“A range of mainstream American publications printed paid propaganda for the government of Malaysia, much of it focused on the campaign against a pro-democracy figure there.
The payments to conservative American opinion writers — whose work appeared in outlets from the Huffington Post and San Francisco Examiner to the Washington Times to National Review and RedState — emerged in a filing this week to the Department of Justice. The filing under the Foreign Agent Registration Act outlines a campaign spanning May 2008 to April 2011 and led by Joshua Trevino, a conservative pundit, who received $389,724.70 under the contract and paid smaller sums to a series of conservative writers….
Trevino’s subcontractors included conservative writer Ben Domenech, who made $36,000 from the arrangement, and Rachel Ehrenfeld, the director of the American Center for Democracy, who made $30,000. Seth Mandel, an editor at Commentary, made $5,500. Brad Jackson, writing at the time for RedState, made $24,700. Overall, 10 writers were part of the arrangement.”
You take secret, undisclosed money from a foreign government to write hit pieces in U.S. media against a man, in this case Anwar Ibrahim, who is struggling to bring democracy to his country and was beaten and imprisoned for years for daring to challenge the dictatorial government? (Russia has apparently run similar pay-to-say operations.)
Much of Trevino’s work under the Malaysian contract has been removed by the outlets that published it. But you can get a taste of its amoral quality from this piece that was published as a rebuttal to a Trevino column.
And here’s a Rachel Ehrenfeld piece, condemning Ibrahim for “careless sexual behavior” among other things.
We already know of course that “you can’t believe everything that’s on the Internet.” But paid agents of foreign governments masquerading as American journalists takes things to a dangerous level and says a lot about the character of those involved.
UPDATE: Among those named as receiving money from Malaysia in Trevino’s belated filing as a foreign agent is Christopher Badeaux. Here’s a small sampling of his Malaysia-related work at RedState.com:
“Najib Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, has been on a more or less singular crusade to convince the Muslim world — and the West — that there is a path for moderate Islam in the world, that Islam does not equal terror, and that the taking of a life is contrary to Islam and civilization. His speech at Oxford was of a piece with that….
The salient point here is not whether we agree with the prime minister’s theological assertions, but rather we can appreciate the extraordinary effort he is making here, and the importance for the United States of his efforts.”
And:
In Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of Malaysia’s opposition, has apparently been caught in adultery, with video evidence that Dartmouth scientists say nearly certainly implicates him. The major dailies are calling on him to resign. For three years, after failing to topple the governing party in the 2008 elections, he has crisscrossed the planet telling anyone and everyone who would listen how corrupt and evil the governing party is. And yet despite all of this — despite his stated certainty that his opposition coalition of socialists, Islamists, and yuppie liberals is the only chance his country has to avoid certain doom at the hands of the centrist coalition that has been re-elected time and again in Malaysia, he has refused to resign.”

Let me try to explain it this way.
Many times in my federal career (especially toward the end of the fiscal year) we would run out of money in certain areas including payment for overtime work.
We still had a mission to perform ………. and the overtime hours still had to be worked …….. so did we just not work? No ……… we completed each and every protective mission anyway ………. without pay. That’s just the way it was and guess what ? We didn’t picket on a union line somewhere complaining.
In the same way the V.A. can run out of money. It’s just my small attempt to help out when I can do without.
Believe it or not, like it or not, appreciate it or not ………. I don’t care.

And I can relate to what scout wrote about not using VA benefits.
For over thirty years the VA was not even on my radar.
I had always heard that the VA was horribly run and I wasn’t even sure I was eligible for care with them. (I’ve never posited that I was the smartest guy here! LOL!) And to Scout’s point, I always viewed it as the place for the guys who were getting shot up to get care.
So for all of those decades I dutifully and stupidly gave lots of money to the giant HMO bloodsuckers. And as I was healthy as a horse, I never really used them, to speak of.
Then things changed; even with a $10K deductible my health insurance premiums were a lot. Also, I got terribly sick with blood clots.
So a fellow vet buddy of mine basically dragged me down there to get into the system.
It was then that I learned that they had completely turned that fiasco around. And now, much more often than not, and certainly in my extensive experience, they ROCK!
Uncle Sam is the best, in my book…

