“A range of mainstream American publications printed paid propaganda for the government of Malaysia, much of it focused on the campaign against a pro-democracy figure there.
The payments to conservative American opinion writers — whose work appeared in outlets from the Huffington Post and San Francisco Examiner to the Washington Times to National Review and RedState — emerged in a filing this week to the Department of Justice. The filing under the Foreign Agent Registration Act outlines a campaign spanning May 2008 to April 2011 and led by Joshua Trevino, a conservative pundit, who received $389,724.70 under the contract and paid smaller sums to a series of conservative writers….
Trevino’s subcontractors included conservative writer Ben Domenech, who made $36,000 from the arrangement, and Rachel Ehrenfeld, the director of the American Center for Democracy, who made $30,000. Seth Mandel, an editor at Commentary, made $5,500. Brad Jackson, writing at the time for RedState, made $24,700. Overall, 10 writers were part of the arrangement.”
You take secret, undisclosed money from a foreign government to write hit pieces in U.S. media against a man, in this case Anwar Ibrahim, who is struggling to bring democracy to his country and was beaten and imprisoned for years for daring to challenge the dictatorial government? (Russia has apparently run similar pay-to-say operations.)
Much of Trevino’s work under the Malaysian contract has been removed by the outlets that published it. But you can get a taste of its amoral quality from this piece that was published as a rebuttal to a Trevino column.
And here’s a Rachel Ehrenfeld piece, condemning Ibrahim for “careless sexual behavior” among other things.
We already know of course that “you can’t believe everything that’s on the Internet.” But paid agents of foreign governments masquerading as American journalists takes things to a dangerous level and says a lot about the character of those involved.
UPDATE: Among those named as receiving money from Malaysia in Trevino’s belated filing as a foreign agent is Christopher Badeaux. Here’s a small sampling of his Malaysia-related work at RedState.com:
“Najib Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, has been on a more or less singular crusade to convince the Muslim world — and the West — that there is a path for moderate Islam in the world, that Islam does not equal terror, and that the taking of a life is contrary to Islam and civilization. His speech at Oxford was of a piece with that….
The salient point here is not whether we agree with the prime minister’s theological assertions, but rather we can appreciate the extraordinary effort he is making here, and the importance for the United States of his efforts.”
And:
In Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of Malaysia’s opposition, has apparently been caught in adultery, with video evidence that Dartmouth scientists say nearly certainly implicates him. The major dailies are calling on him to resign. For three years, after failing to topple the governing party in the 2008 elections, he has crisscrossed the planet telling anyone and everyone who would listen how corrupt and evil the governing party is. And yet despite all of this — despite his stated certainty that his opposition coalition of socialists, Islamists, and yuppie liberals is the only chance his country has to avoid certain doom at the hands of the centrist coalition that has been re-elected time and again in Malaysia, he has refused to resign.”

Jay: “If anybody would care to dispute the fact that these are conservative writers, please, make your case while I get another cup of coffee”
C’mon, Jay, this is not a question of “conservative” vs “liberal” in the narrow sense. Propaganda of this sort has deep roots in the Cold War era. Just recall the sordid history of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, the infamous CIA front organization that throughout the Cold War had writers and hacks on its payrolls spanning the liberal-conservative spectrum and was certainly not above character assassination or smear tactics when a target was felt to be too “radical” from the standpoint of US imperialistic interests. These tactics have continued in various quarters in the post-CW years and good aspiring hacks like Trevino know where to get their bread placed so it can be buttered.

If anyone is interested, George Will released an interesting piece today suggesting “progressives”are really stuck in the past as it were..
Gotta admit its another in a series of interesting positions…not without some merit of truth..
Progressives are remarkably uninterested in progress. Social Security is 78 years old, and myriad social improvements have added 17 years to life expectancy since 1935, yet progressives insist the program remain frozen, like a fly in amber. Medicare is 48 years old, and the competence and role of medicine have been transformed since 1965, yet progressives cling to Medicare “as we know it.” And they say that the Voting Rights Act, another 48-year-old, must remain unchanged, despite dramatic improvements in race relations.

How much do those people on those BOD’s of Soros foundation receive in “Grants” for research purposes?
Look I know you love to post buffoonish arguments. You have evidence of “those people” having grants and writing articles for which they “received” a grant and it was not disclosed? Only an idiot would try to claim that every person who receives a grant is going to slant the outcome. But I know its a typical conned mind melt.

