared in outlets from the Huffington Post and San Francisco Examiner to the Washington Times to National Review and RedState — emerged in a filing this week to the Department of Justice. The filing under the Foreign Agent Registration Act outlines a campaign spanning May 2008 to April 2011 and led by Joshua Trevino, a conservative pundit, who received $389,724.70 under the contract and paid smaller sums to a series of conservative writers….

Trevino’s subcontractors included conservative writer Ben Domenech, who made $36,000 from the arrangement, and Rachel Ehrenfeld, the director of the American Center for Democracy, who made $30,000. Seth Mandel, an editor at Commentary, made $5,500. Brad Jackson, writing at the time for RedState, made $24,700. Overall, 10 writers were part of the arrangement.”

You take secret, undisclosed money from a foreign government to write hit pieces in U.S. media against a man, in this case Anwar Ibrahim, who is struggling to bring democracy to his country and was beaten and imprisoned for years for daring to challenge the dictatorial government? (Russia has apparently run similar pay-to-say operations.)

Much of Trevino’s work under the Malaysian contract has been removed by the outlets that published it. But you can get a taste of its amoral quality from this piece that was published as a rebuttal to a Trevino column.

And here’s a Rachel Ehrenfeld piece, condemning Ibrahim for “careless sexual behavior” among other things.

We already know of course that “you can’t believe everything that’s on the Internet.” But paid agents of foreign governments masquerading as American journalists takes things to a dangerous level and says a lot about the character of those involved.

UPDATE: Among those named as receiving money from Malaysia in Trevino’s belated filing as a foreign agent is Christopher Badeaux. Here’s a small sampling of his Malaysia-related work at RedState.com:

“Najib Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, has been on a more or less singular crusade to convince the Muslim world — and the West — that there is a path for moderate Islam in the world, that Islam does not equal terror, and that the taking of a life is contrary to Islam and civilization. His speech at Oxford was of a piece with that….

The salient point here is not whether we agree with the prime minister’s theological assertions, but rather we can appreciate the extraordinary effort he is making here, and the importance for the United States of his efforts.”

And:

In Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of Malaysia’s opposition, has apparently been caught in adultery, with video evidence that Dartmouth scientists say nearly certainly implicates him. The major dailies are calling on him to resign. For three years, after failing to topple the governing party in the 2008 elections, he has crisscrossed the planet telling anyone and everyone who would listen how corrupt and evil the governing party is. And yet despite all of this — despite his stated certainty that his opposition coalition of socialists, Islamists, and yuppie liberals is the only chance his country has to avoid certain doom at the hands of the centrist coalition that has been re-elected time and again in Malaysia, he has refused to resign.”

“Yes, abortion is “sickingly wrong”, but so is trying to take away the right of a woman to own her own body…having said that, the lessening of abortions would be quite easy if contraception was more readily available. Get religion out of it and accept the fact that the human being is a sexually social animal. The Maker made us that way. It’s plain stupid to try to prevent what is a natural biological function. If you want to stop abortion, scream your loudest to your Congress Person to pass a good birth control bill paid for by medical insurance….simple as that.”

I don’t begrudge a woman wanting to have an abortion when she did not choose to engage in sexual activity leading to a pregnancy (such as with rape and molestation). But I do mind her wanting to essentially take a life because a pregnancy is inconvenient or unwanted after FIRST CHOOSING to engage in intercourse. That to me is like a drunken person wanted to “abort” a car accident he caused and which resulted in fatalities. One may safely and reliably avoid pregnancy by various inexpensive methods (condoms, fertility awareness, withdrawal during fertile days and so on) if one wanted to. You seem to prefer the convenience of abortions above the inconvenience of using such contraceptives (infanticide over a little hassle) and condemn me for claiming that is sick and immoral. What has this world come to we people reason like that?

In a place you only dream of, where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains, filled my head plain as could be
As a rainbow grew around the sun, all my stars above,
who died Came from somewhere beyond the scene you see
These lovely people played just for me

Now if I let you see this place where stories all ring true
Will you let me past your face to see what’s really you
It’s not for me I ask this question as though I were a king
For you have to love, believe and feel
Before the burst of tambourines take you there

Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone, soul and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you

Those who don’t believe me, find your souls and set them free
Those who do, believe and know that time will be your key
Time and time again I’ve thanked them for a peace of mind
That helped me find myself amongst the music and the rhyme
That enchants you there

Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone, soul and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you
Yeah they play just for you

Hush now don’t you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye

You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head

Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game
Of life

So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
Your dream is over…

Or has it just begun?

There’s a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night

Relax child, you were there
But only didn’t realize
And you were scared

It’s a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you’ll hear and see
This magic new dimension

I
Will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I
Will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you

In silent lucidity…

Quite right, as it is for all of us. But abortion is not the killing of another human being…so it’s none of your business. If you don’t like it that women are given control over what happens to their own bodies…take it up with your God. Or Mother Nature, which ever you prefer. 92% of the abortions in this country, that is a little over 116M/yr, are performed due to “societal reasons”, ie birth control. Someone didn’t wear a condom, an IUD, take the appropriate measures to prevent the killing of another human being. Is is too much to ask of those involved to take some precautions? Most of these precautions are free….. don’t cost a dime. Most everyone knows the risks of unprotected sex. If abortions were not so freely available, you would see a dramatic drop in the killing of the unborn. I have no issue with women being the final arbiter in determining whether or not to keep the fetus. I do have issue with the attitude that many have about pregnancy and the consequences of making bad decisions. Having sex has it’s consequences. If you are not able to face these consequences, you should abstain.