It sounds like your system’s gifted and talented program. These are state programs, it’s just that each system gives its own name. Ours is called the Challenge Program. The pull out model is, just my opinion, the best in that it doesn’t “golden ghettoize” the child. Again, a lot depends on the local school environment. In some the attitude is elitist, in others far from it. The teachers are endorsed by the taking of certain courses oriented toward teaching the gifted and not chosen under any other criteria not put on the regular classroom teacher. The curricula and methods operate under a cooperative effort between the classroom teachers and the gifted teacher. The aim is to take the child who has mastered the basic objectives to a more sophisticated application of those same objectives. It provides them with hands-on and laboratory time while the mainstream teacher focuses on the more basic objective mastery.
Our own L’il Girlchild was placed in kinder and went through the program into its objective outcome of early entry in AP coursework in high school. It buttressed our own home expectations and goals and in the school environments where she was, the elitism was there, I won’t deny that, but at the same time it was our duty to teach her as a home value that this carried with it a series of obligations. The boys were not enrolled in such programs, though the older boy was in the similar program for the arts. We worried more about elitism with him and that than we did with her!
Overall, it is a positive thing. I would recommend she enroll. But just make sure you keep a close eye on how she feels about it and that she not see it as class but academic based, the reward for doing well.

From what I can tell, the Bible is a mash up. And maybe even a cover tune.
Several other great civilizations/religions that preceded it had VERY similar stories. …the creation, the flood, the tower of Babel, the trials of Abraham, even the miracles of Moses are Jewish adaptations of older Pagan myths. Biblical scholars date the earliest of the Old Testament writing around 960 B.C.E. All of the Pagan myths quoted are much, much older.
it served it’s purpose in it’s time, but I think that as man evolves, it will diminish…

You can’t change human nature and celibacy failed. There IS no SOLUTION. Just as with the Newtown horror, it’s happened before…it will happen again. To me the abuse of the children, horrible as it was, paled in comparison to the cover up.
If I had the power to do it, the first thing I would do is dismantle the entire power structure of the Catholic church and give the power back to the congregations. What I find particular despicable was the pass that was given to the men who shifted those abusive priests around because “the churcjh” was VASTLY more important to them then mere children.
I have NO doubt the Jesus would be appalled at what was done in his name.

Why do you ask?
I was brought up and taught by my family that if we wanted someone to respect our beliefs, then we had to respect theirs. Granddaddy made sure that we went to every type of congregation to learn what they taught and believed. Granny’s corollary whenever we might question their adherence to their specific dogma and doctrines in daily life was, “they’re as good as they know how to be.”
Do I “wannabe” a Christian? There are many things in the teachings of the Christ and in the doctrines and practices of those who call him L-rd that I respect, admire and try to emulate in my own life. It is not my own tradition. There is much I do not agree with in both traditions.

I disagree. I do not find it at all difficult to practice. But, having said that, I reject quite a few of the social “sins” that too many people find it hard to follow. Jesus spoke to a people, and at a time, when the vast majority of his audience was illiterate. I see pretty easy and simple rules that he left. It’s when the educated town people got hold of his words and wrote them down, filtered through their own existing beliefs and prejudices that we see difficulty entering the religion.
But the faith? It’s not hard at all to follow.

I have not read one thing on this blog posted by a Muslim, radical or not.
barking frog, well not for quite sometime but actually there have been. I’m referring to radical Islam beyond this blog and it seemed that you were referring to Christians generally. Christians and Jews don’t force people to follow their beliefs through threats of decapitation or other forms of murder. Hopefully, you’re well aware of that fact.

I have, and while commenting on many other issues not related to religion, their comments on Islam and its various schools of interpretation have been respectful, moderate and informative.

You didn’t offend me but you did offend conservatism. Challenge ideology as I and others do, but attacking someone by wishing them ill will doesn’t do justice to our cause.

I’m referring only to this blog since Fred™ original post concerning
his outrage at my comment concerning your tv show. He seems to think
an accurate portrayal of the Bible can be without God.

christian conservative, what happened to you? Seriously.
We all know that you had self-control issues and after repeated warnings that you were sent to the blogging Land of Nod, to the East of Eden, but this???
This pathetic state?
I really do wonder what your mother, father and other family members would think of you if they read this venom you spew here.
Get help.
If this blog has caused you to humiliate yourself like this, you need it…