If it’s the voting column, I’ve already read it. Funny thing is, Will accuses “progressives” of something that is an inherent characteristic of a true “conservative”. Both are stuck in the past, but the one’s opining for things to be like the Founding Fathers intended word-for-word are much farther behind than those “progressives”. Just sayin…

So if you would please you would be better served and so would your limited number of readers if topics of discussion can be kept to the more important issues that we are MORE CONCERNED about. Like the New Stadium proposal, Healthcare coverage fo the uninsured, The local school systems and their problems. These issues are better left to the real PROFESSIONALS like those of the NEW YORK TIMES, who have the investigative skills and budets to delve deep into such complicated issues. The managment of the AJC will barely give you gas money to go across town to investigate why a MOSQUITO’s raincoat was stolen, during a Carjacking from a One LEgged COCKROACH!

FOX eats off that plate too. They hire legitimate journalist away from legitimate outlets and have them writing with just their right hands for great sums of money and they thought that was all that was needed to equal the reporting against their antiquated movements. The dream in the early years was to buy CBS and turn that into a FOX network but CBS was not the whore they thought they were. So they formed the network and found the reporters who were watching journalism turn into an entertainment industry and wanted some of that action over the dead end street of network journalism that had one anchor and the rest journalist without portfolio. It is like a great “has been” athlete playing his last days for money on a cellar dwelling team to get people to buy tickets.
What has really surprise me, but not Obama, is this money tainted reporting has not stopped the stream of honest consciences that exist in journalism. And Obama has outflanked the right which has never understood the digital age, in getting his message to the people. I just really wish O would govern the way he runs a campaign, he doesn’t try as hard to get his message out in peace time.

Poor td, the man who wrote – and insanely and humiliatingly made a very public bet on – Romney was NOT going to get annihilated and who also wrote that the US Civil War was not primarily based on slavery.
A very, very tenuous grasp on reality, to say the least.
During this period, Republicans and conservatives had the advantage on every show (This Week, Face the Nation, Meet the Press, Fox News Sunday) in every category measured. All four shows interviewed more Republicans and conservatives than Democrats and progressives, interviewed more Republican elected and administration officials than Democratic officials, hosted more conservative journalists than progressive journalists, held more panels that tilted right than tilted left, and gave more solo interviews to Republicans and conservatives.
But for the empirically-challenged td and his fellow sheep, it might just as well all be written in Greek….

If Bookman is trying to use this as some lame excuse that conservative writers are biased and do it for money, this is one small instance of someone doing exactly that. They are biased. So is most of the main stream media. Their bias shows every day of every week. Look what happened to Woodward when he strayed just a little bit out of the box. An avalanche of criticism including some liberal turd that says he can’t wait for Woodward to die so the truth will out. From being a liberal icon to a hack in one single day. It’s the liberal way. Don’t get in the way. Don’t voice an opinion different from ours. Don’t go against what we believe in. If you do, we will make it our express purpose in life to destroy you. Any way we can. Whether or not you are right or wrong, we really don’t care. Just don’t disagree with us. Do so at your own peril.

If you watched that video and did not see that it was making fun of the Democrats policies and not Michelle then you my friend are the one that is a little lacking in the intelligence department.
On;ly to the simple minded did it do that. To the rest of us it was just plain out stupid.
I thought you would change you tune about the video being a hack job on Michelle to just not liking it when I called your intelligence into question. If you do not like it fine (personal opinion) but to attempt to make it something that it is not then that shows intellectual dishonesty.

Look: I had forgotten about that one.It has to be the funniest Presidential impression act ever. Side by side.
Unlike the far lefties here I don’t think Bush was “the worst President ever” or that 100 years from now he will be viewed as such. I didn’t care for him much nor do i think he was as effective as some other presidents, but the worst EVER? Naw. He deserves points just for the material he gave comedians lol if nothing else. PLUS as he showed in the video, the fact he could laugh at himself.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
(He is the liberals, progressives, moderates and independent secret weapon.)
Many party members have aligned themselves with Limbaugh and his huge audience. There have been more than a few Republicans who have backed off of positions, primarily because Limbaugh was opposed. The conservative movement, and the Republican Party, has played up Limbaugh’s stardom. In some ways, they’ve allowed Limbaugh to become a spokesman for all things conservative and most things Republican.
That sort of strategy doesn’t work.
Do tell…

“but the worst EVER?”
and it’s NEVER possible to say that and be correct, because we don’t know what future Presidents will be like. The most we can ever say is “worst to date” – but it’s even difficult to be accurate about that because we weren’t alive through all the past Presidencies.

The album is one of Rundgren’s most unusual in that every sound is the product of the artist’s voice. Rundgren employed overdubbing techniques and an E-mu Emulator (an early sampler), electronically manipulating the sound of his voice in order to mimic conventional rock instruments, hand claps, and other sounds.

Rush is a shill for the Conservative movement. If politicians get off the reservation and want to give into progressive thought then Rush calls them out and they change their tune because politicians first and foremost want to be re elected and second they do not want a conservative primary challenge. I do not see how you can think this is being a shill for the party.