116 Million?? Are you sure about that number?

Actually you can not only abstain in order to avert an unwanted pregnancy, you can use a condom or an IUD or a spermicide or birth control pills or the day after pill or wait and see if God wants to abort the little bugger for you or you could even expose yourself to any number of environmental influences…

kayaker @ 6:31
Most of us on the right would accept some of your blatant bias if, just once in a awhile, you would deviate a bit from the standard fare and present a thread where you took a middle of the ground type of stand and let the bloggers decide for themselves what was correct and what was not.

Moochers by any other name are still moochers. I can’t understand how people can come here, rail about people not doing things for themselves, and ask Jay to write what THEY want. Last time I checked, Jay is/was an opinion writer. The opinion writer loses his credibility when he writes the opinions of others and not his own. People fail to realize that an opinion can be valid, even under false pretenses as that opinion belongs to the person expressing it. It doesn’t have to be factual or correct for the person’s opinion to be valid.

If abortions were not so freely available, you would see a dramatic drop in the killing of the unborn.

Really?

LONDON – Abortion rates are higher in countries where the procedure is illegal and nearly half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe, with the vast majority in developing countries, a new study concludes.

Experts couldn’t say whether more liberal laws led to fewer procedures, but said good access to birth control in those countries resulted in fewer unwanted pregnancies.

The global abortion rate remained virtually unchanged from 2003 to 2008, at about 28 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, a total of about 43.8 million abortions, according to the study. The rate had previously been dropping since 1995.

About 47,000 women died from unsafe abortions in 2008, and another 8.5 million women had serious medical complications. Almost all unsafe abortions were in developing countries, where family planning and contraceptive programs have mostly leveled off.

Abortion rates were lowest in Western Europe — 12 per 1,000 — and highest in Eastern Europe — 43 per 1,000. The rate in North America was 19 per 1,000. Sedgh said she and colleagues found a link between higher abortion rates and regions with more restrictive legislation, such as in Latin America and Africa. They also found that 95 to 97 percent of abortions in those regions were unsafe.

Nope, no more coathangers and back alley abortions in America ever again…

“Where you’re wrong is in attributing full human status to an embryo.”

Well, I am not God so I am loathe to arrogantly say where life begins (if not at conception). Hence, I think it best to assume it begins at conception. If I did not believe in God, we would not be having this discussion. I would be fine with any and all abortions, with infanticide, euthanasia and other legalized ways of ending life (even Death Race 2000s and gladiator games). I mean, in the end, what does it really matter? An asteroid may hit our planet in the next decade and destroy most life. Or global warming (if it is man-made) might. Or a nuclear WWIII. We all become senseless matter in a godless universe.

Jam: I never cared that much for Neil Youngs voice. But despite that two of my favorite songsof all time are his and I like him singing them. They just fit his style so well (well duh, right?). Here is the first one. I think given my cynicism that the lyrics:

“Doesn’t mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I’ve been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I’m all alone at last”

struck a chord in me at an early age. I’ve always had a dark side a mile wide:

As I’ve said repeatedly here, I have no friends on either “side” in the abortion “debate.” The comment was that killing is illegal. And it manifestedly is not as the military and capital punishment attest. Just being EOI. :-)

Sorry, but the killing of other human beings IS MY BUSINESS as a member of society. And if I can help it, I will help decide if YOU have the legal right to take another life. It was legal to whip, brand and even kill black human beings in this country at one time.

So, now you want to control the lives and bodies of women instead of Blacks. Ok, but there’s this whole thing called “freedom” that kinda gets in the way of that.

Isn’t Maria Cheng a Salon writer? And isn’t the “study” she cites one produced by Guttmacher Institute, which seeks “to advance reproductive health including abortion rights”? Come one…I grow weary of partisan groups trying to buttress their positions with pseudo-scientific “studies”.

Josef – I’ve never been able to explain why I find his voice so compelling. Here’s another piece I’ve always found compelling. It used to be in an ad for some airline and I’d ALWAYS have to stop what I was doing to listen! It’s from Yanni at the Acropolis and I don’t know who the singers are, but they are AMAZING.

. . . or you could even expose yourself to any number of environmental influences

Well, I hope you know you can get arrested for that. Just ask my buddy Joe Bill. He was on the way home and needed to take a leak real bad and he was so far from any bathroom he decided to pull over on the highway and . . . well, expose hisself to environmental influences. Anyhow, along come a cop and Joe Bill was in the county jail in Cumming for exposing hisself. And they never even said anything about environmental influences.

How did the native americans address the situation of the unwanted pregnancy?

Okay, that was a bit of a rhetorical query. The endless droning about prove this and prove that does, in fact, tend to prove one thing. The matter of life and when it begins is an “affair of the conscience” and as James Madison was known to say that laws should not invade such affairs of the conscience.
So, believe upon your faith, and practice it. But allow others to believe upon theirs and leave them alone to do so.
